‘Pat Cummins wanted me to be attacking and aggressive… that suited my batting’: Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma finished with neither the Orange Cap nor with the winner’s trophy in IPL 2024 but in terms of sheer impact, he should have been somewhere near the top. The Amritsar lad, who turned out for SRH, scored 484 runs at a strike-rate of 204.22 this season and that should be more than enough to make the national selectors sit up and take notice. Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder Abhishek Sharma celebrates with Pat Cummins(PTI) The left-handed opener came into the IPL with the disappointment of being dropped for two Ranji Trophy matches by Punjab after helping his state claim their maiden Syed Mustaq Ali T20 Trophy. Abhishek had played a pivotal role in Punjab lifting the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy scoring 485 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 192.46. Just after the IPL season came to an end, the 23-year-old allrounder spoke to HT about his red-hot form in the IPL, his national team dreams, Yuvraj Singh’s support and his rapport with India star Gill. Excerpts How would you describe this IPL season? The IPL 2024 was the best one for me till now. I put in a lot of hard work in the prior domestic season and gained confidence. The confidence I gained while playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy for Punjab helped me set goals and perform well. Also, we reached the IPL final and thoroughly enjoyed playing my shots in the tournament. The Icing on the cake would have been if we had beaten KKR in the final to lift the trophy. How did captain Pat Cummins and the SRH management contribute in getting the best out of you in IPL? From the start of the tournament, the SRH captain Pat Cummins and the management were clear that they wanted an aggressive and attacking approach from the team. The message was clear that SRH had to dominate in every game. This approach suited me and I could go out there and express myself in the middle. I like to dominate when I am batting and that’s what I did. SRH finished runners-up in the IPL and the final turned out to be a one-sided affair. What led to the SRH batting collapse? It would have been great to lift the trophy. Travis Head and I had been batting well as a pair for SRH in previous matches and fortunately giving good starts as well. I think when both of us got out in initial overs to some outstanding bowling from Mitchel Starc and others, the other batters could not put together long partnerships. KKR bowlers bowled amazing balls to get the SRH top-order out. After the top-order collapsed, things fell apart and could not be controlled. Two seasons ago, you were captain of Punjab. Did it deter or discourage you when you were removed from captaincy? How did you take it? I was really grateful to get the Punjab team’s captaincy. These are the things for which we strive to do our best. It helped me grow as a cricketer, take responsibility and also make sure to contribute for the team. I made an effort to create an environment in the team where all could express themselves freely on the ground. I was happy that season as we had qualified for the Ranji Trophy QFs after a gap of 4-5 seasons. When I was removed from the captaincy I did not take it to heart and just marched ahead with a sole aim of doing well for my team. You have given a lot of credit to former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh for how he helped shape up your career. Can you throw some light on how he pushed you when things were not working out for you? Yuvi paaji deserves all the credit for believing in me when the chips were down and I was confident. He told me that I had the potential and the calibre to excel at the highest level and how important it is to keep working hard on skills and fitness. I took it very seriously and just worked on those aspects. Now I understand that a time comes for every cricketer when he unleashes his best form. And one has to keep consistency and momentum in practice and training. After the IPL, there is a lot of talk going on that you are knocking the doors of the Indian team. How do you react to this? Giving good performances is definitely in my hands. Giving my best and focusing on this is in my control. Previously also, I have had a feeling that I could make it to the India team but it did not happen. So, I realised the more we think about it, the more we put ourselves under pressure. If that happens and I get selected in the Indian team, my dream would come true. What is your rapport with Shubman Gill? Do you talk regularly either about cricket or old days? How do you rate him as a cricketer? We have that close connection and bond since our U-12 days. Whenever we meet up or bump into each other during games, we chit-chat about things other than cricket. I am very proud of his achievements. I have seen him toil hard for where he is now. We keep in touch and talk regularly and he is also very positive about my game. Shubman is always there to help me sort out things if I am confused.

Nishant Dev becomes first Indian male boxer to book Paris Olympics ticket | Boxing News

NEW DELHI: Nishant Dev on Friday became the first Indian male boxer to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics by reaching the semifinals of the Boxing Olympic qualifiers in Bangkok.Dev, who had previously missed out on an Olympic berth, defeated Moldova’s Vasile Cebotari in a 5-0 decision in the 71kg quarterfinal, which was a battle between two southpaws.India have now secured four quota places, with women boxers Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preet Pawar (54kg), and Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) already having booked their tickets to Paris. The 71kg weight class had a total of five quotas available. Dev started the bout strongly, landing precise and sharp punches. He maintained his composure and used his punches effectively throughout the fight.Despite Cebotari landing a few blows in the second round and both boxers appearing tired in the final three minutes, Dev continued to land punches consistently. Cebotari was penalized with a point deduction for hitting Dev while he was down on the canvas. In another bout, India’s hopes of securing a quota in the women’s 60kg category were dashed when Ankushita Boro lost 2-3 to Sweden’s Agnes Alexiusson in the quarterfinals. Boro, a former youth world champion, fought valiantly but was ultimately defeated by her more experienced opponent, who is a former European Games bronze medallist. Boro started slowly but adapted towards the end of the first round, using straight jabs effectively. Despite being down 1-4, she came out strong in the second round, utilizing a combination of left jabs and right crosses. The two entered the final round on equal terms, with Boro making early gains, but Alexiusson finished the bout stronger to secure the split decision victory.Arundhati Choudhary (66kg) and Amit Panghal (51kg) are set to compete later in the day.(With PTI inputs)

T20 World Cup 2024: Australia captain Mitchell Marsh not ready to bowl yet, says coach

T20 World Cup 2024: Australia captain Mitchell Marsh not ready to bowl yet, says coach

Australia coach Andrew McDonald has said that skipper Mitchell Marsh isn’t ready to bowl yet in the T20 World Cup and will be playing as a pure batter in their opener against Oman. Marsh is returning to the side after an injury layoff as he picked up the issue during the IPL 2024 campaign. The all-rounder would have to return from India back home for rehabilitation and cut short his IPL 2024 campaign. Marsh would reveal that he was getting good when the team was announced and was part of the side that faced West Indies and was dismissed for four runs. Speaking after the game, McDonald said the warm-up games was all about ticking off where Marsh’s fitness was. The Australia coach said that the skipper has built up confidence after fielding for a few more overs and was able to move freely. “For Mitch, (the warm-up games) was about ticking off where his body was at,” McDonald told cricket.com.au. “He fielded more overs tonight, he was able to move more freely, so he’s building a little bit of confidence there. It looks as though he’s all set for the first game. “The second part is just when the bowling comes back online â€æ it won’t be the first game.” What McDonald said about West Indies game? The match against West Indies saw the hosts hit the Aussies for 257 runs on the back of Nicholas Pooran’s 75. McDonald said that conceding close to 260 runs in a T20 game isn’t ideal but they were working on a few plans. “To concede 260-odd runs in a T20 game is not ideal,” said McDonald. “But we were working through some plans, we were working through what we needed to get out of the game, so there was a little bit of â€æ working on certain deliveries and certain things that can unfold. “I’m sure the West Indies were the same as well, I’m sure they were working on things that weren’t associated with the opponent they were playing.” Australia will open their campaign against Oman on June 5 and then face England three days later. Shakib Al Hasan keen on extending his career – India TV

Shakib Al Hasan keen on extending his career – India TV

Image Source : GETTY Shakib Al Hasan Bangladesh veteran and former captain Shakib Al Hasan had hinted at taking a call on his international career after Champions Trophy 2025 in September last year. But he doesn’t have plans to quite any time soon it seems as the all-rounder is hoping to play another T20 World Cup in 2026 that will take place in India and Sri Lanka. Shakib is one of the only two players (Rohit Sharma being the other), to feature in all nine T20 World Cups and many felt it could be his last mega event in the shortest format. However, the left-handed all-rounder is already entertaining plans to play next T20 World Cup scheduled in 2026. At the same time though, the man is focusing on contributing for Bangladesh in the upcoming tournament and hopes that the team does well in the mega event. “Firstly, when I started I didn’t expect that I will play for so long and secondly since the start of T20 Cricket World Cup till this T20 World Cup, I have participated in all them along with Rohit Sharma. It is a matter of pride for me and I’m happy that I could represent the country. “Me and Rohit Sharma are the only two players who played all the T20 World Cups and I hope that I can play another World Cup but before that would like to perform well in the tournament and Bangladesh can do better than previous T20 tournament,” Shakib said in a video uploaded on BCB’s Facebook page. With his family based there, USA can be called Shakib’s second home and believes Bangladesh can do well in the tournament with conditions favouring them. However, the team is coming off a a shocking series defeat by 2-1 in the three-match series against the USA. “It is alright that USA is my second home but it is difficult to say but I think we will get that because earlier when we played in West Indies and America we did well and we played in Florida we did well,” Shakib further added.

Rohit Sharma trains 'bowler' Shivam Dube for T20 World Cup ahead of India vs Bangladesh warm-up game

Rohit Sharma trains ‘bowler’ Shivam Dube for T20 World Cup ahead of India vs Bangladesh warm-up game

India are slated to face Bangladesh at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Saturday in their only warm-up fixture ahead of their opener in the 2024 T20 World Cup, which is on June 5 against Ireland at the same venue. Ahead of the match, India hosted their final practice session with former captain Virat Kohli still absent, but significant aspects remained Rinku Singh’s batting and Shivam Dube’s lengthy chat with captain Rohit Sharma. India had their practice session on Friday ahead of the T20 World Cup warm-up game against Bangladesh Just like on Thursday, India had a three-hour-long practice session on Friday morning as well. Kohli was the only squad member missing, as the 35-year-old was en route to New York to join the Indian side. Kohli had reportedly extended his period of break after the end of his IPL 2024 campaign and, hence, was not part of the first batch of players that left for the World Cup. Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Download Now! India started their training session with fielding drills, focusing on flat and high catches under the watchful eyes of fielding coach T Dilip. The focus then shifted to the batting nets, where Suryakumar Yadav spent a considerable time facing throwdowns. Rohit followed in next as he faced the likes of Khaleel Ahmed, Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan and Ravindra Jadeja, with the captain even practising the reverse sweep against the spinners. During his session, he was also seen having a lengthy chat with Dube about which areas or lengths to bowl, given that it was a drop-in pitch at the Cantiague Park in New York. According to the video released by Star Sports, Rohit can be seen animatedly explaining Dube about the lengths and the type of shots batters can attempt. Dube has been picked as an all-rounder in the Indian team despite getting limited opportunities with the ball in IPL 2024 as the Impact Player reduced his role to a mere middle-order batter. After bowling in the home series against Afghanistan earlier in January, Dube rolled hi arms for only an over in IPL 2024 for Chennai Super Kings, where he also picked a wicket. Unlike Thursday, when Yashasvi Jaiswal had a light training session owing to jet lag, the India opener had a proper session at the nets as he honed his cover drives and pull shots, while Hardik Pandya, once again, had a long batting stint while having regular conversations with batting coach Vikram Rathour throughout his session. Rathour was seen explaining to Hardik about his head position, stance and footwork. Rinku Singh in fluent touch The Kolkata Knight Riders batter may have missed the T20 World Cup squad cut with selectors opting for four spinners in the line-up, leaving Rinku in the reserves category, but the left-hander looked in fluent touch at the nets. According to journalist Vimal Kumar, Rinku looked in flair at the nets. With Kohli most likely to miss the warm-up game against Bangladesh, given that he will be joining the squad on Friday evening, and will be recovering from jet lag on Saturday, India might send Rinku to bat during the match.

Australia dealt a major blow ahead of T20 World Cup 2024 – India TV

Australia dealt a major blow ahead of T20 World Cup 2024 – India TV

Image Source : GETTY Australia team Australia have been dealt a massive blow ahead of T20 World Cup that is set to commence from June 2 (as per Indian Standard Time). Their skipper Mitchell Marsh won’t be bowling at least in their opening game against Oman scheduled on June 6 at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown in Barbados. Marsh is yet to recover completely from his hamstring injury sustained in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year while playing for Delhi Capitals. In fact, Marsh also played as a pure batter in the two warm-up matches against Namibia and West Indies scoring 18 and 4 runs respectively. Moreover, he didn’t take the field for the full bowling innings as well in the warm-ups as Matthew Wade took over the captaincy responsibility from him. Meanwhile, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the development related to the captain’s injury recovery while confirming that Marsh will definitely play the first game but is not up to the mark when it comes to bowling. “For Mitch, (the warm-up games) was about ticking off where his body was at. He fielded more overs tonight (in the warm-up against West Indies), he was able to move more freely, so he’s building a little bit of confidence there. It looks as though he’s all set for the first game. The second part is just when the bowling comes back online. It won’t be the first game,” McDonald told cricket.com.au. Australia conceded 257 runs against the West Indies in their second warm-up game but with only nine players available, they did feel the absence of their key players who are yet to join the team having played the Indian Premier League for two months. But McDonald is not worried much about the group spending time together ahead of the mega event. “It was by design, in terms of when we were getting people back after the IPL; we were well aware we weren’t going to get the squad together until the first of next month. We’ve got some things in place where we’ll bring the group together, we’ll work through our plans leading into Oman and there’s a bit of space between that game and (playing) England,” the Aussie head coach added.

Aiden Markram feels South Africa is just one World Cup away from multiple trophy wins

Aiden Markram feels South Africa is just one World Cup away from multiple trophy wins

South Africa T20I captain Aiden Markram feels that his team is just away from winning one World Cup trophy to begin a streak of wins in major tournaments. Notably, in their 34-year-long history in limited overs format, South Africa are yet to win a World Cup trophy. The Proteas have time and again come close to clinching their elusive first-ever title. However, they have agonisingly fallen short of lifting a World title despite their rich cricketing history. With the T20 World Cup 2024 beginning in a day, Proteas captain Aiden Markram expressed confidence in his men to finally end their World Cup drought, mentioning the quality of cricket, they’ve been playing for the last few years. The 29-year-old also said that if they’re able to win, they can potentially build up on their success and add more trophies to their cabinet. “I definitely think we have what it takes and it’s a World Cup it’s a really high level of cricket. I think this group has now been together for quite a few years. We’ve shown through many performances in the past few years that we’re able to beat the best in the world. So, I’m quietly confident that this team has what it takes to win the World Cup. I think once we’re able to get that first elusive one I think potentially quite a few could follow after that,” said Markram in a press conference. South Africa placed in Group D Notably, South Africa have qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup just twice out of the eight editions in 2009 and 2014 respectively. They got knocked out of the previous edition of the tournament in 2022 after facing an embarrassing loss against the Netherlands. Hence, the Rainbow Nation will be desperate to put up an improved performance in the upcoming edition of the event. South Africa are placed in Group D in the tournament alongside Nepal, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka against whom they start their campaign on June 3 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York. The unseeded Indian duo came back from behind to notch 18-21 21-19 24-22 win in the quarterfinal that lasted one hour and 19 minutes. The world number 30 Indian duo thus made amends of their defeat to the same opponents at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year. On Thursday, the Commonwealth Games bronze medallist duo of Treesa and Gayatri had stunned world number two Korean pair of Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee in the round of 16. Treesa and Gayatri will be up against fourth-seeded Japanese pair of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in the semifinals on Saturday. 'Fair character', 'has the fire', 'can infuse winning culture': Gautam Gambhir can be the kind of coach India need | Cricket News

‘Fair character’, ‘has the fire’, ‘can infuse winning culture’: Gautam Gambhir can be the kind of coach India need | Cricket News

While it has been widely reported that former India opener Gautam Gambhir as the new India coach is a ‘done deal’, an official announcement on the team’s new boss replacing Rahul Dravid might take a few more days to come. But experts have no doubt left that Gambhir is the kind of character who has the fire inside him to take the Indian team to new heights.Among his most recent successes, Gambhir took over the role of Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) mentor just before IPL 2024 and turned out to be the chief architect of KKR’s third triumph in the T20 league. It only added to his credentials as a mentor, after he had taken Lucknow Super Giants to the playoffs in two successive editions, before making a move to join KKR in a similar role. “What a record he has had as a coach!” said the former wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who announced his retirment after IPL 2024, on Cricbuzz. “Being a mentor for LSG, two years on the bounce qualifying (for playoffs), comes to KKR and they say, ‘Please, you got to do something special for us’. Ends up winning the trophy.” It was effectively Gambhir’s third IPL title in KKR colours. When the team won its two titles in 2012 and 2014, Gambhir was the KKR captain. “He has been at the helm, taken all the decisions (for KKR), be it sending (Sunil) Narine opening or getting Mitchell Starc in the auction — in all of those big recruits and getting the right team, the right balance, and then taking all the shots,” Karthik, who has previously played for KKR in the IPL, said.“I am seeing in the news that he could be part of the Indian team (chief coach) as well, and I really wish he does. He has that fire in him,” Gambhir added. Gambhir’s track record as a player and coach/mentor reflects that he knows what it takes to win big tournaments. Besides three IPL titles with KKR, Gambhir was part of the team under MS Dhoni when India won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup.Karthik believes that Gambhir has put things in such proper order at KKR that even if he has to leave the job and take up the role of India’s chief coach, KKR remain well placed to excel in the next IPL season as well. “I think he has really built a good (KKR) team, one that will have a lot of players retained and he has left them in a very, very good place. And if he gets the opporunity (India coach), I really wish he takes it. Being part of the national team and the patriotism that he has, I think he will definitely be tempted to take it and I really wish he comes in because he will infuse that winning culture he has infused here (at KKR),” reckoned Gambhir. “India would do very well under him because I feel he has that fire that is required.“When it comes to KKR, whenever he is back (after stint as India coach), they will take him back with open arms. But I do believe he has left Shreyas Iyer and the team in a much better place than it was when he took it (mentorship role).” Former New Zealand pace Simon Doul was also part of the discussion on Cricbuzz, and fully agreed with Karthik’s opinion.“Those (Gambhir) are the kind of people you want at the helm — highly respected, tough. He is a tough character, but I think he is very fair character and I think he’ll do a great job if he were to take over, if he were to accept the role,” said Doull. The tenure of current India coach, Rahul Dravid, will end after the T20 World Cup in June.
