"It's A Shame": AB De Villiers On Racial Quota Chatter Around South Africa's T20 World Cup Squad

“It’s A Shame”: AB De Villiers On Racial Quota Chatter Around South Africa’s T20 World Cup Squad

AB De Villiers is not surprised that just days before South Africa renews its quest for an elusive World Cup, the talk back home is all about racial quota in the team. It’s a rinse-and-repeat sort of situation and de Villiers, who retired in 2018, is glad that he is a mere spectator to the situation now. “…it’s a shame going into a tournament to have the focus on that. I mean it’s nothing new, it’s just a shame,” lamented one of the greats of South African cricket. “Luckily this time around, I’ve had nothing to do with anything over there. I’m just a spectator,” the 40-year-old said in an interaction with PTI facilitated by ‘Jio Cinema’. The cause of outrage is the presence of just one black player in the squad for the T20 showpiece that will take place in the Americas from June 1. Considered the perennial bridesmaids, who tend to choke in crunch situations, South Africa somehow are always in the pre-tournament favourites bracket without actually living up to the tag. And having a deeply divisive topic take centre-stage just days before they begin their campaign is a far-from-ideal build-up for a country that has a troubled past when it comes to race relations. The Proteas will start off against the Netherlands in New York on June 8. Over the course of a season, six players of colour are required to be in the South Africa playing eleven including two from the black African community as per the policy introduced in 2016. With Kagiso Rabada being the only black African in the T20 World Cup squad, the national team is set to miss its target. Another black-African, Lungi Ngidi, is part of the travelling reserves. The other players of colour include Reeza Hendricks, Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi and Ottniel Baartman. “There are controversial moments back home as per usual with the South African squad just before a World Cup,” de Villiers said. “I think it’s a good team. It’s a shame about Lungi… (he) lost a bit of form, had a couple of injuries. Otherwise, he most probably would have been in the squad and there wouldn’t have been any controversial stuff back home,” he added. At the moment, Cricket South Africa doesn’t have a committee of selectors and the team is picked by head coaches Shukri Conrad (Tests) and Rob Walter (white-ball cricket). “Sometimes these things happen and it puts you under a bit of pressure as a selection panel and as a coach and a captain,” de Villiers said. “From what I remember is with the quota system, it’s an average team, an average number over the season and they don’t really look at every series, but as journalists sometimes enjoy steaming up things a bit,” he tried to put things in context. Following the selection of the squad earlier this month, former Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and former CSA and ICC president Ray Mali questioned the composition of the side. “Only one African player selected in the Proteas Team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 Team. Definitely a reserval (reversal) of the gains of transformation and doesn’t reflect fair representation of all South Africans in the national cricket tea,” Mbalula wrote on X. On SABC Sport, Mali said the game is heading backwards in the country. “I believe a lot has been achieved, but I believe we have gone backwards in terms of cricket – we have taken a step backwards instead of going forward,” said Mali. But de Villiers was a bit more empathetic towards those who made the choices and said he does not see anything sinister in the process. “Maybe they are short. Maybe they are well within their right to do whatever they were needed to do in this World Cup. “Keeping in mind there were a couple of injuries, a couple of out of form players. It’s never easy,” he said. On the upside, South Africa’s IPL stars have displayed ominous form in the preceding T20 league and that would surely give them confidence to go the distance in the World Cup too. Impact Player rule in IPL needs to be relooked ============================ Talking about the recently-concluded IPL, de Villiers said the Impact Player rule , which helped teams amass 250-plus totals as many as eight times this season, needs to be revised. “…what I really didn’t enjoy about the rule is actually subbing players who have already taken part in the game. That part of the rule doesn’t make sense. I feel it needs to be a fair swap. “If someone hasn’t taken part in the game, he needs to be swapped. If you feel that you are going to lack in the bowling or batting department, it’ll just make it a bit harder to strategise and it’ll be more of a risk to swap someone.” He also wants more than two fielders outside the ring in the powerplay. “I still feel T20 cricket needs to be a batters game, that’s why the fans come to the parks. They want to see the ball flying all over the park and into the night sky,” he said. “But I still you still want to see the bowlers outsmart batters sometimes…in the first six overs by maybe easing up on the restrictions. “Whether that’s four or five outside, I don’t know exactly but at least the bowler can plan,” he reasoned.  Topics mentioned in this article

He can be backed as top SA batter. Tabraiz Shamsi could be back in the South Africa team to bolster the attack. The spinners have done well on this pitch and Shamsi, given the quality he has, is likely to pick more than l.5 wickets in the game. For West Indies, Brandon King has been outstanding. He has scored over 100 runs across two matches and has been the best batter for his side. Back him as West Indies top batter. Gudakesh Motie has enjoyed the conditions, taking six wickets in two games. Back him as top Windies bowler. Both the games so far have seen at least one fifty being scored in the match and thus we there are great odds that a fifty will also be scored in the final game. West Indies vs South Africa 3rd T20 Match Prediction & Betting Tips West Indies will take on South Africa in the final T20I. The game will be played at the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica and will start at 12:30 AM IST on May 27. WI have been comprehensive in the two T20Is of the series. They picked up a crushing 28 run win over SA in the first game and then backed it up with another 16 run win in the second game. The batters have fired for West Indies, allowing them to score 175 and 207 in the two innings. With the ball, the spinners have choked SA for runs. For SA, they were better in the second game and scored 191 in a chase of 208, however, the middle order seems to be out of touch as the players have failed to fire in both games. However, the team won’t be concerned as they are playing a second string team and main players are not available for the series. West Indies vs South Africa Match Toss PredictionTeam batting first has won both games and thus the captains would like to win the toss and opt to bat first in final game. Once a strong total has been posted, it will be tough to chase here. West Indies vs South Africa Pitch ReportThe surface at the Sabina Park has been on the slower side. The ball has gripped and turned and scoring against the spinners have been very tough. The pacers though have been taken for plenty of runs. With short boundaries, a score of around 180-200 is par here. Jamaica Weather ReportThere are a few showers expected during the game. The temperature will be around the 30 degree mark and humidity will be 68 per cent. The wind speed will be 21 km/h. WI vs SA 2nd T20 Match Prediction & Betting Tips After a brilliant victory by the home team West Indies in the 1st match against South Africa, we move on to the next fixture. The 2nd T20 between WI and SA is scheduled to take place at Sabina Park in Jamaica on 25th May, starting at 12:30 AM (May 26) IST. South Africa was the favourite in the 1st match but West Indies turned the tables around with a comprehensive win. They look ready for the upcoming T20 World Cup which is slated to take place in the West Indies and the United States. Despite going without a full-strength squad, West Indies played brilliantly and handed South Africa a 28 run defeat. Take a look at the predictions and tips for the upcoming 2nd T20 between WI and SA. WI vs SA Match Toss PredictionThe toss winner will choose to bat first as the pitch gets slower in the later stages of the game. WI vs SA Pitch ReportWe saw both the sides struggling with the batting as in both the innings, only 3 players were able to reach double digit scores. Fast bowlers got good assistance as the Proteas pacers took all wickets in the first innings but then the pitch started getting slower and spinner Motie picked 3 wickets. We expect the same behaviour from the pitch in the 2nd game. The average innings score will be around 170. Jamaica Weather ReportThe weather report predicts cloudy day in Jamaica on Saturday. Get to Know Who will win NZ vs SA 2nd Test match and toss Prediction with Head to Head stats, Playing 11, CBTFJSK Tips, Betting Rates, Live score & winning percentage. MATCH: New Zealand vs South Africa DATE: Feb 13 – Feb 17, 2024TIME: 03:30 IST / 2:00 GMTVENUE: Seddon Park – Hamilton, New ZealandTOURNAMENT: New Zealand vs South Africa 2nd Test 2024 New Zealand vs South Africa Betting Tips Kane Williamson scored a century in both innings of the first Test of the series and he is our pick for New Zealand’s highest run scorer against South Africa. Kyle Jamieson took six wickets across the opening match and the tall pace bowler is our tip for New Zealand’s top wicket taker in this game.David Bedingham hit 119 runs for South Africa last week and the right-hander is well worth backing as South Africa’s highest run scorer in Hamilton. Captain Neil Brand took eight wickets in Mount Maunganui and the left-arm spinner is a strong choice for South Africa’s top wicket taker against New Zealand. Now averaging 55.12 from 170 Test innings, we recommend selecting Kane Williamson to hit over 31.5 runs in this match. New Zealand vs South Africa TV channels: The fans can watch the match live on Hotstar Live Streaming: Live streaming of the match will be available on the FAFA191 Cricket Exchange India and website. NZ vs SA 2nd Test Match Prediction & Betting Tips New Zealand and South Africa meet in the second and final Test in Hamilton with the game getting underway at 11:00am local time on Tuesday. It was a one-sided opening match of the series which saw New Zealand triumph by 281 runs in Mount Maunganui last week. Read on as we preview this game. The match takes place at Seddon Park on 13th February. New Zealand got ahead on Day 1 of the opening Test and never looked back as they won by a very large margin with a convincing display with both bat and ball in Mount Maunganui. Although Daryl Mitchell’s absence will leave a hole in the side, we still expect them to be far too strong. There certainly were some positives to take for South Africa from the first game but the truth is that they were completely outplayed and never looked capable of threatening to win the match. It would be a huge shock if they were able to then generate a stronger performance in Hamilton. NZ vs SA Match Toss PredictionIt is always a good batting surface in Hamilton and we expect that both teams will want to get first use of the pitch and post a large total. We predict both captains will choose to bat first. NZ vs SA Pitch ReportThere does not tend to be much turn for the spinners and the bowlers do have to work hard for their wickets. A par first innings score at Seddon Park will be over 500. Hamilton Weather ReportThe weather forecast is for consistent conditions across this Test in Hamilton with no rain but some cloudy spells across the five days with the temperature to reach the high twenties on most days.
