Bravery, personality, aggression: What new boss Vincent Kompany wants from Bayern Munich players

New Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany wants his side to be brave on the ball, have personality and be aggressive after his appointment was confirmed on May 29. Kompany’s appointment ended a long search for Bayern, who were looking to replace Thomas Tuchel after the German had left the club at the end of last season. Kompany was a surprise apppointment as he had faced relegation with Burnley in the Premier League during the 2023/24 season. Speaking at the press conference after his appointment, Kompany said that he wants the side to be absolutely brave and aggressive when they have the ball and he wants them to carry it throughout the game as well. “I want the players of Bayern to be really brave on the ball, to have personality. I want the team to be aggressive, to represent those two things,” Kompany said. “Absolutely brave when they have the ball and make a decision and absolutely aggressive, something they carry every minute of the game. Always,” said Kompany. What Kompany will give Bayern? Kompany said that he will keep things simple as a coach and he wants to just give everything to win in the end. “For my side it is simple. What you coach is who you are as a person,” Kompany told a news conference on Thursday. “My personality is I grew I grew up on the streets of Brussels, I was in the academy of Anderlecht where from the age of six to 20 you have to win everything.” Kompany said that he will bring in a clear vision to the team and will implement it. “I coached one of the youngest teams in Belgium and one of the smallest teams in England. What I bring to the table are things that will help the players to improve. I have a clear vision and will also implement it here in Germany,” said Kompany. The Belgian’s immediate aim next season will be to ensure Bayern get back to winning the Bundesliga after they relinquished the title to Bayer Leverkusen in the last campaign. The German giants suffered one of their worst seasons in the Bundesliga in 2023-24 and are set to revive their form with a new coach for the 2024-25 season. Kompany’s appointment came as a shock as the Belgian suffered an embarrassing relegation with Burnley in the English Premier League. Burnley managed to win just five matches in 38 games this season to finish 19th in the points table.  The former Manchester City and Belgium captain will replace Thomas Tuchel at Allianz Arena. According to an ESPN report, Kompany has penned a three-year contract with 33-time Bundesliga winners in a total deal of $12.7 million.  “We’re delighted to have brought in Vincent Kompany to FC Bayern,” Max Eberl, Bayern’s sporting director said. “We were immediately on the same page in our discussions with him. He clearly showed us how much the job at FC Bayern appeals to him and that he is keen to take it on. Vincent Kompany is hungry and brings everything to the table: as a player, he was already a leading figure in top international football and is also leading the way as a coach.” The Bavarian club decided to part ways with Thomas Tuchel in February this year as they suffered a dreadful 2023-24 season. Bayern’s nine-season winning streak ended as they finished third in the Bundesliga points table with 23 wins in 34 matches, 18 points behind new champions Bayer Leverkusen who went unbeaten.  Bayern Munich ended their 2023-24 season with a shock 4-2 away defeat against Hoffenheim and were knocked out by Real Madrid in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League. Bayern were left embarrassed by the third-tier side FC Saarbrucken in the second round of the German Cup in November last year.

Ralf Rangnick, Bayern Munich talks fall down, coach to remain with Austria after Euro 2024

Austria national team boss Ralf Rangnick will not take over Bayern Munich next season but will remain in his current role after this summer’s Euro 2024, the coach and the Austrian Football Association said on Thursday. Rangnick confirmed last week that Bayern had been in touch in their search for a successor to departing Thomas Tuchel, and German media had reported a deal was imminent. “I am national team coach of Austria with all my heart. This task brings me a lot of joy and I am determined to continue down the road we have started,” Rangnick said in an Austrian FA statement. “I want to clearly stress that this is not a rejection of Bayern Munich but rather a decision for my team and our common goals.” “We are fully focused on the Euro. We will do everything we can to go far.” The 65-year-old Rangnick, who has coached Manchester United and RB Leipzig among others, looked to be top of the list for the Bavarians, after Julian Nagelsmann had also decided to stay with the German national team. Bayern, who had won the previous 11 league titles, missed out on this season’s Bundesliga trophy with Bayer Leverkusen securing their first ever league crown five matches before the end of the season last month. They drew 2-2 at home against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Tuesday but Tuchel will leave at the end of the campaign irrespective of their run in Europe. Austria face France in their opening Euro 2024 Group D match on June 17 and also play Poland and the Netherlands with the tournament being held in Germany.
