Former India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja believes Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowlers have started to click together to take their side “off the ventilator” but the team still remains “in the ICU” following their nervy win over Gujarat Titans. RCB got over the line with four wickets and 38 balls in hand chasing a paltry 148 against GT on Saturday, a win which was set up by the bowlers. Faf du Plessis (64) and Virat Kohli (42) shared 92 runs inside the powerplay but RCB lost wickets in a heap — slipping from 92/0 to 117/6 — to give Gujarat a real hope of pulling off an unlikely win. “The chinks in the armour are visible, what happened at the end. But the chance is there. They’re off the ventilator but they’re still in the ICU,” Jadeja told Jio Cinema. “We are excited about today’s match after seeing Virat and Faf bat. But the real work that was done, was by the bowlers, an aspect RCB has historically struggled at. “The bowling department has started to click for them now, and we’re talking about the business end of the season, this is the point where realistic chances of winning comes from momentum….” Jadeja said RCB may have got the momentum after their win which took them to the seventh spot in the IPL points table, but qualifying for the playoffs remains a “very tough ask”. “More than momentum, it’s about the mentality of the team where you know if you’re in a bad situation, someone will take you out of it… Today, it seemed like RCB picked the right road while Gujarat was on the other side. Who will reach their goal? It’s a very tough ask still,” he said. The former India cricketer, however, was impressed with RCB’s aggressive approach with the bat in a small chase. “They came into the game differently from the start. I haven’t checked the statistics, but I have never seen them start a game with a six. Not one, but two of them, in the first over, when there was no need,” he said. “What Faf did, he was operating at a different pace. The iconic batter, on live TV, went on an angry rant ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between RCB and Gujarat Titans on Saturday. Gavaskar, launching a scathing attack at Kohli, asked why those who continue to stay away from what’s said and written on social media are reacting to ‘outside noise’. Kohli didn’t mince his words as he questioned those ‘sitting inside the box’ about how many games they’ve won for their country. But, Gavaskar wasn’t happy seeing the RCB star turning the tables and putting the commentators in the line of fire. Thought I might not be able to play today but I really wanted to play so it was great that I was able to,” Siraj said after the match. While he wasn’t well, in his mind, he had envisaged how he would bowl that perfectly pitched up delivery which will grow big on the batter and there couldn’t have been a better execution against Wriddhiman, who didn’t have the technique to handle such a ball. “When I woke up in the morning, I thought I won’t be able to play and that I should take rest. When I woke up, I manifested what I wanted to do and that’s exactly what happened,” Siraj said. RCB skipper Faf du Plessis seemed happy to have won three back-to-back matches. “Been really good last couple of games, the way we’ve played with bat and ball. We have been unbelievable on the field. Something around 180-90 would have been a good score,” Du Plessis said. Du Plessis’s 63 off 24 balls with 10 fours and three sixes went a long way in ensuring that RCB climbed to the seventh spot by finishing the game in little under 14 overs. “Probably not the best but you’re trying to be positive, get your net run-rate up. It makes sense from that point of view but it gets to the point when you need to show a bit of calmness and composure – probably around four down, so some lessons to be learned from that.” Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill said that his team now only can focus on winning their remaining games and control the controllables “It depends on the wicket. First couple of overs you get a good idea and play according to that. I think 170-80 on this wicket would have been a good total. How we batted in the powerplay, and how they bowled, decided the game,” he said. “We would have had one extra bowler but losing three wickets in the powerplay (changed planning). With more than 50 games done in IPL 2024, no team has qualified for the playoffs and – no team is out of the race yet. Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) playoff chances are hanging by a thread after Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Rajasthan Royals by one run on Thursday. Furthermore, MI have continued their dismal IPL 2024 campaign after suffering a 24-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday at home. After their eighth loss in 11 games, the five-time champions MI are now on the brink of elimination. The Hardik Pandya-led outfit will need plenty of results to go their way to finish in the top four. Meanwhile, MI’s heartbreaking loss has brought some confidence into the RCB camp considering Mumbai can go up to a maximum of 12 points if they win their remaining three matches, which is daunting. Remaining fixtures of MI May 6: vs SRH, Wankhede Stadium May 11: vs KKR, Eden Gardens May 17: vs LSG, Wankhede Stadium Mathematically, MI are not eliminated from the competition yet and also have an outside chance of qualifying. First things first, Mumbai need to win all their remaining fixtures to stay in the hunt. RR and KKR are already placed at the top with 16 and 14 points respectively and are far from MI’s reach. Technically, MI would need RR and KKR to win all their remaining fixtures to make way for them. The winner of the SRH v LSG clash on May 8 will move to 14 points from the current 12. The winner of the SRH vs LSG game will need to win their remaining three matches and get at least 16 points. The winner of this fixture will also need to win their remaining three fixtures. Whereas, the loser of the game should also lose their next three fixtures and end their season with 12 points. Lastly, none of the teams residing outside of the top four should go past 12 points. In such a scenario, Mumbai might get tied with the other five teams at 12 points each and would need a significant NRR boost to climb up the ladder and seal the fourth spot on the standings. RCB, on the other hand, are currently reeling at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table with only three wins out of 10 games. However, they have looked in a better position than MI after winning two consecutive away games against SRH and GT. Despite early setbacks this season, RCB still have a mathematical chance to make the playoffs. Their recovery work begins at home against a struggling GT on Saturday and RCB would need to make the most out of the game. Remaining fixtures of RCB May 4: vs GT, Bengaluru May 9: vs PBKS, Dharamsala May 12: vs DC, Bengaluru May 18: vs CSK, Bengaluru Like any other side, who are placed in the bottom half of the points table, RCB also need to win their remaining four fixtures and hopefully, they will make use of the home advantage with three more fixtures to be played at Chinnaswamy. However, for RCB to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs, the simple math is to back the top three (RR, KKR, and either one of SRH/ LSG) to win as many games as possible while the next six sides above them lose just as many so that RCB can finish above them in the standings. Here are a few of the possible ways in which this can be achieved. RCB would want the winner of the SRH v LSG clash on May 8 to win all their remaining matches to cement their spot at three at least. They also want the loser of the SRH vs LSG game to lose their next three fixtures and get stuck on 12 points. MI should win no more than two out of their remaining four league games. GT and PBKS should win no more than two of their remaining four league games. CSK and DC should win no more than one of their remaining league games. RR and KKR should win at least three of their remaining four league games. To sum up, RCB must hope that all the above permutations go their way with the six teams above them suffering heavy defeats while the Royal Challengers themselves must earn handsome wins to grab the fourth spot for IPL 2024 playoffs qualification. In their previous clash, GT posted a total of 200/3 in 20 overs, which was easily chased down by RCB in just 16 overs. Ahead of the match in Bengaluru, GT skipper Shubman Gill reached the practice ground, where he met RCB star Virat Kohli and the duo gave an adorable moment to the fans. The meeting happened a couple of days after BCCI announced the T20 World CUp squas. Shubman Gill has been named in the reserves while Kohli is part of the squad. His tally includes one century and four half-centuries. On the other hand, Gill is having a mediocre outing with the bat as he has managed to fetch 320 runs in 10 matches. His strike rate is 140.97 while his batting average is 35.56. Apart from IPL, Kohli has been named in India’s 15-member squad for T20 World Cup 2024. However, Gill has failed to earn a spot as the selectors have named skipper Rohit Sharma and young Yashasvi Jaiswal as the two openers for the marquee event. Gill has been named in the reserves, along with Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan. All-rounder Hardik Pandya returned to international cricket and will be serving as Rohit’s deputy at the World Cup.
