‘Mumbai Indians ki kahani khatam’: What went wrong for five-time IPL champions | Cricket News

Five-time champions Mumbai Indians are all but out of the race to IPL 2024 playoffs. Going through one of their worst seasons in IPL history, Hardik Pandya & Co. faced their eighth defeat in 11 matches, losing to Kolkata Knight Riders by 24 runs on their home ground, Wankhede Stadium, on Friday.IPL STANDINGS: Points Table | Orange Cap | Purple Cap The defeat, which was MI’s first against KKR at the Wankhede in 12 years, once again brought Hardik ‘s captaincy in focus. “This was such a good team on paper but was not managed well. The questions that were being raised about Hardik Pandya’s captaincy were absolutely correct,” said former India pacer Irfan Pathan, analysing the game in a video on social media. KKR put up 169 on the board, thanks to a half-century by Venkatesh Iyer (70 off 52 balls) and an equally crucial 31-ball 42 by Manish Pandey, despite MI having the visitors on the ropes at 57/5 in just the seventh over.WATCH VIDEO “When you had KKR’s five wickets for just 57 runs, there was no need to give Naman Dhir three overs in a row. You should have got your main bowlers on, but you had your sixth bowler deliver three overs. That allowed Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey to put a partnership together….Where you could have bowled KKR out for 150, they went on to make 170, and that turned out to be the difference,” added Pathan, raising questions on captain Hardik’s decisions on the field. Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in IPL history, finally did justice to his price tag with match-winning figures of 4/33 as Mumbai folded up for 145 in 18.5 overs despite Suryakumar Yadav’s 35-ball 56. Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine and Andre Russell took two wickets each. “KKR now looks like a ‘khatarnak’ (dangerous) team after Mitchell Starc’s return to form. They had just one weak link in fast bowling, which was Mitchell Starc’s bowling. The way he bowled to Tim David must be appreciated,” analysed Irfan. The win took KKR to No. 2 on the points table with seven wins in 10 matches. Coming back to MI captaincy, which had changed hands from Rohit Sharma to Hardik before the start of this season, Irfan said MI is not playing as a unit under Hardik’s captaincy. “In cricket, captaincy has a huge effect and it’s very important to manage, which did not happen. Mumbai Indians isn’t looking like a team that is playing as a unit, and this aspect needs to be looked at going forward for Mumbai Indians. Players need to respect the captain and also accept him appreciably, this is very important. That, I think, could not be seen on the field,” the former cricketer cum commentator said. “Whatever the reason is, they have to think about it and improve.”

IPL-17: MI vs KKR | Venkatesh and Pandey’s partnership proves the difference as Knight Riders edge Mumbai Indians

Dominate the middle overs and win the match. That seems to be the flavour of the Indian Premier League this season. The same was on display at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday as the Kolkata Knight Riders clinched a convincing win despite having its back to the wall early on in the game. As a result, in a game influenced heavily by bowling units with all 20 wickets falling on the night, it was the 83-run association between Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey (Impact Player) in the middle overs of the first innings that turned out to be the difference between Knight Riders and host Mumbai Indians. Had it not been for the duo’s partnership, Knight Riders – reeling at 57 for five – would have struggled to put on the 169 runs it did before being bowled out in the last over. Suryakumar Yadav then tried his best to take a cue from Venkatesh but thanks to KKR’s spin duo of Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine controlling the middle overs, Suryakumar perished even before MI got close to the finish line. As a result, KKR emerged as a clear second in the standings while MI’s campaign is all but over after its eighth loss of the season. Venkatesh carried on from his sterling hundred at the same venue last season to notch up his fourth fifty-plus score in five outings against MI. He found an ally in veteran Pandey who kept the scoreboard flowing. In the nine-over period from the seventh till the 15th over, KKR added 75 runs for the loss of Rinku Singh, who top-edged back to Piyush Chawla off the first ball after the PowerPlay. MI lost three wickets while adding 73 runs in the same period. The additional wickets proved to be the difference. Once Suryakumar’s skier off Andre Russell was pouched by Phil Salt, the game was all but over. Just like Nuwan Thushara in the PowerPlay and Jasprit Bumrah at the death in the first essay, Mitchell Starc targeted the stumps to finish the game off in a hurry. Gautam Gambhir Names Only Batsman He Has “Feared”. It’s Not Gayle, De Villiers, Dhoni Or Kohli

As Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) look to take on Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the mentor of the 2-time champions, Gautam Gambhir, opened up on his respect for Rohit Sharma. While Gambhir has come up against some of the finest batters in the game during his active days as a cricketer, especially as the KKR skipper, there is no batter he has “feared” the most than Rohit Sharma. In a candid chat with the IPL broadcaster, Gambhir revealed that he often had to come up with multiple plans to stop Rohit from scoring runs. Gambhir, during his cricketing career, had to plan for marquee batters like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, etc. But, it’s Rohit against whom he had the most difficult times. “The only batsman that I’ve feared is Rohit Sharma. The only batter who has given me sleepless nights… No Chris Gayle, no AB de Villiers, only Rohit. I always knew I had to have a Plan A, a Plan B and probably a Plan C as well, because if Rohit is in, I don’t think anything can control him,” Gambhir told Star Sports. Game recognises game “The only batsman I feared in IPL was @ImRo45“, @GautamGambhir praises the Indian captain’s batting prowess! Will he lead #TeamIndia to glory in the #T20WorldCup2024? | #MIvKKR | TODAY, 6:30 PM | #IPLOnStar pic.twitter.com/eEav5GbKG5 — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) May 3, 2024 “I’ve never planned for any other batter in the IPL except Rohit Sharma. There has been times where I had seen visuals and I said, ‘Fair enough. Plan A is fine’. But for Rohit, one night before I used to think, if this doesn’t work I have to get the other plan,” he further added. In IPL 2024, Sunil Narine has emerged as a consistent performer for KKR, both with the bat and the ball. While admitting that Narine vs Rohit is a battle that he has his eyes on, Gambhir also asserted that he needs more than just the 4 overs from the West Indian to keep Rohit in check. “If Sunil bowls his four over, then who is going to bowl the next 16? And if I finish off Sunil early and Rohit is there, he can hit 30 off one over. Probably, he was the only batter I feared as a captain,” he added. Topics mentioned in this article

MI Pacer Jasprit Bumrah Wins Hearts With His Adorable Gesture For A Young Fan. Watch

Mumbai Indians (MI) and India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah gave a young fan a memory worth cherishing for a lifetime at the Ekana Stadium during the clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the official handle of MI posted a video of Bumrah giving out his prestigious Purple Cap, an honour given to the leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to a young fan. Not just that, Bumrah also gave him his autograph. That kid now has a core memory for life ????????#MumbaiMeriJaan #MumbaiIndians #LSGvMI | @Jaspritbumrah93 pic.twitter.com/CcS1tdjYzB — Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) May 1, 2024 The fan was clearly ecstatic beyond words to have received Bumrah’s prized possession and an autograph from one of the best in the world, as he was seen running around in the stands with expressions of joy on his face. Indeed, the fan got a “core memory” that he would remember forever. “That kid now has a core memory for life #MumbaiMeriJaan #MumbaiIndians #LSGvMI | @Jaspritbumrah93,” tweeted MI. Bumrah is the leading wicket-taker this season so far, with 14 scalps in 10 games at an average of 18.28 and an economy rate of 6.40. His best figures are 5/21. However, his rich bowling form has not helped his team, as they are sitting at the ninth spot in the points table with three wins and seven losses. Coming to the match, LSG won the toss and opted to field first. Mumbai Indians could not get going from the start, losing four wickets for 27 runs within the powerplay itself. Nehal Wadhera (46 in 41 balls, with four boundaries and two sixes), Ishan Kishan (32 in 36 balls, with three fours) and Tim David (35* in 18 balls, with three fours and a six) tried their best, but could take their side to just 144/7 in their 20 overs. Mohsin Khan (2/36) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia, while Marcus Stoinis, Mayank Yadav, Naveen ul Haq and Stoinis got a wicket each. In the run-chase of 145 runs, LSG also faced a hard challenge from MI bowlers and lost wickets at regular intervals. Stoinis’ knock of 62 in 45 balls, with seven fours and two sixes proved to be just enough to take LSG to a four-wicket win with four balls and four wickets left. Stoinis took home the ‘Player of the Match’ award. LSG is at the third spot with six wins and four losses, giving them 12 points. IPL-17 | Kolkata Knight Riders look to iron out flaws against off-colour Mumbai Indians

IPL-17 | Kolkata Knight Riders look to iron out flaws against off-colour Mumbai Indians

Kolkata Knight Riders will look to iron out their flaws and get the better of a mis-firing Mumbai Indians when the two teams, placed on the opposite ends of IPL points table spectrum, clash here on Friday. With six wins in nine games giving them 12 points and the second position in the IPL points table, a berth in the playoffs looks within the grasp of two-time winners KKR. But the Shreyas Iyer-led side will have to find consistency across departments and avoid any slip-ups in order to make it to the final four. Each of their three losses have come in the last six games for KKR, who were at the receiving end of a record run chase by Punjab Kings but did well to bounce back with a seven-wicket thrashing of Delhi Capitals. With the bat, KKR’s requisite firepower in the ranks entwined with an ultra-aggressive approach has delivered the goods more often than not but it is their bowling which needs improvement. Mitchell Starc has given nearly 12 runs an over while managing a mere seven wickets in eight outings. On flat, batting-friendly pitches, the lanky Australian’s lack of control has also been exploited well by zealous batters. Harshit Rana is among those with most wickets (11) for KKR this season but the right-arm seamer will serve a one-match ban for his animated celebrations after dismissing DC’s Abhishek Porel. Vaibhav Arora’s nine scalps in five games make him KKR’s best bet with the ball. A small Wankhede Stadium with a batting-friendly wicket tends to encourage scores in excess of 200 and the team would be mindful of that. Spotlight will also be on Rinku Singh, whose exclusion from India’s main squad for the T20 World Cup, has triggered an outpouring of sympathy for the 26-year-old. The power-hitter has not got enough game time this season which probably tilted the scales against him. For Mumbai Indians, the race to the IPL playoffs seems lost even though the five-time winners have five more games to play. Even if Mumbai Indians win each of these, they can only get to 16 points and somewhere in the middle of the points table — not necessarily challenging those who have been consistently good. Jasprit Bumrah (14 wickets) and Gerald Coetzee (13) have been MI’s best bets with the ball but despite their impressive showing, the batters’ collective failure has resulted in the team’s underwhelming season. Tilak Varma has been MI’s best batter with 343 runs, including three fifties this IPL, but his performances have not been enough to hide the failings of others. Ishan Kishan has struck the ball well but severely lacks consistency at the top and losing wickets in heaps in the powerplay has been one of MI’s biggest woes in this season. India skipper Rohit Sharma’s (315 runs at strike rate of 158.29) selfless approach with the bat has not given him big scores consistently but his form will be in focus given the T20 World Cup is now just one month away. All eyes will also be on Suryakumar Yadav who has two fifties in seven IPL games this season, but it is not the consistency which is expected from the batter of his calibre. Mumbai Indians’ under-fire skipper Hardik Pandya has neither dazzled with the ball nor the bat after a long injury lay-off. but the fact that he finds himself in the Indian side as vice-captain for the World Cup should motivate him to turn things around. Teams (from) Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya (c), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Dewald Brevis, Jasprit Bumrah, Piyush Chawla, Gerald Coetzee, Tim David, Shreyas Gopal, Ishan Kishan (wk), Anshul Kamboj, Kumar Kartikeya, Akash Madhwal, Kwena Maphaka, Mohammad Nabi, Shams Mulani, Naman Dhir, Shivalik Sharma, Romario Shepherd, Arjun Tendulkar, Nuwan Thushara, Tilak Varma, Harvik Desai (wk), Nehal Wadhera, Luke Wood. Hardik Pandya blames top-order collapse for defeat against Lucknow Super Giants | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: As Mumbai Indians succumbed to their seventh defeat of the season, this time against Lucknow Super Giants, skipper Hardik Pandya said loss of early wickets led to their down fall at the Ekana. After being put in to bat by KL Rahul, MI found themselves tottering at 28 for four after powerplay with pacers Mohsin Khan, Marcus Stoinis and Naveen-ul-Haq doing the early damage. Rohit Sharma (4), Suryakumar Yadav (10), Tilak Varma (7) and Hardik (0) all fell cheaply as Ishan Kishan (32) and Nehal Wadhera (46) and Tim David (35) somehow took them to a par total.Hardik said loss of wickets in a cluster in powerplay hurt them badly and they were never able to fully recover from that. “Definitely, losing early wickets in the powerplay is tough to recover from. Where we needed the most, we could not do well,” Hardik said in the post-match presentation. On being asked if high scores this season have put more pressure on the batters early, Hardik said, “Not really, you still have to see the ball and hit. The wicket was good. The ball was there to be hit and we just missed, that sort of season for us so far. I have always believed that whenever you take to the field, sometimes you will be down, sometimes you will be up, and you have to fight. It looks difficult but there are a lot of things you can learn from this game.”Amid MI’s freefall against LSG, Wadhera stood out, notching up a solid 41-ball 46 and Hardik was quick in praising the responsible effort from the youngster. “He has been fantastic, the way he batted against Rajasthan and tonight. He did fantastic last year as well. It was because of the team combination that he could not play early. Looking at his talent, he will play for a lot of years for Mumbai and for India eventually,” Hardik added. With 7 losses in 10 matches, MI are at the ninth spot. A victory on the other hand, lifted Lucknow to third spot.

He has scored two out of his three fifties at this venue. He is a top choice for LSG top batter. The conditions will help the spinners and Krunal Pandya can create big impact with his left arm spin. We are backing him as top wicket-taker for LSG.Suryakumar Yadav has looked the most assured batter for MI. He has scored a couple of fiery fifties for the team. Surya is one of the best players in this format of the game and in a must win game, MI need him to fire. Back him as top MI batter. Jasprit Bumrah, with 14 wickets, is the leading wicket-taker of the tournament and should be backed as MI top bowler.Rohit Sharma has not scored many runs but he has been aggressive at the top. Lucknow Super Giants vs Mumbai Indians T20 Match Prediction & Betting Tips, IPL 2024 Lucknow Super Giants will take on Mumbai Indians in the 448h match of the IPL 2024. The game will be played at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow and will start at 7:30 PM IST on April 30. Lucknow Super Giants suffered a defeat against Rajasthan Royals in the last game. Having posted 196-5, the team failed to defend the target. LSG are fifth on the points table, with five wins and four defeats. They need to win three games out of their remaining five matches to qualify for the playoffs. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ playoff chances hang by a thread. They lost to Delhi Capitals in the last game. MI have been very ordinary this season and won just three games out of the nine matches played. However, MI are just not out of the playoff race. If MI can win all their remaining five games, they will qualify for the playoffs, however, it won’t be an easy task given how the team has fared so far. LSG vs MI Match Toss PredictionToss will be crucial as teams want to chase in Lucknow because of the dew factor. RR chased nearly 200 runs in last game thus captain winning the toss should chase. LSG vs MI Pitch ReportThe pitch at the Ekana Stadium is slow, however, it gets better in the second innings as the ball skids from the surface if there is some dew around. Spinners are going to play a big role and wickets with new ball will be key. A score of around 200 should be par. Lucknow Weather ReportThe temperature will range between 40 and 23 degrees. Moorthy Chasing a target of 258, Mumbai Indians fell short by 10 runs during the Indian Premier League 2024 against Delhi Capitals in New Delhi on April 27. Mumbai Indians lost Rohit Sharma (8) early with the score at 35. Ishan Kishan (20) also fell with MI score at 45 in 4.1 overs. All the hopes fell on the shoulders of Suryakumar Yadav (26 off 13 balls) who thrashed three boundaries and 2 sixes. But with the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai Indians relied on its captain Hardik Pandya. Pandya (46) scored some scintillating shots and took his team to 136 in 12.3 overs. Nehal Wadhera (4) fell early and Mumbai Indains were in some sort of trouble. But Tim David (37) and Tilak Verma (63) played brilliantly and they nearly took Mumbai Indians home but fell short by 10 runs. Mohammad Nabi and Piyush Chawla played some useful knocks towards the end of the innings. Rasikh Salam bowled brilliantly and took 3 for 34 Khaleel Ahmed (2 for 45) and Mukesh Kumar (3 for 59 ) were among the wicket-takers though expensive. Earlier, after sent into bat, Delhi Capitals went on a run-spree scoring a dauting score of 257 in 20 overs. Jake Fraser-McGurk (84 off just 27 balls) and Abishek Porel (36) started on a brisk note to put on 114 runs in just 7.3 overs. McGurk was particularly severe right from the first ball of the innings and scored at will despatching the bowlers to all around the Arun Jaitley stadium. He hit 11 fours and 6 sixes in his innings. Porel played second fiddle to McGurk. With the quick wickets of McGurk and Porel at 127 in 9.4 overs, it was Shai Hope (41 off 17 balls) and captain Rishabh Pant (29) scored briskly and added 53 runs in just 4 overs. Shai Hope innings consisted of five sixes. With the loss of Rishabh Pant and Shai Hope, Tristan Stubbs (48) and Axar Patel (11) took Delhi Capitals innings past the 250-mark. Jasprit Bumrah (1 for 35), Luke Wood (1 for 68), Mohammed Nabi (1 for 20) and Piyush Chawla (1 for 36) were the wicket takers for Mumbai Indians.
