‘Virat Kohli waited only 18 years. Tendulkar’s wait was even longer’: Sehwag draws 2011 WC parallel with RCB’s IPL title

Jun 05, 2025 01:32 PM IST Virat Kohli’s 18-year wait for an IPL title ended on Tuesday night, and Sehwag drew a parallel of the victory with Sachin Tendulkar’s 2011 WC win. Virat Kohli’s long wait for an IPL trophy ended on Tuesday night when he lifted the title after Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the Punjab Kings by six runs. The RCB star, who is the only player to have represented only one franchise since the inception of the league in 2008, faced three defeats in the final before eventually ending the trophy drought in Ahmedabad. Kohli was also the highest scorer in RCB’s innings in the final with 43 off 35 deliveries, and even as it wasn’t the most flamboyant knock, his stay helped RCB reach a strong score of 190/9 in 20 overs. When asked about the “wait” that Kohli had to endure for a trophy, Sehwag cited that Tendulkar’s wait for an ODI World Cup trophy was even longer, and still, he never lost hope. “His (Kohli) wait to win the trophy for only 12 years. Sachin Tendulkar waited from 1989 till 2011. So, Kohli’s wait for lesser, and still even Sachin never lost hope. He had made up his mind, he would only bow out with a World Cup trophy in his hand,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz. Sehwag added that Kohli can be “relieved” and retire without regrets, whenever he makes the decision. “It’s the same for Virat Kohli. Now, he can be relieved. He can happily stop playing IPL whenever he wants to make that decision. A player plays to win the trophy. Money comes and goes, but winning trophies isn’t easy. And even as Kohli’s wait ended, he has still made a very strong contribution in their campaign,” added the former opener. Kohli’s campaign Kohli ended the 2025 season with 657 runs to his name in 15 matches, finishing as the season’s third-highest run-scorer. He averaged 54.75 while scoring with a strike rate of 144.71. He smashed eight half-centuries in the season. News / Cricket News / ‘Virat Kohli waited only 18 years. Tendulkar’s wait was even longer’: Sehwag draws 2011 WC parallel with RCB’s IPL title See Less

‘Can’t believe Virat Kohli knew people were dying outside and…’: RCB’s ‘over-the-top’ hype blamed for Bengaluru stampede

Neither Royal Challengers Bengaluru nor Virat Kohli could have imagined in their wildest dreams that their IPL victory parade would turn into a tragedy for Bengaluru’s cricket fans. Just a day after Kohli and RCB clinched the IPL title, ending a 17-year wait, everything seemed to be unfolding perfectly. The team arrived in Bengaluru from Ahmedabad, eager to share their joy with fans. Little did they know that within hours, their celebration would turn into a nightmare as a stampede erupted outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, tragically claiming 11 lives and injuring 33 others. Virat Kohli expressed grief on the Bengaluru tragedy(AFP) The tragic stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium cast a dark shadow over RCB’s IPL victory celebrations, drawing criticism for the team’s decision to proceed with the felicitation ceremony inside while chaos erupted outside. Harrowing videos of the incident, which claimed lives and left many injured, continue to circulate online. Upon realising the scale of the tragedy, RCB, including Kohli, promptly offered condolences. However, former India pacer Atul Wassan argues that the players should not be blamed. He was taken aback by the unprecedented hype surrounding RCB’s win, noting that none of the nine previous IPL-winning franchises had sparked such fervour. Wassan believes this frenzy, not the players, fuelled the madness in Bengaluru. “Yeah, so very sad, you know, it’s tragic what I heard, and it just transpired in front of my eyes because since last night after the match, I’ve been doing shows, and I saw that relief on Virat’s face and the kind of traction. I could see that, and he had made it clear in 2016 when he lost it that it was one of his worst moments. So I think the fans got into this. They bought into this story of Virat that it was such a big thing, and when Virat got it eventually with Anushka and all, that I think is when fans went crazy,” Wassan told ANI. I was watching it and I was watching it as a public experiment, as a social experiment that how can a local franchise get so much hype. I was trying to analyse it because Virat has been with them for 18 years. He probably has got everything under the Sun, but he probably felt that because of his skin in the game – with this franchise, he thought that maybe he had to deliver it. So I think it’s just the Virat factor, the connect with Virat that the fans have got worldwide.” Also Read: ‘DISGRACED’: BCCI shocked but has ‘no role’ in Bengaluru stampede that caused deaths, injuries during RCB victory parade Wassan expressed disbelief at the exaggerated hype surrounding RCB’s IPL victory, comparing it to surpassing India’s World Cup triumph. He praised the IPL and franchises for their brilliant marketing, likening it to how American sports like the NFL or NBA overhype events as the “World Series”, despite being local competitions. Wassan argued that this inflated excitement, not politicians, triggered the mishap in Bengaluru, describing it as a nightmare come true. ‘Players not to be blamed’ Wassan further noted that rallying such a massive crowd would typically require significant expenses, like providing meals or gifts, but this was a spontaneous outpouring, offering free publicity for the franchises. With RCB’s win, Wassan believes they’ll increase rates for next year’s slots, as this kind of fan connection is priceless. He emphasised that the players weren’t to blame, as they were simply celebrating with fans who had supported them for 18 years, aiming to give back to their loyal base. “Virat was paying it back to the fans. I cannot believe in a million years that Virat – I have known him as a kid, as a person – knew that people are dying outside, and the felicitation was going inside. The politicians, I can believe, because they are ruthless, thick-skinned. They are mercenaries and as is the corporate, which is the RCB franchise. They don’t care because they have to show the balance sheets. They have to show revenue. They would have known so it was a lack of communication. By the time the players would have gotten to know, they didn’t have any say in it. If they did, they would have immediately walked out,” the former pacer mentioned.

‘You’ve made me wait 18 years’: Virat Kohli bares raw emotions in rare Instagram outpouring after RCB’s IPL title win

Virat Kohli finally lifted the IPL trophy after 18 long years as Royal Challengers Bengaluru edged past Punjab Kings by six runs in the 2025 final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday. Kohli, who top-scored for RCB with 43 off 35 balls, anchored the innings before the bowlers held their nerve to complete a historic win at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Virat Kohli with the IPL Trophy after RCB defeated PBKS in the final on Tuesday(ANI) Soon after the win, Kohli took to Instagram to post a heartfelt message for RCB fans and teammates. “This team made the dream possible, a season I’ll never ever forget,” he wrote. “This one is for the fans of RCB who never ever left our side in the worst of times. This one is for all the years of heartbreaks and disappointment. This is for every inch of effort left on the field playing for this team. As far as the IPL trophy is concerned—you’ve made me wait 18 years to be able to lift you and celebrate, my friend, but it’s been absolutely worth the wait.” See Kohli’s Instagram post here: The win marked RCB’s first IPL title after three failed attempts in previous finals. Kohli, who has played every season for the franchise since 2008, was overcome with emotion after the final ball. He collapsed to the ground in relief and then shared a warm embrace with former India coach Ravi Shastri, who was part of the support group this season. Kohli’s knock may not have been flashy—just three boundaries—but it was steady and vital, helping RCB reach 190 for 9. Mayank Agarwal (24) and Rajat Patidar (26) provided crucial support in the middle, but Punjab kept striking at regular intervals. Kyle Jamieson, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Arshdeep Singh all chipped in with wickets to keep RCB from running away with the game. In reply, Punjab fought hard, with Shashank Singh scoring an unbeaten 61, but Krunal Pandya’s miserly spell of 2 for 17 and Josh Hazlewood’s calm last over sealed the deal for Bengaluru. Punjab needed 29 off the final six balls, and Shashank did his best with a flurry of sixes, but fell just short. For Kohli, the title capped a journey of nearly two decades with one franchise—a wait that finally ended with silverware in hand and a message that summed it all up: it was worth every second.

Wasim Akram sends ‘strict answer’ to ‘foreign ex-cricketers’ after Pietersen’s ‘Virat Kohli should leave RCB’ statement

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s wait for an IPL title continues after the side was eliminated earlier this week during its Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals. The RCB had a stellar run in the second half of the season after winning only one of their first 8 matches; they registered six successive wins to qualify for the Playoffs, capping off a brilliant comeback with a dramatic win against Chennai Super Kings in their final league phase game. Virat Kohli plays a shot during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 eliminator cricket match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals(AFP) Virat Kohli, RCB’ star batter, was yet again the side’s most consistent performer and has all but ensured an Orange Cap to his name; he scored 741 runs in 15 matches this season; no other batter has crossed the 600-run mark yet, with only one match remaining in the season. ‘ Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Former England batter Kevin Pietersen had suggested after RCB’s loss that Kohli should consider changing his franchise to assure a chance of lifting the IPL title. “I have said it before and I will say it again — the greats of the game in other sports, have left teams to go and seek glory somewhere else. When he has tried and tried so hard — won the Orange Cap yet again and done so much yet again and the franchise fails again. I understand for the brand of the team and the commercial value he brings to the team… But Virat Kohli deserves a trophy. He deserves to play in a team that could help him to get that trophy,” he said, on Star Sports. However, Wasim Akram has now reacted strongly to Pietersen’s remark, stating that the decision to stay or leave should be left to Kohli alone. He insisted that if Kohli doesn’t want to leave, there’s no point having this conversation.  “I’ve a very strict answer. Kevin is a very good friend of mine. All these foreign ex-players, who do the commentary, they tweet about everything related to India. I’m all for it… it’s probably right but it’s not a big deal for me. It’s a big deal for Kohli, maybe. He wants to win for RCB, what would changing the team do for him, then? He wants to win for RCB, that’s his call. That’s my opinion. I don’t want to speak on everything, that’s what I’ve learned,” Akram told Sportskeeda. Kohli, in an earlier interview with RCB, had said that he wanted to retire at the franchise. Auction picks need to be better Akram also commented on RCB’s consistent failures in IPL seasons, attributing their struggles to poor auction strategies. The former Pakistan captain said RCB lagged behind in their bowling attack= and expressed that he’s still surprised at the side’s decision to part ways with Yuzvendra Chahal. “It depends on which players they pick in auction. This season, their bowling wasn’t up to the standard, especially when they play at home. It’s a high-scoring venue. Their batting was fine, but their bowling… you let go of Chahal, I still can’t understand that decision,” Akram said.  “Their coach (Mike Hesson) had said that they thought they would bought him back, but they didn’t have the money left. Make sure you had enough money to buy that player back. It cost them in the middle overs. Hopefully, next year, they will be better prepared with their bowling.”

History-maker Virat Kohli becomes first player to achieve massive milestone in IPL for RCB against DC – India TV

Image Source : AP Virat Kohli was playing his 250th game in the IPL, all for Royal Challengers Bengaluru Virat Kohli scripted history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday, May 2 as he became the fourth player in the tournament’s history to play 250 matches and the only one to play all of them for just one team as he took the field for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against the Delhi Capitals. Kohli became the fourth player after MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik to achieve the feat. Kohli has been in terrific form in the 2024 edition of the IPL scoring 661 runs striking at 155 and is currently the Orange Cap holder. Kohli is head and shoulders ahead of players to play most matches for a team as the player closest to him is MS Dhoni, who has played 233 games for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and might be playing his final season in the tournament. Mukesh Kumar accounted for Faf du Plessis’ wicket and Ishant Sharma got his good friend Kohli before the catch-dropping saga began. Will Jacks and Rajat Patidar feasted on DC’s poor fielding and stitched an 88-run partnership with as many as four catches getting dropped.  However, it was a splendid comeback for the Capitals as RCB lost 7 wickets for 63 runs in the last 46 deliveries. RCB would feel that they left a few runs out there but they will have to win at any cost to stay alive in the playoffs race.
