World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz Survives Scare At French Open

Carlos Alcaraz in action during French Open© AFP World number three Carlos Alcaraz survived a huge scare at the hands of 176th-ranked Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong to reach the third round after a four-set triumph on Wednesday. Wimbledon champion Alcaraz, who made the semi-finals at Roland Garros last year, scrambled to a 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 second round victory over a player taking part in only his second Grand Slam main draw. The 21-year-old Spaniard was broken five times and hit 47 unforced errors before De Jong, playing his fifth match at the tournament, eventually wilted under the roof of Court Phillipe Chatrier. “Every player can cause you trouble,” said Alcaraz. “You have to be focussed in every round, have to play at your best, it doesn’t matter what the ranking is. Jesper has the work and level to break into the top 100.” Alcaraz goes on to face either American 27th seed Sebastian Korda or South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo for a place in the last 16. Despite being broken in the second game of the opening set, Alcaraz broke three times himself to grab the advantage. The battling Dutchman then saved eight break points over the course of the second set before the Spaniard found the killer blow. However, Alcaraz, who arrived at the tournament under an injury cloud after sitting out the Rome Open with a right arm problem, went off the boil in the third set. He committed 15 unforced errors to the Dutchman’s five as the qualifier cut the deficit. Alcaraz then twice had to come back from breaks early in the fourth set before running away with the last four games to triumph. IPL 2024: Stephen Fleming hoping for a positive report from CSK medical team on Deepak Chahar | Cricket News

IPL 2024: Stephen Fleming hoping for a positive report from CSK medical team on Deepak Chahar | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Although seamer Deepak Chahar‘s most recent injury “doesn’t look good,” Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming expressed optimism for a positive report from the team’s medical staff ahead of the ongoing IPL’s business phase.Fleming did not provide any information regarding Chahar’s recent injury, but in just the second ball of the Punjab Kings’ chase in Chennai on Wednesday night, the 31-year-old seamer was seen pulling off his run-up.IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLEAfter speaking with the physiotherapist and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Chahar appeared to be suffering from a hamstring injury. He did not bowl during the remainder of the match.Injuries have plagued Chahar’s career in the past few years, depriving him a berth on the Indian squad.“Yeah, the travelogue is pretty busy. There’s a lot of ins and outs. So, Deepak Chahar doesn’t look good,” said Fleming during the post-match presser.“The initial feeling wasn’t great. So, I’m hoping for a more positive report when the physio and the doctor have a look.”Due to Chahar’s injury, Gaikwad was compelled to insert Shivam Dube, who has mostly been employed as a batter this season, for one over. However, Fleming acknowledged that Dube is not fit for the role in the IPL due to the Impact Player rule after Dube went for 14 in the one over he bowled. Dube will have his opportunity under the right circumstances.“He (Dube) is ready to bowl and is working hard on it. He will play a role in the right conditions, and with the Impact Player rule, we have players who can fit the role better. Currently, his necessity to bowl is pretty much small,” the coach said.CSK suffered a seven-wicket defeat to PBKS, their second loss at home this season, managing a meagre 162 for 7, which was comfortably chased down with 13 balls to spare.Talking about the demanding wicket at Chepauk, Fleming said, “It’s difficult, and we have spoken on the unpredictability of the wickets here before. Batting first makes it difficult for us to judge as to what a good competitive score is.“We had a couple of 200s (before), which was in our minds today. But, the wicket was very sticky.“We also had a good start in the (first) six overs before things became difficult. We also tried a few lefties in the form of Dube and (Ravindra) Jadeja but we just couldn’t get anything through the middle. They bowled really well, they got good purchase and held onto it. We just got stifled through the middle, which prevented us from getting a score of 180,” he said. With a low score to defend, Fleming was impressed with the commitment and performance shown by English pacer Richard Gleeson, who made his debut last night.“Richard Gleeson was good, and it was a positive. Losing Fizz (Mustafizur Rahman) is disappointing.“Tushar (Deshpande) has a bit of flu going around as well. So, we’ve had to make a few changes, which is unusual. Again, that’s part of it, and we have got the resources,” he said.“Just they haven’t had the game time to be really comfortable with their roles and us to be comfortable with a game plan, which we’re struggling a little.”Ajinkya Rahane, the experienced opener, reached double figures despite struggling in the last four games, although he was only able to get a score of 29 off of 24 balls.“I thought he (Rahane) was good today. He’s been probably a bit too aggressive in what he wants to do,” Fleming observed.“Keep in mind, we’re batting on wickets here that we don’t know how they are gonna play. So, we got to take a bit of a pause to see what a good score is. If you are 3 for 30, the game is pretty much over.“His (Rahane) hitting that was so good last year, is more crisp. It’s not for lack of intent. He has doubled up on intent. We’re fine with Jinks and the role he plays.” (With PTI inputs)

How Hardik Pandya's Mumbai Indians Can Still Qualify For IPL 2024 Playoffs

How Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians Can Still Qualify For IPL 2024 Playoffs

In the ongoing IPL, Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai Indians (MI) stand in ninth place with six points and a net run rate of -0356 after winning just 3 of 11 matches in the tournament. After displaying a poor performance in the 17th season of the tournament, MI’s chance to finish the league in the top three has ended, but still, they can qualify for the playoffs. On Friday, the Mumbai-based franchise suffered a 24-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium. Currently, Pandya’s side have six points after playing 11 matches and need to win their upcoming three matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Lucknow Super Giants to bag six points from these games. 12 points after playing 14 matches will be enough for them to qualify for the playoffs only if the results of other franchises go in MI’s favour. MI can’t end their IPL 2024 run above Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the standings since they already have 16 and 14 points respectively after playing 10 matches. While the Mumbai-based franchise will remain below Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) since they have already bagged 12 points. So, they can only finish in the fourth place only if LSG concede defeat in their remaining four matches against KKR, SRH, Delhi Capitals (DC), and MI. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya’s side will also keep an eye on Chennai Super Kings (CSK), DC, Gujarat Titans (GT), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and hope that they don’t cross the 12-point mark and have a lower net run rate in IPL 2024. Recapping the match between MI and KKR, Mumbai put Kolkata to bat first, a solid partnership stand of 83 runs between Venkatesh Iyer (70 off 52) and Manish Pandey (42 off 31) guided KKR to 169. For MI, Jasprit Bumrah returned with a double-wicket over before returning with a spell of 3 for 18 in 3.5 overs. In reply, MI were bundled out for 145. Starc made a terrific comeback in the tournament returning with a figure of 4-33 in just 3.5 spells, handing KKR a 24-run victory. Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine both finished with identical figures of 2/22, including some big wickets in the first half of the chase which put KKR on top in the match. Following the win, KKR stand in second place on IPL 2024 standings with 14 points. While MI hold ninth place with 6 points. MI will take on SRH in their forthcoming match on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium. (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) Justin Langer drops India coach plan after Rahul’s caution

Justin Langer drops India coach plan after Rahul’s caution

Lucknow Super Giants coach Justin Langer with captain K.L. Rahul | Photo Credit: Sandeep Saxena Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer was enticed by the prospect of becoming India’s head coach but K.L. Rahul’s word of caution regarding the “pressure and politics” that come with the job dissuaded him from pursuing the “amazing” opportunity. Langer, who served as Lucknow Super Giants’ head coach this IPL season, recalled a chat with franchise skipper and a senior member of the Indian team Rahul. Never say never, but… “You never say never. And the pressure of doing it in India… I was talking to KL (Rahul) and he said, ‘You know, if you think there’s pressure and politics in an IPL team, multiply that by a thousand… (that’s) coaching India,” said Langer. “That was a good bit of advice, I guess. It would be an amazing job, (but) I have (put myself out of contention),” he added. Before taking up the assignment with Super Giants this year, Langer had coached Australia from May 2018 to February 2022, helping the team navigate a difficult period in the aftermath of the infamous ball-tampering scandal. Under Langer’s guidance, Australia lifted its first-ever T20 World Cup title and also went on to win the Ashes. “I also know that it’s an all-encompassing role, and having done it for four years with the Australian team, honestly, it’s exhausting. And that’s the Australian job!,” the 53-year-old said. The BCCI has invited fresh applications for the head coach position, with a deadline set for May 27 as Rahul Dravid is set to exit after the T20 World Cup.

"You Don't Want To Play And Not Perform": Ex India Star's Firm Take On Rohit Sharma's IPL 2024 Form

“You Don’t Want To Play And Not Perform”: Ex India Star’s Firm Take On Rohit Sharma’s IPL 2024 Form

Rohit Sharma hasn’t been in best form in IPL 2024© BCCI/Sportzpics With the Mumbai Indians’ campaign almost done and dusted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, there’s little motivation for players to continue giving their best. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, etc. are all established stars but haven’t been able to lift the Mumbai Indians’ campaign this season. As there remains the threat of their performances going down further, with MI unlikely to qualify for playoffs, former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta feels there’s still ‘pride’ to play for. Urging Rohit to not take his foot off the gas, Dasgupta urged the veteran opening batter to think of the forthcoming assignments and end the IPL campaign on a high. “You are playing for the pride of the team, you are playing as a professional cricketer and you are playing for your pride as well. You don’t want to play a game and not want to perform. Everytime you cross the line, you want to do your best,” Dasgupta told Star Sports. Dasgupta also feels next year’s IPL mega auction could be a key motivating factor for Rohit to do well. With Hardik now leading the franchise, it has been suggested by many that Rohit could decide to leave the franchise after the season. “Let’s not forget that next year is the big auction. This is the last few opportunities that all the professional cricketers have. Even if the team is not going to qualify, at least to put up a good show and tell everyone, ‘You know what, I am there’,” Dasgupta said. Dasgupta also feels that it’s important for Rohit to continue performing, keeping in mind his next assignment, which is the T20 World Cup 2024 with the Indian team. “He is such an integral part of the team since he is the captain, but he sets the tone as well at the top of the order. That’s what he has been doing for the last year and a half,” he added.

The match will be played at Eden Park in Auckland and will start at 5:00 AM IST on December 19. Auckland Aces would look to put up a better show in Super Smash 2023 after a poor show in last season where they finished last, with just three wins in 10 games. Sean Solia will lead the side. They will miss a few key players like Finn Allen who is with the New Zealand team for the series against New Zealand.  Canterbury, on the other hand, performed brilliantly in the last season and reached the final. However, the team lost to Northern Knights in the summit clash. The team will also be without some of the regular players like Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell among others due to the series against Bangladesh and it will be an opportunity for the youngsters to prove their mettle at the big stage. AA vs CTB Match Toss PredictionIt will be the first game on this ground and there will be some juice on the surface for the bowlers early on. Both captains will look to bowl first. “Not A Great Day For Shah Rukh Khan”: Last Over Drama Makes Actor Tense In KKR vs RR IPL 2024 Game

Shah Rukh Khan during the last over of KKR vs RR IPL 2024 game© Twitter It was the day of another last-over drama at the IPL 2024. Kolkata Knight Riders looked like pocketing the match against Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens but Jos Buttler had some other idea. The RR star batter scored 107* as RR chased down a target of 224 – the highest ever in IPL history – on the last ball of the 20th over. With the win, RR consolidated their top spot with 12 points from seven matches while KKR are second with eight points from six matches. The match also saw KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan many different emotions. When Sunil Narine scored century, SRK’s joys knew no bounds. But then, as the last-over drama ensued with RR needing nine off six balls, a tense image of Shah Rukh was displayed on the screen. The internet reacted to the photo. Asked to bat first, Sunil Narine’s 109 off 56 balls powered hosts KKR to a formidable 223/6 in front of a packed Eden Gardens. But Buttler had other ideas as he dragged the Royals, dead an buried at 121/6 in the 13th over, past the target of 224 in the last ball of the game after the visitors needed 46 runs in the last three overs, and 28 in 12 balls.
