So, I enjoy the responsibility that I get, no matter what stage it is. And at that time, I try not to feel the pressure and enjoy the moment and bring good results for the team. It doesn’t happen on a few occasions, but I try not to let it affect me, and when I get a chance in the next match, I do my best and win matches for the team,” he told JioHotstar. Why did Punjab Kings batters fail against Suyash Sharma? The spinner reveals | Cricket News

Suyash Sharma (Image credit: BCCI/IPL) NEW DELHI: The googly proved to be Suyash Sharma’s deadly weapon as he helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure a commanding eight-wicket victory over Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, propelling RCB into the IPL 2025 final. The leg-spinner credited some assistance from the worn pitch for his success. Punjab Kings bowling coach James Hopes on where it went wrong – after the first over In a remarkable spell of 3-17, Suyash dismantled Punjab’s lower order by taking the wickets of Shashank Singh, Musheer Khan, and Marcus Stoinis in quick succession. His efforts ensured PBKS were bundled out for a mere 101 runs in just 14.1 overs. RCB comfortably chased down the target in exactly 10 overs, marking their first IPL final appearance since 2016.“I have performed well, that’s why everyone is happy for me. My coaches gave me just one role, which was to hit the stumps, whether I bowl leg-break, googly, flipper, or any other variation. I just try to finish all my percentage balls on the stumps,” said Suyash. Poll Did the pitch conditions play a crucial role in RCB’s win? He added, “It (googly) is my stock ball, and also I got a bit of help from the wicket as well, so that’s why many weren’t able to pick it up. Not quite now (whether he will be celebrating tonight), I will celebrate on the 3rd (June) and very hard as well,” during the post-match presentation. ‘I don’t want to be a one-season wonder’: Punjab Kings’ Shashank Singh Chasing the modest total, opener Phil Salt dazzled with his stroke play, scoring a quickfire 23-ball fifty—his fastest in the IPL—and remained unbeaten on 56 off 27 balls. Reflecting on the match, Salt said that the short turnaround between their last league match and the qualifier worked in their favor.“Great feeling right now, it (the ball) did move a bit. I think that was not the worst wicket to have played on this season. (Replying to what was going on in his mind during the chase) Don’t get out to Arshdeep, we played two group games (with PBKS) and he’s found different ways to get me out, so I was just trying to react to the ball.”He concluded, “I said before the game to Andy (Flower) that it was a blessing in disguise for us. (This win) Gives us the momentum, it is a cliche but true, that’s what you want at the backend of the tournament, want to hit your straps and play a part with the bat or ball.”

RCB will win IPL 2025 and Virat Kohli will be Player of the Match: Shane Watson

Legendary Australia cricketer Shane Watson has backed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to win Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) and Virat Kohli to win Player of the Match. RCB finished the league stage of the tournament on second position with nine wins from 14 matches, having 19 points to their name. It was the first time that the Bengaluru-based franchise finished in top two after nine years. As a result, they have a golden chance to win the tournament and end their 18-year drought of an IPL trophy. Shane Watson has also backed RCB to win the trophy and Virat Kohli to win the Player of the Match award in the final. He also mentioned how the return of Josh Hazlewood for the playoffs is a major boost for the side. “The winner of IPL 2025, and I’ve been thinking long and hard about it, is RCB. And the Man of the Match for me is Virat Kohli, the great man. And here’s the reason why. I just get a feeling that this is the time for RCB. They have had a few blips in the back end of the tournament, but with Josh Hazlewood coming back for the Playoffs, I get a feeling this is the year,” Watson said in a video shared on his X handle. Back in 2016, during the final of the IPL played between RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Watson didn’t have a memorable game. He first leaked 61 runs in four overs and later got dismissed for 11 (9) as RCB lost the match by eight runs. The Australian all-rounder has apologised to RCB fans time and again for his dismal show in the final which deprived them of their maiden title victory. Meanwhile, Hazlewood missed the last two games for RCB as he was nursing a shoulder issue and returned late from Australia. However, his return just ahead of the playoffs has provided a major boost for Bengaluru. The Rajat Patidar-led side will hope that the Australian seamer continues his rich form in the season and finally ends their title drought. Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! PBKS hope to reap home advantage despite Kohli in rival camp

PBKS hope to reap home advantage despite Kohli in rival camp

Chandigarh: Like any other team in the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings should be happy to be playing Qualifier 1 at home in Mullanpur. Local conditions do matter, and though PBKS have two wins and losses each in Mullanpur, the team management will be happy playing here. Punjab Kings, who will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 on Thursday, have reached the IPL playoffs after 11 years. (PTI) Unless of course the Virat Kohli factor comes into play and the Punjab fans come dressed in RCB shirts and cheer for Kohli. PBKS pacer Arshdeep Singh is conscious of that possibility as he appealed to the Punjab fans to support the home team on Thursday. The PBKS-RCB game in Mullanpur last month saw spectators vocally supporting RCB and Virat. Some even jeered a few PBKS players and their families. PBKS have reached the playoffs after 11 years. They will be playing in Mullanpur after 38 days and would want a pitch with extra bounce which their tall fast bowlers can exploit. They have had a great momentum throughout the tournament with the Shreyas Iyer-Ricky Ponting partnership lifting a franchise that had struggled in the last decade. Ponting though says the job is only half done. Speaking to the broadcaster after Monday’s win over Mumbai Indians in the last league game, Ponting said, “We have not achieved anything yet” with the “big games” still to come. “A lot of hard work goes into being able to achieve something like this as a team. It is pretty obvious that this is a really talented team that are all on the same page. It’s a great achievement till now, but really, if you look back, we’ve not achieved anything yet. That’s the one thing I have been saying to the players since the moment we qualified.” Ponting and Shreyas renewed their partnership in PBKS this season having worked together in Delhi Capitals and it has clicked. “The vision for me was always to finish in the top two, and we have got there now. It is a really happy group and we have enjoyed our time in each other’s company for the last ten weeks, but we have got another week to go,” said Ponting with an eye on winning a maiden IPL trophy. This could be the best chance for PBKS considering their performances with domestic cricketers making a mark. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and rookie Priyansh Arya have laid the platform for Iyer and Josh Inglis to build on. Shashank Singh continues to improve as a finisher, while Marcus Stoinis and Nehal Wadhera too have provided batting depth. The bowling has been dealt a blow with the departure of South Africa fast bowler Marco Jansen – he took 16 wickets, complementing Arshdeep (18). Jansen has left for national duty with the Proteas playing Australia in the World Test Championship final from June 11. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who missed the last two games due to a finger injury, is expected to return and team up with the accurate Harpreet Brar. It was Chahal’s four-wicket haul which helped PBKS beat KKR in a low-scoring game in Mullanpur. However, Iyer’s captaincy has provided stability in the team, the India batter delivering after being bought for a whopping ₹26.75 crore. “If you speak to the players individually, Shreyas has spent a lot of time with them. He has pumped them up, given them a pat on the back when they needed it, and given them a kick in the pants when they’ve needed it as well. That is a sign of a good and strong leader,” Ponting said. PBKS has had 16 captains before Iyer took over, and they will hope the man who led KKR to last year’s title will repeat it with them. A defeat won’t be the end of the road. The losers will play in Qualifier 2, against the winner of the Eliminator. RCB come off an impressive final league win on Tuesday against Lucknow Super Giants with Jitesh Sharma finding his touch like the other batters after his brilliant, unbeaten 85 off 33 balls.

Rahane points to batting failures in KKR's poor IPL finish, vows to come back stronger

Rahane points to batting failures in KKR’s poor IPL finish, vows to come back stronger

Ajinkya Rahane said underwhelming batting performances by key players like Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, was the main reason for the defending champions’ disappointing eighth-place finish this IPL season. File | Photo Credit: AP Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane said underwhelming batting performances by key players like Rinku Singh and Andre Russell, was the main reason for the defending champions’ disappointing eighth-place finish this IPL season. Rahane said while the bowling unit largely met expectations, the failure of three-four main batters derailed their campaign. KKR’s season ended with a crushing 110-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Monday (May 26, 2025). “It’s just that for us as a team, three-four guys were out of form. Where we faltered was at the batting end. As a batting unit, collectively, we couldn’t do well,” Rahane said during the post-match media interaction. “Unfortunately, two-three players were going through that phase for us. And that was the reason we couldn’t do well…But again, they are pretty much experienced enough to handle this situation. “I’m sure they will come back stronger next year…Rinku (Singh), Raman (Ramandeep Singh), all the players, they will learn from the mistakes and come back stronger.” Venkatesh Iyer (average 20.28), Andre Russell (18.55), Rinku (29.42), and Ramandeep (9.40), who played key roles in KKR’s 2024 title triumph, failed to replicate their form this season, hurting the team’s prospects. On Sunday (May 25, 2025), Sunrisers Hyderabad piled a massive 278/3 — the third-highest total in IPL history — on the back of Heinrich Klaasen’s 37-ball century, before bowling out KKR for 168. However, earlier setbacks such as the loss to Punjab Kings, while chasing just 112, and a narrow four-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants while chasing 239, proved more damaging for KKR’s campaign. They also had two rain-marred games and ultimately ended up with five wins from 14 matches. “See, this season, I think for us, (it has been) kind of an up and down. We had our moments. We had our chances and I said that earlier also during those matches, as a unit, we didn’t play well, really well,” Rahane said. “But again, this format, that’s how it goes, you know…the Punjab Kings game, LSG game and also the CSK game, I thought those two-three games could have been slightly different. “It’s not easy when you win a championship and, you know, come into the next season, defending the championship, it’s not that easy. As a team, we tried our best. What I can say is, we’ll come back really stronger next year.” Rahane said the pressure of expectations may have affected the batters’ performance. “When you have a couple of good seasons, as an individual, you put a lot of expectation on yourself. You put pressure on yourself. And I feel that was the case for most of the batters, to prove, you know, that how good I am. And it is completely natural. “I’m sure our players, will learn from the mistakes. It’s a lot to learn from this season, as a team. Not for any particular individual, but for everyone. So many learnings from this season.” Published – May 27, 2025 06:22 am IST

PBKS vs MI: Punjab secure top two spot after 11 years, send Mumbai to Eliminator

PBKS vs MI: Punjab secure top two spot after 11 years, send Mumbai to Eliminator

Josh Inglis’ 73 and Priyansh Arya’s 62 helped Punjab Kings secure a 7-wicket win over Mumbai Indians and make it to Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2025 season on Monday, May 26. The loss meant that MI will take part in the Eliminator as their batting and bowling failed to deliver in Jaipur. Priyansh and Inglis put on a 109-run stand off 59 balls and it proved to be the difference in the end. This was the first time in 11 years that PBKS has finished in the top two of the IPL, and they will now wait to know the result of the LSG vs RCB game on May 27 to know if they will actually top the table. The Jaipur track has been delivering high-scoring thrillers over the past few games with PBKS’ loss to DC seeing a total of 414 runs being scored across both innings. However, on Monday, it seemed like the pitch was a different one. PBKS won the toss and opted to field first, a decision Hardik welcomed as he was unsure about what to do. PBKS vs MI: Highlights | Scorecard The MI start was a mixed bag as there were boundaries but a lot of dot balls. Rohit Sharma, in particular, seemed to be struggling for a long time, especially against the left-arm pacers Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen, before a boundary in the third over. Rickleton, on the other hand, played some delightful shots to keep the rate up. The introduction of Harpreet Brar helped Rohit get some momentum with a six and a boundary but Jansen accounted for the wicket of Rickleton to restrict MI to 52 for 1 in the powerplay. The next two overs saw MI’s scoring rate reduce a bit before Suryakumar ensured 15 came off the ninth over from Kyle Jamieson as momentum seemed to shift for Mumbai. However, Harpreet would get the last laugh over Rohit as the MI legend was dismissed for 24 runs from 21 balls. This started a slump for MI as Vysakh Vijayakumar got the wicket of Tilak Verma first before dismissing Will Jacks, who looked menacing and had scored 17 off 8 balls. Amdist this, Suryakumar looked to be steady after getting to his 14th 25-plus score of the season and went past the record set by Sachin Tendulkar for MI. Hardik provided some brief entertainment with a few lusty blows but he also perished as it seemed like Mumbai abandoned the intention to get to 200. Naman Dhir, who is being groomed as the next finisher by MI, gave some much-needed momentum as he hit back-to-back sixes of Vysakh as Suryakumar also joined in with a couple of boundaries as 23 came off the 19th over. Arshdeep brought back some calmness by dismissing both men and ensuring just 3 runs came from the final over. The PBKS innings started much like the MI one as Priyansh got a couple of boundaries in the first over before Deepak Chahar got a maiden against Prabhsimran. While Priyansh looked he was in the zone, Prabhsimran looked a bit itchy and unsettled in the middle. He almost gave away a chance to Chahar in the 4th over but Ashwani Kumar dropped a tough chance. This is when Bumrah was brought into the attack and he delivered immediate success with the wicket of Prabhsimran as Ashwani made amends this time. This brought Inglis to the middle, who has had starts at No.3, but was failing to kick on. However, the Aussie batter seemed to be in a different zone and started with a six off Chahar. He and Priyansh then started to ensure that they didn’t let any of the MI bowlers and started to attack them. Santner was the first to feel the wrath before Hardik got the same treatment. The duo brought their 50-run stand in the 9th over and the 100 for Punjab came in the 11th over. Inglis got to his fifty in 29 balls and Priyansh in 27 as they brought up their 100-run stand by the 14th over. While Priyansh departed, Inglis ensured he stayed almost till the end to ensure PBKS will play the Qualifier 1 in Mullanpur on May 29. 2014 deja vu for Punjab The last time Punjab made it to the playoffs was in 2014. That squad was considered to be the best in the history of the franchise and they finished the at the top of the table. However, the story ended in a bit of an anti-climax as they lost the qualifier 1 and then the final in the end. Since then, they have been away from the play-offs, before this season. This time around, Punjab used their money wisely during the auction and bought a team that had incredible depth as compared to the rest. But the biggest change was the fearlessness and the backing the young Indian players in the squad. Priyansh and Prabhsimran won’t always come off, but they play fearlessly and provided Punjab with the ideal start. The vision of Ricky Ponting and the heart of Shreyas Iyer have powered this team on to new heights this season and they will be hoping that finishing in the top two doesn’t turn out to be sour for them. The players are all coming together at the right time and Punjab will be dreaming of that elusive title win. Disappointed Mumbai will need to group Some may argue that after their poor start, MI didn’t deserve to be in the top four. But what they did after that initial slump was some performances that showed why they were 5-time IPL champions. Jasprit Bumrah’s return and the likes of Suryakumar and Rohit finding form at the right time ensured that they reached the play-offs once again. However, their second loss in the last three games show that the wheels seem to be coming off a bit. In Jaipur, the bowling looked a bit clueless in front of Inglis and Priyansh,…
