India’s intra-squad match called off after Shardul Thakur bludgeons 122 against Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

All-rounder Shardul Thakur made a strong case for his inclusion in the playing XI for the first Test against England as he slammed an unbeaten 122 while playing for India A in the intra-squad match against India. His knock came against an attack comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh.  Shardul Thakur slammed an unbeaten knock of 122 in the intra-squad match(BCCI Twitter) Earlier, Shardul impressed one and all with the ball in hand as well while bowling for India A as he troubled the likes of KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Karun Nair.  Earlier, Sarfaraz Khan had played a 76-ball knock of 101 runs on Day 2 with the help of 15 fours and two sixes. Shardul was unbeaten at the crease at Stumps on Day 2. He came out to bat on Day 3 and scored his century. The management now has a real headache regarding who to select between Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul. Shardul was not named in the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, while Nitish Kumar Reddy played all five Tests. The latter also scored a century in the Melbourne Test. However, his returns with the ball left much to be desired. The all-rounder last played a Test for India in December 2023 against South Africa in Centurion. He has thus far played 11 Tests, scoring 331 runs and taking 31 wickets. However, the management called the match off after two and a half days. Almost eight sessions were played out. For India, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill impressed with the bat. The duo scored half-centuries to help India post 469 runs on the board. For India A, Sarfaraz was the standout performer, scoring 101 runs off 76 balls. However, he has not been named in the main squad for the series against England.  On Day 2, Jasprit Bumrah had gone wicketless while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna returned with two wickets each. Nitish Kumar Reddy also scalped one.  The Indian team will now leave for Headingley on Tuesday, June 17. The first Test will begin on June 20 in Headingley, Leeds.

IND vs ENG: KL Rahul has special message to Karun Nair ahead of England series | Cricket News

Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul has expressed strong support for his former Karnataka teammate Karun Nair, who has made a comeback to the Indian Test cricket squad after an eight-year gap. Nair, who previously scored a triple century against England in 2016, earned his recall following impressive performances in domestic cricket and county cricket in England. Karun Nair’s return to the national team comes after a successful stint with Northampton in the 2024 County Championship Division Two, where he scored 487 runs in 11 innings. His recent form includes a double century (204) for India A against England Lions in an unofficial Test match. The 33-year-old Nair demonstrated exceptional form in domestic cricket last season, accumulating nine centuries across different formats. His Ranji Trophy campaign yielded 863 runs in 9 matches at an average of 53.93, including four centuries and two half-centuries. Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy Poll Do you think Karun Nair’s comeback will benefit the Indian Test team? In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Nair maintained his impressive run-scoring ability, amassing 779 runs in eight innings at an average of 389.50, including five centuries. His first-class cricket record shows 8470 runs in 186 innings at an average of 49.82, with 24 centuries and 36 half-centuries. “I’ve known him for a very long time and the months that he spent here in the UK playing cricket and how hard and how lonely it was and for him to be able to do all of that and come back into the Indian team,” KL Rahul said in a video posted by BCCI. “I think it’s special for him, for his family, and for friends like us who’ve seen his journey. So, like I said very inspiring as well and hopefully his experience and his learnings from playing county cricket here will hold him in good stead when he plays the Test matches here,” Rahul added. Quiz: Who’s that IPL player? Nair’s previous stint with the Indian Test team lasted from November 2016 to March 2017, during which he scored 374 runs in seven innings. His career highlight came when he became only the second Indian batsman after Virender Sehwag to score a triple century in Test cricket, achieving the feat with an unbeaten 303 against England in Chennai in December 2016. “Feels really special. Very grateful and very fortunate to be able to get this opportunity again and really looking forward and excited to grab this opportunity with both hands,” Nair said in response to his selection. “Not sure actually! I think I’ll have to experience that feeling myself and, you know, just go out there and feel it for myself. And I’m sure there’ll be a lot of feelings, ones that I can’t express right now and It’ll be a special feeling,” Nair added when asked about his emotions regarding the comeback. The duo of Rahul and Nair share a long history, having played age-group cricket together and recently representing Delhi Capitals in the 2025 IPL season. Nair’s selection for the upcoming five-match Test series against England comes with the advantage of his recent experience in English conditions through county cricket.

KL Rahul A+, Yashasvi Jaiswal D: Report card of Indian stars in India A vs England Lions

KL Rahul A+, Yashasvi Jaiswal D: Report card of Indian stars in India A vs England Lions

The India A vs. England Lions series ended with another draw in Canterbury on Monday, June 9. The visitors put on a good showing with the bat and took a lead in the first innings, as KL Rahul and others led the way. The result was always going to be a stalemate as both teams were given a flat deck, and a result was improbable from four days. For the visitors, it was all about giving some much-needed game time for some of the stars, who will be part of the India squad for the Test series against England, starting from June 20. KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur will be part of the squad that will play the first Test in Headingley later this month and they got some good time in the middle across both matches against England Lions. While some of them grabbed the spotlight with their consistent performances, the others failed to impress and make a mark. Before we analyse the performances, a special mention to some of the stars from the series, who aren’t part of the main squad. They have shown that they should be in consideration for a Test call-up in the near future and are knocking on the door of the Indian selectors. Honourable mentions Anshul Kamboj (A): The youngster from Haryana has been turning heads on the domestic circuit and carried the form into the IPL, where he was impressive with CSK. During the two-match series against the Lions, Kamboj showed control with the ball and had an economy of 3.04 on tracks that were best suited for batting. To top it all, he got a fifty in the second innings of the second unofficial Test. Definitely one to watch out for in the future. Khaleel Ahmed (B+): Khaleel Ahmed played just one match and picked up four wickets. India have been looking for a left-arm pacer in the setup for quite some time and Khaleel has been impressive in the past few years. Sarfaraz Khan (B+): Many felt that Sarfaraz was unfortunate to have missed out on the main squad, despite working hard. He played a brilliant knock in the first Test and will remain in the eyes of the selectors. Report card for Indian stars KL Rahul (A+): Rahul put in a special request to be part of the India A squad for the second match against the Lions and made a statement. The Karnataka batter scored a hundred and fifty in the two innings he batted and ended up with 167 runs. Definitely good signs for India heading into the 5-match series. Yashasvi Jaiswal (D): While Rahul excelled, the same coudln’t be said about Yashasvi Jaiswal. In the four innings he batted, the Mumbai batter scored just 110 runs, which included a fifty as well. He will need to bounce back quickly after this one. Karun Nair (A+): The remontada for Karun Nair continued in the two matches against the Lions, as he emerged as the highest run-getter with 259 runs across the two matches. He also picked up one wicket in the first Test to cap off a fine series. Dhruv Jurel (A+): Dhruv Jurel was the most consistent batter during the series with 227 runs and three fifties to his name. If India needs a pure batter during the England series, Jurel would be the man for the job. Abhimanyu Easwaran (B): Abhimanyu Easwaran had a good series with 167 runs to his name from 4 innings and had two fifties to his name. He has been waiting for a long time to be a part of the Indian team and hopefully, he will get it this time. Nitish Kumar Reddy (C): After a breakout series in Australia, Nitish Kumar Reddy didn’t have a great outing in England. The all-rounder scored 135 runs in 4 innings and picked up just two wickets. Shardul Thakur (D): Shardul is aiming to make a return to the Indian team after a hiatus but his audition during the series against the Lions didn’t go according to plan. The all-rounder scored just 80 runs from 3 innings and got three wickets across both matches. Published On: Jun 10, 2025

Abhimanyu, Rahul fifties extend India A’s lead to 184 after Khaleel’s four-for in unofficial Test

KL Rahul followed up his first-innings hundred with another half-century to prepare in earnest for the upcoming Test series, while Abhimanyu Easwaran pressed his case with an 80-run knock as India A stretched their overall lead to 184 in the second unofficial Test against England Lions here on Sunday. India A ended the third day’s play at 163/4 after Rahul (51 off 64 balls) and Easwaran shared 88 runs for the second wicket. Earlier, left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed produced a penetrating spell of seam bowling to return figures of 4/70, as India A bowled out England Lions for 327 in the second session to secure a first-innings lead of 21 runs. In reply, India A once again lost Yashasvi Jaiswal (5) early, but Rahul picked up from where he left off in the first essay. His fluent knock was studded with nine boundaries. Eyeing a maiden Test call-up, Abhimanyu looked solid en route to his second fifty of the tour, which included nine hits to the fence. Abhimanyu, however, fell short of a century as he edged an outswinger from Chris Woakes (2/31) to second slip shortly after a bad light interruption. At stumps on the penultimate day, Dhruv Jurel (6) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (1) were at the crease. England’s George Hill provided the early breakthrough with the left-handed Jaiswal getting out to a tentative poke to the keeper, his second straight low score after his 17 in the first innings. Rahul and Abhimanyu then steadied the innings with a confident stand. The skipper was particularly commanding with his drives and showed good judgement in leaving balls that climbed on length. Rahul, meanwhile, looked comfortable against both pace and spin and brought up his half-century in 61 balls. However, three balls after reaching his fifty, Rahul perished. Eddie Jack got one to rear up, forcing a top-edged pull from Rahul that was pouched at mid-on. Fresh from a double century in the first match, Karun Nair looked composed as he joined Abhimanyu but was dismissed by Woakes. Earlier, England Lions resumed at 192/3 but suffered a dramatic collapse in the morning session, losing four wickets for just 10 runs. Khaleel set the tone, removing skipper James Rew (10) and Hill (0) off successive deliveries to trigger the slide. He then dismissed Woakes (5) to reduce the Lions to 266/8 by lunch. After the break, Nitish Kumar Reddy ended Farhan Ahmed’s dogged 87-ball stay for 24, making it 279/9. However, the last-wicket pair of Josh Tongue and 19-year-old Eddie Jack frustrated India A with a gritty 48-run stand, which dragged the hosts past the 300-run mark. Tongue remained unbeaten on 36 (61 balls), while Jack, in just his second first-class match, impressed with his composure under pressure, striking three boundaries and defending stoutly. India A tried everything to break the final stand, including taking the second new ball in the 81st over. Khaleel was brought back in search of a five-for, but it was Anshul Kamboj (2/56) who finally ended the resistance at the stroke of tea. Tushar Deshpande (2/62) also made his mark, accounting for Max Holden (7). Jordan Cox (45) had earlier batted fluently in the morning, adding useful runs with Rew before falling just short of a fifty to become Khaleel’s first victim. Brief Scores: India A: 348 and 163/4 in 33 overs (KL Rahul 51, Abhimanyu Easwaran 80) vs England Lions 327 in 89 overs (Emilio Gay 71, Tom Haines 54, Jordan Cox 45, Josh Tongue 36 not out; Khaleel Ahmed 4/70, Anshul Kamboj 2/56, Tushar Deshpande 2/62).
