‘Can’t believe Virat Kohli knew people were dying outside and…’: RCB’s ‘over-the-top’ hype blamed for Bengaluru stampede

Neither Royal Challengers Bengaluru nor Virat Kohli could have imagined in their wildest dreams that their IPL victory parade would turn into a tragedy for Bengaluru’s cricket fans. Just a day after Kohli and RCB clinched the IPL title, ending a 17-year wait, everything seemed to be unfolding perfectly. The team arrived in Bengaluru from Ahmedabad, eager to share their joy with fans. Little did they know that within hours, their celebration would turn into a nightmare as a stampede erupted outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, tragically claiming 11 lives and injuring 33 others. Virat Kohli expressed grief on the Bengaluru tragedy(AFP) The tragic stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium cast a dark shadow over RCB’s IPL victory celebrations, drawing criticism for the team’s decision to proceed with the felicitation ceremony inside while chaos erupted outside. Harrowing videos of the incident, which claimed lives and left many injured, continue to circulate online. Upon realising the scale of the tragedy, RCB, including Kohli, promptly offered condolences. However, former India pacer Atul Wassan argues that the players should not be blamed. He was taken aback by the unprecedented hype surrounding RCB’s win, noting that none of the nine previous IPL-winning franchises had sparked such fervour. Wassan believes this frenzy, not the players, fuelled the madness in Bengaluru. “Yeah, so very sad, you know, it’s tragic what I heard, and it just transpired in front of my eyes because since last night after the match, I’ve been doing shows, and I saw that relief on Virat’s face and the kind of traction. I could see that, and he had made it clear in 2016 when he lost it that it was one of his worst moments. So I think the fans got into this. They bought into this story of Virat that it was such a big thing, and when Virat got it eventually with Anushka and all, that I think is when fans went crazy,” Wassan told ANI. Also Read: RCB shown no mercy, IPL champions shredded after stampede outside Chinnaswamy claims 11 lives; ‘Owner made big mistake’ “But what transpired later on in the morning with the motorcade and the kind of celebrations that over the time triggered over the over euphoria, which I could not believe. I was watching it and I was watching it as a public experiment, as a social experiment that how can a local franchise get so much hype. I was trying to analyse it because Virat has been with them for 18 years. He probably has got everything under the Sun, but he probably felt that because of his skin in the game – with this franchise, he thought that maybe he had to deliver it. So I think it’s just the Virat factor, the connect with Virat that the fans have got worldwide.” Also Read: ‘DISGRACED’: BCCI shocked but has ‘no role’ in Bengaluru stampede that caused deaths, injuries during RCB victory parade Wassan expressed disbelief at the exaggerated hype surrounding RCB’s IPL victory, comparing it to surpassing India’s World Cup triumph. He praised the IPL and franchises for their brilliant marketing, likening it to how American sports like the NFL or NBA overhype events as the “World Series”, despite being local competitions. Wassan argued that this inflated excitement, not politicians, triggered the mishap in Bengaluru, describing it as a nightmare come true. ‘Players not to be blamed’ Wassan further noted that rallying such a massive crowd would typically require significant expenses, like providing meals or gifts, but this was a spontaneous outpouring, offering free publicity for the franchises. With RCB’s win, Wassan believes they’ll increase rates for next year’s slots, as this kind of fan connection is priceless. He emphasised that the players weren’t to blame, as they were simply celebrating with fans who had supported them for 18 years, aiming to give back to their loyal base. “Virat was paying it back to the fans. I cannot believe in a million years that Virat – I have known him as a kid, as a person – knew that people are dying outside, and the felicitation was going inside. The politicians, I can believe, because they are ruthless, thick-skinned. They are mercenaries and as is the corporate, which is the RCB franchise. They don’t care because they have to show the balance sheets. They have to show revenue. They would have known so it was a lack of communication. By the time the players would have gotten to know, they didn’t have any say in it. If they did, they would have immediately walked out,” the former pacer mentioned.

The long wait that defined Kohli and RCB’s triumph

The long wait that defined Kohli and RCB’s triumph

New Delhi: For a while, as Virat Kohli struggled in the middle on Tuesday, it looked as if Royal Challengers Bengaluru would be left to despair again in the IPL final. The run-rate wasn’t where they would have wanted it to be, Punjab Kings were putting on the clamps and RCB’s talisman was not able to get going. The wait, some dreaded with the RCB total on 125/3 after 14 overs, could continue. Virat Kohli, who has been with RCB since the inception of the league in 2008, finally laid his hands on the coveted IPL trophy. (AP) The cruellest cut in sport is to be within touching distance of the ultimate prize and then not win it. For RCB, it had happened thrice already, in 2009, 2011 and 2016. On each occasion, the cameras had zoomed in on Kohli. The expressions were a mix of dejection, disbelief and desperation — each feeling perhaps a reflection of where Kohli’s career was at that point. But this time, as the match wound to a close, Kohli could barely control the tears. When the final ball was bowled, he was on his knees and let it all out. Triumphs are sometimes defined by the wait; by how hard you have had to work for them; by how much the struggle changed you. This was the journey of a lifetime – for the club and the player. When Kohli was asked where he would rank the achievement, his answer revealed that the quest tested him in many ways. “It’s right up there, if I have to be honest,” said Kohli. “I’ve given everything that I had for the last 18 years. I’ve stayed loyal to this team, no matter what. I’ve had moments where I thought otherwise. I stood behind them, they stood behind me. And I always dreamt of winning it with them. This is far more special than winning it with anyone else because my heart is with Bangalore, my soul is with Bangalore. “You know, as a sportsman, when you grind for something, and this is a very high intensity, high quality tournament, which is of great value in world cricket today. I’m someone that wants to win the big tournaments, the big moments, and this one was missing.” The missing one Roger Federer was the clear No. 2 on clay from 2006 to 2008 when he made three straight French Open finals. The only problem was that the man dominating the tournament, Rafa Nadal, was pretty much an insurmountable hurdle and had beaten Federer in all three including a 6–1, 6–3, 6–0 pounding in 2008. But then Robin Soderling produced an epic performance to beat the Spaniard, and the Swiss ace pounced on the opportunity. “It meant a lot to me because it was the last Grand Slam that I was still missing. For me, I had won all the others by 2004, so I had to wait a good five, six years… So, of course, when I won it finally, on a rainy day here in Paris and I came through in the final, it was a beautiful moment,” Federer later said. There are many other greats who will identify with the feeling. Having made his India debut in 1989, Sachin Tendulkar had to wait till 2011 to get his hands on a World Cup. “In the end, what matters is that the trophy is sitting in your dressing room and not in the opposition’s dressing room, and that happened to us,” Tendulkar later said. “It was the ultimate feeling on the cricket field to take that victory lap as champions…” Sometimes the wait is so long that one starts believing it isn’t meant to be. That is when resilience, a single-minded focus and luck make their presence felt. India’s first individual Olympic gold was built on a manic approach by Abhinav Bindra; Andry Murray became the first British male to win Wimbledon in 77 years in 2013, but many will remember the Henmania inspired by Tim Henman as well. Henman didn’t find joy but his struggle inspired a generation. For Blackburn fans, the wait to win the top-flight English football league lasted 81 years but few will top the Red Sox baseball team winning the World Series in 2004, 86 years after their previous title. It inspired jokes and there was even talk of the Curse of the Bambino as the team’s trophy drought started after they traded Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1920. Through it all, the fans, the teams and the players persist. The wait is excruciatingly painful but at the end of the day — as Kohli and RCB will attest — that is what makes the victory taste sweeter still.

Virat Kohli dismissed for first-ever golden duck at T20 World Cup vs USA, Rohit Sharma’s stunned reaction sums it up

Team India’s star batter Virat Kohli continued to endure poor run-scoring form at the ongoing T20 World Cup, as he was dismissed on a golden duck in the match against the USA on Wednesday. Saurabh Netravalkar, the former Indian cricketer who now plays for the United States, removed Kohli as he beat his outside edge for an easy caught-behind dismissal. Virat Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck against USA(Instagram/ICC) This is the first time Kohli was dismissed without opening his account in T20 World Cups, and the first time he registered a golden duck in the format (international matches). Now catch your favourite game on Crickit. Anytime Anywhere. Find out how Netravalkar, the left-arm pacer, gave Kohli enough width for the batter to stretch his arms and go for a drive through covers. However, he couldn’t middle the delivery as the ball picked a thick outside edge, carrying towards wicketkeeper Andries Gous for a simple catch. Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain who was standing at the other end, looked visibly disappointed after the dismissal. Watch: A couple of overs later, Rohit Sharma, too, fell prey to the same bowler, as a thick outside edge shot off high in the air before being caught inside the circle by Harmeet Singh. The Indian skipper was dismissed for 3. Arshdeep shines Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh delivered a career-best performance with figures of 4-9, including two wickets in the first over, as India held the USA to 110-8 in their T20 World Cup clash. Arshdeep also went past Ravichandran Ashwin to register the best figures by an Indian in the tournament’s history; Ashwin held the previous record with 4/11 figures against Australia in the 2014 edition. Despite the modest total, India remain cautious about chasing on the notoriously tricky and slow pitch at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, where they recently scored just 119 in a narrow six-run victory over Pakistan.  A win in this match would secure India’s place in the second round Super Eights. Arshdeep’s early breakthroughs saw him dismiss recalled opener Shayan Jahangir lbw on the first ball and have Andries Gous caught in the deep five balls later, leaving the hosts at a precarious 3-2 after the opening over.

Wasim Akram sends ‘strict answer’ to ‘foreign ex-cricketers’ after Pietersen’s ‘Virat Kohli should leave RCB’ statement

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s wait for an IPL title continues after the side was eliminated earlier this week during its Eliminator match against Rajasthan Royals. The RCB had a stellar run in the second half of the season after winning only one of their first 8 matches; they registered six successive wins to qualify for the Playoffs, capping off a brilliant comeback with a dramatic win against Chennai Super Kings in their final league phase game. Virat Kohli plays a shot during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 eliminator cricket match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Rajasthan Royals(AFP) Virat Kohli, RCB’ star batter, was yet again the side’s most consistent performer and has all but ensured an Orange Cap to his name; he scored 741 runs in 15 matches this season; no other batter has crossed the 600-run mark yet, with only one match remaining in the season. ‘ Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Download Now! Former England batter Kevin Pietersen had suggested after RCB’s loss that Kohli should consider changing his franchise to assure a chance of lifting the IPL title. “I have said it before and I will say it again — the greats of the game in other sports, have left teams to go and seek glory somewhere else. When he has tried and tried so hard — won the Orange Cap yet again and done so much yet again and the franchise fails again. I understand for the brand of the team and the commercial value he brings to the team… But Virat Kohli deserves a trophy. He deserves to play in a team that could help him to get that trophy,” he said, on Star Sports. However, Wasim Akram has now reacted strongly to Pietersen’s remark, stating that the decision to stay or leave should be left to Kohli alone. He insisted that if Kohli doesn’t want to leave, there’s no point having this conversation.  “I’ve a very strict answer. Kevin is a very good friend of mine. All these foreign ex-players, who do the commentary, they tweet about everything related to India. I’m all for it… it’s probably right but it’s not a big deal for me. It’s a big deal for Kohli, maybe. He wants to win for RCB, what would changing the team do for him, then? He wants to win for RCB, that’s his call. That’s my opinion. I don’t want to speak on everything, that’s what I’ve learned,” Akram told Sportskeeda. Kohli, in an earlier interview with RCB, had said that he wanted to retire at the franchise. Auction picks need to be better Akram also commented on RCB’s consistent failures in IPL seasons, attributing their struggles to poor auction strategies. The former Pakistan captain said RCB lagged behind in their bowling attack= and expressed that he’s still surprised at the side’s decision to part ways with Yuzvendra Chahal. “It depends on which players they pick in auction. This season, their bowling wasn’t up to the standard, especially when they play at home. It’s a high-scoring venue. Their batting was fine, but their bowling… you let go of Chahal, I still can’t understand that decision,” Akram said.  “Their coach (Mike Hesson) had said that they thought they would bought him back, but they didn’t have the money left. Make sure you had enough money to buy that player back. It cost them in the middle overs. Hopefully, next year, they will be better prepared with their bowling.”

Virat Kohli’s brilliant gesture for Dinesh Karthik during Orange Cap presentation as RCB WK’s cameo ensures win vs GT

Royal Challengers Bengaluru held nerves as they overcame a mid-innings wobble to secure a crucial four-wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans on Saturday. Led by a scintillating fifty from captain Faf du Plessis, who blazed his way to 64 runs off just 23 deliveries, RCB showcased their batting prowess, particularly during a blistering opening partnership with Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli’s gesture for Dinesh Karthik during the Orange Cap presentation(IPL) The duo’s explosive partnership of 92 runs in just 35 balls set the tone for RCB’s chase, as they aggressively targeted the Gujarat Titans’ bowling attack, plundering boundaries at will during the powerplay. Despite encountering some tense moments, largely of their own making, RCB’s triumph catapulted them to seventh place on the IPL table, keeping their hopes of a playoff berth alive. With eight points from 11 matches, RCB have an outside chance for a spot in the playoffs. The game also saw Virat Kohli regaining his top spot in the Orange Cap list; after being briefly toppled by Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kohli climbed back to the summit with his 42-run knock in the run-chase. He now has 542 runs in 11 matches in the season and was presented the Orange Cap by Dinesh Karthik, who also played a crucial role in RCB’s win. As RCB lost six wickets within just 25 runs in the run-chase after racing to 92/0 in 5.5 overs, Karthik (21*) steered the sinking ship alongside Swapnil Singh, as the duo remained unbeaten to see the side off to its fourth win of the season. While receiving his cap, Kohli showed a respectful gesture to Karthik, as he bowed towards him. The RCB wicketkeeper, in turn, hugged Kohli. Watch the heartwarming moment: While Kohli has consistently been among the runs for RCB this year, he has lacked support from fellow batters. Karthik, however, has produced some strong performances in his finishing role, saving the side on a number of occasions this season alone. RCB’s remaining games The RCB will now return to action on May 9 as they take on the Punjab Kings, whom they had defeated earlier in the season. Their last two matches are against the teams firmly in contention for playoff spots, too, with Delhi Capitals visiting Bengaluru for a crucial clash on May 12, followed by a rematch against Chennai Super Kings, whom they had faced in the opening game of the season.

Watch – ‘And then you die and…’: Virat Kohli on sticking to RCB despite multiple offers | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are synonymous to each other in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Virat has played for RCB since IPL’s inaugural season in 2008 and stuck to it.IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLEVirat has been the captain of RCB for several seasons, bringing his aggressive and passionate style of leadership to the team. Under his captaincy, RCB has seen both highs and lows, including reaching the IPL finals in 2016.But Kohli has stuck with the team even though RCB still haven’t won the IPL trophy. In a viral video, Kohli explains in a podcast what RCB means to him and why he has not joined any other team. The host asks, “Virat I know you love RCB just as much as RCB loves you. Even for a moment, for a second, while playing this IPL, have you ever wondered is the grass greener on the other side?”Virat answers, “To be very honest I have thought about it, yes I won’t shy away from it and I’ve been approached many times as well to come into the auction somehow, put my name in there and stuff. And then I thought about it I was like at the end of the day everyone has X number of years they live right and then you die and then life moves on. And there would have been many great people who want trophies and this that blah blah blah but no one addresses you in the room like “Oh he’s an IPL champion” or “he’s a World Cup champion”. “And it’s like if you’re a good person, people like you and if you’re a bad guy, they stay away from you and eventually that’s what life is all about so for me the understanding that the loyalty with RCB is like how I follow my life is far greater for me than the fact that yes five people in the room would say, “Oh finally you’ve won the IPL with whoever XYZ and yeah you feel good for five minutes but then the sixth minute you could be miserable with some other issue in life, so it is not the end of the world for me,” Kohli adds.Kohli goes on to say, “What this franchise (RCB) has given me in terms of opportunity in the first three years and believed in me, that is the most special thing because as I said there were many teams who had the opportunity but they didn’t back me, they didn’t believe in me so now when I’m successful and I should fall to the opinion of people saying “but the IPL”. This was the case with me till 2018 England tour happened. For four years of my life I was doing well everywhere in the world, the only thing was but “England”. So there’s always going to be buts, you literally can’t live your life like that and I just carry on my own thing and I actually honestly don’t even bother about a third person beyond myself, Anushka discussing things and just being true to ourselves. And that’s it for me, nothing else and no one else’s opinion matters at all.” Overall, Virat Kohli’s journey with RCB has been marked by exceptional batting displays, leadership challenges, and a strong connection with the team’s fan base, making him a central figure in the franchise’s history.Despite Kohli’s individual brilliance, RCB has often struggled to clinch the IPL title. They have reached the playoffs on multiple occasions but have faced challenges in converting those opportunities into championships.Unlike many other players who have switched teams over the years, Kohli has remained loyal to RCB throughout his IPL career. His commitment to the franchise has made him a beloved figure among RCB fans.Kohli’s personal achievements, including multiple centuries and accolades like the Orange Cap, highlight his impact on the team.
