England vs India: Sai Sudharsan first Indian batter in 14 years to bag duck in maiden Test knock

B Sai Sudharsan will have to wait a little longer for his first runs in Test cricket. The young batter was dismissed for a duck in his maiden innings for India after edging a delivery down the leg side in the final over of the opening session of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Sudharsan was tasked with the responsibility of negotiating a tricky passage of play-the final six minutes of the morning session-after India lost their first wicket. He walked in at No. 3 following KL Rahul’s dismissal, which ended a solid opening partnership of 91 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Sudharsan appeared nervous at the crease, clearly eager to get off the mark. In his short stay, he was involved in a couple of hesitant calls with Jaiswal, attempting to steal quick singles by playing the ball late-signs of a debutant eager to make an impression. However, on the fourth delivery of the final over before lunch, Ben Stokes bowled an inswinger that was never threatening the stumps. The ball started from leg stump and swung well outside the pads. Keen to get bat on ball, Sudharsan tried to flick it fine in search of a boundary. Instead, he got a faint edge, which was neatly taken by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. Sudharsan looked dejected as he trudged back to the pavilion without troubling the scorers. The young Tamil Nadu batter, who won the Orange Cap in IPL 2025 for the Gujarat Titans, thus joined an unwanted list of Indian players dismissed for a duck in their first innings in Test cricket. He is the first Indian since Umesh Yadav in 2011 to suffer that fate. NO NEED TO CRTICISE HIM: PUJARA Senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who presented Sudharsan with his Test cap during the team huddle on Friday morning, urged fans and pundits not to be overly critical of the debutant. “It was a bit unfortunate-getting caught down the leg side,” Pujara told Sony Sports. “When you’re playing your first game, you’re eager to get off the mark, and that’s probably why he went for that ball, even though it was quite wide of leg stump. Normally, he wouldn’t go for that. But he was tense-it’s natural on debut. Let’s give him some time. “He’s a confident cricketer. There’s no need to criticise him harshly. These things happen, and I’m sure he’ll come back stronger in the second innings. On debut, getting out down the leg side is just one of those things-there’s not much a batter can do in that situation.” India went to lunch at 92 for 2, having handed England a chance to claw their way back into the contest. Jaiswal and Rahul had dominated the first 90 minutes, making Stokes momentarily question whether choosing to bowl first was the right decision. England bowlers struggled to hit the right lengths and lines, but the dismissal of KL Rahul titled the balance in favour of the hosts. Gill has improved massively in the past 12 months as captain: Nehra

Mumbai: Like several far-reaching decisions in Indian cricket successfully tried out first in the Indian Premier League (IPL) – such as appointing Rohit Sharma captain, the emergence of Jasprit Bumrah as a world beater and Suryakumar Yadav the T20 batting marauder – the national selectors would hope Shubman Gill’s ascent to Test captaincy will also come good. Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill in conversation with coach Ashish Nehra during IPL 2025. (AP) Gill will become the fifth youngest Indian captain – counting Ravi Shastri’s solitary Test – when he walks out for the toss at Leeds on Friday in the first of the five-Test India-England series to be broadcast on Sony Sports Network. Gill cut his teeth as captain for Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL. “From his first year as captain, there has been a massive difference in Shubman the captain in the past twelve months,” Ashish Nehra, GT head coach, told a select group of media of which HT was a part. “He might have been a little shy and introverted before, but he has improved a lot. He communicates better with his bowlers. In between, he has also gained international experience.” Leading in Test cricket will present an entirely different set of challenges. But Nehra believes he has already shown traits of being calm under pressure. “I personally rate him that’s why we made him a captain,” said Nehra. “He is a quick learner, a confident guy. He has his own mind which is great. I feel in Test and ODI cricket you get a little more time. In T20 cricket, you need to be even more calm. Shubman is very calm for his age, very mature for a 25–year-old.” For GT, Gill was elevated as captain after Hardik Pandya’s surprise transfer to Mumbai Indians. The first year was a learning curve with Gill himself saying it took him time to compartmentalise batting and captaincy. Leading India would bring its own pressures. It would help if Gill has runs to show because that is the quickest way to earn the respect from teammates. “If the top three score runs, that will make life easy for Shubman at No. 4 and the rest of the batting line up. Of course, you feel more confident as a batter when you score runs,” said Nehra. “He will have his own expectations with himself. The way I see it, it’s not just about the results, it’s what sort of cricket they play. There have been recent series in England where India played a lot better than the scorecard suggested. So, it will be key to play good and exciting cricket.” With India’s batting thin on experience, Bumrah’s role as the leader of the pace pack and how Gill is able to maximise his impact while managing his workload will be of huge interest. “On Bumrah’s workload, the judge won’t be Gill, it will be the fast bowler himself,” said Nehra. “I have been hearing that Bumrah will play the 1st, 3rd and the 5th Test. But what if it rains in the first Test? You can’t make these plans well in advance. Who knows, he may feel good to play back-to-back Tests. “On some occasions, we have seen Bumrah picking up five wickets in 12-13 overs. That’s how skilful he is. It’s the bowler who will tell the physio and the captain on how his body is coping. You can’t script this. This is not a movie.”

Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians TV channels: The fans can watch the match live on Hotstar Live Streaming: Live streaming of the match will be available on the FAFA191 Cricket Exchange India and website. GT vs MI Match Prediction & Analysis The IPL 2025 playoffs are here, and Gujarat Titans are all set to face Mumbai Indians in Mullanpur this Friday in the Eliminator. It’s do-or-die territory—whoever loses is out of the tournament. The winner, on the other hand, moves on to Qualifier 2 to take on the loser of Qualifier 1. Both sides have had ups and downs this season, but they’ve also shown they can beat anyone when things click. Expect a fierce contest in this Eliminator that could easily go down to the wire. TEAMS PREVIEW Gujarat Titans Preview After a strong run through most of the season, where Gujarat Titans kept a tight grip on the top two spots, their momentum took a hit in the closing stretch. They suffered two lopsided losses — an 83-run hammering at the hands of Chennai Super Kings and a 33-run defeat to Lucknow Super Giants. Those setbacks dropped them to third in the standings, meaning they now have to go through the Eliminator. One more bad game, and their campaign ends there. Outside of those two off days, Gujarat have been one of the more dependable sides in IPL 2025. They’ve generally struck the right balance in most departments. Their top order — Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler — has done most of the heavy lifting, each going past the 500-run mark this season. But with Buttler unavailable for the playoffs due to international duty, Gujarat have lost a major piece of their lineup. Kusal Mendis from Sri Lanka is expected to step in. He may not be as explosive as Buttler, but he’s someone who can steady the middle overs if needed. Lower down, Sherfane Rutherford has quietly delivered value, scoring 267 runs in 10 innings at a strike rate of 157. Shahrukh Khan, too, has shown that he can dig the team out if the top order fails. The bowling attack has been mostly steady this season, though the last two games have exposed a few issues. Even so, the team will be counting on Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, who have combined for 38 wickets, to get early inroads. Sai Kishore has chipped in with 17 wickets, even if his economy is on the higher side at 9 per over. Rashid Khan hasn’t had the kind of season GT would’ve hoped for, and that inconsistency could become a problem again. Washington Sundar might be brought in to replace Arshad Khan, who has struggled badly with the ball and been far too expensive. Mumbai Indians Preview Mumbai Indians were within touching distance of a top-two finish after stringing together seven wins in eight games. But a 7-wicket defeat to Punjab Kings in their final league match kept them to fourth. Still, that’s quite the turnaround for MI, considering they dropped three of their first four games. The five-time champions are back in the playoffs and, as always, know how to handle the pressure when it counts. As they head into the knockouts, though, they’ll have to do without Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks. Both are heading back for international duties, and that’s a big blow to their top order. The duo played a big role in giving MI strong starts. In their place, Jonny Bairstow and Charith Asalanka have been brought in. Bairstow knows the league well and if he can click with Rohit Sharma early on, MI could be in business. Jacks missing out also means a likely shift for Tilak Varma, who’s expected to move up to number three—his natural slot. He’s spent most of the season down at five, where he hasn’t really looked settled. A move back up could help him find his rhythm. One area where Mumbai have come alive is the middle-order. Suryakumar Yadav’s been a rampaging force—640 runs from 14 matches at an average north of 70 and a strike rate around 170. His last two innings—57 off 29 and an unbeaten 73 from 43—suggest he’ll be a real threat to Gujarat in the Eliminator. Lower down, Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir have chipped in at crucial moments.  Weather Conditions Mullanpur, like many pitches across India, offers a good setup for T20s. Batters who take a few deliveries to settle in can cash in later. There’s something in it for the bowlers too—seamers might get early movement with the new ball, and spinners should find some grip through the middle overs. The weather in Chandigarh is expected to be hot and dry. But with no rain on the radar, a full match is on the cards. GT vs MI Pitch Report Teams batting first at Mullanpur in the IPL tend to average around 170. Earlier this season, Punjab Kings put up the highest total at the ground—219 for 6—against Chennai Super Kings, a game they won by 18 runs. The pitch has played well for batters, and that trend should continue. Both sides will likely be aiming for something in the 210 range to feel they’ve given themselves a solid cushion. Toss: To Bat At Mullanpur in IPL 2025, three out of the four games have gone in favor of the side that batted first. Plus, given this is a knockout, choosing to bat first feels like the more reliable option.

GT vs CSK Match Prediction & Analysis Gujarat Titans (GT) take the field against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Match 67 of IPL 2025 this Sunday afternoon in Ahmedabad. Gujarat have already booked their playoff ticket and sit comfortably at the top with 17 points from 13 games. Their target now is to hold onto a top-two finish, which would give them an extra crack at making the final. As for Chennai, their campaign is done—they’re almost certain to finish at the bottom of the table with just 6 points from 13 outings. All they can aim for now is to put together one memorable outing before the curtain falls. Given how dependable and well-rounded Gujarat have looked all season, they’re better placed heading into this fixture. RECENT PERFORMANCE TEAMS PREVIEW Gujarat Titans Preview Gujarat Titans’ hopes of remaining in the top two took a hit with their loss to Lucknow Super Giants. Now, they not only need to win this one, but also need other results to swing their way. That defeat aside, Gujarat have been one of the more reliable sides in IPL 2025, rarely making big mistakes. Even when they’ve lost, they’ve kept things competitive and never completely fallen apart. GT have looked sorted across all departments, the last match being a rare off-day for their bowlers. Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler have all been in top gear at the top of the order, each crossing the 500-run mark for the season. Their consistency has played a big part in Gujarat’s strong run, and at least one of them is always in the game. Down the order, Rutherford has been quietly effective with 267 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 161. And with Shahrukh Khan smashing 59 off 27 in the last game, Gujarat now have another option who can step in if things don’t go right up top. With the ball, Gujarat have kept things tight overall. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna have a combined haul of 36 wickets, and Sai Kishore has chipped in with 16 while going at under 9 per over. These three have been the pillars of GT’s bowling this year. Siraj has made early inroads, while Kishore has kept it tidy through the middle. Rashid’s season has been a bit hit-and-miss, and Kagiso Rabada hasn’t really found his groove since coming back. Chennai Super Kings Preview Chennai Super Kings are staring down their worst-ever IPL finish. With just 6 points from 13 games and a horrible NRR of -1.030, even a win in their final outing is unlikely to lift them off the bottom and get past Rajasthan Royals, who possess a better NRR. That’s uncharted territory for the five-time champs. Still, there are a few bright spots they’ll want to carry forward. Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel have brought some much-needed spark at the top of the order. The young duo plays with an edge and fearlessness that’s injected a bit of life into this struggling batting unit. Dewald Brevis has also been a solid pickup. The 22-year-old from South Africa has hammered 168 runs in five outings for CSK, striking at 164.70. His short but impactful knocks in the middle have given the innings a bit of punch when it’s been needed most. Shivam Dube has been their steadiest contributor with the bat, putting up 340 runs across 13 innings at a strike rate just under 130. But CSK could’ve done with him closing out a few more games – his inability to do that has cost them. Their bowling, meanwhile, has been all over the place. Khaleel Ahmed’s done a fair job, taking 14 wickets in 13 matches with an economy rate of 9.84. Noor Ahmad has been the most reliable, though, with 21 wickets in 13 innings at 8.41. The rest haven’t done much. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja haven’t kept runs down or picked up breakthroughs, while Matheesha Pathirana, despite taking wickets, has been leaking far too many runs. Weather Conditions The pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium has been great for T20 cricket – it’s a solid surface for batters, but there’s also enough in it for fast bowlers and those who rely on slower deliveries. Scoring tends to slow down in the second half as the pitch begins to lose a bit of pace, but overall, it remains a good place for batting. Expect hot and dry conditions in Ahmedabad, with no rain on the radar. GT vs CSK Pitch Report The average first innings score at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, is 178. In the previous match played at the venue, Lucknow Super Giants blasted 235-2 on the board against Gujarat Titans – the highest total here in this IPL. In this match, expect both teams to target a first innings score of around 200-210 runs to feel safe about their chances. Toss: To Bat Teams batting first have come out on top in five of the six IPL 2025 games held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. That pattern could push both captains to take the same approach in this match.

Updated IPL 2025 Points Table After Lucknow Super Giants Beat Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans messed up on a golden opportunity to seal a top two spot in the league table as Lucknow Super Giants earned a consolation 33-run victory riding on Mitchell Marsh’s maiden hundred in the Indian Premier League on Thursday. Batting first, Marsh’s brilliant 117 off 64 balls took LSG to 235 for 2 after stipulated 20 overs. The total was commanding and LSG did well enough to keep the home team at bay, restricting them to 202 for 9 in 20 overs. New Zealander Will O’Rourke, who has come in as Mayank Yadav’s replacement, was the pick of the bowlers for LSG with figures of 3 for 27. GT remained top with 18 points from 13 matches, while the already eliminated LSG moved to sixth from seventh. They have 12 points from 13 matches. Shahrukh Khan (57 off 29 balls) did give LSG a scare with some lusty blows but that was never going to be enough in the end despite a riveting 86-run stand with Sherfane Rutherford for the fourth wicket in just 6.4 overs. GT, who have already qualified for the playoffs, could have taken a giant leap towards top two finish by ensuring 20 points. They will now try to win the last match and give themselves the best chance to finish in top two of the league table with both Pujab Kings and RCB also having a fair shot at the pole position. The chase of 236 started in earnest with B Sai Sudharsan (21 off 16 balls) and skipper Shubman Gill (35 off 20 balls) starting the innings with some crisp boundaries. However, the league’s current top run accumulator, Sudharsan couldn’t convert the start and Gill despite his short arm pulls was also snapped brilliantly by Abdul Samad. It was Jos Buttler (33 off 18 balls) who hit a couple of sixes but left-arm fast bowler Akash Singh, who split the webbing of his right hand, took pace off a floating delivery that breached the Englishman’s defence. At this point that Shahrukh and Rutherford (38) joined forces and the target that looked improbable till then suddenly started looking gettable. The LSG bowlers, especially India Test specialist Akash Deep and his state team colleague Shahbaz Ahmed leaked runs. LSG’s ground fielding also was not up to the mark. Shahrukh, who has a reputation in domestic cricket for Tamil Nadu, over the years haven’t been able to transform his potential into significant knocks. However on the day, he held his shape and punished pacers and spinners alike but the target was too much in the end. In the first innings, it was Marsh’s maiden IPL century which came a trifle late but became the cornerstone of LSG’s imposing score. Marsh, who has already scored five half centuries this season, was slow off the blocks but then muscled the Titans bowlers with great gusto as he hit 10 fours and as many as eight maximums in his 64-ball-117. As it has been a familiar story this season, LSG looked a different batting unit with their top three batters in Marsh, Aiden Markram (36 off 24 balls) and the mercurial Nicholas Pooran (56 not out off 27 balls) belting the Titans bowling unit clad in lavender jerseys. Pooran’s fifth half century of the season came in just 23 balls. Marsh and Markram added 91 for the opening stand in the front 10 and with Pooran, the ‘Bison’ added another 121 runs for the second wicket in just 8.3 overs to beef up their team total. In all LSG batters hit 17 sixes, which is their highest in an IPL match. The best part about Marsh’s hits was using his long levers to hit both straight and square off the wicket. After completing his hundred, the disdain with which he dispatched a hard length delivery from Purple Cap holder Prasidh Krishna into the deep mid-wicket stands was an absolute treat. If that was not enough, Marsh’s eighth six came off the very next delivery as he made room shuffling slightly towards leg-stump and lofted Prasidh down the ground. Marsh’s century came off 56 balls and he was exceptionally severe on left-arm spinner R Sai KIshore, who has otherwise, been parsimonious in this tournament. IPL 2025: Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill show Delhi Capitals what they have been missing this season | Cricket News

Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan being congratulated by Delhi Capitals’ KL Rahul (PTI Photo) NEW DELHI: KL Rahul did much of the heavy-lifting for Delhi Capitals as they batted first against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday evening. During his 60-ball century, and eventual 112* from 65 balls, he ticked plenty of boxes in an effortless knock which took DC to 199 runs, their biggest total at this venue in IPL 2025.While playing 65 balls (the most by a batter this IPL season), he pocketed numerous milestones along the way as well: fastest Indian to 8000 T20 runs, fourth on the list of most centurions in IPL history, joint-third in the list of most centuries by Indians in T20s.His innings was stupendously paced as well. In his first 20 balls, he scored 25 runs. In the next 20 balls each he scored 38 and 39 runs, respectively. The last five balls fetched 10 runs. As far as pacing an innings in a T20 is concerned, this was template stuff. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!And this was the plan all along as DC moved KL Rahul to top of the order. Having tried multiple combinations with none of them proving fruitful, the franchise rolled the dice again. And again, it didn’t work out. Faf du Plessis fell for 5 after a laboured start, producing an opening stand of just 16 runs. But it allowed KL Rahul more time to get settled before going into the attacking mode, which saw 14 fours and four sixes. Except, it wasn’t enough — by a long margin. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill showed what DC have been missing all this season — a set pair to open the innings. The pairing collected their seventh 50-plus stand for the first wicket in IPL 2025. And when they crossed the 100-run mark without much of a fuss, it was their seventh in IPL history. As the score ticked to 158 runs, the records just became harsh on DC, as it was the highest opening stand against them. Not long after, Sudharsan, fittingly, got the job done with a six. The manner of the result was also duly appropriate. Half-tracker outside off by Vipraj Nigam, Sudharsan went on the back foot and pulled well over long-on. Six and Gujarat Titans had earned themselves a 10-wicket win and a place in the playoffs. Well, themselves and Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings as well. The maximum to close the match out was the 11th six of the GT innings, which coupled with the 15 fours, meant 126 of the 205 runs that GT scored came in boundaries or 61.46%. Sudharsan’s 108 from 61 balls and Gill’s 93 from 53 balls were laden with boundaries, yet there was little risk involved. Where Gill controlled 82% of his shots, Sudharsan was on 85% on that metric. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep 5: Shane Watson on how IPL gave him a lifeline & his tribute to Phil Hughes “We’ve batted and played really well throughout, going into the playoffs is a reward for how well we’ve done. Openers play low-risk cricket, still they have the ability to hit down the ground and find boundaries. The fours they hit during the game, especially. They know their game, they put a lot of work in strengthening their basics which shows,” said GT assistant coach Parthiv Patel after the win.“Opening pair is about chemistry and knowing each other’s games wel,l which they do,” he added. On the eve of the match, Parthiv had stressed on looking at the glass-half-full with their batting, suggesting he was focused on the top order doing the job for them. And on Sunday, that glass just got a bit fuller. Get IPL 2025 match schedules, squads, points table, and live scores for CSK, MI, RCB, KKR, SRH, LSG, DC, GT, PBKS, and RR. DC vs GT Match Prediction & Analysis Delhi Capitals (DC) take on Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 60 of IPL 2025 this Sunday in Delhi. DC have picked up six wins from 11 games and currently hold fifth place with 13 points. Gujarat, on the other hand, lead the standings with 16 points from 11 matches and are all but certain to reach the playoffs. A loss here could put Delhi in a tight spot. Gujarat have been in solid form and carry more momentum heading into this one, which gives them the advantage in what’s expected to be a tough contest. RECENT PERFORMANCE TEAMS PREVIEW Delhi Capitals Preview Delhi Capitals are still in the race for the playoffs—six wins, four losses, sitting fifth at the moment. They opened strong this season, taking five wins from their first six, but it’s been a rough stretch since, with just one win in the last five games. At 12 points from 11 matches, they’re in a tight spot now. Another slip-up could really hurt their chances, so this one’s got added pressure. The timing isn’t ideal either. There’s still no word on whether Faf du Plessis will be back after the break. Tristan Stubbs, however, will be back for the rest of the league phase. If Faf remains out, it’ll fall on the Indian players to push the team forward. KL Rahul will need to be at the front of that effort. He’s been calm but assertive—381 runs from nine innings at a strike rate of 142.16. Abishek Porel has done well at the top too, piling up 265 runs in 11 games with a strike rate of 150. Axar Patel has stepped in when needed, especially during wobbling middle overs, adding runs that helped settle things. He, along with Stubb,s will be crucial from overs 10-20. Ashutosh Sharma has chipped in late, hitting quick runs to keep the innings moving when the pressure’s been on. Gujarat Titans Preview Gujarat Titans have been one of the steadiest sides in IPL 2025, collecting 16 points from 11 games to sit at the top of the table. With a playoff spot nearly in the bag, they’ll be aiming to lock in a top-two finish to get two chances at making the final. While the one-week suspension caused overseas player issues for several teams, Gujarat haven’t had much to worry about. Jos Buttler and Gerald Coetzee were the only ones who left India after the pause, and both are expected back before the next game. Rashid Khan, Sherfane Rutherford, Kagiso Rabada, and Karim Janat stayed back with the team during the break. GT look balanced across departments, and both units are firing smoothly. At the top, Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, and Jos Buttler have been piling on the runs, each going past 500 for the season. The form of this trio has been a huge factor in Gujarat’s dominance, and there’s no doubt they’ll be central again. In the middle, Rutherford has quietly put together 229 runs in eight knocks at a strike rate of 159. Rahul Tewatia, as usual, has chipped in during the final stretch of innings with his handy cameos. The bowlers have kept their end of the bargain, too. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna have taken 35 wickets between them, and Sai Kishore has picked up 14 while maintaining control with an economy of 8.37. In a further boost to the team, Kagiso Rabada is all set to be back for GT for the remaining league games. The South African speedster’s presence will further bolster an already strong bowling unit. Rashid Khan is also beginning to find his rhythm again. If the pitch suits them, this bowling unit could make an impact once more. Weather Conditions The surface at Arun Jaitley Stadium is generally flat and settles well once the lights come on. It’s a ground where batters can trust the bounce and get good reward for timing, especially with shots played square. Spinners may find a bit of help later in the game, but it’s usually nothing major, so expect the bat to have the upper hand. Delhi’s weather will be warm and sticky, but there’s no rain in the forecast. The average first innings score at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium sits at 170. The highest total recorded at the venue in IPL 2025 is 205-5 by Mumbai Indians against the home side, a game they won by 12 runs. Expect another high-scoring game with both teams targeting a total of over 200 to feel confident. Toss: To Bat Three of the four matches played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in IPL 2025 have been won by the team batting first. Going by these numbers, it’s clear that batting first is advantageous on this venue.
