Virender Sehwag Schools ‘Lucky’ Shubman Gill, Triggers Another ‘Strike-Rate Debate’

Former India batter Virender Sehwag has suggested that Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Shubman Gill is lucky to have his name in the travelling reserves for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas. Gill did not find a place in the 15-man squad, with the selectors preferring another youngster in Yashasvi Jaiswal for the openers slot. Gil, however, is one of the four travelling reserves. Gill, who was the Orange Cap winner last season, has only scored 322 runs in 11 matches during the ongoing season of IPL. Sehwag feels Gill should focus on scoring more runs so that he doesn’t get dropped from the team in the future. “I think he’s lucky that his name is in the T20 World Cup reserves. KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad are not even in that. That’s a good point and he should be motivated by that. Next time, he should not let his place go once he gets a chance. He should focus on scoring runs at a good strike-rate so he doesn’t get replaced,” Sehwag said during a discussion on Cricbuzz. Recalling his playing days, Sehwag recalled how the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman hardly gave the selectors any solid reason to drop them. “In my days, we had Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman. It doesn’t matter how many runs the other guys scored, these guys didn’t go out because they never stopped scoring runs. How will you drop them if they keep scoring runs? They never gave a reason to get dropped. This is what Shubman Gill has to learn. Once he returns to Indian team and plays regularly post the World Cup, he shouldn’t let such an opportunity arise again. Improve your skills and score big, because big scores will eventually save you,” he added. Gill is having a torrid season in IPL 2024, with his team also languishing in the bottom half of the points table. He had taken over captaincy from Hardik Pandya, who returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of the season to fill in the same role. With back-to-back defeats against RCB, Gill’s GT have slumped to ninth in the points table with eights points from 11 matches. Topics mentioned in this article

IPL-17: PBKS vs CSK | Chennai Super Kings eye payback in second successive clash against Punjab Kings

IPL-17: PBKS vs CSK | Chennai Super Kings eye payback in second successive clash against Punjab Kings

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will look to set their house in order and get back to winning ways when they face an upbeat yet unpredictable Punjab Kings for the second time in a row in the IPL in Dharamsala on May 5. Just three days back, PBKS outclassed CSK by seven wickets at Chepauk, considered their fortress. The two losses in the last three games at home have put Chennai in a spot. They are placed fifth on the table with 10 points and the five-time champions will hope the change of venue would bring a change in fortune as well with just four games to go to seal their place in the knockout stage. CSK’s failure to push the pace in the middle overs against the spin duo of Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar saw them post a below-par score of 162-7. Their batting has become too dependent on skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and six-hitting machine Shivam Dube and the moment one of them fails, it puts the pressure on others who have not been consistent in bailing out the team. While Gaikwad hit his fifth 50-plus score of the season to hold it together, veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane once again failed to capitalise on the starts, while Ravindra Jadeja and Sameer Rizvi struggled against spin. CSK also has been hampered by the health and fitness concerns of their pacers, including Deepak Chahar, who limped off holding his hamstring after bowling just two balls and is likely to miss the reverse clash against PBKS. The absence of their frontline bowlers, Matheesha Pathirana (niggle) and Tushar Deshpande (flu), also didn’t help matters the other day. Add to that the dew factor which took the spinners out of the equation and PBKS romped home comfortably. While Richard Gleeson made his IPL debut in the last match, CSK might bring back Mukesh Choudhary. Punjab Kings, on the other hand, have seen a resurgence as they registered back-to-back wins to re-ignite their playoffs hopes. En route to their win over CSK, Punjab became the second team after Mumbai Indians to beat the defending champions five times in a row and they will fancy their chances. Punjab remains an unpredictable side as although it notched up wins over Gujarat in Ahmedabad, Chennai at Chepauk and also chased down a T20 record score against KKR, it has struggled at home against RR, SRH and Gujarat. With back-to-back wins, PBKS climbed to seventh spot with 8 points and will need to carry the momentum to salvage their slim hopes. Jonny Bairstow, who made a hundred against KKR, will be their go-to man, while Rilee Rossouw, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh too have to raise their hands. PBKS’ bowling department has experienced names such as Kagiso Rabada, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Sam Curran and they need to be consistent. Rabada was brilliant the other day but others have gone for runs. If PBKS has to repeat their performance against CSK then the spinners — Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar — will have to deliver once again. Interestingly, the first IPL match in Dharmasala stadium was a clash between Chennai and Punjab in 2010. The venue offers a lot of runs and dew remains a factor, making it an enticing contest. Teams Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad (c), MS Dhoni (wk), Aravelly Avanish, Ajinkya Rahane, Shaik Rasheed, Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, RS Hangargekar, Ravindra Jadeja, Ajay Jadav Mandal, Daryl Mitchell, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Nishant Sindhu, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Mukesh Choudhary, Mustafizur Rahman, Matheesha Pathirana, Simarjeet Singh, Prashant Solanki, Shardul Thakur, Maheesh Theekshana and Sameer Rizvi. 'Team ka satyanash kar diya hai': Ramiz Raja pulls no punches after Pakistan's T20I series loss against England | Cricket News

‘Team ka satyanash kar diya hai’: Ramiz Raja pulls no punches after Pakistan’s T20I series loss against England | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Ramiz Raja, the former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), criticized the team’s management after their 2-0 loss in the T20I series against England, which took place right before the T20 World Cup.In the 4th T20I at Kennington Oval, England dominated Pakistan in every aspect of the game, successfully chasing down a target of 158 with more than four overs remaining.Pakistan’s performance was hindered by a lack of power in their middle order and the absence of magic from their pace bowlers while defending their target.Ramiz expressed his worries about the experimentation within Pakistan’s white-ball setup. He once again castigated the management for the repercussions that have resulted from their decision to experiment.“They should stop experimenting with the team. Go into a game with a proper combination. You need to get out of the phobia of strike rate because you don’t have that kind of players. Aapne is team ka satyanash kar diya hai (You have completely made a cock-up of this team),” Ramiz said on his YouTube channel.Ramiz has openly expressed his views regarding the decision to introduce Saim Ayub as an opening batsman. This change in the batting lineup disrupted the highly successful partnership between Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, which was implemented during Mohammad Hafeez’s brief tenure as the director of cricket for Pakistan.Since Ayub’s inclusion at the top of the batting order, his performance has been underwhelming. Moreover, Pakistan’s middle-order batsmen have also encountered difficulties in accumulating runs during crucial moments of the game, further compounding the team’s batting woes.“You have ruined the team by breaking the opening pair (of Babar and Rizwan). The role of the middle order is not defined. You have put all-rounders in the middle and two wicket-keepers are playing. You are changing the fast bowlers. Your spinners don’t spin the ball and don’t have the confidence. You put Imad Wasim out of the playing XI. There is no sideways movement and you have completely dismantled the team just before the T20 World Cup,” he added. In the recent T20I series against New Zealand, Ayub faced a tough time finding his form initially. However, he displayed promising improvement by delivering a brisk innings of 45 runs off 29 balls in the first match. Throughout the four matches against the Blackcaps, the 21-year-old managed to accumulate 52 runs at an average of 14.25, with his highest score being 32 in the series. Before Ayub’s inclusion, Babar and Rizwan had been the mainstays as openers for the Pakistani team, forming one of the most formidable opening partnerships in T20Is. Their partnership reached new heights during the last Men’s T20I World Cup in 2022, where they notably shared a record-breaking 105-run stand. This was their third century partnership in the tournament, highlighting their exceptional chemistry and batting prowess.Heading into the upcoming tournament, Pakistan finds itself placed in Group A, alongside notable competitors like arch-rival India, as well as Canada, USA, and Ireland. Their journey kicks off with a match against co-hosts USA at the Grand Prairie Stadium, Texas, scheduled for Thursday.(With ANI inputs)

MS Dhoni and Matheesha Pathirana

IPL 2024, MI vs CSK | Dhoni and Matheesha Pathirana were the point of difference, says Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya credited MS Dhoni and Matheesha Pathirana for being the point of difference between the 2 teams during the match between MI and CSK at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. CSK halted MI’s winning streak at their home ground as they registered an emphatic win to clinch their 4th match of the season. CSK trumped MI by 20 runs to have their first away win of the season. Hardik, during the post-match presentation, admitted that the total of 207 was definitely chaseable but lauded Pathirana’s efforts with the ball and mentioned Dhoni’s valuable guidance from behind the wickets. “Definitely, gettable. But they bowled pretty well and Pathirana was the difference. They were smart with their plans and used the longer boundary well. They got the hang of it, and they have a man behind the stumps telling them what’s working,” Hardik said in the post-match presentation. MI vs CSK: Match report | Highlights It was a comprehensive defence by CSK bowlers on the belter track of the Wankhede Stadium. Pathirana made a return to CSK after missing a couple of matches due to a niggle. He boosted CSK’s bowling attack by picking up 4 wickets and giving away just 28 runs. BABY MALINGA STUNS MI At one point, MI were racing away with the target as they lost no wickets for 70 runs. However, Pathirana in his very first over went on to dismiss Ishan Kishan. From there, MI kept on losing wickets as Rohit Sharma stood at the other end and went onto score a century. Pathirana registered his best IPL figures and was adjudged as the Player of the Match. Hardik also mentioned the difficulty in hitting against the pacers on this wicket and hoped for the team to come back in their next games. IPL 2024 Full Coverage | IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings | 2024 IPL Full Schedule “The ball was slightly gripping, and they got ahead of the game. Until Pathirana came, we were on course for the total. It was just about what was best at that point (on whether they could have used a spinner to Dube?). For seamers, it was more difficult to hit on this wicket. We are now on the road for the next four games. If we are smart, we can get the goal we want,” Hardik added. DHONI’S BLITZ AT WANKHEDE The highlight of the El Clasico was Thala Dhoni’s arrival at the crease and yet again finishing off in style at Wankhede, but this time for CSK. Hardik was slammed for 3 consecutive sixes on the trot and his fiery knock of 20 runs from last 4 balls propelled CSK to a winning total. Published By: Diya Kakkar Published On: Apr 15, 2024

Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand upset World No. 2 Baek-Lee; PV Sindhu goes down to Marin

PV Sindhu suffered yet another setback against Carolina Marin, but the rising Indian women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand stunned world number two Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee of South Korea to enter the quarterfinals at Singapore Open here on Thursday. Double Olympic medallist Sindhu blew away an 18-15 lead in the decider to go down to familiar rival Marin in a thrilling 21-13 11-21 20-22 women’s singles last-16 match. It was Sindhu’s sixth loss on the trot against her arch-rival, dating back to 2018. The Commonwealth Games bronze medallist duo of Treesa and Gayatri kept the Indian flag flying high by eliminating Baek and Lee 21-9 14-21 21-15 in close to one-hour battle. This was the world number 30 Indian duo’s maiden win from three meetings against the world number two Korean pair. They will be up against another South Korean pair — sixth seed Kim So Yeong and Kong Hee Yong — in the quarterfinal of the BWF World Tour Super 750 event. The Indian duo had lost to the Korean pair at the Hangzhou Asian Games pre-quarterfinals last year. The Baek-Lee duo was error prone as Treesa and Gayatri held a commanding 18-9 lead before taking the opening game without much fuss. But the Indians allowed the South Koreans to bounce back, committing unforced errors in the second game as the match went to the deciding third game. The rival pairs exchanged some powerful smashes and were locked 8-all before the Indian duo took a slender two-point lead at the final mid game break. They continued to play with aggression and reeled off six points on succession to make it 16-9 and seal a memorable win. In the men’s singles, world No. 10 HS Prannoy, seeded eighth, lost 13-21, 21-14, 15-21 to Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, ranked 11th in the world, in a 45-minute match. This was the Indian’s fourth defeat against the Japanese in six matches. In the women’s singles, Sindhu, fresh from her runner-up finish at the Malaysia Masters last week, took the opening game against her Rio Olympics final nemesis, but the Spaniard bounced back to win in a one-hour, eight-minute battle. Having saved one match point, Sindhu committed a sloppy misjudgement of the shuttle on the backline to prolong her wait to five years and 11 months. Sindhu had last beaten Marin in the quarterfinals of the Malasyia Open on June 29, 2018. Since then, the Indian has endured six losses on the trot. Facing each other for the first time in seven months after their heated Denmark Open semi-final clash, the double Olympic medalist Indian dominated the opening game against an error-prone Marin. With a powerful body smash, Sindhu took a massive 11-6 lead and maintained her authority to extend it to 15-8. The third-seeded Marin tried to come back but Sindhu held her ways and sealed it comfortably. But the Spaniard World No. 3 bounced back strongly in a lopsided second game, where she won six points on the trot and cruised to a 17-7 lead to force a decider. Maintaining her lead, Sindhu nosed 11-9 ahead in the final mid-game interval as she unleashed a powerful body smash to make it 14-10. Sindhu exhibited a brilliant drop shot as she went two points shy of an elusive win against Marin making it 19-17. But the Indian lost her composure as she found the net, allowing Marin to bounce back and get a match point at 19-20. Marin, however, shot it wide as the game hung in balance at 20-all before the Spaniard got another match point with her fiery smash. But this time, Marin had the last laugh with Sindhu erring on her judgment on back court. This was Marin’s 12th career win from 17 matches against the Indian. Sri Lanka vs West Indies, SL vs WI 2024, Today Match Prediction

𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 : Sri Lanka vs West Indies 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 : Oct 13, Sunday 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 : 19:00 PM IST𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐄 : Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Dambulla, Sri Lanka𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 : 1st T20I 2024 Can Sri Lanka return to winning ways at home? Will a new-look West Indian side continue to fight with the same intensity? India vs Bangladesh TV channels: The fans can watch the match live on Hotstar Live Streaming: Live streaming of the match will be available on the FAFA191 Cricket Exchange India and website. SL vs WI Match Prediction & Analysis Sri Lanka and West Indies meet for what will be the first of three T20Is at Dambulla. Sri Lanka have had a dreadful time in this format in the past few months, winning just 3 out of 10 matches. They had won 4 out of their 5 games before that. West Indies, on the other hand, have played some exciting T20I cricket. They’ve been far more successful this year than in the past, winning 12 out of the 16 games they’ve been involved in. TEAMS PREVIEW Sri Lanka Preview Sri Lanka, following a dismal end to their world cup campaign in West Indies, are rebuilding for the future. Having gone down to India 0-3 at home in July, they’re now facing the prospect of challenging a team like West Indies at home with a fairly strong squad with the right mix of youth and experience. Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera have made their spots in the top order their own. West Indies Preview West Indies have had a phenomenal run in T20Is this year, winning more than 80% of the encounters they’ve partaken in. Although there will be some key names missing for the Windies, including Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russel, Shimron Hetmyer, the men in Maroon have enough reinforcements heading into this series. Weather Conditions Dambulla is a strip for the batters. The average run-rate this year is 8.85 and the lowest score by a team batting first is 160. More than 200 runs has been breached twice in the last three, with the average powerplay score around 55. Bowlers’ odds of striking could go up with the batsmen playing freely looking to maximize scoring opportunities early on. Swing and seam bowlers could make breakthroughs with the new ball when operating on the right line and length. The weather in Dambulla seems to be alright at the moment, but it’s Sri Lanka and the conditions might quickly deteriorate here. SL vs WI Pitch Report The Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla will be hosting this contest. Sri Lanka has played 3 T20Is at this stadium and won two of them. Afghanistan posted 209/5 the highest first innings score here earlier this year and Sri Lanka nearly completed a successful chase but fell short in the end by 3 runs to finish with 206/6- which is still the best effort by a chasing side. Toss: To Bat Playing at a venue where teams batting first have won all the three matches, it’s quite simple to work out what to do. Win toss, elect to bat first and make first use of the conditions, and post a big score. This blueprint has brought success here, so we reckon that the toss winning captain would opt to bat first.

He has a brilliant ODI record and the skipper is our tip for England’s highest run scorer in this match. Adil Rashid has 183 ODI wickets and he is a strong choice for England’s top wicket taker on Friday.Devon Conway was not at his best during the T20I series but will have enjoyed his rest in Tuesday’s game. The left-hander is our pick for New Zealand’s highest run scorer in Cardiff. Trent Boult has taken 5x 5-wicket hauls in ODIs and the left-armer is well worth backing as New Zealand’s highest run scorer in this clash. With excellent recent form, we suggest choosing Jos Buttler to score over 31.5 runs in this fixture. ENG vs NZ 1st ODI Match Prediction & Betting Tips After a very entertaining T20I series which ended 2-2 on Tuesday evening in Nottingham, England and New Zealand turn their attention to ODI cricket with the first of four matches in this format. This will be the first ODI between the sides since their famous 2019 World Cup Final. This opening game of the ODI series gets underway at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on Friday afternoon at 12:30 local time. England have not played an ODI since early March of this year but now will be fully focusing on this format ahead of the World Cup. As ever, they will be hard to beat with such a strong batting unit. New Zealand showed their character and talent during the T20I series as they fought back from 2-0 down. They will come into this series as underdogs but do not expect that to mean they are not competitive. ENG vs NZ Match Toss PredictionThe last two ODIs at this venue saw 9 wicket wins for the teams batting second. As a result, we predict that both captains will choose to field first if they win the toss. ENG vs NZ Pitch ReportThere is always something in this wicket for both the spin and pace bowlers. We expect a par score to be no higher than 305 on this pitch. Cardiff Weather ReportThe forecast is for the temperature to be in the mid-20s for the majority of this game with the humidity levels climbing across the match. Cricket in uncharted territory as T20 World Cup starts in Texas

Cricket ventures into uncharted territory on Saturday as the first ever major tournament to be staged in the United States gets under way in Texas with the opening game of the T20 World Cup. Cricket in uncharted territory as T20 World Cup starts in Texas A month-long festival of the fastest and most explosive form of the sport which is being shared between venues in Texas, Florida, New York and the Caribbean begins with the US taking on Canada at the Grand Prairie Stadium on the outskirts of Dallas on Saturday. Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Download Now! It marks the opening skirmish of the first ever major International Cricket Council event to be held in part in the United States. While the bulk of the tournament will be played out in the Caribbean, 16 group stage games in the 20-team tournament will be played on American soil, including the highlight of the group stage a clash between India and Pakistan due to be played in Long Island, New York. The rest of the tournament will be held in the West Indies, including the Super Eight stage, the semi-finals and the final, which will be played at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. While cricket is widely played at a recreational level in the United States, with strong presences in all three of the states that have been chosen for games, organisers are realistic about the chances of “converting” mainstream American sports fans. Instead, they expect that the large immigrant communities from cricket-loving backgrounds, including thousands of India fans in particular, will pack the stadiums. “I think, number one, we want to celebrate those that are already fanatical lovers of cricket. They deserve to see the best players in the world come into their backyard and have that chance,” T20 World Cup USA, Inc. chief executive Brett Jones told AFP. “Number two, I think it’s about spiking curiosity in the game,” he said. The ICC also sees the tournament as a launch pad towards the sport’s return to the Olympics for Los Angeles 2028, when the T20 format will be used. Major League Cricket, a T20 tournament, was launched last year and also stands to benefit from any growth in interest in the big-hitting, spectacular shortest form. But it is not only the American market that the ICC is focused upon the expansion of the tournament has opened up opportunities for newer cricket nations to compete on the big stage. In recent years, the sport has been able to expand outside of its traditional strongholds with Ireland and Afghanistan earning places in the 12-strong elite with full Test status. But the ICC see the T20 format as the perfect vehicle for growing the game and this year’s edition will feature three T20 World Cup debutants in the USA, Canada and Uganda. Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Oman are among the other nations who are relatively new to the big stage and who will be looking to make their mark and grab some attention with an upset win. With the teams drawn in four groups of five teams, with just the top two advancing, none of the smaller nations are expected to progress beyond the group stage and there is a danger the pool stage could mainly be a ‘weeding out’ process. India, winners of the first edition in 2007, are the favourites, with their line-up packed with players from the annual Indian Premier League. Australia, winners of the ODI World Cup last year along with the World Test Championship, opted to leave out their veteran batsman Steve Smith but big-hitting David Warner and pacemen Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins provide plenty of experience. Other possible contenders include defending champions England, who will be without the star of their 2022 triumph Ben Stokes, who is managing his fitness after a knee operation. England warmed up for the tournament with a seven-wicket rout of Pakistan in London on Thursday. Co-hosts West Indies won the tournament in 2012 and 2016 and are hoping that they can benefit from familiarity with the surfaces in the region. South Africa, New Zealand and Pakistan will all fancy their chances of making an impact in a tournament which always produces surprises. sev/rcw/dj This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
