He can kill spinners: Ravi Shastri backs ‘explosive’ Shivam Dube before T20 World Cup 2024

He can kill spinners: Ravi Shastri backs ‘explosive’ Shivam Dube before T20 World Cup 2024

Ravi Shastri picked Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube as the Indian cricketers to watch out for in the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and United States of America (USA). After performing exceptionally in the T20Is against Afghanistan, Dube showed his class for CSK in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Dube has earned praise for his ability to take apart quality spinners. Shastri also backed Jaiswal, lauding him for his wholehearted performance against England in the 5-match Test series. After a poor start to his campaign in the IPL, Jaiswal returned to form with a sparkling hundred against MI at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. “The two gentlemen you’ve got to watch out for, and both are left-handers, both playing their first World Cup. One is [Yashasvi] Jaiswal. We know a lot about him, he did extremely well against England, explosive at the top of the order, a left-hander, he’s young, he’s fearless, and he’ll play shots,” Shastri told ICC. Dube has been in prime form, having scored 350 runs from 11 games at an average of 43.75 and a strike-rate of 170.73. The fact that he has hit 26 sixes shows how dominating he has been. “But there’s someone in the middle order, please watch out for [him], because he is explosive, he’s devastating and he’s a match-winner. He hits sixes for fun, and when it comes to spin bowling, he can kill you,” Shastri said. ‘Shivam Dube holds the key’ While Dube has garnered accolades for playing spin-bowling effectively, the southpaw has also found a way to dictate terms to the fast bowlers. Shastri said that Dube can turn matches on their head with his power-hitting in the death overs. “Even against the fast bowlers, he’s worked out his game, he’s understood the way to play, and I think he holds the key at that number five, number six position, because if you’re on the doldrums, you want someone to change it in 20-25 balls, he’s the player to go to,” Shastri added. India's T20 World Cup jersey launched, fans come up with mixed reactions – India TV

India’s T20 World Cup jersey launched, fans come up with mixed reactions

Team India’s new jersey for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 has been launched. The launch took place in Dharamsala with captain Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja featuring in the video released. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last year signed Adidas as the kit sponsor of team India for five years and since then, the men in blue have been donning differently designed kits at the mega events. The new jersey specially designed for the T20 World Cup has tri-colour stripes on the V-shaped neck while the sleeves are of saffron colour that also have traditional Adidas stripes on it. The blue colour at the front has been retained as expected with ‘INDIA’ written at the centre. Notably, the name of the sponsor, in this case, ‘Dream11’ will be removed as per the rules that have been set by the ICC when it comes to the World Cups irrespective of the format. Meanwhile, the fans had got a glimpse of the jersey earlier itself with the jersey pictures getting leaked on social media. They had come up with mixed reactions with some calling the jersey ‘stylish’ while a few didn’t like it at all. Here are some of the reactions: As far as the T20 World Cup is concerned, team India will be starting their campaign on June 5 against Ireland in New York. Their marquee clash against Pakistan will be played on June 9 while their last two group games are scheduled on June 12 and 15 against USA and Canada respectively. India squad for T20 World Cup 2024: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Babar Azam backs Gary Kirsten to lead a positive change in Pakistan cricket

Babar Azam backs Gary Kirsten to lead a positive change in Pakistan cricket

Pakistan’s cricket team skipper Babar Azam addresses a press conference ahead of the T20 series against Ireland, England and the T20 World Cup, in Lahore, Pakistan, on May 6, 2024. | Photo Credit: AP Pakistan limited overs skipper Babar Azam is optimistic that Gary Kirsten’s appointment as head coach of Pakistan’s white ball side will certainly improve its performance. The South African was roped in as the team’s limited overs head coach last month on a two-year contract, and this would be his third outing as an international coach, having guided India (2008-11) and South Africa (2011-13). “He (Kirsten) is a very experienced coach, and his presence should be beneficial for us all. He is already taking a lot of interest in the planning for the World Cup and discussing strategy with the team management,” Babar told a media conference in Lahore on Monday. Babar said Kirsten was in touch with the side daily, receiving reports about what they were doing and how they were planning things. “He (Kirsten) shares his plans with us, discussions are happening with coaches about our planning, and we update him on net practice plans, like how the bowling practice went today,” he said. Babar said there was already steady line of communication between him and Kirsten and he is looking forward to his arrival. The Pakistan skipper also dismissed concerns over some selections as the squad leaves for Ireland. Pakistani selectors will finalise the final 15-member squad for the global tournament from the same 18 players based on the form and fitness of players in Ireland and England. Kirsten is expected to join the team in England. “There is no issue about the top order as to who will open from amongst me, Rizwan, Saim or Fakhar. All decisions will be based on keeping in mind the team’s interests. There is no confusion there,” Babar said. He clarified that young and new players like Ayub, Azam, Irfan Khan and Usman Khan would require time to settle down in international cricket, and the management would back them completely in the lead-up to the World Cup. “I think there is little time for rotation now because the World Cup is around the corner, and in the remaining matches. We will try to give the team we want to play with in the World Cup a proper opportunity,” Babar continued. “We will sort out whatever our bowling and batting combination is, and we have almost done that. We will play with our best possible XI in the remaining matches.” Will plan against Kohli Asked if Pakistan was specifically strategizing to stop India’s in-form batter Virat Kohli from scoring against them, Babar said that as a team, one always looked at the best players in an opposing team as the aim was to win against eleven players. “The thing is, we plan against all eleven players of a team, and we don’t know much about how the conditions will be in New York. But yes, he [Kohli] is one of the best players, and we will plan against him as well,” Babar said. No rifts in team Babar also made it clear there were no internal rifts in the team over the captaincy issue, and he was also excited about his second stint as Pakistan captain. “Whatever success I achieved previously as captain was because of the players who supported me, and the same is true now. Important is the board is backing us completely to do well,” he concluded.

Jake Fraser-McGurk's time will come: Josh Hazlewood on DC opener's T20 World Cup snub

Jake Fraser-McGurk’s time will come: Josh Hazlewood on DC opener’s T20 World Cup snub

Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood opened up on Jake Fraser-McGurk’s snub from the T20 World Cup 2024, saying that the DC opener’s time in Australian colours will come. However, Hazlewood lamented that neither he nor Steven Smith could be included in Australia’s 15-man T20 World Cup squad, admitting that Smith’s leadership and experience will be sorely missed in the Caribbean. Australia’s selectors sparked a debate last week by leaving Fraser-McGurk and Smith out of the 15-man squad. The Australian fans were furious that the 22-year-old T20 sensation had been overlooked despite his outstanding IPL performance. Notably, Fraser-McGurk has scored 259 runs in the first six innings of the IPL 2024, at an average of 43.16 and a strike rate of 158.56, with three half-centuries to his name. On his IPL debut, the 22-year-old hit a phenomenal 55 off 35 balls against LSG before going on to score an incredible 84 (27) against MI. “The way he goes about it is quite special, just the ball striking,” Hazlewood said. “Where do you fit him in? It’s so tough to fit into that top order with what we’ve got there with experience with Travis [Head], Mitch [Marsh] and Davey [Warner] in the top three, and then the middle order’s pretty good as well. “He’ll definitely get his time. He’s only young. He’ll be in the team sooner rather than later, I think.” IPL 2024 Full Coverage | IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings | 2024 IPL Full Schedule Hazlewood thought Smith was unlucky to miss out, given his batting ability in spinning circumstances and leadership experience. “Probably someone like Marshy will miss him being captain and just having another player on the field like Smudge [Smith] who you can just turn to at any time and get his advice,” Hazlewood said. “Obviously his batting and fielding as well. The conditions potentially could have suited his game and it’s always like picking up the pieces from a bad start is his job, but I think the way we’ve seen him bat for the Sixers [in the BBL], there’s a spot at the top as well, but again, you just can’t squeeze everyone in.” Hazlewood has been absent from the IPL this year, despite being a highly sought-after bowler in previous years. He was not selected at the auction because his availability was limited, and he wanted to be home for the birth of his son during the early stages of the tournament. He continued to bowl while at home in the hopes of being called up as an injury replacement in the IPL, but no such opportunity arose. Published By: Saurabh Kumar Published On: May 6, 2024

Each member of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad will get USD 100,000 if the team wins the ICC event in June in Americas, the country’s cricket board announced on Sunday. The announcement was made by the PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi after spending nearly two hours with the players here before their departure for the away T20 series against Ireland and England on Monday night. Naqvi also said that the prize money held no importance compared to lifting the trophy, expressing the hope that the team would raise the Pakistan flag. “Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi announced to give 100,000 dollars prize to every player for winning the T20 World Cup,” the PCB posted on social media. He also told the players “not to care about anyone” but to just play for Pakistan and demonstrate teamwork, and, “God willing”, victory will be gained by the team. Naqvi further said that all the players were united while also expressing the hope that fast-bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi would deliver a great performance in the tournament. “The country has a lot of expectations from you. You have to fulfil them,” he told the players. During his visit, the PCB chairman also handed out special shirts to players for achieving milestones. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohamad Rizwan was awarded a shirt for completing 3,000 T20 runs while pacer Naseem Shah was awarded a shirt for taking 100 T20 wickets. Rohit Sharma laughs, Agarkar comes up with 'experience' retort on Virat Kohli's strike rate question

Rohit Sharma laughs, Agarkar comes up with ‘experience’ retort on Virat Kohli’s strike rate question

Image Source : PTI/AP Rohit Sharma and Ajit Agarkar, the Indian captain and chairman of selectors addressed the press conference regarding the T20 World Cup squad Indian captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were pretty straightforward with their responses in the press conference in Mumbai on Thursday, May 2 with respect to the T20 World Cup announced a couple of days ago. The duo was asked pretty much everything from the omissions of Rinku Singh, and Shubman Gill to the presence of four spinners and form of certain players. One of the questions was regarding Virat Kohli’s strike rate and the first reaction from skipper Rohit suggested that they were expecting that. Rohit laughed instantly. It was a rather sheepish smile. Before he gestured towards Agarkar to respond to the question and the former India pacer mentioned that Kohli has been in terrific form in the season so far and came up with the experience retort while shedding light on the gap between IPL and international cricket. “I don’t think we have been discussing it. So, no look he’s been in great form fortunately in the IPL. So no concerns there at all. With regards to how it is going in the IPL, you are still going to a World Cup, it is still international, there’s still that gap there. So, you’ve got to prepare knowing that there is that gap. That’s where experience does matter a lot. If the tournament turned out to be where IPL is where 220 plays 220, I think we’ve still got enough in the team, the balance or the power that you can match that.  “There’s no point in overthinking. You look and take positives that are happening in the IPL, form of some of the guys, some of the newer guys coming through. At the end of the day, when you turn up for a World Cup game, the pressures are a little different,” Agarkar added. Watch the video here (1:27:27 – 1:28:51): Kohli has had a couple of knocks where his strike rate came under the scanner, however, he has been in outstanding touch with the bat playing for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Kohli has amassed 500 runs at an average of 71.4 and a strike rate of 147.49. India have option of playing Kohli at the top or at No 3 give the rest of the combination they want to go with.
