IPL 2024 | Shikhar Dhawan to remain unavailable for PBKS vs CSK clash, confirms Sunil Joshi

IPL 2024 | Shikhar Dhawan to remain unavailable for PBKS vs CSK clash, confirms Sunil Joshi

PBKS spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi has given a major update on their captain Shikhar Dhawan’s injury ahead of their next clash against CSK on Sunday, May 5 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. Speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, Joshi revealed that the 38-year-old has made rapid progress in rehabilitation and is being closely monitored. However, the southpaw won’t be available in the upcoming fixture but Joshi hoped that the skipper is likely to be fit for the last two matches of the season. Notably, Dhawan last played this season during Punjab’s fifth fixture against SRH on April 9 at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, Chandigarh. Since then, a shoulder injury has forced him out of action. “Shikhar, he’s under rehab, for this game he isn’t available and is being monitored closely. Hopefully, he should be back for the last two games,” said Joshi in the pre-match press conference. Sam Curran has done well as a leader: Joshi Further speaking ahead, Joshi rued Dhawan’s absence but lauded Sam Curran for doing a fantastic job by filling in the skipper’s shoes. “It happened last year as well. Shikhar was in form in the first five games and then again he got injured and then again Sam came in as a replacement. In fact, I should not be saying that it has been repeated the same way. We didn’t want it to happen. Nevertheless, I think he has done well as a leader and he has stepped up as a leader too with the team,” he added. Before getting injured, Dhawan scored 252 runs from five innings at an average of 30.40 and a strike rate of 125.61 with one fifty to his name. In his absence, Curran didn’t have a memorable beginning as a skipper, with Punjab losing three games on the trot. However, the team made a brilliant comeback by winning their last two fixtures, which included the highest successful run chase in the history of the tournament against KKR in Match 42. Meanwhile, Punjab are currently placed in the sixth spot on the points table with four wins from ten matches, having eight points to their name. They will be eager to win all of their remaining four fixtures to stay in contention for the playoffs. Published By: Saurabh Kumar Published On: May 4, 2024

Shikhar Dhawan out of action for ‘at least seven-ten days’, set to miss next two games for Punjab Kings – India TV

Image Source : PTI Shikhar Dhawan. Punjab Kings have suffered a major blow mid-season as their skipper Shikhar Dhawan is set to miss the two upcoming fixtures against Mumbai Indians (April 18) and Gujarat Titans (April 21) with a shoulder injury. The Head of Cricket Development at Punjab Kings, Sanjay Bangar, revealed that Shikhar “could be out of action for at least seven-ten days”. Shikhar missed PBKS’ sixth fixture of the season on Saturday (April 13) when they took on table-toppers Rajasthan Royals on their home turf at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh.  Punjab’s star overseas allrounder Sam Curran stepped in for Shikhar and was the stand-in captain during the clash against Rajasthan. Speaking after the three-wicket loss to Rajasthan, Bangar first mentioned that Shikhar could be “out of action for at least a couple of days” but later added that the injury may put him on the sidelines for “at least seven-ten days”. “He’s having a shoulder injury, so he is likely to be out for at least a couple of days, I would say,” Bangar said during the post-match conference. “Having an experienced opener, somebody like Shikhar, who has experience of playing on such wickets, becomes extremely crucial (for the squad). “We have to wait and see how he responds to the treatment. At the moment, it seems that he could be out of action for at least seven-ten days.” Punjab missed Dhawan badly against Rajasthan as their batting order failed to put up a winning score on the board. The consistent batting failure is ailing Punjab and Bangar admitted that it is a cause of concern for the team management. “Certainly is a cause for concern that the top order is not making enough runs for us,” Bangar said. “They are trying hard – I am not saying that they are not applying themselves – but it’s just not coming. Low-scoring games, especially at Mullanpur, the way the wicket is… that also has a factor. Because if you see, some of the scores have been pretty low. “All the three games that we have played here, in the first six overs, with the new ball, the wicket tends to just jag a little bit, and uneven bounce as well. So maybe that is also a contributing factor because, not only us, the visiting teams and their top order are facing issues,” Bangar added. Rajasthan Royals extend their lead at top with hard-fought win over Punjab King – India TV

Image Source : BCCI/IPL Rajasthan Royals players against Punjab Kings on April 13, 2024 PBKS vs RR: Rajasthan Royals recorded a thrilling three-wicket win over Punjab Kings to extend their lead in the Indian Premier League 2024 on Saturday. Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan became the first team to record five wins in the IPL 2024 as they swiftly returned to winning ways. Shikhar Dhawan-less PBKS were restricted to 147 after impressive bowling from Keshav Maharaj and Avesh Khan at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Rajasthan also struggled in the low-scoring chase but managed to clinch two big points with a ball remaining. After an impressive start from struggling youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal, the Caribbean big-hitter Shimron Hetmyer smashed 27* off just 10 balls, including a match-winning six off Arshdeep Singh.  Rajasthan Royals won the toss and elected to bat first with new signings Tanush Kotian and Rovman Powell replacing Ravichandran Ashwin and Jos Butller respectively. Punjab were also forced to make two changes with Liam Livingstone and Atharva Taide coming in for Sikandar Raza and skipper Shikhar Dhawan. Punjab lost only one wicket in powerplay overs in the form of Shimron Hetmyer but the hosts failed to find big shots. Rajasthan bowlers bowled impressive and greedy spells to keep Punjab batters grounded for the majority of the innings. Impact substitute Ashutosh Sharma impressed by smashing 31 off 16 balls, including 17 runs in the penultimate over, as Punjab posted 147/8 total in 20 overs. Keshav Maharaj and Avesh Khan picked two wickets each with the former conceding runs at an impressive economy rate of 5.75. Rajasthan surprisingly send debutant bowling all-rounder Kotian to open an innings with impact substitute Yashasvi Jaiswal. The duo pulled off a 56-run stand for the first wicket but Kotian struggled for an aggressive approach throughout his innings. South African ace pacer Kagiso Rabada shifted the momentum towards Punjab with big wickets of Jaiswal and Sanju Samson. Defending 43 runs in death overs, Arshdeep Singh removed in-form Riayn Parag and Harshal Patel dismissed Dhruv Jurel to put Punjab in a confident position. But Shimron Hetmyer’s heroics in the last over off Arshdeep Singh helped Rajasthan Royals to walk away with two points. Hetmyer clinched the Player of the Match award as Rajasthan extended their lead at the top with four more points than second-placed Kolkata Knight Riders. Punjab Kings playing XI: Atharva Taide, Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh (substituted by Ashutosh Sharma), Sam Curran (c), Liam Livingstone, Shashank Singh, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Harpreet Brar, Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh. Fans question PBKS as Sam Curran leads in place of Shikhar Dhawan vs RR – India TV

Image Source : BCCI/IPL Sam Curran was leading the Punjab Kings in place of Shikhar Dhawan against the Rajasthan Royals Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a different captain walk out for the toss against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the IPL 2024 game at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh. Sam Curran, who led the Men in Red in three games last season, stood in for Shikhar Dhawan, who had a bit of a niggle and hence was ruled out of the game. Atharva Taide, the Vidarbha batter replaced Dhawan in the batting line-up. Even though Curran standing in for Dhawan was a continuation, however, it surprised many as everyone expected Jitesh Sharma to lead the Punjab Kings in case the veteran opener wasn’t available. When the captains day happened in Ahmedabad on March 21, Jitesh Sharma represented the Punjab Kings as vice-captain when Dhawan was sick.  “It’s showtime. The #TATAIPL is here and WE are ready to ROCK & ROLL Presenting the 9 captains with PBKS being represented by vice-captain Jitesh Sharma,” the IPL handle had said then. However, seeing Curran at the toss, confused fans as it showed lack of clarity from the management and the amount of trust they have in Jitesh as a captain. Here are some of the reactions: Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and opted to field and his bowlers delivered the goods by restricting the Punjab Kings to 147. Keshav Maharaj was the star of the show with the ball for the Royals as he registered figures for 2/23 with the ball. The Kings were 6 down for 104 and were staring down the barrel before Ashutosh Sharma’s 16-ball 31 cameo lifted them to 147. It might not be a winning score but has given something for the Kings to bowl at. Punjab have a good record with Curran as a captain, having won two out of three games and would hope that it stays that way but their bowlers will have to bowl out of their skins to get the result on their side.

New signing Keshav Maharaj claimed his first IPL wickets while in-form Avesh Khan took two for 32 to raise Rajasthan’s hopes to extend their lead in the points table. The visiting side also produced some brilliant fielding efforts at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur to deny Punjab 150-plus total. Captain Sanju Samson stole the limelight again with his brilliant fielding effort to run out Liam Livingstone in the 18th over. Ashutosh Sharma, coming in as an impact player, played Yuzvendra Chahal’s delivery at deep mid-wicket and called for a single. Livingstone tried to find the second but Ashutosh was not interested and sent the English star back to stikers’ end.  Samson brilliantly collected a low throw from Tanush Kotian and flicked the ball on stumps while going down on the ground. The replay found Livingstone an inch short of the white line and was given run out by the third umpire. The balance has been good, we’d have liked to win a few more games, but the middle-order looks good, especially Shashank and Ashutosh. We’ve got exciting players and plenty of quality,” said Curran. Rajasthan, on the other hand, had a few changes in their line-up as Jos Buttler and R Ashwin incurred an injury before the match. Hence, the the visitors included Rovman Powell and Tanush Kotian in their XI. “We’ll bowl first, it looks like a decent wicket to bowl first.
