RCB will win IPL 2025 and Virat Kohli will be Player of the Match: Shane Watson

Legendary Australia cricketer Shane Watson has backed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to win Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) and Virat Kohli to win Player of the Match. RCB finished the league stage of the tournament on second position with nine wins from 14 matches, having 19 points to their name. It was the first time that the Bengaluru-based franchise finished in top two after nine years. As a result, they have a golden chance to win the tournament and end their 18-year drought of an IPL trophy. Shane Watson has also backed RCB to win the trophy and Virat Kohli to win the Player of the Match award in the final. He also mentioned how the return of Josh Hazlewood for the playoffs is a major boost for the side. “The winner of IPL 2025, and I’ve been thinking long and hard about it, is RCB. And the Man of the Match for me is Virat Kohli, the great man. And here’s the reason why. I just get a feeling that this is the time for RCB. They have had a few blips in the back end of the tournament, but with Josh Hazlewood coming back for the Playoffs, I get a feeling this is the year,” Watson said in a video shared on his X handle. Back in 2016, during the final of the IPL played between RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Watson didn’t have a memorable game. He first leaked 61 runs in four overs and later got dismissed for 11 (9) as RCB lost the match by eight runs. The Australian all-rounder has apologised to RCB fans time and again for his dismal show in the final which deprived them of their maiden title victory. Meanwhile, Hazlewood missed the last two games for RCB as he was nursing a shoulder issue and returned late from Australia. However, his return just ahead of the playoffs has provided a major boost for Bengaluru. The Rajat Patidar-led side will hope that the Australian seamer continues his rich form in the season and finally ends their title drought. Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! PBKS vs RCB Match Prediction & Analysis It’s playoff time in IPL 2025, and the first big clash is set—Punjab Kings (PKBS) take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1 this Thursday at Mullanpur.  Both teams finished at the top of the table in the group stage, and the winner here will head straight to the final on June 3. The losing side won’t be out just yet—they’ll go on to play the Eliminator winner in Qualifier 2 at Ahmedabad, with a second chance to reach the final. The final stretch of IPL 2025 is shaping up to be intense. TEAMS PREVIEW Punjab Kings Preview Punjab Kings have been steady all season, grinding out nine wins from 14 matches to finish on top of the standoings. This is their best run since 2014, the last time they reached the finals. Fans will be hoping they can finally take it all the way this time. Punjab have got the pieces to make that happen, and they’ve used them well throughout the tournament. Their batting unit runs deep, and different players have stepped up when needed. Prabhsimran Singh (499 runs in 14 innings) and Priyansh Arya (424 runs in 14 innings) have been a reliable opening pair, setting the tone early. Punjab will be counting on at least one of them to get going again. Shreyas Iyer has held the middle together with poise, scoring 514 runs from 14 matches at a strike rate of 172. He’s been steady when things get tense and will be central to their plans again. Nehal Wadhera hasn’t put up huge scores, but his quickfire knocks at a strike rate around 153 have made a difference in tight spots. Marcus Stoinis and Josh Inglis have been handy contributors too. Stoinis has been used at the back end to finish things off, while Inglis has slotted in at number three or four, playing with urgency. His 73 off 42 against Mumbai was a standout and showed his ability to turn the momentum of a game quickly. Shashank Singh has also stood up late in matches, keeping calm under pressure and closing out a few tough games. One major setback is the absence of Marco Jansen, who won’t be around for the playoffs due to national commitments. That puts the spotlight on Kyle Jamieson. He’s had issues with conceding too many runs, but now he’ll have to step up and take more control. Yuzvendra Chahal could be back after missing the last two games with a minor injury. His return would bring experience and the ability to break partnerships when it matters most. If Chahal gets into rhythm alongside Arshdeep and Harpreet Brar, Punjab will have a real chance to punch through in Qualifier 1. Royal Challengers Bengaluru Preview RCB have looked terrific all season and wrapped up their group stage with a statement win—chasing down 228 against Lucknow Super Giants, the third-biggest chase ever pulled off in the IPL. That win helped them secure a top-two finish, which will now give them two shots to reach the final. Their batting and bowling units have both held up well. Virat Kohli has done the heavy lifting with the bat, scoring 602 runs in 14 innings at an average of 60.20 and a strike rate of 148. He’s notched up eight fifties, including one in the last game, and continues to look dependable. Phil Salt hasn’t stacked up huge scores, but he gets off the blocks fast and usually gives the innings early momentum. Skipper Rajat Patidar, dealing with fitness issues in recent games, has still managed 271 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 140.41, contributing in key moments. RCB have also had fresh faces step up, with Mayank Agarawal and Jitesh Sharma turning heads recently. Mayank has chipped in with some quickfire cameos to keep things ticking in the middle-order, while Jitesh came through big time in the last match against LSG, hammering 85* off 33 balls to seal that mammoth chase. Down the order, they’ll be leaning on Romario Shepherd and Tim David for power late in the innings. David, expected to return for the playoffs after a short injury layoff, could be critical in the final stretch. RCB are also bolstered by the return of Josh Hazlewood, who’s been the most dependable name with the ball this season—snagging 18 wickets in 10 games. Add in the experience of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya, and there’s depth in the attack. The concern will be around Yash Dayal and Suyash Sharma, who’ve been on the receiving end too often and may be vulnerable under pressure. Weather Conditions The surface at Mullanpur is well-suited for T20 cricket. Batters who get their eye in early should be able to put up a good score. Seamers could get some early swing with the new ball, while spinners might find the pitch helpful once the powerplay is done. Chandigarh’s forecast points to a dry, hot day with zero threat of rain. That means we’re in for a complete game. PBKS vs RCB Pitch Report The average score batting first at Mullanpur in the IPL is 170. Punjab Kings hold the top score at this venue so far—219 for 6 against Chennai Super Kings earlier in the season. The surface has generally offered a lot to batters, so another high-scoring match is likely. Both teams will be eyeing 210 as a total that gives them breathing room. Toss: To Bat Three of the four matches played at…

A win boosted Bengaluru’s chances of making the playoff significantly but Punjab Kings became the second team after Mumbai Indians to suffer an early elimination. Virat Kohli produced a memorable knock by smashing 92 runs off just 47 balls as Bengaluru posted a 241/7, their third-highest total in IPL, while batting first at Dharamsala’s HPCA Stadium. Then spinners Karn Sharma and Swapnil Singh claimed early wickets to bowl out Punjab to an 181 total in 17 overs. Both teams needed two points to remain in contention for the playoff qualification. Punjab recalled Liam Livingstone in the place of the South African pacer Kagiso Rabada while the speedster Lockie Ferguson replaced Glenn Maxwell for Bengaluru. After being forced out to bat first, in-form Virat Kohli continued his red-hot form with an aggressive approach from the beginning. Bengaluru lost skipper Faf du Plessis and batting all-rounder Will Jacks early in the powerplay but Kohli kept the runs flowing a stunning batting. Kohli and Rajat Patidar added 76 runs for the third wicket with the latter recording his fourth fifty of the season in just 21 balls. Kohli also introduced his sixth fifty in the IPL 2024 in 32 balls but missed out on his century by just eight runs. He top-scored with 92 runs off just 47 balls with the help of seven fours and six sixes to display his remarkable big-hitting skills again. Cameron Green contributed with 46 runs and Dinesh Karthik played a quick cameo as Bengaluru posted a huge total in a must-win game. Harshal Patel took three wickets for 47 and the debutant pacer Vidwath Kaverappa picked two for Punjab Kings. Chasing a record tough target, Punjab Kings lost opener Prabhsimran Singh in the very first over off Swapnil Singh’s delivery. Rilee Rossouw and Jonny Bairstow then quickly added 65 runs for the second wicket to keep  Punjab alive in the chase. Rossouw produced his first fifty of the season in just 21 balls but was dismissed by Karn Sharma after scoring 61 off 27 balls. Punjab lost both settled Rossouw and Bairstow in quick succession to spin and then were never able to make a comeback. Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru T20 Match Prediction & Betting Tips, IPL 2024 Punjab Kings take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Thursday evening in Match 58 of the 2024 Indian Premier League. Both sides have won four of their 11 games and are four points from the top four places with three to go. Read on as we preview this match. The fixture gets underway at 19:30 local time at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala on May 9th. After beating Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings were unable to make it three wins in a row when they lost the return fixture with CSK on Sunday. However, they have players in strong form with bat and ball and they will back themselves to beat RCB. RCB got another win on Saturday when they beat the struggling Gujarat Titans and there is plenty of belief across their side at the moment. That said, they almost threw away a strong position in that match and they will need to be careful not to give Punjab Kings a way back in during this game. PBKS vs RCB Match Toss PredictionOf the 12 IPL matches played at this venue, seven have been won by team batting first. In this clash at the HPCA Stadium, with CSK winning the last fixture here batting first, we predict both skippers will choose to bat if they win the toss. PBKS vs RCB Pitch ReportThe average score batting first at the HPCA Stadium is 179 and we saw CSK post 167/9 earlier this month. We expect the pitch to be quicker in this clash throughout the game with runs coming a little easier than in Match 53. A par score for the team batting first is likely to be over 185. Dharamsala Weather ReportThe forecast is for clear skies from start to finish on Thursday evening with the temperature in the mid-twenties. We do not expect the temperature to drop below 22 degrees and there is no danger of rain interrupting.
