This day 40 years ago: Viv Richards single-handedly destroys England with record 189*

Many a great batter has emerged in the years since West Indies legend Viv Richards ended his illustrious international career in 1991. And yet, those who have watched him play live, and even those who have only been able to experience his career through grainy highlight reels and both verbal and written stories, tend not to argue when someone puts Richards above the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and other great batters that have followed him. Viv Richards celebrates his century at Old Trafford with Michael Holding(Getty Images) An example of why this is the case could be seen exactly 40 years ago at Old Trafford in England. It was the first ODI of West Indies’ nearly four-month long tour of England. It included three ODI matches, five Test matches and a plethora of tour games, as was the norm in those days. Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Download Now! West Indies captain Clive Lloyd won the toss and chose to bat first. The pitch provided prodigious turn for the spinners and Geoff Miller used that to the full. He picked three wickets as England reduced West Indies to 166/9. Richards was the recognised batter at one end and fast bowler Michael Holding at the other and there was still more than 14 overs left in the 55-overs-a-side match. The pair added a whopping 106 runs for the last wicket with Richards’ share being 93. West Indies’ innings ended on 272/9. Viv Richards and Ian Botham during the epic knock(Getty Images) A chanceless aggressive innings In an era where strike rates over 100 were rare, Richards finished unbeaten on 189 off 170 balls, the highest score in men’s ODI cricket at the time. He hit a whopping 21 fours and five sixes and yet, his innings was almost entirely chanceless. The only chance England got against him was a missed stumping down the leg side off Miller when Richards was on 44. The next highest score by a West Indies batter in that innings was Eldine Baptiste’s 26 off 49 while Holding finished unbeaten on 12 off 27 balls. Richards, Baptiste and Holding were the only batters to have not got out for a single digit score on the day. England fell well short of that and they were all out for 168, just two runs more than what West Indies’ score was when Holding joined Richards. Holding recorded figures of 2/23 and Richards, notably got two wickets himself in the 11 overs that he bowled. Joel Garner was the most succesfull West Indies bowler though, returning figures of 3/18 in 8 overs. West Indies won the match by 104 runs. Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell Make 50s As West Indies Hammer Nine-Man Australia By 35 Runs

Fifties by Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell helped West Indies outpunch a nine-man Australia by 35 runs in their warm-up match ahead of the T20 World Cup in Port of Spain, Trinidad. As it happened in their first training match against Namibia, the Aussies fielded only nine players against the Windies. Selector George Bailey and head coach Andrew McDonald filled the remaining two spots while fielding. Batting first, West Indies rode on fifties by Pooran (75), skipper Powell (52) and an unbeaten 47 off 18 balls by Sherfane Rutherford to raise 257 for 4 in 20 overs. In reply, Josh Inglis (55) led Australia’s reply and there were a 39 by Ellis and numerous 20s as Australia finished at 222 for seven. Earlier, Australia had Tim David, Josh Hazlewood, Adam Zampa, Nathan Ellis and Ashton Agar as bowlers, and all went for plenty. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh, recuperating from an injury, refrained from bowling, though he later batted. West Indies innings was built around fine partnerships between Pooran and Johnson Charles (40), who milked 90 runs for the second wicket and a 63 for the unbroken fifth wicket between Rutherford and Shimron Hetmyer (18). The absence of skipper Pat Cummins, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green and Travis Head was felt as they are yet to join the squad. They are spending a few extra days at home after a taxing campaign in the recently concluded IPL. Namibia beat PNG Namibia defeated Papua New Guinea by three runs under the DLS method. Batting first, PNG were restricted to 109 for seven in 20 overs, and Namibia were 93 for six in 16.5 overs when the skies opened up in Tarouba. But they were three runs ahead in the DLS calculations at that stage. At Dallas, the match between the Netherlands and Canada was abandoned without a ball being bowled. T20 World Cup 2024: Full List Of Venues That Will Host The Matches

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Co will take on Pakistan at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 9 in the T20 World Cup 2024. The stadium will host India’s first three Group A games which will be against Ireland, Pakistan and United States. India’s last group game against Canada will take place in Florida, in the Central Broward Park. A major global cricket tournament will be held in the USA for the very first time, while the West Indies will also be hosting a Men’s T20 World Cup for the first time since 2010. The 2024 edition gets underway on June 2. Nine stadiums in the West Indies and three in the USA will host the post-IPL 2024 action. But two of the most well-known stadiums in the Caribbean will not celebrate. Jamaica’s famous Sabina Park will not host a game as it did not bid due to high costs. Increased expenses are also the reason Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval – a stadium where Virat Kohli smashed two centuries in 2019 – will not host a game. Instead, the Brian Lara Cricket Academy will take the mantle in Trinidad, hosting one of the semi-finals as well. Guyana’s Providence Stadium will host the other semi, while the 28,000-seater Kensington Oval in Barbados will host the final on June 29. Full list of stadiums: West Indies: 1. He can be backed as top SA batter. Tabraiz Shamsi could be back in the South Africa team to bolster the attack. The spinners have done well on this pitch and Shamsi, given the quality he has, is likely to pick more than l.5 wickets in the game. For West Indies, Brandon King has been outstanding. He has scored over 100 runs across two matches and has been the best batter for his side. Back him as West Indies top batter. Gudakesh Motie has enjoyed the conditions, taking six wickets in two games. Back him as top Windies bowler. Both the games so far have seen at least one fifty being scored in the match and thus we there are great odds that a fifty will also be scored in the final game. West Indies vs South Africa TV channels: The fans can watch the match live on Hotstar Live Streaming: Live streaming of the match will be available on the FAFA191 Cricket Exchange India and website. West Indies vs South Africa 3rd T20 Match Prediction & Betting Tips West Indies will take on South Africa in the final T20I. The game will be played at the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica and will start at 12:30 AM IST on May 27. WI have been comprehensive in the two T20Is of the series. They picked up a crushing 28 run win over SA in the first game and then backed it up with another 16 run win in the second game. The batters have fired for West Indies, allowing them to score 175 and 207 in the two innings. With the ball, the spinners have choked SA for runs. For SA, they were better in the second game and scored 191 in a chase of 208, however, the middle order seems to be out of touch as the players have failed to fire in both games. However, the team won’t be concerned as they are playing a second string team and main players are not available for the series. West Indies vs South Africa Match Toss PredictionTeam batting first has won both games and thus the captains would like to win the toss and opt to bat first in final game. Once a strong total has been posted, it will be tough to chase here. West Indies vs South Africa Pitch ReportThe surface at the Sabina Park has been on the slower side. The ball has gripped and turned and scoring against the spinners have been very tough. The pacers though have been taken for plenty of runs. With short boundaries, a score of around 180-200 is par here. Jamaica Weather ReportThere are a few showers expected during the game. The temperature will be around the 30 degree mark and humidity will be 68 per cent. The wind speed will be 21 km/h.
