THe openers added 210 runs in 17.2 overs. It is the first time that a team has scored more than 200 runs as the opening partnership against Chennai Super Kings. None of the CSK bowlers made an impact against the rampaging Gill and Sudarshan. Dropping of catches and misfields from Chennai Super Kings fielders added salt to the injury. During his course of century knock, Sai Sudarshan completed fastest 1000 IPL runs Interestingly, Gill and Sudarshan scored 100th and 101st centuries in the Indian Premier League. Sudarshan and Gill were dismissed with the score at 213 runs on the board. Of the CSK bowlers, only Shardul Thakur (0 for 25) was the pick of the bowlers. Tushar Deshpande (2 for 33) was the wicket-taker. All the other bowlers went for runs. Earlier, Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and decided to bowl against Gujarat Titans in the 59th match. Currently, CSK are at the fourth place in the table with 12 points. GT has lost seven matches after playing 11 matches. They are at the 10th place in the table. Speaking at the toss, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad confirmed that Rachin Ravindra has replaced Richard Gleeson in the playing eleven. “We will bowl first. Looks a good wicket, to be honest. It’s been a chasing ground, so we will look to chase. Pretty much similar to Chennai. We didn’t like a red solid wicket much. Pretty relaxed. You tend to lose many games in IPL, you have to back everyone and make sure everyone is in a good head space. We had injuries in between, but happy. Rachin comes in for Gleeson,” Gaikwad said. GT captain Shubman Gill said Kartik Tyagi came in the first eleven in place of Joshua Little. “Would have bowled first as well, looks a good wicket. There’s a 1% chance of qualifying, so we are going to try hard for that. The mood is like any other match, we as a team believe in doing the best we can. Will be a good surface to bat on. Will score runs and try to restrict them. Wade comes in for Saha who has a niggle. In order to balance the team combination Kartik Tyagi comes in for Jos Little,” Gill said. Teams Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Shivam Dube, Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (Wk), Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Tushar Deshpande, Simarjeet Singh. Orange Cap in IPL 2024 after PBKS vs CSK, LSG vs KKR: Gaikwad fails to dethrone Kohli; Sunil Narine jumps to 3rd spot

Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday moved closer to sealing their spot in the IPL 2024 playoffs after an emphatic 98-run win against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. KKR bowlers put on a clinical show after Sunil Narine’s stunning knock of 81 off just 39 balls, laced with six boundaries and seven maximums as the visitors roared to the top of the points table, while the home team dropped out of the top four. Sunil Narine (right) makes significant move in Ornage Cap table In the first match on Sunday, at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Ravindra Jadeja helped Chennai Super Kings keep their playoff hope alive with his all-round brilliance against Punjab Kings. Left-hander Jadeja top-scored with 43 off 26 balls to guide Chennai to 167-9 after being invited to bat first in Punjab’s adopted home ground of Dharamsala. Jadeja then returned figures of 3-20 from his four overs of left-arm spin to help restrict Punjab to 139-9 for Chennai’s sixth win in 11 matches as they climbed to third in the table. The stellar performance from the veteran India cricketer also comes as a welcome sign ahead of the T20 World Cup in June in the West Indies and the United States. 'Hindi/English': Ruturaj Gaikwad gets a hilarious toss suggestion from Wasim Jaffer

‘Hindi/English’: Ruturaj Gaikwad gets a hilarious toss suggestion from Wasim Jaffer

Former India cricketer-turned commentator Wasim Jaffer has jokingly suggested CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to opt for alternative toss methods to improve his record in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024. Notably, the 27-year-old has won just one toss in the ongoing season out of 11 matches during the fifth fixture against KKR. Amid his unlucky run with the toss, Jaffer has suggested Gaikwad use the famous gully cricket method of using a tobacco brand’s packet for the toss and choose between Hindi or English languages printed on either side. Notably, Gaikwad lost fifth consecutive toss of the season during Match 53 against PBKS at HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala which prompted a hilarious response from Jaffer. Gaikwad’s toss form may not have been the best this season but his batting form is second to none in the ongoing edition as he’s the second highest run scorer of the season so far. The right-handed batter has 509 runs to his name from ten innings at an average of 63.62 and a strike rate of 146.68 with one hundred and four fifties to his name. The opening batter scored second hundred of his IPL career during Match 39 against LSG scoring a phenomenal 108* (60) with the help of 12 fours and three sixes. He further scored a magnificent 98 (54) against SRH during Match 46 but agonizingly failed to score his second successive hundred. CSK yet to qualify for playoffs On the captaincy front, the Pune-born cricketer started his season well leading the defending champions to back-to-back victories in their first two games. He further led his side to make a comeback after two losses by registering consecutive wins against KKR and MI. However, CSK’s campaign hasn’t been going well after the first six games as they could only win one out of their last four matches. They’re precariously poised on the fifth spot on the points table with five wins from ten matches having ten points to their name. They need to win three out of their last of four matches for smooth qualification to the playoffs. Published By: Saurabh Kumar Published On: May 5, 2024

Ruturaj Gaikwad equals all-time unwanted captaincy record in IPL after losing toss in PBKS vs CSK clash – India TV

Image Source : BCCI/IPL Sam Curran and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has levelled an all-time unwanted captaincy record in the history of the Indian Premier League during the toss ceremony in the Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings clash at HPCA Dharamsala. Gaikwad’s CSK were asked to bat first after PBKS skipper Sam Curran won the toss in the first match of the season at the picturesque venue. While CSK were forced to make an unforced change to their Playing XI due to the unavailability of Mustafizur Rahman, Gaikwad has equalled an unwanted record in the history of the tournament. His love affair with losing the tosses has continued even in the game against PBKS. Gaikwad has now equalled the record of most tosses lost in the first 11 matches of an IPL.  The toss-loss against PBKS was the tenth instance of Gaikwad losing the flip-of-the-coin in the ongoing season of the tournament. He levelled the record earlier held by only Sanju Samson, who lost 10 tosses as well in Rajasthan Royals’ first 10 games of the season. Most tosses lost in the first 11 games of an IPL season 10 – RR in 2022 10 – CSK in 2024 9 – MI in 2011 9 – DC in 2013 Notably after winning the toss against CSK, Curran wanted to chase to have a better look at the surface. “We’re going to bowl. Day game, try and see how it plays and chase it down. We’ve got the same team. We’ve had two really good wins with the same team. Conditions should be fairly even throughout, it’s about batting, bowling and fielding well,” Curran, who is the stand-in skipper in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, said at the toss. “We’ve just stuck to our process and doing little things right. We don’t look at the track record of the opposition, we focus on ourselves and see what we can do right. This season there have been a lot of injuries, flus and forced changes so we’ve had to tinker with our team. I’d say losing 10 tosses but winning 5 games is a positive. Santner comes in place of Fizz,” Gaikwad said after losing yet another toss.

Chennai have lost three of their last four games, injury to Deepak Chahar will not help, Mustafizur Rahman has already left and the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is yet to win a toss. In Dharamsala however, the toss won’t matter much, especially since it’s a day game and a fresh wicket with small boundaries is likely to help the batters across the 40 overs. Punjab still have the destiny in their own hands and they have to believe that they can make a difference, given the table fluctuations so much so that, if they win on Sunday, three teams will be with 10 points in 11 games. Delhi already have played 11 matches with five wins and six losses and both Punjab and Chennai will be on the same level as the Rishabh Pant-led side. IPL 2024: Must-win game for Chennai Super Kings against Punjab Kings | Cricket News

Pacers Pathirana, Deshpande back as Ruturaj’s boys eye revenge against PBKSChennai Super Kings have been far from comfortable playing away from home this season. The reigning champions have won just one of their four matches on the road so far and were outplayed by the opposition in each of the three losses. With time not on their side and the team playing catch-up in the intense playoff race, Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK will have to improve their away record, starting with the clash against Punjab Kings in Dharamshala on Sunday.IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLESuper Kings (10 points from 10 matches) find themselves in must-win territory as they are two points behind Sunrisers Hyderabad (12 points from 10 matches), who occupy the fourth and final knockout spot.A slip-up against Punjab – four days after going down to the same opposition in Chennai – could mean that top-four qualification may no longer be in their hands.Moving into the most crucial phase of the league stage, Ruturaj’s form is a huge positive for CSK. The right-handed opener is on a dream run with five 50-plus scores in his last six outings. While Ruturaj is in glorious touch, he can still improve in certain areas – maintaining consistency away from home, making full use of the Powerplay at a time when his opening partner Ajinkya Rahane is struggling for runs. The fact that the pitches at the HPCA Stadium provide good assistance to the batters should please Ruturaj and Co. After being dominated by spinners Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar, the middle-order batters, especially Shivam Dube, will be eager to exact revenge.CSK are set to be bolstered by the availability of pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande, but will be without the services of Deepak Chahar. While Pathirana and Deshpande missed the last game with a niggle and flu respectively, Deepak limped off the field with a groin injury. “Deepak has pulled up with a problem in his leg and is not with us. The Sri Lankan boys (Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana) had to go to get their visas sorted. They did not train on Saturday. Once we see how the conditions are and the balance of the team, we will know (if they play). Tushar seems fine right now,” said CSK bowling consultant Eric Simons.Punjab, who are on a two-match winning streak, will look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. The change of home venue from Mullanpur to Dharamshala could come as a welcome boost as the free-stroking PBKS batters may be better-suited to the HPCA Stadium pitch.

‘He’s still in his 20s…’: Ruturaj Gaikwad praises ‘young’ CSK wicketkeeper MS Dhoni | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: It’s hard not be a fan of MS Dhoni, especially if you play in the same team and add to that, if you have succeeded the legend as captain of a team that he led to as many as five IPL titles.A day after Chennai Super Kings went down to Punjab Kings by 7 wickets, the host broadcaster shared a video of CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad at a talk show answering a question on MS Dhoni.IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLE“How did the young wicket-keeper perform in your opinion?” asks the anchor.Gaikwad replies with a smile, “He did quite well, I feel he should be in the Indian team now, he’s doing really well, he played some good shots. The reason why I said young was actually the amount of practice he was doing pre-season, the amount of hard work he was putting in and I think he was playing the best I’ve ever seen since the last five or six years. So I really feel he’s in his prime twenties. He is playing that kind of cricket right now. Definitely he’s still quite young and many more years to come for him to play.” Dhoni has the third best strike rate this IPL season. He has scored 110 runs from 10 matches at a strike rate of 229.17 and an average of 110.00.In the match against Punjab on Wednesday, Dhoni was dismissed for the first time in this IPL edition when he was run out after scoring a 11-ball 14.CSK are at the fourth spot in the points table with five victories and five defeats, and play their next game against Punjab again on Sunday in Dharamsala.

IPL 2024: Stephen Fleming hoping for a positive report from CSK medical team on Deepak Chahar | Cricket News

IPL 2024: Stephen Fleming hoping for a positive report from CSK medical team on Deepak Chahar | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Although seamer Deepak Chahar‘s most recent injury “doesn’t look good,” Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming expressed optimism for a positive report from the team’s medical staff ahead of the ongoing IPL’s business phase.Fleming did not provide any information regarding Chahar’s recent injury, but in just the second ball of the Punjab Kings’ chase in Chennai on Wednesday night, the 31-year-old seamer was seen pulling off his run-up.IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLEAfter speaking with the physiotherapist and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chahar appeared to be suffering from a hamstring injury. He did not bowl during the remainder of the match.Injuries have plagued Chahar’s career in the past few years, depriving him a berth on the Indian squad.“Yeah, the travelogue is pretty busy. There’s a lot of ins and outs. So, Deepak Chahar doesn’t look good,” said Fleming during the post-match presser.“The initial feeling wasn’t great. So, I’m hoping for a more positive report when the physio and the doctor have a look.”Due to Chahar’s injury, Gaikwad was compelled to insert Shivam Dube, who has mostly been employed as a batter this season, for one over. However, Fleming acknowledged that Dube is not fit for the role in the IPL due to the Impact Player rule after Dube went for 14 in the one over he bowled. Dube will have his opportunity under the right circumstances.“He (Dube) is ready to bowl and is working hard on it. He will play a role in the right conditions, and with the Impact Player rule, we have players who can fit the role better. Currently, his necessity to bowl is pretty much small,” the coach said.CSK suffered a seven-wicket defeat to PBKS, their second loss at home this season, managing a meagre 162 for 7, which was comfortably chased down with 13 balls to spare.Talking about the demanding wicket at Chepauk, Fleming said, “It’s difficult, and we have spoken on the unpredictability of the wickets here before. Batting first makes it difficult for us to judge as to what a good competitive score is.“We had a couple of 200s (before), which was in our minds today. But, the wicket was very sticky.“We also had a good start in the (first) six overs before things became difficult. We also tried a few lefties in the form of Dube and (Ravindra) Jadeja but we just couldn’t get anything through the middle. They bowled really well, they got good purchase and held onto it. We just got stifled through the middle, which prevented us from getting a score of 180,” he said. With a low score to defend, Fleming was impressed with the commitment and performance shown by English pacer Richard Gleeson, who made his debut last night.“Richard Gleeson was good, and it was a positive. Losing Fizz (Mustafizur Rahman) is disappointing.“Tushar (Deshpande) has a bit of flu going around as well. So, we’ve had to make a few changes, which is unusual. Again, that’s part of it, and we have got the resources,” he said.“Just they haven’t had the game time to be really comfortable with their roles and us to be comfortable with a game plan, which we’re struggling a little.”Ajinkya Rahane, the experienced opener, reached double figures despite struggling in the last four games, although he was only able to get a score of 29 off of 24 balls.“I thought he (Rahane) was good today. He’s been probably a bit too aggressive in what he wants to do,” Fleming observed.“Keep in mind, we’re batting on wickets here that we don’t know how they are gonna play. So, we got to take a bit of a pause to see what a good score is. If you are 3 for 30, the game is pretty much over.“His (Rahane) hitting that was so good last year, is more crisp. It’s not for lack of intent. He has doubled up on intent. We’re fine with Jinks and the role he plays.” (With PTI inputs)

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s half-century on Wednesday saw him move to pole position in the IPL 2024 Orange Cap race, overtaking Virat Kohli. The Chennai Super Kings captain smacked 62 runs off 48 balls, packed with five fours and two sixes. He leads the Orange Cap race with 509 runs in 10 matches, at a strike rate of 146.68. He has also bagged a ton and four half-centuries. Shubman Gill has been named in the reserves list and Ruturaj Gaikwad has missed out totally.(PTI) Among Indian openers, he has more runs than Shubman Gill (320), Rohit Sharma (315) and Yashasvi Jaiswal. But it looks like your form in IPL doesn’t really count as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decided to ignore Gaikwad for Rohit and Jaiswal in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Meanwhile, they named Gill in the reserves. Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Download Now! Speaking on his Youtube channel, India legend Krishnamachari Srikkanth lashed out at the BCCI for their questionable decision. He pointed out Gill’s poor form and also accused the selection committee of ‘favoritism’. “Shubman Gill is totally out of form, but why he’s selected in the team. There’s no doubt that Ruturaj Gaikwad deserves a place. He scored more than 500 runs in 17 innings. Also he scored a century against Australia. Shubman Gill is selectors’ delight. He gets chance even if he fails. He finds place even if he fails in Test, ODIs and T20s.There’s too much of favoritism in selection. The team selection is all about favoritism,” he said. Another notable exclusion has been KL Rahul, who was India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter at the 2023 ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer has also missed out on a spot. Shivam Dube’s swashbuckling form with the bat this year has also seen him get selected for the tournament. Riyan Parag has been ignored, but his Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been included in the squad. Gaikwad will be lamenting on missing out on a ticket to the ICC showpiece event. The opener has shown immense maturity after MS Dhoni handed over CSK’s captaincy to him on the eve of IPL 2024.
