‘There’s a man behind the stumps…’: Hardik Pandya makes big comment on MS Dhoni after CSK win | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana delivered his standout IPL performance, claiming four wickets as the Chennai Super Kings defeated Mumbai Indians by 20 runs in an electrifying match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.Put into bat first, CSK’s star allrounder Shivam Dube and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad showcased brilliant stroke play, each notching up half-centuries, propelling the five-time champions to a mammoth 206/4.In reply, Pathirana dismissed Ishan Kishan (23), Surya Kumar Yadav (0), Tilak Varma (31), and Romario Shepherd (1), finishing with figures of 4 for 28, limiting the Mumbai Indians to 186 for six in their allotted 20 overs.IPL: POINTS TABLE | ORANGE CAP | PURPLE CAPMI captain Pandya, who managed just 2 runs before being dismissed by Tushar Deshpande, acknowledged Pathirana’s pivotal role in CSK’s victory.Pandya also lauded the strategic acumen of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose aggressive batting display against him in the final four deliveries, yielding three consecutive sixes, proved decisive in CSK’s triumph.“It (target) was definitely gettable, but they bowled pretty well. Pathirana was the difference. They were smart with the plans and their approach. They got the hang of it, there’s a man behind the stumps (Dhoni) who tells them what’s working, that helps,” Pandya said after the match. “It (pitch) was holding up a bit and getting difficult. It was about batting well and keeping the intent. We were going quite well (in the run chase) till Pathirana came into the attack and took those two wickets,” Pandya added.“It was about what is best at that time, we could have done something different. I like to play percentage cricket, it would have been difficult for him (Dube) against seamers rather than spin. We are on the road for the next four games, need to play good cricket, need to keep the intensity high,” the MI skipper said.Mumbai Indians will next face Punjab Kings on April 18 in Chandigarh, while CSK will be up against Lucknow Super Giants on April 19 in Lucknow.

‘Those three sixes proved to be the difference’: Ruturaj Gaikwad praises MS Dhoni’s epic cameo | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad hailed the young wicketkeeper MS Dhoni for his exceptional performance, particularly his feat of hitting three successive sixes off Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.Gaikwad recognised Dhoni’s pivotal contribution, acknowledging that it ultimately made the decisive difference in the match.Dhoni scored 20 runs off four balls, and that proved to be the exact margin of victory for CSK.Set 207 for victory, five-time winners Mumbai finished on 186/6 even though Rohit Sharma raised his ton in 61 balls.IPL: POINTS TABLE | ORANGE CAP | PURPLE CAPDhoni arrived in the middle with the scorecard showing 186/4 in 19.2 overs, and in no time, vintage Dhoni (20 off 4 balls) made the scoreboard read 206/4 in the stipulated 20 overs, with the help of three massive sixes and a double off the last ball of the innings. “The young wicketkeeper scoring those three sixes helped us a lot, that proved to be the difference. We needed those 10-15 extra runs for this kind of venue. In the middle phase, Bumrah bowled really well. I feel we were spot on with our execution with the ball despite them scoring some great shots. I would have taken 6 overs 60 at the powerplay,” Gaikwad said at the post-match interaction.“You need to be on the mark with bowling and batting at this venue. Our Malinga bowled really well today, he nailed those yorkers. Not to forget, Tushar and Shardul also did well. (On plans ahead) I think we need to keep it simple, encourage all to be in a good headspace and continue the same way. Jinks was carrying a bit of a niggle, so thought it was better for him to open. I’m fine batting anywhere, plus it is the added responsibility as the team captain,” Gaikwad added.Gaikwad and the in-form Shivam Dube powered Chennai, who won their fifth title last year, to 206/4. Gaikwad hit 69 and Dube smashed an unbeaten 66 before warhorse M.S. Dhoni smashed three successive sixes in the 20th over to take Chennai past 200.Sri Lanka quick Matheesha Pathirana then took four wickets to push Mumbai to their fourth loss of the season.

MI vs CSK, IPL 2024 highlights: Matheesha Pathirana overshadows Rohit Sharma’s century as Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by 20 runs | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Matheesha Pathirana and the timeless MS Dhoni dealt decisive blows as Chennai Super Kings triumphed over Mumbai Indians by a margin of 20 runs, despite Rohit Sharma‘s resilient, unbeaten 105 in their clash in the Indian Premier League on Sunday.Dhoni’s onslaught of three consecutive sixes in the final over, bowled by Hardik Pandya, propelled CSK to a commanding total of 206 for four, with Dhoni himself reaching 20 not out from just four deliveries.Pathirana’s stellar performance, claiming 4 wickets for 28 runs, effectively curbed MI’s chase, restricting them to 186 for six. Rohit showcased his brilliance with only his second IPL century and first since 2012, smashing 11 boundaries and five maximums in his 63-ball innings. However, his remarkable innings lacked support from the rest of the MI lineup, despite the favorable batting conditions at the Wankhede Stadium. The defending champions, CSK, secured their first away victory of the season, propelling them to third place with eight points, while MI suffered their fourth defeat in six matches, languishing at the eighth position in the standings. In a game wherein the loudest cheers were reserved for Dhoni, Mumbai skipper Pandya continued to get booed intermittently. There were, though, a section of fans cheering him on at least once, like they did in the last game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.Unlike CSK, who got their majority of runs in the last 10 overs (136), Mumbai Indians remained in the hunt of in the initial part through Rohit’s sustained acceleration and some handy contributions from others.Once again, Rohit set the platform for Mumbai with a sturdy 70-run stand in seven overs with Ishan Kishan, who raced to 23 off 15 balls (3x4s, 1x6s).With MI on charge, pacer Pathirana produced a two-wicket over after the powerplay accounting for Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav (0), getting him caught at third man with Mustafizur Rahman producing a juggling act at the ropes to complete the catch. Tilak Varma aided Rohit with a 20-ball 31 laced with five fours, adding 60 off 38 balls for the third wicket, but Pathirana’s return broke their stand. However, it was the Mumbai duo of Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande tilted the game in favour of CSK, producing two tight overs which broke the back of MI’s chase.Pandya fell for just two but consumed six balls and Tim David hammered a couple of sixes but failed to capitalise. Amid all this, Rohit remained stuck at the other end watching the game slip away despite his best effort.Earlier. Dhoni’s ballistic 20 garnished forceful fifties by Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad as Chennai Super Kings powered to a strong 206 for four.Dube (66 not out, 10×4, 2×6) and Gaikwad (69), who milked 90 runs off a mere 45 balls for the third wicket, gave Chennai innings steam in the initial and middle passages of the play before Dhoni mesmerized a packed Wankhede with vintage shot-making. The former CSK skipper hammered three consecutive sixes off MI skipper Pandya (2/43) to help his side collect 26 runs off the final over.Dhoni’s stunning knock – which had the balls sailing over long-off, wide long-on and deep square leg – also pushed Chennai past the 200-run mark, which did appear tough until that final over.Even though he could not push beyond 69, which came off 40 balls with five sixes and as many boundaries, Gaikwad appeared in prime form. The CSK skipper hit through the line effortlessly to clear ropes and when the MI bowlers challenged him by angling their deliveries into his body, Gaikwad improvised to find his runs without taking any unwanted risks.Dube remained unbeaten on 66 off 38 balls, studded with 10 fours and two sixes.(With inputs from PTI)

Image Source : BCCI/IPL Chennai Super Kings kept their calm with the ball in the end to defend a score at Wankhede Stadium against the Mumbai Indians Chennai Super Kings (CSK), irrespective of the venue, the conditions, the long batting line-up of the Mumbai Indians, pulled off what is rare at the Wankhede Stadium, defending a total, especially in the night games as the Men in Yellow won by 20 runs on Sunday, April 14. Former Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma smashed his second IPL century but no other batter supported him from the other end. Matheesha Pathirana was the difference between the two sides in the end as he took four wickets to break the back of the chase for the home team. At 130/2 in the 14th over, Mumbai Indians were on course to chase down 207 runs with two set batters in, however, the wicket of Tilak Varma proved to be the turning point as the strike dried up for Rohit and the incoming batters kept hitting out to the fielders on the boundary and eventually the Mumbai Indians fell short. Captain Hardik Pandya struggled to get going, Tim David hit a couple of big sixes but he too got out as the pressure kept mounting on Rohgit and the required run rate kept rising to 14, 15 and 17. Rohit did get a few boundaries at the end but it just wasn’t enough and the Mumbai Indians will be disappointed at how the chase panned out ultimately.  More to follow…

Vaughan leads reactions as calls for CSK all-rounder selection get louder – India TV

Image Source : AP Shivam Dube continued his smashing form in the 2024 edition of the IPL as he slammed an unbeaten 66 MS Dhoni may have ensured that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got a total in excess of 200 against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the biggest rivalry clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 14, however, the innings belonged to Shivam Dube and his burst in the middle overs that helped five-time champions stay on the course of a big score. Dube stayed unbeaten on 66 off just 38 deliveries as he entered the top five on the list of leading run-getters of the tournament. Dube currently has 242 runs to his name in six matches at an average of 60.5 and a strike rate of 163. Dube single-handedly has taken care of the middle-overs hitting for the Super Kings. Dube, who dismisses any and every spinner from its presence, has developed his game against the pacers and slowly and gradually is proving to be a key acquisition for the Super Kings and auditioning more than decently for a place in India’s T20 World Cup. On Sunday, as soon as Dube came in to bat in the eighth over of the innings, MI skipper Hardik Pandya didn’t bowl a single over of spinners after that and Dube was still able to play at a strike rate of close to 175. Whether it was Akash Madhwal, Hardik Pandya, Gerald Coetzee or Romario Shepherd, who got special treatment from the left-hander, Dube didn’t leave any of them. If the ball was in his area, he smashed it. With the consistency in hitting that he is showing, Dube has made himself a frontrunner to get picked for the T20 World Cup, not just based on his IPL form. Dube was also the highest run-getter in the series against Afghanistan with a couple of fifties and calls to get him picked have gotten louder. Take a look- CSK finished with 206 runs on the board, however, Mumbai Indians have kept themselves on course to chase the total down with Rohit Sharma leading the charge with the bat.

The former CSK skipper hammered three consecutive sixes off MI skipper Hardik Pandya to help his side collect 26 runs off the final over. Dhoni’s stunning knock – which had the balls sailing over long-off, wide long-on and deep square leg – also pushed Chennai past the 200-run mark, which did appear tough until that final over. On a placid wicket, CSK batters flourished between overs 11-15 to collect 79 runs to set course for a big total, with Gaikwad and Dube showing their rich form. CSK made a sedate start through a new opening pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Rachin Ravindra . However, the move did not work as Rahane was caught by Pandya at mid-on off pacer Gerald Coetzee. Gaikwad’s acceleration in the latter half of the powerplay helped CSK reach a par 48/1 as the CSK captain made his intentions clear. Even though he could not push beyond 69, which came off 40 balls with five sixes and as many boundaries, Gaikwad appeared in prime form. The CSK skipper hit through the line effortlessly to clear ropes and when the MI bowlers challenged him by angling their deliveries into his body, Gaikwad improvised to find his runs without taking any unwanted risks. Gaikwad’s innings ended when his counterpart Pandya foxed him with a slower delivery which he ended up hitting high in the air to Nabi at long on. Dube went after Pandya in the 10th over, making the most of the bowler’s wayward line and lengths to collect 15 runs including three fours. Dube, though, took a liking for the pace of Romario Shepherd. Having hit the West Indian for a couple of fours in their initial exchanges to collect 12 runs off the 11th over, Dube smacked two sixes and as many fours off Shepherd’s second over to add another 22. With Mumbai Indians holding back Jasprit Bumrah for the death overs, Gaikwad and Dube ensured other bowlers were put to the sword. "What Have They Identified?": CSK Coach Stephen Fleming's Blunt T20 World Cup Message To BCCI

“What Have They Identified?”: CSK Coach Stephen Fleming’s Blunt T20 World Cup Message To BCCI

Former New Zealand captain and five-time IPL-winning coach Stephen Fleming believes that India should decide on their style of play for the upcoming T20 World Cup and pick the in-form players accordingly. India will head into this year’s T20 global showpiece in the Caribbean and the USA to make yet another bid to end their wait for an ICC trophy, which extended further after they lost to Australia in the final of the 50-overs World Cup last year. It has been more than 10 years since India last won a global competition, which has, in a way kept ageing stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the mix despite growing calls for the T20I side to be blooded with young talent. “The thing for me is, what type of game plan do they want to play during the World Cup? What have they identified as the right style of play for India in an away condition?,” Fleming said when asked if CSK’s all-rounder Shivam Dube is primed for India call-up for the World Cup. “Then put players into that rather than just picking players and trying to find a game plan. I would be looking at the style of play that I would want, and then pick the players that are in-form and can perform the role that will best win that design,” Fleming said on the sidelines of CSK’s training session ahead of their IPL match against Mumbai Indians. Fleming said the amount of sheer power which Dube generates is good enough to compel the selectors into looking at him as one of the prospects for the T20 World Cup. “It’s probably one of the hardest jobs in world cricket, isn’t it, being an Indian selector. On one hand, very jealous as a New Zealander looking at the amount of talent that is on show and new players every game sort of pop up,” he said. “I love his power. I’m biased, aren’t I? But I think when you have a bit different power like that; I would have him in the side,” Fleming said. The former Kiwi skipper said Dube is reaping the benefits of the work that he has put in to face different kinds of bowlers, which has complemented CSK in return given the rule changes in the IPL such as the introduction of the impact player. “A lot of work last year to be honest, working him into that role and trying to use the change of rules to our advantage. He did a lot of work mentally last year on what that would look like, and then it was about opportunity. How long an opportunity would take for us to realise his potential,” Fleming said. “Or more importantly, for him to realise how good he could be. Since then, he has gone to another level. He works hard on all aspects. I know there’s a short-ball aspect that has been much publicised. But there’s a lot more to him than that,” he added. Fleming once again mentioned Dube’s power-hitting which has been a standout factor in his batting. “If anything, it deflects away from other areas. He uses that predictability to his advantage now. I haven’t seen a guy hit it harder (and) consistently hit it harder.” “Some of the power he can generate both from spin and from seam bowling is quite unique. When he’s in form like this, he’s a real weapon for us during those middle overs,” the CSK head coach added. "CSK Will Be Responsible If Dube Is Not Selected For T20 WC": Ex-India Star's Brutal Warning

“CSK Will Be Responsible If Dube Is Not Selected For T20 WC”: Ex-India Star’s Brutal Warning

Former India batter Manoj Tiwary has backed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Shivam Dube for a place in the T20 World Cup squad, ahead of Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya. Tiwary questioned Hardik’s role as a bowler so far this season in IPL, with the MI captain bowling only one over in the last three matches. The former Bengal captain feels if Hardik wants to seal his place in the squad for the T20 World Cup, then he’ll have to prove his bowling credentials. Read here: IPL 2024 Points Table Tiwary also highlighted that Hardik has been a tad bit expensive for MI with the bowl, conceding over 11 runs per over. “If he wants to play in the Indian T20 World Cup team as an all-rounder, he has to bowl. Look at his economy rate. It’s almost 11. He is not performing this season,” Tiwary said during a discussion on Cricbuzz. Tiwary also asserted that if Dube fails to make the T20 World Cup squad, his IPL franchise will be responsible for his exclusion as CSK have been using him as an impact sub so far this season. “With this form, Hardik won’t be picked in the T20 World Cup. See, Agarkar is a strong character and hence can take those bold decisions. And if Dube is not picked in the T20 World Cup, CSK will be responsible for it, because they are not allowing him to bowl. I have been saying this for a long time, if you want a replacement for Hardik, get Dube ready,” he added. Tiwary labelled Dube as a “clever” bowler, pointing out his exploits in the T20I series against Afghanistan earlier this year. “At one time we also had Venkatesh Iyer. Suddenly, both of them stopped bowling. We should be looking at the bigger goal. We are talking about the World Cup here and India haven’t been able to lift that trophy for a long time. So we have to plan for that ahead of time. Now Hardik is not in form and if you pick Dube in the squad, how much he can perform as a bowler is not known. But as far as I know, Dube is a clever bowler. Remember that T20I series at home against Afghanistan,” he further explained. Topics mentioned in this article
