England’s head coach Brendon McCullum says that India have arrived well-prepared and full of belief for the upcoming five-match Test series against his team.. File | Photo Credit: AP England head coach Brendon McCullum believes India have arrived well-prepared and full of belief for the upcoming five-match Test series but his team is also clear about where it wants to be in the eagerly-anticipated showdown beginning June 20 in Leeds. The series will kick off India’s new World Test Championship cycle. “They’re an outstanding cricketing nation, who will come here with high hopes, and we are looking forward to seeing them,” McCullum told ‘Sky Sports Cricket’. England on the other hand have just completed a whitewash of the West Indies in a six-match white-ball series. Their focus now shifts to the red-ball format as they gear up to take India and also prepare for the Ashes later this year. “It’s important the guys refresh. We know where we want to get to as a Test team.” England will be without tearaway pacer Mark Wood, who has been ruled out of at least the first three Tests due to injury. Fellow quick Jofra Archer will also miss the opening Test, while Gus Atkinson is still recovering from a hamstring strain. Despite the setbacks, McCullum remains confident in England’s bowling options. “There are some quality bowlers that are unavailable, but we have a nice, varied bowling attack with Chris Woakes, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue for the high-pace element,” the former New Zealand skipper said. “We have Shoaib Bashir, who is growing in Test cricket every day. We know we are going to be tested against India, and they will arrive prepared,” he added. India begin a new era after Test retirements of veterans Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and R Ashwin. The team will be led by Shubman Gill and features a youthful lineup including Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal. England all-rounder Jacob Bathel has been recalled and McCullum was all praise for the 21-year-old. “Bethell has a good life in front of him. For a 21-year-old, he’s got a real poise, and that allows him to go out there and be present and show off his flair and talent,” McCullum said. “The world is his oyster. He’s already becoming a leader in the dressing room which is what you want,” he added. McCullum also mentioned Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett as the talents to look forward to. “Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett have reminded me of Duckett and Zak Crawley in the Test game. We know how good Duckett is, but the power that Smith possesses is amazing. “These guys are fearless, and if you add the craft, then you hope you end up with a rounded player.” Published – June 12, 2025 11:54 am IST

Sourav Ganguly unhappy with Shreyas Iyer’s absence from Tests: He can play short ball

Former India cricketer turned commentator Sourav Ganguly is not happy to see Shreyas Iyer’s absence from the Indian Test team for the upcoming series against England. Iyer has been in fine form over the past one year having guided Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL triumph in 2024 and further led Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in the recent edition. Recently, Ganguly questioned Iyer’s absence from the Test team, mentioning his terrific performances over the past one year. The legendary India captain also stated that Iyer has also worked on his short ball weakness and praised him for scoring runs under pressure. “He has been playing at his best in the last one year, and should have been in this team. Last one year has been fantastic for him. He is the player who got left out. He is now scoring under pressure, taking responsibility, playing the short ball well. Although Test cricket’s different, I would have had him in this series to see what he can do,” Ganguly told RevSportz. Iyer last played Tests back in 2024 as he was dropped from the team midway through the series against England. In the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, he accumulated 480 runs from seven innings for Mumbai at an average of 68.57 with two hundreds to his name. Meanwhile, Ganguly also backed India to do well in England and win the series, saying that Jasprit Bumrah’s form will play a key role in the team’s success. “Yes, sure. We just need two things, batting well and [Jasprit] Bumrah remaining fit. We won in Australia, in Melbourne (2020-21), with a young batting line-up, having no [Virat] Kohli, no Rohit Sharma. So, I do not see why we cannot win,” he added. India are set to take on England in a five-match Test series beginning from June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. It will be the first assignment for the new captain Shubman Gill and vice captain Rishabh Pant. India haven’t won a series in England since 2007 and will be up against Ben Stokes’ men, who recently climbed to second spot in the ICC Test rankings. KL Rahul A+, Yashasvi Jaiswal D: Report card of Indian stars in India A vs England Lions

KL Rahul A+, Yashasvi Jaiswal D: Report card of Indian stars in India A vs England Lions

The India A vs. England Lions series ended with another draw in Canterbury on Monday, June 9. The visitors put on a good showing with the bat and took a lead in the first innings, as KL Rahul and others led the way. The result was always going to be a stalemate as both teams were given a flat deck, and a result was improbable from four days. For the visitors, it was all about giving some much-needed game time for some of the stars, who will be part of the India squad for the Test series against England, starting from June 20. KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur will be part of the squad that will play the first Test in Headingley later this month and they got some good time in the middle across both matches against England Lions. While some of them grabbed the spotlight with their consistent performances, the others failed to impress and make a mark. Before we analyse the performances, a special mention to some of the stars from the series, who aren’t part of the main squad. They have shown that they should be in consideration for a Test call-up in the near future and are knocking on the door of the Indian selectors. Honourable mentions Anshul Kamboj (A): The youngster from Haryana has been turning heads on the domestic circuit and carried the form into the IPL, where he was impressive with CSK. During the two-match series against the Lions, Kamboj showed control with the ball and had an economy of 3.04 on tracks that were best suited for batting. To top it all, he got a fifty in the second innings of the second unofficial Test. Definitely one to watch out for in the future. Khaleel Ahmed (B+): Khaleel Ahmed played just one match and picked up four wickets. India have been looking for a left-arm pacer in the setup for quite some time and Khaleel has been impressive in the past few years. Sarfaraz Khan (B+): Many felt that Sarfaraz was unfortunate to have missed out on the main squad, despite working hard. He played a brilliant knock in the first Test and will remain in the eyes of the selectors. Report card for Indian stars KL Rahul (A+): Rahul put in a special request to be part of the India A squad for the second match against the Lions and made a statement. The Karnataka batter scored a hundred and fifty in the two innings he batted and ended up with 167 runs. Definitely good signs for India heading into the 5-match series. Yashasvi Jaiswal (D): While Rahul excelled, the same coudln’t be said about Yashasvi Jaiswal. In the four innings he batted, the Mumbai batter scored just 110 runs, which included a fifty as well. He will need to bounce back quickly after this one. Karun Nair (A+): The remontada for Karun Nair continued in the two matches against the Lions, as he emerged as the highest run-getter with 259 runs across the two matches. He also picked up one wicket in the first Test to cap off a fine series. Dhruv Jurel (A+): Dhruv Jurel was the most consistent batter during the series with 227 runs and three fifties to his name. If India needs a pure batter during the England series, Jurel would be the man for the job. Abhimanyu Easwaran (B): Abhimanyu Easwaran had a good series with 167 runs to his name from 4 innings and had two fifties to his name. He has been waiting for a long time to be a part of the Indian team and hopefully, he will get it this time. Nitish Kumar Reddy (C): After a breakout series in Australia, Nitish Kumar Reddy didn’t have a great outing in England. The all-rounder scored 135 runs in 4 innings and picked up just two wickets. Shardul Thakur (D): Shardul is aiming to make a return to the Indian team after a hiatus but his audition during the series against the Lions didn’t go according to plan. The all-rounder scored just 80 runs from 3 innings and got three wickets across both matches. Published On: Jun 10, 2025

Sophie Ecclestone takes break from cricket for well-being before India series

England spinner Sophie Ecclestone has opted for a break from domestic cricket to prioritise her well-being before the series against India. The 26-year-old left-arm spinner was recently left out of the national squad for their ongoing white-ball series against the West Indies. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), however, said that Ecclestone remained available for selection for the series against India. Apart from focussing on her well-being, Ecclestone took time off from the game to manage a minor quad injury. Charlotte Edwards, who recently took charge as England women’s head coach after replacing Jon Lewis, backed Ecclestone’s decision to take a break. “Sophie has been managing a quad niggle over the past week but, more importantly, she wants to take a step back from cricket for a short period to look after herself,” Edwards said in a statement. “We’re totally behind that. We want to be able to select Sophie for the India series but the most important thing for her at the moment is that she feels in a better place. We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that,” Edwards added. On the very day when England’s squad for the West Indies were announced, Ecclestone represented Lancashire in the Women’s One-Day Cup. Since then, the youngster has 14 wickets from eight matches, including a four-wicket haul against Surrey in the T20 Women’s County Cup final. Ecclestone has been an effective spinner for England, having taken 297 wickets from 177 matches with seven four-wicket hauls and five five-wicket hauls. Ecclestone also plays for the UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). India’s tour of England starts on June 28 with the T20I series opener at The Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The T20I series will be followed by the ODI series, which is scheduled to get underway on July 16 in Southampton. Published By: sabyasachi chowdhury Published On: Jun 7, 2025

India tour of England: No more musical chairs! For KL Rahul, England could finally be home | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Whenever an Indian captain has found himself in trouble, they’ve often turned to their ‘Rahuls’. Be it Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli, or the recently-retired Rohit Sharma, their ‘Rahuls’ have delivered when it mattered most. Rahul Dravid, India’s legendary Test batter, frustrated world-class pace attacks as he stood guard like his life depended on it. Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy Poll Should KL Rahul be the permanent opener for India in Test matches? It wouldn’t be wrong to say that challenges seem to follow KL Rahul wherever he goes. He has faced many, but one of the most puzzling episodes unfolded in Australia during the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy.Rohit, then India’s Test captain, missed the opening Test due to the birth of his second child. The team management asked KL Rahul to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. India went on to win the match convincingly by 295 runs. KL Rahul contributed 26 and 77 in the two innings, while stitching a 200-run match-defining stand with Jaiswal. When Rohit returned for the second Test, the team chose not to disturb the successful opening combination. KL Rahul continued to open with Jaiswal, while Rohit slotted himself at No. 6. India, however, lost that match by 10 wickets, with KL Rahul scoring 37 and 7.In the third Test, KL Rahul again opened and produced a gritty 84 — the highest score by an Indian batter in the match — which ended in a draw. But the real drama began during the fourth Test. Rohit, struggling for runs, brought himself back at the top of the order and pushed KL Rahul down to No. 3. The decision backfired. Rohit scored just 3 and 9, while KL Rahul — clearly unsettled by the shift — managed 24 and a duck. The question on everyone’s lips was the same — why change KL Rahul’s position when he was performing as an opener? With Rohit opting out of the fifth and final Test, KL Rahul opened once again. India lost the match by six wickets and the series 1-3.Samuel Jayaraj, KL Rahul’s childhood coach, said the cricketer has been handling challenges from a very young age.“When he was just 11 years old, and for the next 12 years, he played in the Under-13s for Mangalore. Let me tell you — Mangalore Zone never had strong batsmen [batters]. It was always known for its bowling attack. But KL scored two double hundreds. He used to bat from both ends. I still remember — by the fourth or fifth ball, he would take a single, go to the non-striker’s end, and then be back on strike to face the next over. He handled pressure brilliantly, even at that age,” Jayaraj told TimesofIndia.com.“So, if you ask me, as a coach, this isn’t surprising. He was always ready. He was also a wicketkeeper. He would smartly rotate strike, taking singles on the fourth, fifth, or sixth ball, then face the next over. He follows instructions really well. If you noticed in the Champions Trophy, his role was very specific—and he executed it perfectly,” he said.“In fact, despite having a very good ODI World Cup, he wasn’t picked for the T20 World Cup. He didn’t crib or get frustrated. Because he has seen these things as a kid. That’s why he’s so strong today both mentally and technically. And that’s his biggest strength. He’s matured a lot. He’s been playing cricket at a high level for 10 years now. That experience shows. If you watch him now, he’s a completely different player — much calmer, composed, and in control. For me, that calmness is what stands out the most,” he said. India Test squad for England tour: Shubman Gill to lead, Rishabh Pant his deputy BIG TEST AWAITS KL RAHUL IN ENGLANDKL Rahul, who debuted in 2014, has played 58 Tests, scoring 3257 runs at an average of 33.57. Among the Indian squad touring England, the right-hander is one of the few to hold experience of playing in England. He has played 9 Tests in England, scoring 614 runs at an average of 34.11, including two centuries and one half-century. His highest score in England is 149.Having previously faced the likes of Stuart Broad, James Anderson, and Chris Woakes, KL Rahul will walk into this series as the seasoned batter. Armed with his past experience, he is expected to play a key role — not just with the bat, but also as a guiding presence for the youngsters. Before departing for the UK, KL Rahul met his childhood coach Jayaraj for a short, but meaningful, discussion.“I always tell him just one thing — enjoy and become. That’s always been my message, my mantra, even my password, you could say. You have to enjoy what you do. You have to be happy. If you’re not happy, your body simply won’t respond the way you want it to,” Jayaraj said.“For me, form is temporary — but the skill and technique you develop stay with you forever. Honestly, when he was playing state and zonal matches in Mangalore and Bangalore, we coaches always had the red ball in mind. We didn’t really think much about white-ball cricket back then. So the foundation he built — the technique and skill — was rooted in red-ball cricket,” the coach added.“In England, a more and more matured KL Rahul will be seen,” a confident Jayaraj remarked. Mark Wood likely to be fit by fourth Test against India: England national selector Luke Wright

Star England fast bowler Mark Wood is likely to return from the fourth Test in the upcoming series against India. Wood was ruled out of four months following a knee surgery after the Champions Trophy 2025. The speedster picked just one wicket in two matches as England got knocked out of the first round itself. Recently, England selector Luke Wright revealed that Wood has progressed well on his road to recovery and has started bowling lightly. Wright said he’s expecting Wood to get fit by the fourth or fifth Test and they’re monitoring his recovery one day at a time. “I think Woody’s now started bowling just lightly, to be honest. He’s just off a few paces, but that’s been a great sign. So, he’s on the road to recovery. I think he’s more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth Test. But again, each day it’s ticking off each box and making sure he’s OK,” Wright said on Sky Sports. Fast bowler Jofra Archer is also sustaining a thumb injury, which he suffered during the final stages of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). As a result, he was not included in the England squad for the first Test vs India set to begin from June 20. Wright also gave an update on Archer’s fitness and mentioned that he’s set to play for Sussex on his road to recovery and is likely to be available for the second Test. “Joff’s trucking on really well, actually. The plans for him, he’s playing a few second-team games. The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test. So, he’ll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test,” he added. To add to England’s woes, Gus Atkison is also not available for the first Test against India due to a hamstring strain. Hence, the ECB was forced to bring back Jamie Overton after three years. He joins Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Sam Cook in the seam attack for the series opener. Published By: Rishabh Beniwal Published On: Jun 6, 2025

Rohit Sharma’s father was disappointed with his Test retirement, India batter reveals

India captain Rohit Sharma has revealed that his father Gurunath Sharma was disappointed after his retirement from Test cricket. Rohit recently bid adieu to the longest format ahead of the all-important tour of England. The batting stalwart played 67 matches in whites and scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. Recently, speaking at the book launch of Cheteshwar Pujara’s wife Pooja, Rohit revealed that his father is a big fan of Test cricket and used to have lengthy discussions with him about his innings played in the longest format. Hence, he was left disappointed when Rohit retired from Tests. “My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with red ball, obviously. So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that’s my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible,” Rohit was quoted as saying by ANI. Furthermore, Rohit revealed that his father wasn’t excited even after his record-breaking innings of 264 in ODIs. “Since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn’t like this new-age cricket. I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It’s important to go out there and all that,” Rohit added. Rohit recently finished as the second-highest run scorer for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). He accumulated 418 runs from 15 innings at an average of 29.85 and a strike rate of 149.28 with four half-centuries to his name. However, he got dismissed cheaply for 8 (7) in Qualifier 2 as MI crashed out of the tournament. Meanwhile, Rohit will be next seen playing ODI cricket on the tour to Bangladesh in August.
