Mitchell Starc opens up on not returning to India for IPL: We saw what happened

Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc recently opened up on his decision to not return to India after the resumption of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). The IPL was suspended for a week after Pakistan attacked several parts of India. However, the tournament was resumed on May 17 after the two countries agreed to a ceasefire. However, several players decided not to return to India due to several reasons. Mitchell Starc, who was representing Delhi Capitals (DC) also pulled out from the last phase of the tournament. The Australia speedster revealed that his focus was shifted to red ball cricket after coming back home as Australia are set to compete in the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2025. “I’m comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled. That’s why I made my decision post-that, and my focus changed to red-ball cricket for about a week prior to coming over here. Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn’t return. But I’ve had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously, we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision,” Strac told Sydney Morning Herald. Furthermore, Starc stressed on his commitment towards Delhi Capitals (DC), saying that he’s not someone who would pull out of the tournaments after being signed. “I’m still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I’m not someone that’s gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like. These are different circumstances,” he added. Starc was one of the vital cogs in Delhi’s bowling attack as he picked 14 wickets from 10 innings at an average of 26.14. Hence, after his inability to return, Delhi suffered massively as they won just one out of their last three matches and got knocked out of the tournament. CSK fan club’s 2024 warning goes viral after stampede at RCB IPL 2025 celebration | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: A chilling old warning issued by a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fan club in 2024 has resurfaced and gone viral in the wake of the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations that left several people dead and many others injured. RCB clinched their maiden IPL title by defeating Punjab Kings in the 2025 final, prompting massive celebrations in Bengaluru. However, what should have been a historic moment for the franchise turned into a disaster as a stampede broke out during the team’s celebratory parade, resulting in loss of lives and widespread injuries. In the aftermath of the tragedy, fans on social media have revived a 2024 post from a CSK fan account, which had warned about the lack of safety for women and families at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during IPL matches.“To our fans who came and supported us today at Bangalore. Hope you reached home safe! Forever grateful for your love and support! However, with the treatment we witnessed towards all the women, children and families, this is shambles. This is not the Bengaluru we knew. What we can say is that Bengaluru is NOT safe for any women to watch an IPL game in Chinnaswamy if you are not part of the local fandom. The security and fan behaviour is a letdown beyond words and imagination,” the original post from 2024 had stated. Now, in light of the recent tragedy, the same fan account has reposted their warning, expressing frustration over how their earlier concerns were dismissed. ‘A particularly special feeling’: Andy Flower hails Virat Kohli, RCB after historic title win “Lot of engagement from fans on this old tweet. Yes, we did raise concerns about security and safety back in 2024! Instead of the RCB management acknowledging the problem and facing it, trolls came for defence with responses like ‘where is the proof’, ‘sore losers’, ‘use burnol’, ‘sympathy’, ‘this is not harassment’, and what not!“Unfortunately, what happened in 2025 could have been easily avoided if only there was responsibility, attitude, and intention to acknowledge reality!” the CSK fan club posted on Thursday. The resurfaced post has sparked a fresh debate on fan behaviour, security lapses, and event management during high-profile cricket events in India — raising difficult questions for RCB and local authorities to answer.IPL champions RCB announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the 11 supporters, who lost their lives in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium during the team’s IPL victory celebrations.“The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family,” RCB issued a statement on social media on Thursday.“As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of Rs 10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased. In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being created to support fans injured in this tragic incident,” it added.More than 50 people were injured in the incident.

Yuzvendra Chahal played entire IPL 2025 with ‘fractured ribs’; rumoured girlfriend Mahvash makes endearing gesture

Jun 05, 2025 07:04 PM IST Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches during the season and was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker despite missing three matches. Punjab Kings bowler Yuzvendra Chahal played the entire IPL 2025 season with three injuries, which included fractured ribs as revealed by his rumoured girlfriend Mahvash, in her lengthy Instagram post on Thursday. Chahal picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches during the season and was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker despite missing three matches. RJ Mahvash shared a lenghty post on Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal did miss a few games towards the final phase of the tournament, having injured his wrist, and only returned to action in the Qualifier 2 game against the Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad. However, Mahvash revealed that the India star played the entire season with three fractures – one in his ribs and other on his bowling finger. Taking to Instagram, the Radio Jockey, who was spotted in the PBKS corner in nearly all the games this season showing support towards Chahal, penned an endearing post, praising his “warrior spirit.” “They fought, stayed and played till the last match! And special post to @yuzi_chahal23 because what people don’t know is that his ribs got fractured in the second match only and his bowling finger got fractured later, this guy played the entire season with 3 fractures! Also, many congratulations to RCB and fans for winning the title. Everyone played and worked hard! Cricket , and IPL ..my God again! Truly a festival for us Indians,” she wrote in an elaborate post on Instagram. Chahal remains the only bowler in the history of the IPL to pick 200, with second-placed Bhuvneshwar Kumar having 198 wickets to his name. The spinner now has 221 wickets in his career in 174 appearances at an economy rate of 7.96. The experienced bowler played a key role alongside Arshdeep Singh and Kyle Jamieson, who both picked three wickets each, to restrict the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 190 for nine in 20 overs after Virat Kohli’s 35-ball 43. However, Punjab stumbled in the run chase on the tricky Ahmedabad track in the IPL 2025 final on Tuesday. Shahshank Singh did show some effort, blasting 22 runs in the final over after Krunal Pandya’s match-winning middle-over spell, but it wasn’t enough as they fell six runs short. RCB chased mismanaged KKR star hard; blames Kolkata for his disastrous IPL return: ‘If he came and played for us…’

Jun 05, 2025 04:44 PM IST RCB coach Andy Flower felt Venkatesh Iyer would’ve shone under their care, subtly blaming KKR after his poor return of 142 runs. There was certainly an increase in expectation from India all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, when his auction value soared to INR 23.75 crore on the opening day of the mega event in Riyadh last November, an increment of 1087.5 per cent from his base price of INR 2 crore. It further peaked with Kolkata Knight Riders announcing him the vice-captain. Alas, it met the same brutal fate. Succumbed under the pressure, he managed just 142 runs in 11 innings, resulting in a disastrous season. However, Andy Flower, under whom the Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted their maiden IPL title this year, claimed Iyer would have performed better had he been in RCB. RCB won the IPL title beating Punjab Kings in the final(PTI) The last bid price for Iyer, before KKR roped him in, was INR 23.50 crore, which came from RCB. It was among the biggest the franchise ever bid for a player at an auction, thus showing their desperation to acquire the India batter. Although the capital was later used to acquire two match winners who played an instrumental role in their title triumph, Flower, speaking to the media, recalled RCB’s plans for Iyer as he subtly blamed Kolkata for mishandling him. “We really rated Venky; that’s why we went hard for him. We valued having a strong Indian core for our team. If he came and played for us, he would have had a really great season,” he said. How missing out Venkatesh Iyer was a blessing in disguise for RCB? Bengaluru had used the exactly same amount to rope in Josh Hazlewood for INR 12.50 crore and Phil Salt for INR 11.50 crore, before strengthen their unit with two other first XI certainties – Jitesh Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. And all four of them helped RCB claim their maiden IPL title in 18 years. Speaking to the broadcasters, veteran India batter Abhinav Mukund believed it was a lucky escape for the RCB. “In hindsight, they must be thinking, thank God we didn’t go all the way from Venkatesh Iyer. Because their last losing bid was Venkatesh Iyer. And the next three buys were Josh Hazlewood, Jitesh Sharma and I think Phil Salt. Those were the next three buys. And they saved so much in the bank for day two when Bhuvneshwar Kumar came in. So, it was a very clear plan that they wanted to buy all of these players,” he said. ‘Virat Kohli waited only 18 years. Tendulkar’s wait was even longer’: Sehwag draws 2011 WC parallel with RCB’s IPL title

Jun 05, 2025 01:32 PM IST Virat Kohli’s 18-year wait for an IPL title ended on Tuesday night, and Sehwag drew a parallel of the victory with Sachin Tendulkar’s 2011 WC win. Virat Kohli’s long wait for an IPL trophy ended on Tuesday night when he lifted the title after Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the Punjab Kings by six runs. The RCB star, who is the only player to have represented only one franchise since the inception of the league in 2008, faced three defeats in the final before eventually ending the trophy drought in Ahmedabad. Kohli was also the highest scorer in RCB’s innings in the final with 43 off 35 deliveries, and even as it wasn’t the most flamboyant knock, his stay helped RCB reach a strong score of 190/9 in 20 overs. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli reacts while sitting beside the trophy after winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 final cricket match against Punjab Kings (AFP) Following RCB’s win, former India opener Virender Sehwag, who has shared the dressing room with Kohli in Team India and Delhi, lauded the RCB star, while also drawing an interesting parallel with Sachin Tendulkar. When asked about the “wait” that Kohli had to endure for a trophy, Sehwag cited that Tendulkar’s wait for an ODI World Cup trophy was even longer, and still, he never lost hope. “His (Kohli) wait to win the trophy for only 12 years. Sachin Tendulkar waited from 1989 till 2011. So, Kohli’s wait for lesser, and still even Sachin never lost hope. He had made up his mind, he would only bow out with a World Cup trophy in his hand,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz. Sehwag added that Kohli can be “relieved” and retire without regrets, whenever he makes the decision. “It’s the same for Virat Kohli. Now, he can be relieved. He can happily stop playing IPL whenever he wants to make that decision. A player plays to win the trophy. Money comes and goes, but winning trophies isn’t easy. And even as Kohli’s wait ended, he has still made a very strong contribution in their campaign,” added the former opener. Kohli’s campaign Kohli ended the 2025 season with 657 runs to his name in 15 matches, finishing as the season’s third-highest run-scorer. He averaged 54.75 while scoring with a strike rate of 144.71. He smashed eight half-centuries in the season. News / Cricket News / ‘Virat Kohli waited only 18 years. Tendulkar’s wait was even longer’: Sehwag draws 2011 WC parallel with RCB’s IPL title See Less

Shreyas Iyer's shot in IPL final was a criminal offence in my book: Yograj Singh

Shreyas Iyer’s shot in IPL final was a criminal offence in my book: Yograj Singh

Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has lashed out at the Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer for his lazy shot in the final of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Iyer got dismissed for 1 (2) in the summit clash as he edged Romario Shepherd behind the stumps to wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma. The PBKS skipper lost his wicket at a crucial stage, allowing RCB to make a comeback in the match, which put his team under pressure. Yograj Singh was particularly disappointed at Iyer as he called his shot a criminal offence and said there shouldn’t be any apology in this regard. “The shot which Shreyas Iyer played in the final was a criminal offence, according to me. Ashok Mankad told me about this criminal offence, which comes under Section 302. He also told me that the repercussions of this is that you will be banned for two matches. What Shreyas did yesterday is not acceptable. There is no apology for that,” Yograj told ANI. Iyer was fresh from a match-winning innings of 87* (41) in the Qualifier 2 against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the same venue. Hence, his wicket was extremely crucial to Punjab’s chances of winning the match. Following his dismissal, only Shashank Singh (61* off 30) showed some resistance and fought till the end for his team. However, his heroic innings didn’t take RCB over the line as they fell seven runs short of their target. Krunal Pandya (2/17) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/38) were instrumental in scripting RCB’s comeback. Pandya was even adjudged Player of the Match. Earlier, after being put in to bat first, RCB posted a good score of 190/9 in 20 overs with Virat Kohli top scoring with 43 (35), while Jitesh Sharma played a quick-fire cameo of 24 (10). Arshdeep Singh (3/40) and Kyle Jamieson (3/48) picked up three wickets each for Punjab. Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today!
