Ricky Ponting predicts these two players as leading wicket-taker and run-getter in T20 World Cup | Cricket News

Ricky Ponting predicts these two players as leading wicket-taker and run-getter in T20 World Cup | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has predicted India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and Aussie batting sensation Travis Head to emerge as the leading wicket-taker and run-getter, respectively, in the upcoming T20 World Cup.Ponting, renowned for his cricketing acumen, believes Bumrah’s exceptional pace and skill in delivering crucial breakthroughs will make him the tournament’s top wicket-taker.On the batting front, he expects Head’s aggressive and consistent performances to earn him the most runs. Both players have shown remarkable prowess in T20 cricket, and Ponting’s prediction underscores their potential to shine on the world stage, setting high expectations for their contributions in the tournament.Bumrah is coming off a sensational IPL season, where he took 20 wickets in 13 games and maintained an impressive economy rate of 6.48, despite the high-scoring nature of the tournament.β€œMy leading wicket-taker for the tournament will be Jasprit Bumrah,” Ponting told The ICC Review.β€œI just think an outstanding performer, contributor for a number of years now. He’s just come off an outstanding IPL.β€œWhat he can do with the new ball, he swings the new ball, he has the seam up. But at the end, his economy rate at the end of the IPL was less than seven runs an over.β€œHe takes wickets. He does bowl a lot of the hard overs too. When you bowl the hard overs in T20 cricket, it gives you a chance to pick up a lot of wickets along the way. So, I’m going with him,” added Ponting.Ponting selected fellow Australian Head as his pick for the top run-scorer in the upcoming tournament.β€œMy prediction for the leading run-scorer will be Travis Head,” Ponting said.β€œI just think everything he’s done, whether it be red-ball or white-ball in the last couple of years, has been of the highest quality. I think he’s playing fearless cricket at the moment.”Head suffered an injury at the beginning of the ICC World Cup last year. However, Australia‘s belief in his abilities was so strong that they kept him with the squad until he recovered. In his return match against New Zealand during the tournament, Head repaid the team’s trust with a blistering century. He concluded the World Cup with an impressive record, scoring two hundreds and a fifty, maintaining an average above 50, and striking at a remarkable rate of 127.52.Head’s exceptional form persisted in the current IPL 2024 season, where he played a crucial role as an opener in Sunrisers Hyderabad’s journey to the final. Throughout the tournament, he amassed 567 runs in 15 matches, maintaining an extraordinary strike rate of 191.55.Despite Head’s underwhelming conclusion to the IPL season, Ponting anticipates that he will continue to display his explosive batting prowess during the upcoming matches in the Caribbean and the United States.β€œHis IPL had its ups and downs, but when it’s been good, it’s been very good. And it has won games of cricket for his team,” Ponting noted.β€œAnd it’ll be exactly the same for Australia. So, look, he might not be the most consistent on the way through this tournament, but he’ll be right up there, I’m sure, with the leading run scorers. And as I’ve said, if he spends any amount of time at the wicket for Australia, he’ll win more games than ever,” Ponting concluded. The T20 World Cup 2024 will begin on June 1 in the West Indies and USA.

Veteran Spinner Ignores India For T20 World Cup Final, Says It Will Be Pakistan vs…

Veteran Australian cricket team spinner Nathan Lyon ignored India while choosing the finalists for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 and said that he expects a summit clash between Australia and Pakistan. In a recent video, Lyon was asked to predict the two sides who may end up playing each other in the final of the competition and he said that his first choice is obviously Australia. He admitted that he was biased in the answer and added that he thinks Australia will face Pakistan. He picked Pakistan because he believes their spinners will have a good show in the tournament and he even namedropped star batter Babar Azam. β€œFor the T20 finals team, Australia obviously because I’m quite biased towards them. I think it will be I’m going to go with Pakistan. In those conditions, quality spin bowlers, but also electric batters like Babar Azam,” said Lyon in a video shared by Prime Video Sports Australia. Lyon further predicted that this year’s tournament may see a team getting the highest total in T20I history and also backed Australia T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh to have a brilliant tournament. β€œI think early on in the tournament we may see the highest score in T20. Australia coach Andrew McDonald backs captain Mitchell Marsh to be fit ahead of T20 World Cup

Australia coach Andrew McDonald backs captain Mitchell Marsh to be fit ahead of T20 World Cup

Australia coach Andrew McDonald has backed captain Mitchell Marsh to be back to full fitness before the start of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Marsh was pulled out of the IPL early last month due to a hamstring rupture, and his recovery has been far slower than planned since returning from India. Marsh joined a cohort of Australia’s squad members, not engaged in the IPL, for the initial three-day pre-tournament training camp in Brisbane. Another such camp is scheduled over the next two weeks before the squad leaves for the Caribbean on May 25th. Initially, Marsh wasn’t slated to attend the first camp due to his hamstring injury. However, his recovery allowed him to participate and bat in the nets over the last couple of days. Nonetheless, McDonald reiterated that Marsh’s bowling fitness would only be nearing completion closer to the tournament. “You probably won’t see him bowl in the next couple of weeks here,” McDonald told reporters at Allan Border Field on Tuesday. “It’ll probably happen the week before we leave. And then he’ll be able to ramp that up when we’re over there. We’ll be able to cherry-pick the moments during the tournament where he’ll be useful with the ball. We’ve got some all-round depth in the squad, which gives us good coverage anyway. “[His recovery was] probably a little slower than expected on the back of the hamstring. But we’ve got plenty of time now that he has been ruled out the IPL. The first game is just short of a month away now. So ample time for him to get ready. But really positive to see the skipper on the park.” McDonald said there was no concern about Marsh’s lack of match practice over the last two months, given that Australia will play some practice games before their debut match against Oman. “No real concern about match fitness,” McDonald said. “We’ve got a couple of practice games when we get to Trinidad in the support period. So he’ll likely get plenty of match opportunities. And if not, we’ll be able to simulate those through practice, which our coaching staff are pretty good at.” Published By: Saurabh Kumar Published On: May 7, 2024

Mitchell Marsh Gives Update On His Recovery From Hamstring

Mitchell Marsh Gives Update On His Recovery From Hamstring

Australia’s new men’s T20I captain Mitchell Marsh said he hopes to get things right in the next three weeks to recover from hamstring injury and achieve full fitness to be ready in time for the World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, when Australia play their first game against Oman on June 6 in Barbados. Marsh has been out of action since April 3 clash for Delhi Capitals due to a right hamstring strain. He flew back home to Perth from IPL 2024 in India to begin his recovery, with Cricket Australia taking charge of it. Eventually, Marsh was ruled out of DC’s campaign, with them drafting Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib as his replacement. “If we had to play tomorrow, I’d be in a bit of trouble. Still a couple of weeks away (from full fitness). The timing probably sits perfectly, barring no setbacks. I’ll be on the plane, ready to go.” “The hammy is good, it’s coming along really well. It’s pretty much exactly where we want it to be. It’s one of those things. Just got to get it right over the next three weeks and get on the plane,” said Marsh to reporters in Perth on Thursday. The 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup will be Marsh’s first full-time event as Australia’s skipper in the shortest format, after holding the position in an interim capacity. “Just really proud. It’s not every day you get to captain Australia and lead them to a World Cup. That’s very exciting. But I think one of the best things about our team is that there’s a lot of great leaders in our group.” “One of the biggest things I’ve learned is to not change too much. There’s a lot of preparation and planning that goes into a World Cup, and that’ll happen over the next month. But once we get there, it’s keeping everything nice and relaxed, keeping the environment good, and making sure we go out there and give it our all,” he added. Marsh also revealed he’s in constant communication with ODI and Test skipper Pat Cummins, who captained Australia to World Test Championship and ODI World Cup triumphs last year. For the T20 World Cup, Cummins will be playing under Marsh’s captaincy. “We’re always in communication as mates and, I guess, as leaders. But no real conversations around the cricket side of things, just always checking in on each other. We’re great mates so I’m looking forward to working with him over the next period of time.” Marsh signed off by backing the veteran David Warner to come good in Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign in what will also be his event as an international cricketer after retiring from Tests and ODIs earlier this year. Warner is currently recovering from a hand injury while batting in DC’s match against Lucknow Super Giants on April 12. Though he played in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 20, Warner has been out of action since then. “It’s been a long last hurrah, hasn’t it for Davey? We’re always really excited to have him in the team. Just the experience that he brings.” “I think if we look back at his career. There’s been so many big moments that you need your big experienced players to stand up and Davey has always been one of those. So we’re lucky to have him.” (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.) Topics mentioned in this article

‘The carrot’s there…’: Mitchell Marsh on leading Australia to an incredible treble | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Mitchell Marsh, who will lead Australia in their quest for an unprecedented treble of major global titles in the T20 World Cup in June, takes great pride in being the team’s captain. With the squad announced on Wednesday, Marsh was officially named captain, capping an incredible recovery for the reserved all-rounder since his recall in the Ashes last season.Leading the squad to series victories over New Zealand and the co-hosts of the Twenty20 World Cup, the West Indies, the 32-year-old has already proven to be a popular and effective captain. His easygoing style fits in well with an Australian team that has accomplished remarkable things since losing fiery head coach Justin Langer.Marsh claimed that his leadership will not significantly alter despite the selectors’ faith in him.“One of the biggest things I’ve learnt is to not change too much,” he told reporters on Wednesday.“Obviously, there’s a lot of preparation and planning that goes into a World Cup and that’ll happen over the next month.“But once we get there it’s (about) keeping everything nice and relaxed, keeping the environment good.”As a result of his outstanding performances in the Ashes and Australia’s sixth one-day World Cup victory in India last year, Marsh was awarded Australia’s highest cricket accolade in January-the Allan Border medal. With another victory in the United States and the Caribbean, Australia hopes to make history once more by becoming the first country to hold the worldwide T20, one-day, and Test championships simultaneously.Despite being lighthearted during the news conference on Wednesday, Marsh donned a somber captain’s hat in response to a question regarding the triple bid.“It’s not something we necessarily focus on as a group,” he said.“It would never have been done before so that will be special but there’s so many things you’ve got to get through at a World Cup before you can even get a crack at that.“That’s probably for the external noise … but I guess the carrot’s there.”(With Reuters inputs)

He has done well for the team in the most adverse conditions. He gets runs at a brisk pace thus the opposition is always under pressure when he is at the crease. Back him as top batter for Australia as Head is due for a big score. Nathan Lyon has been brilliant for Australia and bagged a 10 wicket haul in last game. Back him as top bowler.Kane Williamson will have to come good if New Zealand have to make a comeback into the series. Williamson scored three hundreds against South Africa so he is in great form. Also, Tim Southee will be keen to make an impact in his 100th Test. Back him as top bowler. The conditions will be helpful for bowlers thus scoring a hundred won’t be easy. We predict no hundreds to be scored in the match. New Zealand vs Australia TV channels: The fans can watch the match live on Hotstar Live Streaming: Live streaming of the match will be available on the FAFA191 Cricket Exchange India and website. NZ vs AUS 2nd Test Match Prediction & Betting Tips New Zealand will take on Australia in the 2nd and final Test on March 08. The match will be played at Hagley Oval, Christchurch and will start at 3:30 AM IST. New Zealand were no match to the mighty Australians in the first Test as they got hammered by the visitors by 172 runs. There weren’t many positives for New Zealand barring Glenn Phillips who scored 71 runs in the first innings and bagged a five wicket haul in Australia’s second innings. If New Zealand have to give a fight to the Aussies, the top order needs to score runs. Australia too have their fair share of batting woes. Cameron Green scored a magnificent 174 in the innings but other than him, there was no major contribution from other batters. Australia will be aware that batters need to put runs on the board to keep New Zealand at bay. If the batting falters again, Australia will give New Zealand a chance to make a comeback into the series. NZ vs AUS Match Toss PredictionCaptain winning the toss should bat first and put runs on the board. The conditions will stay the same for the first three days thus runs on board will help. NZ vs AUS Pitch ReportThe pitch will help the bowlers throughout the game. The new ball will swing and keep the batters on toes. On Day 4 and 5, spinners will come into play. Christchurch Weather ReportThe weather will be clear for the first two days but there is rain predicted on the final three days of the test match.
