Virat Kohli, spinners shine as Bengaluru eliminate Punjab Kings from playoff race – India TV

BCCI/IPL Virat Kohli and Jonny Bairstow in the PBKS vs RCB IPL 2024 match on May 9, 2024 Royal Challengers Benagluru registered a dominant 60-run win over Punjab Kings to continue their resurgence in the IPL 2024 on Thursday. A win boosted Bengaluru’s chances of making the playoff significantly but Punjab Kings became the second team after Mumbai Indians to suffer an early elimination. Virat Kohli produced a memorable knock by smashing 92 runs off just 47 balls as Bengaluru posted a 241/7, their third-highest total in IPL, while batting first at Dharamsala’s HPCA Stadium. Then spinners Karn Sharma and Swapnil Singh claimed early wickets to bowl out Punjab to an 181 total in 17 overs. Both teams needed two points to remain in contention for the playoff qualification. Punjab recalled Liam Livingstone in the place of the South African pacer Kagiso Rabada while the speedster Lockie Ferguson replaced Glenn Maxwell for Bengaluru. After being forced out to bat first, in-form Virat Kohli continued his red-hot form with an aggressive approach from the beginning. Bengaluru lost skipper Faf du Plessis and batting all-rounder Will Jacks early in the powerplay but Kohli kept the runs flowing a stunning batting. Kohli and Rajat Patidar added 76 runs for the third wicket with the latter recording his fourth fifty of the season in just 21 balls. Kohli also introduced his sixth fifty in the IPL 2024 in 32 balls but missed out on his century by just eight runs. He top-scored with 92 runs off just 47 balls with the help of seven fours and six sixes to display his remarkable big-hitting skills again. Cameron Green contributed with 46 runs and Dinesh Karthik played a quick cameo as Bengaluru posted a huge total in a must-win game. Harshal Patel took three wickets for 47 and the debutant pacer Vidwath Kaverappa picked two for Punjab Kings. Chasing a record tough target, Punjab Kings lost opener Prabhsimran Singh in the very first over off Swapnil Singh’s delivery. Rilee Rossouw and Jonny Bairstow then quickly added 65 runs for the second wicket to keep  Punjab alive in the chase. Rossouw produced his first fifty of the season in just 21 balls but was dismissed by Karn Sharma after scoring 61 off 27 balls. Punjab lost both settled Rossouw and Bairstow in quick succession to spin and then were never able to make a comeback. Shashank Singh scored 37 runs off 19 balls to show some fight in the middle over but didn’t get much support from his teammates. Mohammed Siraj made a late impact with three wickets to bowl out Punjab Kings to 181 in 17 overs. Virat Kohli bagged the Player of the Match award for his memorable knock. Chennai have lost three of their last four games, injury to Deepak Chahar will not help, Mustafizur Rahman has already left and the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is yet to win a toss. In Dharamsala however, the toss won’t matter much, especially since it’s a day game and a fresh wicket with small boundaries is likely to help the batters across the 40 overs. Punjab still have the destiny in their own hands and they have to believe that they can make a difference, given the table fluctuations so much so that, if they win on Sunday, three teams will be with 10 points in 11 games. Delhi already have played 11 matches with five wins and six losses and both Punjab and Chennai will be on the same level as the Rishabh Pant-led side. MS Dhoni: 'Don't do that in a team game': Irfan Pathan questions MS Dhoni's decision not to take 'singles' | Cricket News

MS Dhoni: ‘Don’t do that in a team game’: Irfan Pathan questions MS Dhoni’s decision not to take ‘singles’ | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has raised concerns over MS Dhoni’s decision-making during Chennai Super Kings’ recent clash against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League, with specific focus on Dhoni’s approach towards strike rotation and his struggles against spin bowling. In a match where CSK set Punjab Kings a below-par target of 163 runs, Dhoni’s contribution of 14 off 11 balls came under scrutiny, particularly as Punjab Kings went on to chase down the target comfortably, securing a seven-wicket victory with 13 deliveries to spare. Pathan, speaking on Star Sports, expressed disappointment over Dhoni’s reluctance to take singles, remarking, “He shouldn’t have done that (refusing a single). This is a team game. Don’t do that in a team game. The other guy [Daryl Mitchell] is also an international player. If he had been a bowler, I would have understood it for sure,” Pathan criticized Dhoni’s decision-making, particularly his treatment of New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell. “You have done that with (Ravindra) Jadeja and with Mitchell as well. You don’t need to do that. He could have avoided it,” Pathan added, highlighting the negative impact of Dhoni’s actions on the team dynamic. Pathan also lauded Punjab Kings’ skipper Sam Curran‘s tactical acumen, particularly his decision to introduce spinner Rahul Chahar in the 19th over against Dhoni. “Curran getting a spinner to bowl the 19th over was a masterstroke because considering the form MS Dhoni is in, he could have taken the game way forward in those two overs. He could have scored 30 runs in two overs but they didn’t allow him to do that,” Pathan acknowledged, recognizing the astute captaincy. Reflecting on Dhoni’s struggles against spin bowling, Pathan noted, “You bowled to him with excellent planning. Although a six was hit for sure in Arshdeep’s over, he also bowled well. He (Dhoni) has been unable to score runs against spinners in the last few years, which is why he is bringing himself down the order. He is scoring runs in the last over when the fast bowlers are thinking of bowling yorkers.”Pathan’s critique highlights the tactical intricacies and strategic decisions that unfolded during the CSK vs Punjab Kings encounter.

Punjab Kings boost playoff qualification hopes with thumping win over Chennai Super Kings – India TV

Image Source : AP Punjab Kings players celebrating during the CSK vs PBKS IPL 2024 game in Chennai on May 1, 2024 Punjab Kings pulled off a dominating seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the 49th match of the Indian Premier League 2024 on Wednesday. Spinners produced a brilliant performance to restrict Chennai to a 162 total and then an impressive innings from Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw led Punjab to an easy chase with 13 balls remaining at MA Chidambaram Stadium. A win thrusted Punjab Kings to seventh position in the points table with four wins in ten games boosting their chances to secure a playoff qualification. Chennai Super Kings’ inconsistent form continued with their fifth defeat in ten games but the defending champions maintain their fourth place in the standings. After winning the toss, the stand-in skipper Sam Curran elected to bowl first with the same playing eleven. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s CSK were forced to make two major changes with Richard Gleeson and Shadul Thakur coming in for unavailable Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande. Openers Ajinkya Rahane and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave Chennai a strong start by scorching 64 runs for the first wicket. But Punjab Kings made a stunning comeback in the middle overs with spinner Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar taking two wickets each. Gaikwad continued his red-hot form by top-scoring with 62 runs off 48 balls and also went past Virat Kohli to claim the Orange Cap this season. Gaikwad didn’t get much support from the other end as Punjab bowlers restricted Chennai to a decent total of 162/7 in 20 overs. Debutant veteran Richard Gleeson balanced the game with an early wicket of impact substitute Prabhsimran Singh. But Punjab avoided losing momentum with Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw producing a match-defining 64-run partnership for the second wicket.  On his only second delivery in the IPL 2024, Shivam Dube displayed his bowling skills to deny Bairstow his fifty in the tenth over and Shardul Thakur bowled out Rossouw in the 12th over to raise some hopes for Chennai to make a late comeback.  But the in-form duo of Sam Curran and Shashank Singh avoided further fall by adding unbeaten 50 runs for the fourth wicket to lead Punjab Kings to an easy seven-wicket win with 13 balls remaining. Harpreet Brar won the Player of the Match award for his two for 17 figures.  Chennai Super Kings Playing XI: Ajinkya Rahane (substituted by Sameer Rizvi, Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), Daryl Mitchell, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (wk), Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Richard Gleeson, Mustafizur Rahman. IPL 2024 | Virender Sehwag slams Sam Curran after PBKS vs GT: Wouldn't have him in my team

IPL 2024 | Virender Sehwag slams Sam Curran after PBKS vs GT: Wouldn’t have him in my team

Virender Sehwag has slammed PBKS stand-in skipper Sam Curran, saying that he wouldn’t have him in the team as a batting or a bowling all-rounder as Punjab slumped to their 6th loss of the season. Curran scored 20 off 19 balls and picked up one wicket from his two overs as he conceded 18 runs. GT would end up winning the match as PBKS’ Mullanpur struggles continued. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag was very critical of Curran performances with both bat and ball, saying that a person who is doing some batting and bowling isn’t helping the side. The former India cricketer said that he needs to help the side with either the bat or with the ball, which he feels the England all-rounder has struggled to do all season. “I wouldn’t keep Sam Curran as a batting all-rounder or a bowling all-rounder. Because such a player is of no use, who does some batting and some bowling. Either you win the game with your batting or win the game with your bowling. Either you hit the bullseye or you don’t perform at all,” said Sehwag. Curran has opened the batting for PBKS in the last two games but hasn’t made a strong impact up top. IPL 2024 Full Coverage | IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings | 2024 IPL Full Schedule How well has Curran fared this season? Curran started things off with a fine performance with the bat against DC as he scored 63 to get PBKS off to a winning start. However, since then, the England all-rounder has struggled to make any impact with the ball or bat. In 8 matches so far, Curran has just 153 runs to his name with an average of 19. Curran had scored 276 runs last season in the IPL at an average of 27.60. In terms of bowling, while he has picked up 11 wickets, the economy rate has been 8.79 and he decided to only use himself twice against GT. Curran and Punjab will next be in action against KKR at the Eden Gardens on Friday, April 26 as they look to end their losing streak and return back to winning ways. The defeat to Gujarat means that PBKS are 9th on the table. Published On: Apr 22, 2024

Ashutosh Sharma was unbelievable, our nerves were tested: MI skipper Hardik

Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya and Punjab Kings’ stand-in captain Sam Curran during the toss ceremony before an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 cricket match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, in Mohali, on April 18, 2024. | Photo Credit: PTI Punjab Kings’ cricketer Ashutosh Sharma’s exploits with the willow drew enormous praise from Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya as well as his team’s stand-in captain Sam Curran, with the former terming it an “unbelievable” display. Ashutosh and Shashank Singh have emerged as the unlikely heroes for Punjab Kings this IPL season but the failure of the top-order has seen the team slump to ninth spot in the IPL table despite the some breathtaking performances from the duo. On Thursday, Ashutosh virtually took the game away from Mumbai Indians with his 28-ball 61 before PBKS lost by nine runs chasing 193. Ashutosh also executed a stunning sweep shot against pacer Jasprit Bumrah, something which has not been done quite often against India’s pace spearhead. “Unbelievable, playing the way he (Ashutosh) did and hitting the ball off the middle. (It is) great for his future. We did speak in the timeout about it, not about how we look, we will keep fighting and make sure (that) we don’t bowl the soft balls. Batsmen played good shots but we were soft in certain overs,” Mr.Pandya said at the post-match presentation ceremony. The MI skipper heaved a huge sigh of relief with a close win, stating that every player’s nerves got tested in the game. “(It was a) very good game. Everyone’s nerves got tested. We spoke that the characters will be checked in this game. But (it is) natural (that) you (would) think you are ahead but IPL has a tendency to show that oppositions can come back and how,” Pandya added. Punjab Kings’ stand-in captain Sam Curran said it was heartening to see youngsters like Ashutosh and Shashank rising to the occasion, despite losing some close matches in the recent past. “Another close one, I think this team likes a close one, but unfortunately another loss. Another incredible knock from the young guy (Ashutosh), but another close loss,” he said. “It’s very tough. We have lost a lot of wickets at the start, the way the younger guys have taken the team so close is heartening.” “They have incredible confidence, you see a guy like Ashutosh having the confidence to play the sweeps and the big hits against pacers, it’s so great to watch them in action,” Curran said. The Englishman said there were a lot of positives to take from such close defeats. “It’s disheartening to lose close games, but there are a lot of positives in this team. We still have the belief in us, we believe we can turn this around, the sun will come up tomorrow and we will hopefully get on a winning run,” Curran said. The player of the match Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled a brilliant spell of 3/21 said it was a much closer game than he anticipated. “(It was a) much closer game than what we thought. (I) want to make an impact early on. In this format, ball swings for two overs, and you want to make use of that,” he said. Bumrah said the T20 format is cruel for bowlers and is tilted in favour of batters. “This format is a little difficult for the bowlers because the batsmanship is going over, plus the time restrictions and the Impact Player rule. What you can do is prepare your best and back yourself,” he said. “Go out there and give your best. I try to relay messages from wherever I am on the field. You don’t want to give too many messages,” Bumrah added.

Image Source : BCCI/IPL Mumbai Indians players against Punjab Kings in the IPL game on April 18, 2024 Mumbai Indians recorded a thrilling nine-run victory over Punjab Kings to register their only third win of the IPL 2024 season on Thursday, April 18. Punjab Kings made a late comeback while chasing a 193-run target but Mumbai avoided a late scare to return to the winning ways at Mullanpur’s Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium. Coming into this game after a heavy loss against Chennai Super Kings, Hardik Pandy-led produced an impressive all-round performance. Suryakumar Yadav smashed 78 runs off 53 balls to help Mumbai post 192 total while batting first and pacers Gerald Coetzee and Jasprit Bumrah took early wickets to stumble Punjab to 14 for 4. But Punjab made a sensational comeback through Shashank Singh’s 41 off 25 balls and Ashutosh Sharma’s valiant 61 off just 28 balls. Mumbai managed to avoid a late scare by defending 12 runs in the last over and jumped to seventh place in the points table.  Meanwhile, Suryakumar’s second fifty of the season put Mumbai on track for a big total but the likes of Hardik Pandya and Tim David failed to finish. Tilak Varma smashed a crucial 34* off 18 balls and Rohit contributed with 36 runs. Harshal Patel took three wickets for 31 and stand-in skipper Sam Curran bagged two for Punjab Kings. ‘Didn’t start well, didn’t finish…’: Punjab Kings’ Sam Curran after another ‘close loss’ | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings’ all-rounder Sam Curran, who led the team in the absence of injured skipper Shikhar Dhawan, blamed the team’s batters for another ‘close loss’ in the IPL, expressing disappointment with their inability to finish games. Shimron Hetmyer kept his clam and scored an unbeaten 27 off 10 balls as Rajasthan Royals beat Punjab Kings by three wickets in a low-scoring thriller to maintain their pole position in the points table. After restricting Punjab to 147/8 in 20 overs, Royals were in trouble when Hetmyer came in after Riyan Parag’s fall and saw Dhruv Jurel being dismissed as well. Under mounting pressure, Hetmyer, who barely got batting time in the season, smashed a four and three sixes, including the winning shot, to get Royals over the line with a ball to spare. IPL: POINTS TABLE | ORANGE CAP | PURPLE CAPDespite competitive performances, Punjab have struggled to convert opportunities into wins, highlighting the need for improved execution in crucial moments.“The wicket was slightly slow, but we didn’t start well with the bat and didn’t finish well in the end. It was a good effort from the lower order, getting (close) to 150 was excellent, the bowling was good, we kept them down, unfortunately another close loss,” Curran said at the post-match interaction.“We stuck to our plans, bowled and fielded well, but I’m confident we’ll bounce back in the next game. Three games is a hard way to fully work out the conditions (at the new venue), but we’ve adapted well, we won the first match and lost two matches by close margins (by 2 runs and 3 wickets), hard to take, but the boys will be lifted by how well we’ve played in the last couple of games,” Curran added.
