Class act! KL Rahul smashes century vs England Lions in second Unofficial Test; India A in command | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: KL Rahul stormed back into form with a sublime century on the opening day of the second unofficial Test against England Lions in Northampton on Friday. Put into bat first, India A tweaked their playing XI from the previous game, promoting Rahul to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, while skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran moved down to No. 3. But Chris Woakes struck early, removing Jaiswal (17) and Easwaran (11) cheaply, leaving Rahul to steady the innings.Rahul combined caution with well-timed aggression as he expertly built his innings. He reached his hundred in the 56th over and went on to score 116 off 168 balls, laced with 15 fours and a six — a classy knock that couldn’t have come at a better time, with the five-Test series against England starting June 20 at Headingley.Since making his Test debut at the MCG in 2014, Rahul has played 58 Tests for India, scoring 3,257 runs at an average of 33.57. Among the current Indian squad touring England, he remains one of the most seasoned in English conditions. In nine Tests there, he has tallied 614 runs at 34.11, including two centuries and a fifty, with a best of 149.At the other end, Dhruv Jurel extended his fine run of form. After scores of 94 and 53* in the first unofficial Test, the young wicketkeeper-batter compiled a gritty 52 off 87 balls. His 121-run partnership with Rahul helped revive India A’s innings after the early blows. Huge prediction! KL Rahul would play in place of Rishabh Pant in 2026 T20 World Cup Jurel’s stay ended when George Hill bowled him through the gate. Hill then got rid of Rahul as well, with Emilio Gay taking the catch to end the centurion’s superb knock — one that earned generous applause from the Northampton crowd.India’s Test Series Schedule vs England:1st Test: June 20–24, 2025 – Headingley, Leeds2nd Test: July 2–6, 2025 – Edgbaston, Birmingham3rd Test: July 10–14, 2025 – Lord’s, London4th Test: July 23–27, 2025 – Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester5th Test: July 31–August 4, 2025 – Kia Oval, London Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy

‘If India get flogged 5-0 in England … ‘: Michael Clarke’s bold claim on Virat Kohli’s Test comeback | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former Australia captain Michael Clarke believes Virat Kohli, who has often called Test cricket the pinnacle of the sport, might come out of retirement if India endure a heavy defeat in the upcoming five-Test series in England and the team management and selectors request his return.Kohli had announced his retirement from the longest format last month after playing 123 Tests for India, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.“I believe this. If India go to England and get flogged, if they lose the series 5-0 for example, I think the fans will want Virat Kohli to come out of retirement and play Test cricket again,” Clarke told the Beyond23 Cricket podcast on Friday.“And I honestly, I think if he was asked by the captain, selectors and supported by fans, if they get beaten big time in England, I think he’ll come. He still loves Test cricket.“I think his words, I think those words, like you could hear his passion for Test cricket is real.” Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy After fulfilling his long-standing dream of winning the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Kohli had said the title still ranked “five levels under Test cricket.”Both Kohli and Rohit Sharma had announced their retirement from the Test format ahead of the England series, which begins with the opening match in Leeds on June 20.“Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket. I think tactically any team will miss his captaincy. I think tactically he was a brilliant captain. Virat Kohli walks away from Test cricket. Devastating! What an absolute champion he’s been and Test cricket will miss him,” Clarke said.

Mark Wood likely to be fit by fourth Test against India: England national selector Luke Wright

Star England fast bowler Mark Wood is likely to return from the fourth Test in the upcoming series against India. Wood was ruled out of four months following a knee surgery after the Champions Trophy 2025. The speedster picked just one wicket in two matches as England got knocked out of the first round itself. Recently, England selector Luke Wright revealed that Wood has progressed well on his road to recovery and has started bowling lightly. Wright said he’s expecting Wood to get fit by the fourth or fifth Test and they’re monitoring his recovery one day at a time. “I think Woody’s now started bowling just lightly, to be honest. He’s just off a few paces, but that’s been a great sign. So, he’s on the road to recovery. I think he’s more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth Test. But again, each day it’s ticking off each box and making sure he’s OK,” Wright said on Sky Sports. Fast bowler Jofra Archer is also sustaining a thumb injury, which he suffered during the final stages of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). As a result, he was not included in the England squad for the first Test vs India set to begin from June 20. Wright also gave an update on Archer’s fitness and mentioned that he’s set to play for Sussex on his road to recovery and is likely to be available for the second Test. “Joff’s trucking on really well, actually. The plans for him, he’s playing a few second-team games. The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test. So, he’ll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test,” he added. To add to England’s woes, Gus Atkison is also not available for the first Test against India due to a hamstring strain. Hence, the ECB was forced to bring back Jamie Overton after three years. He joins Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse and Sam Cook in the seam attack for the series opener. Published By: Rishabh Beniwal Published On: Jun 6, 2025

Rohit Sharma’s father was disappointed with his Test retirement, India batter reveals

India captain Rohit Sharma has revealed that his father Gurunath Sharma was disappointed after his retirement from Test cricket. Rohit recently bid adieu to the longest format ahead of the all-important tour of England. The batting stalwart played 67 matches in whites and scored 4301 runs at an average of 40.57. Recently, speaking at the book launch of Cheteshwar Pujara’s wife Pooja, Rohit revealed that his father is a big fan of Test cricket and used to have lengthy discussions with him about his innings played in the longest format. Hence, he was left disappointed when Rohit retired from Tests. “My father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with red ball, obviously. So he appreciates red ball cricket a lot. And then, obviously, he was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement. But was happy as well at the same time. But, yeah, that’s my father. And he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today. Without their help, it never would have been possible,” Rohit was quoted as saying by ANI. Furthermore, Rohit revealed that his father wasn’t excited even after his record-breaking innings of 264 in ODIs. “Since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket. He doesn’t like this new-age cricket. I still remember that day I scored 264 in the ODI. He was like, okay, well played. Well done. There was no excitement from him. It’s important to go out there and all that,” Rohit added. Rohit recently finished as the second-highest run scorer for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). He accumulated 418 runs from 15 innings at an average of 29.85 and a strike rate of 149.28 with four half-centuries to his name. However, he got dismissed cheaply for 8 (7) in Qualifier 2 as MI crashed out of the tournament. Meanwhile, Rohit will be next seen playing ODI cricket on the tour to Bangladesh in August.
