Modi-Trump call: India sets record straight on ceasefire

ENG vs IND: No Jacob Bethell, Ollie Pope at No.3 as England name playing XI for 1st Test

There is no place for Jacob Bethell in the playing XI as England announced their lineup for the first Test against India at Headingley on Wednesday, June 18. Ollie Pope has fended off competition from Bethell to claim the No.3 spot for the match which will start from Friday, June 20. Bethell made a strong case to seal the spot during England’s tour of New Zealand last year with three fifties, but Pope’s recent 171 against Zimbabwe in the one-off Test seems to have swayed things in his favour. England’s managing director of cricket, Rob Key had hinted that it will be a call that won’t affect the futures of both players. Apart from this, Chris Woakes will also make his return to the Test team for the first time since December. Brydon Carse, who impressed during the tour of New Zealand, will be playing his first Test on English soil. Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir rounds off the bowling attack for England as captain Ben Stokes will be expected to pitch in with a few overs. “England Men have confirmed their XI for the Rothesay first Test against India at Headingley starting on Friday.” “Warwickshire all-rounder Chris Woakes returns to the side for the first time since December. Durham seamer Brydon Carse will play his first Test on home soil, having featured in his previous five Tests in Pakistan and New Zealand,” read the statement from ECB. IND vs ENG: What is it like facing Jasprit Bumrah? Ollie Pope reminisces toe-crushing yorker | Cricket News

Ollie Pope was cleaned up by Jasprit Bumrah in Vishakhapatnam in 2024. (File) Jasprit Bumrah is more than just a unique run-up — he’s deceptive, intelligent, and metronomically accurate. He not only delivers a lethal bouncer but also possesses a devastating yorker.Ollie Pope experienced the full force of Bumrah’s brilliance during the Visakhapatnam Test last year. A photo from that moment — with Pope off balance, desperately trying to jam down on the delivery, and just one stump left standing — perfectly captured Bumrah’s magic. In an interview with TalkSport Cricket, England’s vice-captain Pope opened up about what it’s like to face Bumrah.“Yeah, it’s a challenge,” he said. “I think I’ve played him in probably three different series now, and you’re constantly trying to find ways to put him under some pressure.”When asked why English batters don’t just look to survive his spell, Pope explained:“I mean, he can bowl 20 overs in a day — that’s a lot. So, the way we talk about cricket is, you want to absorb pressure when needed, and then, if necessary, try to put a guy under a little bit of pressure.”“But that doesn’t mean trying to smash him to the boundary. It could just be rotating strike. If he’s bowling a good spell, I’m thinking, ‘Right, how can I get off strike?’ And my partner’s thinking the same — so he doesn’t get six balls at you in a row and use all his skills. He’s a highly skilled bowler, one of the best in the world, if not the best.”“There’s no hiding behind that. But I’m sure everyone has different methods to try and nullify his main threats, and figure out their scoring areas. It’s really about keeping it as simple as possible.”Former England pacer Stuart Broad also admitted on a podcast with Jos Buttler that the series outcome could hinge on Bumrah’s fitness — and that England would prefer if he didn’t play all five Tests. For now, Bumrah has said he’s targeting three Tests, but that decision may change based on workload management. The first Test of the five-match series begins on June 20 in Leeds.

Shubman Gill, their new captain, is a fantastic player. They will miss the aura of Virat Kohli standing at slips and chirping away.“But they have got some good talent, so they will feel confident. But our players are ready for it.”India’s last Test series victory in England dates back to 2007, with subsequent losses in 2011, 2014 and 2018, while the 2021-22 series concluded in a draw. Poll How significant is the absence of Virat Kohli for India in this series? “It’s a great time for us to play India”Pope highlighted the significance of the upcoming India series for England, describing it as crucial preparation ahead of the Ashes later this year. ‘Nitish Kumar is a guy who can bowl that magic ball’: India bowling coach Morne Morkel “It’s a great time for us to play India. Last summer, we had the West Indies and Sri Lanka, but with India coming over, the level of quality that they will bring is a great way for us to focus on that and not look too far ahead.“So yeah, for us, it’s the perfect time to play India, and then once the Ashes come around, it will be exciting.”
