Nepal says Lamichhane denied visa for T20 World Cup

Nepal says Lamichhane denied visa for T20 World Cup

Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane. File | Photo Credit: AFP Nepal said Thursday the U.S. embassy had denied controversial star Sandeep Lamichhane a visa and there was a “slim or no chance” he would play in the T20 World Cup. The T20 World Cup begins on Saturday, co-hosted by the United States and West Indies, with Nepal’s first game on June 4 in Dallas. Nepal wanted to select spin bowler Lamichhane, who had his eight-year sentence for rape quashed on appeal this month. The former captain said last week his US visa had been denied, calling the decision “unfortunate”. Chhumbi Lama, central committee member of the Cricket Association of Nepal, said their subsequent bid to push for a US visa had failed. “There is a slim — or no chance — for him to be involved in the World Cup,” Lama told AFP. “The Cricket Association of Nepal had lobbied to the US embassy through different Nepal government agencies, but the visa was denied.” Lamichhane, 23, was once the poster boy for cricket in Nepal, but was not included in the original squad because of the conviction for raping a young woman in a Kathmandu hotel in 2022. The International Cricket Council said that all T20 World Cup squads had been named by the May 25 deadline. Any alteration to Nepal’s squad would now require approval from the ICC’s event technical committee.

'Will park few balls out of Long Island...': Rohit, Kohli ignored as Shastri picks 2 players key to India’s T20WC hopes

‘Will park few balls out of Long Island…’: Rohit, Kohli ignored as Shastri picks 2 players key to India’s T20WC hopes

With less than a month’s time left before India kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign in New York against Ireland on June 5, former India head coach Ravi Shastri picked two players who will play a key role in the side’s title hopes. And it’s neither Virat Kohli nor captain Rohit Sharma who will likely play their final T20I appearance at the tournament. Shastri instead picked two left-handed batters who are all set to make a debut in a multi-nation ICC tournament for India – Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube. Ravi Shastri picks 2 players key to India’s T20 World Cup hopes Jaiswal has stated success recently after smashing a record tally of runs in the Test series against England at home earlier this year, which is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship series. However, he has been a force to reckon with in the shortest format as well, where he amassed 502 runs in just 16 innings for India since his debut in mid-2023, which comprises a century and four fifties. “The two gentlemen you’ve got to watch out for, and both are left-handers, both playing their first World Cup,” Shastri told ICC. “One is [Yashasvi] Jaiswal. We know a lot about him, he did extremely well against England, explosive at the top of the order, left-hander, he’s young, he’s fearless and he’ll play shots.” ‘Watch out for Shivam Dube’: Ravi Shastri The other player that Shastri picked is Chennai Super Kings star Dube, who cracked 26 sixes in just 11 matches in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. The left-hander earned his spot in the Indian T20 World Cup squad on the back of a stellar show in the T20 league in 2023 and 2024, along with his two back-to-back fifties for India in the home T20I contest against Afghanistan earlier in January. “But there’s someone in the middle order, please watch out for [him], because he is explosive, he’s devastating and he’s a match-winner. He hits sixes for fun, and when it comes to spin bowling, he can kill you,” Shastri said. “He’ll park a few balls out of Long Island into the small island, he’s that kind of a player. He hits it big, he hits it long, and like I said, against spin, he could kill you. “Even against the fast bowlers, he’s worked out his game, he’s understood the way to play and I think he holds the key at that number five, number six position because if you’re on the doldrums, you want someone to change it in 20-25 balls, he’s the player to go to.” Shastri was effusive in his praise for the tall all-rounder saying that he could be the key to unlocking big totals for India in the T20 World Cup. Dube has struck at a rate of 170.73 in this ongoing IPL season, while scoring a boundary in almost four deliveries. “His strike rate, which will be close to 200 most of the time, will help India immensely in going forward, getting those 190s, 200s that are needed in big competitions, especially like the [T20] World Cup. So enjoy it, watch out for this left-hander — he’s big, he’s strapping, and he hits a long ball.”

Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders T20 Match Prediction & Betting Tips, IPL 2024 Rajasthan Royals will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the 70th match of the IPL 2024. The game will be played at the Barsapara Cricket Ground in Guwahati and will start at 7:30 PM IST on May 19. RR and KKR have already qualified for the playoffs but there is still plenty at stake, especially for RR. The Sanju Samson-led side has lost the last four games and there is a chance they might lose out on a top 2 finish if they suffer another defeat. RR thus need to ensure they beat KKR as it will secure their top 2 finish. If RR lose and SRH win their last game, RR will slip to third and will play the Eliminator. However, they would like to feature in Qualifier 1 as it will give them an extra shot at the final berth should they lose the Qualifier 1.  Meanwhile, KKR have been outstanding and will finish the league stage as table toppers for the first time in IPL history. They are confirmed of a top two finish and thus a berth in Qualifier 1. IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad seek return to swashbuckling ways against Rajasthan Royals | Cricket News

HYDERABAD: Stung by back-to-back losses, Sunrisers Hyderabad will be keen to get back to winning ways against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday. The 2016 champions went down to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 35 runs and suffered an embarrassing 78-run loss to Chennai Super Kings- chasing down 206 and 213, respectively.IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLEAs the race for the playoffs intensifies, the Pat Cummins-led side, who are now fifth in points table with 10 points, need to bring their ‘A’ game against the Royals. While setting up totals has been their strong suit, Sunrisers seem to come unstuck batting second. Cummins wants his team to polish their skills in that aspect. Opener Travis Head has not fired in the last two games and a big score from the Australian opener, who tops the batting charts for his side with 338 runs, will help SRH. Abhishek Sharma also needs to be consistency as a lot depends on the start these two provide. The fragile middle-order consisting of Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Abdul Samad stood exposed in the last two games. The dip in Klaasen’s form (20, 7, 15 in last three outings) compounded their woes.T Natarajan (13 wickets) has been the pick of the bowlers but the rest have all gone over nine runs per over.In contrast, the Royals have been on a roll. With 16 points in their kitty, they are almost assured of a playoff spot. Captain Sanju Samson (385) has led from the front while Riyan Parag (332), Jos Buttler (319) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (249) have all struck form. Jaiswal, who struggled initially, slammed a century against Mumbai Indians, adding more firepower to the batting unit. Yuzvendra Chahal has been impressive with 13 scalps while Trent Boult and Sandeep Sharma have produced good results with the new ball.Royals are coming into this match with a seven-wicket win over LSG and a nine-wicket thrashing of MI and would like to extend their purple patch.

Avesh Khan Livid As Sanju Samson Makes Fielding ‘Disaster’ To Drop Catch In PBKS vs RR IPL 2024 Match

The Punjab Kings vs Rajasthan Royals IPL 2024 game presented some brilliant bowling moments as the Sanju Samson-led side choked the hosts for runs in Mohali. RR have been one of the most consistent sides in the IPL 2024 and they brought their form against PBKS too. The hosts were without their regular skipper Shikhar Dhawan and could not get going with the bat. Rajasthan Royals kept dismissing rival batters as PBKS could not even touch 150-mark in 20 overs. While there were moments of brilliance from Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson, including the run out of Liam Livingstone, there were moments where he committed massive mess. Right at the start of the RR innings, he and Kuldip Sen almost dropped a  catch. Then, in the 19th over, he did not pay heed to Avesh Khan’s call as he charged to take a catch of Ashutosh Sharma. Though Avesh was closer, Samson went ahead  and dropped the catch. Avesh Khan was clearly frustrated with the call. He has costed Rajasthan Royals 10-15 runs here. This is the 4th time in IPL when Samson has not made a call for the catch and went running in to the fielder. Brain-fades!#PBKSvRR #SanjuSamson #LiamLivingston #RajasthanRoyals pic.twitter.com/XKTFM7zrJI — (@cric_insiderr) April 13, 2024 Rajasthan Royals bowlers under Avesh Khan and Keshav Maharaj exploited a sticky pitch to the hilt to restrict Punjab Kings to an underwhelming 147 for eight in their IPL match in Mohali  on Saturday. Pacer Avesh (2/34) and left-arm spinner Maharaj (2/23) did not allow any breathing space to Kings’ batters after Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson opted to field first. Ashutosh Sharma (31, 16b), Jitesh Sharma (29, 24b) and Liam Livingstone (21, 14b) tried to force the pace but Punjab needed more than those pretty little cameos. But the Kings had a rather quick start to their innings with 26 runs coming in the first three overs as Atharva Taide, who came in for injured skipper Shikhar Dhawan, hammered a couple of fours off pacer Kuldeep Sen. However, the brakes were soon applied as Taide’s mistimed pull off pacer Avesh Khan ended in the hands of Sen inside the circle. Thereafter the Punjab batters struggled to muster any sort of momentum on a pitch that gripped a bit, especially for left-arm spinner Maharaj and leg-spinner Chahal. However, a slice of credit should also go to veteran pacer Trent Boult who conceded just 15 runs in his three power play overs, a stage when the pitch was still fine for batting. The last three power play overs could only fetch 10 runs for Kings as they ended that passage with a modest 38 for one. In the next five overs, the hosts struggled to hit even one boundary as they laboured to 53 for four in 10 overs, losing Jonny Bairstow, stand-in-skipper Sam Curran and Prabhsimran Singh, all consumed by the combination of a slow deck and accurate spinners. Curran’s dismissal was the most telltale example of that. The left-hander failed to impart power or timing to his pull off Maharaj as the ball got even slower after pitching. Dhruv Jurel latched on to a tumbling catch while running in from deep mid-wicket. Their biggest hope on the day could have been the range-hitting ability of in-form Shahshank Singh but a feeble pull off Sen could not progress beyond Jurel at mid-wicket. With the cream of top-order back in the hut without any significant contribution, the PBKS required some hefty hand from Livingstone and Jitesh to get to even a par score. Sharma showed some intent too, clobbering Chahal for a gorgeously timed six over extra over, and later sent Sen for a six to the straight fence before getting out to Avesh. Livingstone, who creamed Sen for a six and four off successive balls through mid-wicket, and Ashutosh, who smoked Avesh for two sixes in the 19th over, helped PBKS add 61 runs in the last five overs, but their effort came a wee bit late. "This Is Not A Test Match": Kapil Dev Schools Rohit Sharma Over Jasprit Bumrah's Role

“This Is Not A Test Match”: Kapil Dev Schools Rohit Sharma Over Jasprit Bumrah’s Role

India legend Kapil Dev has questioned the Indian management on not opening the bowling with spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Following Sunil Gavaskar’s criticism on the same issue, Kapil Dev has also joined in. In both of India’s games – and Ireland and Pakistan – it has been Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj who’ve taken the new ball. However, it’s Jasprit Bumrah who has taken the Player of the Match award in both games. After his heroics against Pakistan, shoutsfor Bumrah to open the bowling have increased. “He needs to bowl the first over, he is a wicket-taking bowler,” said Kapil, speaking to ABP News. “If you make him bowl the fifth or sixth bowler, the game can slip out of your hands,” he added. The context to the criticism comes from the fact that India were defending a small total of 119 against Pakistan, and not opening with their deadliest pacer could have left them in a poor position. Bumrah turned the game in India’s favour towards the end, picking up three crucial Pakistan wickets: Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed. He ended with figures of 3/14. “This is not a Test match. This is T20. The quicker you take wickets, the more pressure it puts on the opposition,” said Kapil, India’s leading fast-bowling wicket-taker in Tests. “It is better to have a positive mindset. If Bumrah opens the bowling and picks up a couple of wickets, life becomes easier for the other bowlers as well,” said Kapil. Kapil hailed Bumrah for having exceeded expectations and achieved the status of the best bowler in the world. “We didn’t think he’d be able to play so much cricket, because his action and the way he runs puts pressure on his body and shoulders. But he has proved all of us wrong,” lavished Kapil about Bumrah. India face hosts USA at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, June 12, with the winner booking a place in the Super 8. Topics mentioned in this article

IPL 2024: Data useful but captain is the on-field boss, says KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit

IPL 2024: Data useful but captain is the on-field boss, says KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit

One of the enduring debates in T20 cricket is on data – its understanding and how much to use. Between Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Chandrakant Pandit, mentor Gautam Gambhir and analyst Nathan Leamon, each belonged to a different school of thought. So, how did KKR marry their views during their victorious campaign? Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer, coach Chandrakant Pandit and mentor Gautam Gambhir during a practice session(PTI) Gambhir recently said on R Ashwin’s talk show that he has “never believed in data”. Leamon has worked with the England cricket team for many years, and his coded signals from the dressing room balcony to provide tips to captains on using matchups had made headlines. KKR used this method actively when Brendon McCullum was the head coach, but it hasn’t been seen for the past two years. ALSO READ: IPL 2024 moved many needles, changed cricket’s grammar Without going into details on the strategy shift, Pandit, who took over the KKR post ahead of the 2023 season, said he believed data had its value, but the captain should be the final authority during play. “Data is useful. You can look at bowling charts, study patterns of bowling. It gives you an idea if you need to correct strategy on which deliveries and lengths to bowl during which phase of the game and in which conditions,” Pandit said. “But on field, the captain has the right to back his instincts.” He was asked about pacer Vaibhav Arora being used for his third successive powerplay over in the final where he was taken for 17 runs by Aiden Markram. It did not open up the match for Sunrisers Hyderabad, but it could have. SRH were shot out for 113 and KKR won by eight wickets. “It’s the spontaneous decision of the captain. And all of us felt it was the right decision because the ball was moving. Vaibhav being a little inexperienced, he felt the pressure after one bad ball, but that can happen. It’s easy to say from the outside that you go with another plan. But even that can cost you runs.” Pandit said the take on data differed from player to player; how to use it was part of the challenges of coaching. “Data may be helpful for five guys in the team, but may not be for ten other guys. We don’t spend hours on it. It’s not rocket science. It’s still how you bowl on the 22 yards…the bowlers have known about the 6-metre and 10-metre lengths all the time. It’s about giving them more ideas to succeed,” he added. Calling Shreyas Iyer a quality captain, Pandit said he was receptive to ideas but knew how to make his own calls. “Not just because he won the trophy, but I liked him as a captain because he was never rattled in any situation. He looked confident about his decision making and backed his instincts.” PERSONAL LEARNINGS From coaching six Ranji Trophy winning teams across three states (Mumbai, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh) to winning the IPL crown on second attempt, the former India player calls IPL 2024 a tournament of many personal learnings. His old-school coaching style has been questioned sometimes. Pandit said one never stops learning. “What I have understood from IPL is that every player at this level prepares differently,” he said. “Some players do not like to bat or bowl before a match. Initially, Mitchell Starc told me that he does not like to bowl a day before the match in the nets. Later, he felt the need to bowl and he wanted to attend the nets. Sunil Narine may come for an hour in the nets and bowl to one stump. They are used to their own preparations. They know their bodies better than anyone else. You go with that. “In domestic cricket, it’s tough sometimes because you may have only two batters with international experience, while in IPL you have 7-8. But I will be a slightly changed man. I have learned how to manage players slightly differently and give them more freedom when one can. I have never said I know everything. In domestic cricket as well, I have taken suggestions from my video analyst and used it against Mumbai.” Pandit is hopeful his success can open avenues for other Indian coaches to take senior positions in IPL teams. “I am honoured that KKR had faith in me. Gautam brought his international and KKR experience. His directions worked not just for the players but the coaching group as well. Between all the coaches, respect and communication was the way to go.”

What is a hybrid pitch as Indian cricket embarks on new innovation? How is it different from natural turfs? – India TV

What is a hybrid pitch as Indian cricket embarks on new innovation? How is it different from natural turfs? – India TV

Image Source : A view at the Dharamsala stadium. Indian cricket embarks on a new innovation as the nation’s first-ever hybrid pitch was unveiled at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in Dharamsala on Monday. The hybrid surface was unveiled in a grand ceremony and the event was attended by IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal and other cricket dignitaries including Paul Taylor, who is an ex-England player and SIS’s international cricket director. Hybrid pitches are combination of natural and synthetic fibres The new type of hybrid pitches is a combination of natural turf and synthetic fibres. These types of pitches have only 5% of synthetic fibres with 95% being the natural turf only. The synthetic fibre gets injected into the natural surface. These pitches promise to enhance the durability and consistent playability of matches. This also promises to reduce the strain and workload on the ground staff and will also maintain quality playing conditions. “The introduction of hybrid pitches is set to revolutionize cricket in India, following their success in iconic venues like Lord’s and The Oval in England,” said Dhumal, who hails from Himachal Pradesh. Notably, Taylor looks forward to more projects in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. “With the ICC’s approval, we’re excited to see the positive impact these pitches will have on the sport, starting with installations in Mumbai and Ahmedabad next,” Taylor said. ICC has sanctioned the hybrid pitches for T20s and ODIs and there are plans to use them on England’s county cricket grounds. How are hybrid pitches different from natural ones? According to Paul Taylor, the work required to renovate a pitch in between games will get much reduced on these surfaces. “The preparation of a hybrid pitch is no different to a fully natural pitch. They’re prepared in exactly the same way. What you’ll find, though, is when you finish the game on them, the amount of renovation work you need to do before the next game is massively reduced. So that’s where less pressure is put on the ground staff. You can play on it up to three times longer than what you ordinarily would on a natural turf pitch,” he said. The challenge will be to recreate the different behavioural patterns that we see on a natural surface as the match progresses further to the hybrid turfs. Taylor said that the characteristics won’t change fundamentally and one can control the pitch as per the need. “You can control playing characteristics (on the hybrid pitch) as they don’t change fundamentally. You can control the amount of moisture that goes into the pitch. If you want to play on a dry pitch, you can play on a dry pitch. If you want to leave more grass on, you can do that,” he added. So will the ball spin? “The ball will spin. What we have actually found anecdotally is that spin bowlers over a period of time will get more bounce out of the hybrid pitch than what they ordinarily would off a natural turf pitch,” he said. The playing conditions change over time but Taylor said the pitch can be controlled even when the conditions will change game after game. “Yes, the playing conditions still vary over time. But you’re still in control of what sort of works for you on a pitch. So, you might play on a new hybrid pitch for one game. And the playing characteristics are slightly different. But game two, three, four, five…the conditions will change. You can still control those conditions,” said Taylor.
