‘There is no one to actually support…’: Brian Lara slams Mumbai Indians’ bowling | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: West Indian cricket legend Brian Lara and former England captain Kevin Pietersen offered insightful analysis after Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 20 runs in their IPL encounter.Lara pointed out MI’s bowling deficiencies, beyond the formidable Jasprit Bumrah. He emphasized the lack of support for Bumrah, stating, “Their bowling is poor. Beyond Jasprit Bumrah, there is no one to actually support them in that bowling attack, and the CSK batters took them apart.” The batting maestro highlighted MI’s reluctance to utilize spinners against Shivam Dube and emphasized the need for MI to strengthen their bowling lineup. He emphasized, “The spinners, they only bowled 4 overs after around 7 runs an over, but they weren’t trusted with Shivam Dube out there. So, MI will have to improve in that area, they’ve got to find a couple of bowlers, match-winning bowlers.” Meanwhile, Pietersen lauded Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana‘s exceptional performance, describing him as “very unorthodox.” Drawing comparisons with legendary bowler Lasith Malinga, Pietersen added, “It was something that Malinga had as well, it was reverse, but it wasn’t reverse in, it was reverse down, and that’s always going away from the angle of where you’re trying to hit the ball.”ALSO CHECK: IPL SCHEDULEPietersen emphasized the challenge posed by Pathirana’s deliveries, noting, “When you’ve got a bowler that’s coming at an angle, but it’s not coming on at a natural angle, it’s coming on at an angle that actually starts to dip on you, then you can’t actually play the sweep, you can’t play the ramp, because it’s going to get under your bat, and then it also makes it really hard to hit down the ground. It’s a gem for CSK, what a bowler.”(Inputs from PTI)

MS Dhoni and Matheesha Pathirana

IPL 2024, MI vs CSK | Dhoni and Matheesha Pathirana were the point of difference, says Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya credited MS Dhoni and Matheesha Pathirana for being the point of difference between the 2 teams during the match between MI and CSK at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. CSK halted MI’s winning streak at their home ground as they registered an emphatic win to clinch their 4th match of the season. CSK trumped MI by 20 runs to have their first away win of the season. Hardik, during the post-match presentation, admitted that the total of 207 was definitely chaseable but lauded Pathirana’s efforts with the ball and mentioned Dhoni’s valuable guidance from behind the wickets. “Definitely, gettable. But they bowled pretty well and Pathirana was the difference. They were smart with their plans and used the longer boundary well. They got the hang of it, and they have a man behind the stumps telling them what’s working,” Hardik said in the post-match presentation. MI vs CSK: Match report | Highlights It was a comprehensive defence by CSK bowlers on the belter track of the Wankhede Stadium. Pathirana made a return to CSK after missing a couple of matches due to a niggle. He boosted CSK’s bowling attack by picking up 4 wickets and giving away just 28 runs. BABY MALINGA STUNS MI At one point, MI were racing away with the target as they lost no wickets for 70 runs. However, Pathirana in his very first over went on to dismiss Ishan Kishan. From there, MI kept on losing wickets as Rohit Sharma stood at the other end and went onto score a century. Pathirana registered his best IPL figures and was adjudged as the Player of the Match. Hardik also mentioned the difficulty in hitting against the pacers on this wicket and hoped for the team to come back in their next games. IPL 2024 Full Coverage | IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings | 2024 IPL Full Schedule “The ball was slightly gripping, and they got ahead of the game. Until Pathirana came, we were on course for the total. It was just about what was best at that point (on whether they could have used a spinner to Dube?). For seamers, it was more difficult to hit on this wicket. We are now on the road for the next four games. If we are smart, we can get the goal we want,” Hardik added. DHONI’S BLITZ AT WANKHEDE The highlight of the El Clasico was Thala Dhoni’s arrival at the crease and yet again finishing off in style at Wankhede, but this time for CSK. Hardik was slammed for 3 consecutive sixes on the trot and his fiery knock of 20 runs from last 4 balls propelled CSK to a winning total. Published By: Diya Kakkar Published On: Apr 15, 2024

Young wicketkeeper’s 3 sixes, Baby Malinga: CSK captain credits Dhoni, Pathirana for MI win

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad credited MS Dhoni’s superb cameo and Matheesa Pathirana’s sensational bowling effort for Chennai’s 20-run win over MI in the IPL 2024 match at the Wankhede Stadium. Gaikwad addressed Dhoni as a ‘young wicketkeeper’ while acknowledging his unbeaten 20-run cameo as a game-changer. Dhoni’s ballistic 4-ball 20 garnished forceful fifties by Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad as Chennai powered to a strong 206 for four against Mumbai, which turned out to be a winning total. “The young wicketkeeper (MS Dhoni) scoring those three sixes helped us a lot, that proved to be the difference. We needed those 10-15 extra runs for this kind of venue. In the middle phase, Bumrah bowled really well. I feel we were spot on with our execution with the ball despite them scoring some great shots. I would have taken 6 overs 60 at the powerplay,” Ruturaj Gaikwad said after the win over MI. Chennai were under the pump inside the Powerplay as the opening pair of Mumbai were doing some real damage. However, the introduction of Matheesha Pathirana in the 8th over, turned things around in the blink of an eye as he got two big wickets in his first over and got his side back in the game. Chennai once again let another partnership build before Ruturaj Gaikwad brought Pathirana in and he yet again delivered with a wicket. This was well backed up by the likes of Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande who went for just 5 runs combined in their final overs. In the end, Mustafizur Rahman got hit but got David out and then Pathirana closed things out well. IPL 2024 Full Coverage | IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings | 2024 IPL Full Schedule Gaikwad lauded Pathirana’s performance, emphasizing his critical role in the team’s bowling strategy. Alongside Pathirana, Tushar Deshpande and Shardul Thakur also received praise for their contributions, highlighting the collective effort of the bowling unit. Looking ahead, Gaikwad emphasized the importance of maintaining simplicity in approach and fostering a positive mindset among the team members. “You need to be on the mark with bowling and batting at this venue. Our Malinga (Matheesa Pathirana) bowled really well today, he nailed those yorkers. Not to forget, Tushar and Shardul also did well. (On plans ahead) I think we need to keep it simple, encourage all to be in a good headspace and continue the same way. Jinks was carrying a bit of a niggle, so thought it was better for him to open. I’m fine batting anywhere, plus it is the added responsibility as the team captain,” Ruturaj added. Published By: Saurabh Kumar Published On: Apr 15, 2024 Tune In

MI vs CSK, IPL 2024 highlights: Matheesha Pathirana overshadows Rohit Sharma’s century as Chennai Super Kings beat Mumbai Indians by 20 runs | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Matheesha Pathirana and the timeless MS Dhoni dealt decisive blows as Chennai Super Kings triumphed over Mumbai Indians by a margin of 20 runs, despite Rohit Sharma‘s resilient, unbeaten 105 in their clash in the Indian Premier League on Sunday.Dhoni’s onslaught of three consecutive sixes in the final over, bowled by Hardik Pandya, propelled CSK to a commanding total of 206 for four, with Dhoni himself reaching 20 not out from just four deliveries.Pathirana’s stellar performance, claiming 4 wickets for 28 runs, effectively curbed MI’s chase, restricting them to 186 for six. Rohit showcased his brilliance with only his second IPL century and first since 2012, smashing 11 boundaries and five maximums in his 63-ball innings. However, his remarkable innings lacked support from the rest of the MI lineup, despite the favorable batting conditions at the Wankhede Stadium. The defending champions, CSK, secured their first away victory of the season, propelling them to third place with eight points, while MI suffered their fourth defeat in six matches, languishing at the eighth position in the standings. In a game wherein the loudest cheers were reserved for Dhoni, Mumbai skipper Pandya continued to get booed intermittently. There were, though, a section of fans cheering him on at least once, like they did in the last game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.Unlike CSK, who got their majority of runs in the last 10 overs (136), Mumbai Indians remained in the hunt of in the initial part through Rohit’s sustained acceleration and some handy contributions from others.Once again, Rohit set the platform for Mumbai with a sturdy 70-run stand in seven overs with Ishan Kishan, who raced to 23 off 15 balls (3x4s, 1x6s).With MI on charge, pacer Pathirana produced a two-wicket over after the powerplay accounting for Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav (0), getting him caught at third man with Mustafizur Rahman producing a juggling act at the ropes to complete the catch. Tilak Varma aided Rohit with a 20-ball 31 laced with five fours, adding 60 off 38 balls for the third wicket, but Pathirana’s return broke their stand. However, it was the Mumbai duo of Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande tilted the game in favour of CSK, producing two tight overs which broke the back of MI’s chase.Pandya fell for just two but consumed six balls and Tim David hammered a couple of sixes but failed to capitalise. Amid all this, Rohit remained stuck at the other end watching the game slip away despite his best effort.Earlier. Dhoni’s ballistic 20 garnished forceful fifties by Shivam Dube and Ruturaj Gaikwad as Chennai Super Kings powered to a strong 206 for four.Dube (66 not out, 10×4, 2×6) and Gaikwad (69), who milked 90 runs off a mere 45 balls for the third wicket, gave Chennai innings steam in the initial and middle passages of the play before Dhoni mesmerized a packed Wankhede with vintage shot-making. The former CSK skipper hammered three consecutive sixes off MI skipper Pandya (2/43) to help his side collect 26 runs off the final over.Dhoni’s stunning knock – which had the balls sailing over long-off, wide long-on and deep square leg – also pushed Chennai past the 200-run mark, which did appear tough until that final over.Even though he could not push beyond 69, which came off 40 balls with five sixes and as many boundaries, Gaikwad appeared in prime form. The CSK skipper hit through the line effortlessly to clear ropes and when the MI bowlers challenged him by angling their deliveries into his body, Gaikwad improvised to find his runs without taking any unwanted risks.Dube remained unbeaten on 66 off 38 balls, studded with 10 fours and two sixes.(With inputs from PTI)

Matheesha Pathirana stars with ball to help CSK beat MI despite Rohit Sharma’s second IPL century – India TV

Image Source : BCCI/IPL Chennai Super Kings kept their calm with the ball in the end to defend a score at Wankhede Stadium against the Mumbai Indians Chennai Super Kings (CSK), irrespective of the venue, the conditions, the long batting line-up of the Mumbai Indians, pulled off what is rare at the Wankhede Stadium, defending a total, especially in the night games as the Men in Yellow won by 20 runs on Sunday, April 14. Former Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma smashed his second IPL century but no other batter supported him from the other end. Matheesha Pathirana was the difference between the two sides in the end as he took four wickets to break the back of the chase for the home team. At 130/2 in the 14th over, Mumbai Indians were on course to chase down 207 runs with two set batters in, however, the wicket of Tilak Varma proved to be the turning point as the strike dried up for Rohit and the incoming batters kept hitting out to the fielders on the boundary and eventually the Mumbai Indians fell short. Captain Hardik Pandya struggled to get going, Tim David hit a couple of big sixes but he too got out as the pressure kept mounting on Rohgit and the required run rate kept rising to 14, 15 and 17. Rohit did get a few boundaries at the end but it just wasn’t enough and the Mumbai Indians will be disappointed at how the chase panned out ultimately.  More to follow…

Rohit Sharma scripts history, becomes first Indian to achieve massive T20 milestone – India TV

Image Source : AP Rohit Sharma broke a few records during his knock against the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2024 Indian captain and former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma scripted history in the shortest format as he became the first Indian cricketer to hit 500 T20 sixes in the most-awaited clash of IPL 2024 against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, April 14 at the Wankhede Stadium. Rohit with a six off Ravindra Jadeja in the 11th over having smashed his 43rd fifty in the IPL achieved the milestone as he became the fifth batter to do so and first Indian. On the same day, KL Rahul reached 300 sixes in the format in the earlier game between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Most sixes in T20 cricket  1056 – Chris Gayle (455 innings) 860 – Kieron Pollard (586 innings) 678 – Andre Russell (420 innings) 548 – Colin Munro (409 innings) 501* – Rohit Sharma (419 innings) Most sixes by Indian players in T20 cricket  502* – Rohit Sharma (419 innings) 383 – Virat Kohli (365 innings) 328 – MS Dhoni (334 innings) 325 – Suresh Raina (319 innings) 300 – KL Rahul (205 innings) Rohit also became the leading run-getter in the MI vs CSK fixture as he surpassed Suresh Raina after scoring just five runs. MS Dhoni equalled Rohit earlier after scoring 20 runs but the opening batter with an unbeaten century, left everyone miles behind. Both teams have locked horns quite a few times in the IPL as well as the now-defunct Champions League T20 and now that both are five-time champions, the rivalry has only gotten fearsome over the years. Most runs in MI vs CSK matches (IPL and CLT20) 837 – Rohit Sharma (MI) in 29 innings 736 – Suresh Raina (CSK) in 32 innings 732 – MS Dhoni (CSK) in 33 innings  664 – Ambati Rayudu (MI, CSK) in 33 innings  636 – Kieron Pollard (MI) in 25 innings Despite Rohit’s century, the Mumbai Indians failed to chase down 207 runs as Matheesha Pathirana’s figures of 4/28 proved to be the difference between the two teams as he kept pegging the home team back with regular wickets and no other batter was able to support the former skipper for the duration of the run-chase. Chennai Super Kings registered their fourth win of the tournament and maintained their third position on the table.

Vaughan leads reactions as calls for CSK all-rounder selection get louder – India TV

Image Source : AP Shivam Dube continued his smashing form in the 2024 edition of the IPL as he slammed an unbeaten 66 MS Dhoni may have ensured that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) got a total in excess of 200 against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the biggest rivalry clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 14, however, the innings belonged to Shivam Dube and his burst in the middle overs that helped five-time champions stay on the course of a big score. Dube stayed unbeaten on 66 off just 38 deliveries as he entered the top five on the list of leading run-getters of the tournament. Dube currently has 242 runs to his name in six matches at an average of 60.5 and a strike rate of 163. Dube single-handedly has taken care of the middle-overs hitting for the Super Kings. Dube, who dismisses any and every spinner from its presence, has developed his game against the pacers and slowly and gradually is proving to be a key acquisition for the Super Kings and auditioning more than decently for a place in India’s T20 World Cup. On Sunday, as soon as Dube came in to bat in the eighth over of the innings, MI skipper Hardik Pandya didn’t bowl a single over of spinners after that and Dube was still able to play at a strike rate of close to 175. Whether it was Akash Madhwal, Hardik Pandya, Gerald Coetzee or Romario Shepherd, who got special treatment from the left-hander, Dube didn’t leave any of them. If the ball was in his area, he smashed it. With the consistency in hitting that he is showing, Dube has made himself a frontrunner to get picked for the T20 World Cup, not just based on his IPL form. Dube was also the highest run-getter in the series against Afghanistan with a couple of fifties and calls to get him picked have gotten louder. Take a look- CSK finished with 206 runs on the board, however, Mumbai Indians have kept themselves on course to chase the total down with Rohit Sharma leading the charge with the bat.

It (pitch) looks better than the last game, expecting a lot of runs. Need to stick to the basics. Winning is very important to get the momentum. We were able to win two games convincingly. That’s the beauty about IPL, everyone has to contribute. Your team will be able to achieve goals eventually. The dew started coming post 10 overs. It gets heavier in the evening. Same team,” Hardik said at the toss. “We would have bowled first, something we can’t control. Need to do well in all three departments. This is the beauty of IPL. always fluctuating.
