‘Only tired’: Suryakumar Yadav after denting Sunrisers Hyderabad’s play-off push | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: The iconic Wankhede Stadium was ablaze with Suryakumar Yadav‘s exceptional performance. Playing on his home turf, Suryakumar thrilled the crowd with a majestic innings, smashing an unbeaten 102 to propel Mumbai Indians to a dominant seven-wicket victory over Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad, dealing a blow to their playoff hopes.Mumbai Indians were chasing 174 for the win and stumbled to 31-3, but Suryakumar stitched an unbroken partnership of 143 with Tilak Varma, reaching the target with 16 balls to spare. After guiding the five-time champions to a convincing victory, Suryakumar, who sealed the win with a six that also completed his second IPL century in 51 balls, said he relished his time at the crease. His performance comes well for India ahead of the T20 World Cup in June in the West Indies and the United States.“I have done this after a long time. I fielded for 20 overs and batted for 18 overs, only tired (nothing else to worry about.) I feel it was the need of the hour for me,” Suryakumar said at the post-match presentation. “I went out to bat, needed someone to bat till the end. I just enjoyed my time. It’s from the Mumbai school of arts, have played a lot of cricket at Wankhede. When the ball stopped seaming, I played all my shots that I practice in the nets. I feel the intent would have been the same, I would have definitely played in the same pattern,” the dashing right-hander said. However, the win for five-time winners Mumbai Indians, placed ninth in the 10-team points table, could be late in a tournament fast moving towards its business end.

I wanted to just play the situation. I kept my intent, walking in and playing with a straight bat, but while keeping my scoring options open,” Tilak said after the match. ‘Suryakumar deserved the century’ Suryakumar, at the other end, brought up his fifty off 30 balls, after which he raced to his second IPL hundred off 51 balls. In the first ball of the 18th over, Tilak gave the strike back to Suryakumar, who smashed T Natarajan for a six to bring up his century. “Then you saw what happened – the Surya bhai show. At that moment, he was batting well. I thought he deserved 100 and gave him the strike. There was no talk about him limping or anything,” Tilak added. After beating the Orange Army, MI kept hanging by a thread as far as qualifying for the playoffs is concerned. They need to win their remaining 2 matches and hope for other results to go in their favour. The Mumbai-based team will be looking to continue their winning momentum when they next lock horns with Shreyas Iyer’s Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Matheesha Pathirana stars with ball to help CSK beat MI despite Rohit Sharma’s second IPL century – India TV

Image Source : BCCI/IPL Chennai Super Kings kept their calm with the ball in the end to defend a score at Wankhede Stadium against the Mumbai Indians Chennai Super Kings (CSK), irrespective of the venue, the conditions, the long batting line-up of the Mumbai Indians, pulled off what is rare at the Wankhede Stadium, defending a total, especially in the night games as the Men in Yellow won by 20 runs on Sunday, April 14. Former Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma smashed his second IPL century but no other batter supported him from the other end. Matheesha Pathirana was the difference between the two sides in the end as he took four wickets to break the back of the chase for the home team. At 130/2 in the 14th over, Mumbai Indians were on course to chase down 207 runs with two set batters in, however, the wicket of Tilak Varma proved to be the turning point as the strike dried up for Rohit and the incoming batters kept hitting out to the fielders on the boundary and eventually the Mumbai Indians fell short. Captain Hardik Pandya struggled to get going, Tim David hit a couple of big sixes but he too got out as the pressure kept mounting on Rohgit and the required run rate kept rising to 14, 15 and 17. Rohit did get a few boundaries at the end but it just wasn’t enough and the Mumbai Indians will be disappointed at how the chase panned out ultimately.  More to follow…
