Gautam Gambhir regrets infamous ‘aggressive’ acts in his IPL career: ‘I’ve done some things I shouldn’t have done’

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir made some honest admissions while recalling his time as captain in the Indian Premier League. Gambhir led Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) and Kolkata Knight Riders in the cash-rich league and won the two titles leading the Purple and Golden outfit. The former Indian star was known for his aggressive leadership and leading his team from the front. Gautam Gambhir led KKR to two IPL titles as captain.(PTI) Gambhir never shied away from arguing with opposition players and was involved in a few heated altercations, including one with Virat Kohli, which grabbed the limelight. The 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI WC finals hero reminisced his time as captain and admitted that he did some things during his career which some things he shouldn’t have done. “Sometimes you need to have an aggressive approach as a leader if you want your team to be aggressive. Sometimes you need to do things you didn’t want to. When I look back at my career, I have done some things I shouldn’t have done. But I believed if I didn’t get aggressive and didn’t lead by example, my team won’t play aggressively,” Gambhir told Sportskeeda. The two-time IPL-winning skipper further asserted that a player should be judged only for his on-the-field activities or behaviour, but everyone should keep in mind the player’s off-the-field things too. “I feel every player and every leader has the right to express themselves on the field. A player should not be judged just by how he is on the field, but how he is off it should also be looked at,” he added. Gambhir player for KKR in IPL from 2011 to 2017, which is considered the golden period of the franchise. During this period, the team won the IPL twice, qualified for the playoffs five times, and reached the finals of the Champions League T20 in 2014. He rejoined the franchise ahead of the 2024 edition as the team mentor, and his inclusion in the team management changed their fortunes once again, as KKR are currently sitting at the top of the points table with one foot in the playoffs. In a conversation on Star Sports, KKR co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan expressed his sheer joy at having Gambhir back in the KKR family, and how pivotal he is to the team’s success. “He’s trying to free him up a bit. He’s (Gambhir) been with us for 8 years, and God willing, for the next 20 years. The great thing about Gautam Gambhir being back with us is that I never felt like he left us. You know, there are some friendships that remain intact no matter what. Whether he’s in our team or mentoring someone else, there’s never any animosity or competition with him,” Shah Rukh said.

Why Team India’s T20 World Cup jersey has only one star? Know here

Image Source : X India’s jersey for T20 World Cup 2024. The jersey of the Indian cricket team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 has been launched. The Men in Blue will be donning new gear for the global tournament that will start on June 1 in the USA and West Indies.  The jersey is a lot different than the kit for the previous 20-over World Cup in Australia. The new jersey has a combination of blue and orange colors. While the traditional blue is at the front, orange features on the shoulders with Adidas (kit sponsor) stripes on it. But the jersey has only one star instead of the three usually seen on India’s limited-overs jerseys. Here’s why India’s T20 WC jersey has one star! The stars on India’s jerseys represent the World Cup titles won by the Men in Blue across ODI and T20 formats. While in the limited-overs jersey has three stars, the kit for the T20 World Cup has only one star on it. This is because India have won only one T20 World Cup – way back in 2007 – and have never won it again. That one star is a representation of that trophy. The number of stars represents the number of titles won by the Indian team. Similarly for the ODI World Cup, the Men in Blue have two stars to mark India’s 1983 and 2011 ODI World Cup wins.

Not Hardik Pandya Or Shubman Gill: India Batter, Ignored For T20 World Cup, Was Being Groomed As Next Captain

Indian cricket team in action© AFP Former BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad revealed that Shreyas Iyer was being groomed to become a future Indian cricket team skipper. The batter, who was considered to be a big talent for the national side, missed out on a BCCI central contract after not playing domestic cricket despite not being on national duty. He did play some matches for Mumbai and also produced a couple of good knocks for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 but the batter was once again ignored when the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 was announced. However, Prasad revealed that selectors were earlier impressed with his leadership skills and considered him to be a top contender for India captaincy. “Shreyas Iyer, unlike Hardik Pandya or Ravindra Jadeja has been groomed (as a captain). He has come through a system,” Prasad said on RevSportz. Prasad, who served as the BCCI chief selector between 2016 and 2020, revealed that Shreyas caught their eye while captaining the India A side. “If you go back to the stats, in the last two years, when we were at the helm, Shreyas Iyer led the side (India A). I think out of the 10 series that India A played, we won 8. In the majority of those series, Shreyas led the side. He has been in and around as captain. He has been groomed for that particular slot,” Prasad said. “We felt that post Virat, post Rohit Sharma, you needed someone to lead the side that’s when we started thinking about Shreyas Iyer or Rishabh Pant. But even ahead of Pant, was Iyer as a captain,” he added. Prasad also had his say about Shreyas’ stint as the KKR captain. “He is slowly maturing into a very good leader. It’s very important at the start of your captaincy career to have good team management. That’s what he’s getting from KKR. He is young, and they are going to invest in him. In the next two or three years, we will see Shreyas evolve into a wonderful captain.”

India’s T20 World Cup jersey launched, fans come up with mixed reactions

Team India’s new jersey for the upcoming T20 World Cup to be played in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 has been launched. The launch took place in Dharamsala with captain Rohit Sharma, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja featuring in the video released. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) last year signed Adidas as the kit sponsor of team India for five years and since then, the men in blue have been donning differently designed kits at the mega events. The new jersey specially designed for the T20 World Cup has tri-colour stripes on the V-shaped neck while the sleeves are of saffron colour that also have traditional Adidas stripes on it. The blue colour at the front has been retained as expected with ‘INDIA’ written at the centre. Notably, the name of the sponsor, in this case, ‘Dream11’ will be removed as per the rules that have been set by the ICC when it comes to the World Cups irrespective of the format. Meanwhile, the fans had got a glimpse of the jersey earlier itself with the jersey pictures getting leaked on social media. They had come up with mixed reactions with some calling the jersey ‘stylish’ while a few didn’t like it at all. Here are some of the reactions: As far as the T20 World Cup is concerned, team India will be starting their campaign on June 5 against Ireland in New York. Their marquee clash against Pakistan will be played on June 9 while their last two group games are scheduled on June 12 and 15 against USA and Canada respectively. India squad for T20 World Cup 2024: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Of Redemption And Dreams Coming True: Stories Of India's Olympics-Bound Relay Teams

Of Redemption And Dreams Coming True: Stories Of India’s Olympics-Bound Relay Teams

Redemption, fulfilment of a father’s dream, a big step in a nascent career and justification of choices made early in life — Olympic qualification meant different things to the different members of the 4x400m Indian men’s and women’s relay teams who booked their Paris berths on Monday. Let’s take a look on the eight runners — four men and four women — who finished second in their respective qualifying heats at the World Athletics Relay in Nassau, Bahamas to make the Olympic cut. THE WOMEN’S TEAM: MR Poovamma: For Olympian Poovamma, it’s a redemption of sorts after she faced the ignominy of a two-year ban for a doping offence in 2021 before getting a favourable decision after the intervention of Kerala High Court. The 33-year-old, a multiple medallist in the individual 400m and 4x400m relay race in the 2014 and 2018 Asian Games, returned to action during the Goa National Games last year after serving a two-year ban. “Finally, I can return to action now. The ordeal is over, though it left me mentally distressed,” she had told PTI then. The Arjuna Awardee is one of the most decorated athletes in the country, having won a women’s 4x400m relay gold and 400m individual silver in the 2013 Asian Championships. She went on to win a gold and a bronze in the women’s 4x400m relay and 400m individual event. The Karanataka-born, who married another international athlete from Kerala, also won a gold each in the women’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relay races in the 2018 Asian Games. Rupal Chaudhary: She scripted history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals — silver in women’s 4x400m relay and bronze in the individual 400m — at the World U20 Athletics Championship in 2022 in Colombia. The 19-year-old hails from a family of modest means. Her father is a small farmer in Shahpur Jainpur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district. As the closest stadium to her base — Meerut — does not have suitable synthetic tracks for training, she would endure a two-hour journey to Delhi for two days ever week to train. She became the second Indian to win a medal in the women’s 400m after Hima Das’ historic gold in the 2018 edition of the championships in Finland. Jyothika Dandi Sri: Hyderabad-based Jyothika, who ran the second leg on Monday, took to sports to fulfil the dreams of her father who wanted his daughter to feature in the Olympics. The 23-year-old is quite close to it, though the final selection of the relay team rests in the hands of the Athletics Federation of India. She was part of the Indian women’s 4x400m team that won a bronze in the Asian Championships last year. She won a 400m gold in the National Open Championships in and a silver in Goa National Games last year. Subha Venkatesan: The 24-year-old from Trichy in Tamil Nadu is the daughter of a construction worker and a homemaker and she took to sports on the insistence of her maternal grandfather who works in the police department. Trained initially at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu’s (SDAT) Centre of Chennai, Subha went on to win medals in national meets before she became part of the women’s 4x400m relay team that won a silver in the 2018 Asian Junior Championships. THE MEN’S TEAM Muhammed Anas: The 29-year-old Anas is the most well-known men’s quarter-miler in the country and the national record holder. Already a two-time Olympian, Anas has won medals at the Asian Games, Asian Championships and 2016 he became is only the third Indian quarter-miler (individual 400m) to participate at the Olympics after KM Binu and Milkha Singh. He was a part of the Indian men’s 4x400m and mixed 4x400m relays in Tokyo Olympics. He was also part of the men’s 4x400m team that broke the Asian record in the World Championships last year and won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Anas hails from Nilamel village in Kerala and his father Yahiya was a state-level athlete. Anas has often stated that he became interested in running after seeing Jamaican legend Usain Bolt dashing down the track in the 2008 Olympics. He was a long jump champion at his school, but shifted to track on the advice of coaches. At the 2016 senior nationals, Anas clinched the 400m silver in his first attempt and broke the 46-second barrier at the Indian Grand Prix and Federation Cups that year for the first time. Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi: Born in Palakkad, Kerala, Muhammed Ajmal was a football player just like many youngsters in his state. He participated at the U-19 state level football tournaments until his coach recommended a shift to running. He was a 100m sprinter first and then began competing in 400m. Amoj Jacob: Born in Kerala but brought up in New Delhi, Jacob’s sporting journey began during his time at St. Xavier’s School in Rohini, when his coach suggested that he try becoming a sprinter. The 25-year-old was initially interested in football. His mother is a nurse at a Delhi hospital. He was part of the gold winning 4x400m relay team at the 2017 Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar, besides winning the Hangzhou Asian Games gold in the same event. Arokia Rajiv: Hailing from a village near Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, athletics runs in Arokia’s blood as his father Y Soundararajan was a state level sprinter and long jumper. Arokia’s father Soundararajan was a bus driver while his mother a daily wager. The 32-year-old Armyman was part of the gold-winning 4x400m mixed relay team and he settled for a silver medal in the men’s 4x400m relay at the 2018 Asian Games held in Jakarta. He was part of the Tokyo Olympics 4x400m relay team that broke the then Asian record.
