'Hindi/English': Ruturaj Gaikwad gets a hilarious toss suggestion from Wasim Jaffer

‘Hindi/English’: Ruturaj Gaikwad gets a hilarious toss suggestion from Wasim Jaffer

Former India cricketer-turned commentator Wasim Jaffer has jokingly suggested CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to opt for alternative toss methods to improve his record in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024. Notably, the 27-year-old has won just one toss in the ongoing season out of 11 matches during the fifth fixture against KKR. Amid his unlucky run with the toss, Jaffer has suggested Gaikwad use the famous gully cricket method of using a tobacco brand’s packet for the toss and choose between Hindi or English languages printed on either side. Notably, Gaikwad lost fifth consecutive toss of the season during Match 53 against PBKS at HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala which prompted a hilarious response from Jaffer. Gaikwad’s toss form may not have been the best this season but his batting form is second to none in the ongoing edition as he’s the second highest run scorer of the season so far. The right-handed batter has 509 runs to his name from ten innings at an average of 63.62 and a strike rate of 146.68 with one hundred and four fifties to his name. The opening batter scored second hundred of his IPL career during Match 39 against LSG scoring a phenomenal 108* (60) with the help of 12 fours and three sixes. He further scored a magnificent 98 (54) against SRH during Match 46 but agonizingly failed to score his second successive hundred. CSK yet to qualify for playoffs On the captaincy front, the Pune-born cricketer started his season well leading the defending champions to back-to-back victories in their first two games. He further led his side to make a comeback after two losses by registering consecutive wins against KKR and MI. However, CSK’s campaign hasn’t been going well after the first six games as they could only win one out of their last four matches. They’re precariously poised on the fifth spot on the points table with five wins from ten matches having ten points to their name. They need to win three out of their last of four matches for smooth qualification to the playoffs. Published By: Saurabh Kumar Published On: May 5, 2024

From Virat Kohli To Hardik Pandya: 5 T20 World Cup Selection Calls That Could Storm The World

From Virat Kohli To Hardik Pandya: 5 T20 World Cup Selection Calls That Could Storm The World

It’s that time of the year again when India will get an opportunity to end their ICC trophy drought. The T20 World Cup 2024 is just around the verge with its participants gearing up for the marquee event scheduled to be held in the United States and the West Indies in June later this year. Whatever you say about prioritising domestic cricket or not, the ongoing IPL 2024 season will be more important for the T20 World Cup selection than any other domestic tournament. So, the high-profile T20 league will be crucial for contenders to stake claim in India’s 15-member T20 World Cup 2024 squad because there isn’t even a week between the IPL and the upcoming ICC T20 event. (IPL 2024 Points Table) Nearly a third of the IPL is over with a few contenders already making their mark in the league. Let’s first look at a few players that are reasonable certainties. Any such list should always begin with skipper Rohit Sharma, he will open the proceedings with Yashasvi Jaiswal. And once you bring back Rohit, there is no point in leaving Virat Kohli behind, knowing that India’s batting still revolves around him. The only other batter who will certainly fly to the West Indies and the United States is Suryakumar Yadav, considering his 17-ball fifty against RCB on his comeback. In addition to these star batters, Jasprit Bumrah is also a no-brainer for the ICC event. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja are most likely to cement their places in the spin department. Meanwhile, the return of Rishabh Pant and the rich form of Yuzvendra Chahal has also perplexed the Indian think tank. Ahead of the squad announcement, the selectors will be keenly looking for a handful of answers from IPL to their questions. Keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at a few debate-stirring points on T20 WC squad selection. Seam-bowling all-rounder as sixth bowling option If fully fit and in form, Mumbai Indians’ new skipper Hardik Pandya is a definite starter. But the selectors will want to see what kind of role he plays for his IPL team. After five games this season, Hardik has scored 129 runs and has leaked runs at 11.12 in three innings. Meanwhile, Shivam Dube has had a wonderful start to the IPL 2024, with 176 runs in five innings at an impressive strike rate of 160, but he is yet to bowl in this IPL and that is what has thrown challenges to the selectors. However, it will be interesting to see how Shivam Dube will be accommodated in the playing XI. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant ready for T20 World Cup? PBKS batter Jitesh Sharma was the closest contender for the wicketkeeper role at the start of the IPL but the decision-makers would ideally have liked to see him a little more in international outings. However, the return of Rishabh Pant has cleared the doubts concerning his recent form in the IPL. The southpaw smashed 196 runs in six innings at 157.72. Pant has competition from the likes of Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, and Ishan Kishan, who are likely to be vying for the second wicketkeeper slot in the squad. “Yeah look it’s great for Indian cricket, but it’s also great for Rishabh Pant. I think the work that has gone into his rehab to get back to that level of play at any standard is an amazing achievement. “He deserves a lot of credit for his hard work and it’s great to see him on the field, captaining and playing well, batting and keeping,” former Australia captain Michael Clarke was quoted as saying to IPL broadcaster Star Sports. Pant, who had surgery on his knee, has shown that he is ready to bat and keep. Does Virat Kohli deserve a place in the squad? Former India captain Virat Kohli is currently leading the Orange Cap list after amassing 319 runs in six matches at 79.75, including a century. There is no way he is going to be left out, despite some talks to the contrary about his ‘anchoring’ strike rate. Virat has been an absolute match-winner for India since his international debut. In T20 World Cups, he has accumulated 1,141 runs in 25 innings at an impressive average of 81.50 and a strike rate over 130. With an immense experience of 117 T20I matches, Virat’s presence in the middle order as an anchor will only provide balance alongside the swashbuckling and aggressive styles of Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube. Pace bowlers apart from Bumrah Jasprit Bumrah is there for sure. He will be leading India’s pace battery in the T20 World Cup. But, India needs two more quicks in the starting XI for the ICC event. With Mohammed Shami out of contention due to injury and Bhuvneshwar Kumar not in India’s T20 schemes since the 2022 edition of the T20 World Cup, no one is closer to Bumrah in terms of quality and experience. The last squad that played against Afghanistan featured Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, and Mukesh Kumar. One of the all-format pacers, Mohammed Siraj has been conceding runs at 10.40 in the ongoing IPL with only four scalps to his name after six matches. Lucknow Super Giants’ pace sensation Mayank Yadav was somewhere in the talks of making the squad but he still needs a handful of international matches to prove his worth. With India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 likely to be announced in the last week of April, these contenders have limited opportunities to impress and partner Bumrah in the fast bowling department. Who are the death-over hitters? Finishers auditioning for the aforementioned role must be able to strike 180 or more in overs 17 to 20. For that role, no one can go beyond Rinku Singh, at least in the T20 format. The southpaw has smashed 356 runs in 11 T20I innings at a whopping strike rate of 176.23. There is no reason to keep him…

‘Start from zero…’: Shubman Gill after Gujarat Titans slump to third loss in a row | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured a dominant four-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans for their third consecutive IPL 2024 win on Saturday. This was RCB’s fourth win in 11 matches, which propelled them from last place to seventh, keeping their slim playoff hopes alive.Chasing a modest target of 148, Du Plessis (64) and Kohli (42) provided a strong start with a 92-run partnership in 35 balls, securing the win with 6.2 overs to spare at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.Du Plessis’s departure triggered a mini-collapse, as Gujarat struck back with wickets from Joshua Little and Noor Ahmad, leaving RCB at 117-6 when Kohli fell. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik (21) and Swapnil Singh (15) then ensured a smooth finish with an unbroken 35-run stand, guiding the team home without further trouble.Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans’s situation remains precarious, as they suffered their seventh loss in 11 matches. After the defeat, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill rued not having an extra bowling option in the side.“It all depends on the wicket, you see the first couple of overs. You get an idea and you play according to that. I think 170-180 on this wicket would have been a good total,” Gill said.“I think how we batted in the powerplay and how we bowled in the powerplay, that made a difference. We would have an extra bowling option (had we not lost early wickets.) Never easy. It’s important for us to start from zero (in the next game), need to move on,” he said.“Many positives to take from this game, need to make sure we don’t repeat our mistakes. It’s all about winning everything we can from here on,” Gill added.

‘This is one thing I missed a lot’: Rishabh Pant welcomes return to Indian cricket team for T20 World Cup after 16 months | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant recently resumed training with the Indian cricket team after a hiatus of over 16 months, in preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup‘s opening match against Ireland on June 5. The tournament is set to take place across the West Indies and the USA from June 1 to June 29. India’s pre-tournament preparations include a solitary warm-up fixture against Bangladesh on June 1 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. ALSO SEE: T20 World Cup Schedule Pant’s comeback to competitive cricket occurred during this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), following a severe road accident in December 2022. His return marks a significant moment as he dons the Indian jersey once again. In the IPL 2024 season, Pant played for the Delhi Capitals, who finished sixth in the standings. Despite the team’s failure to advance to the playoffs, Pant was a standout performer, accumulating 446 runs in 13 matches, including three half-centuries, and finishing as the team’s leading run-scorer. Ahead of the World Cup, Pant has visibly slimmed down and appears in excellent physical condition. A video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) featured Pant expressing his enthusiasm for rejoining the national team and the unique experience of playing in the USA.“This is one thing I missed a lot (practicing with the Indian team and playing for them). Getting back on the field with the Indian jersey on, it is a different feel altogether and this is something I missed a lot. I think seeing the teammates and meeting them again, spending time, having fun with them, enjoying having conversations, really enjoying it,” said Pant. “We are used to playing in certain countries but this is a different prospect. It has opened up a different channel for sport because I feel cricket is growing around the world and getting in a country like the US and getting the exposure here would be nice for cricket as well as USA cricket I guess. So just getting used to conditions over here and let us see how it goes. Hopefully, I make it count and make it more better from here,” he added.Pant’s performance in T20 World Cups to date includes participation in the 2021 and 2022 editions, where he scored a total of 87 runs across five innings, with a top score of 39. The upcoming World Cup presents an opportunity for Pant and the Indian team to strive for their first ICC trophy since winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. Despite reaching the finals and semifinals of various ICC tournaments in recent years, including the 50-over World Cup and the World Test Championship, India has not clinched an ICC trophy since their 2013 victory.India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup will commence against Ireland, followed by matches against Pakistan, the USA, and Canada in Group A. The team aims to secure their first T20 World Cup title since the inaugural tournament in 2007. In the previous edition held in Australia in 2022, India was eliminated in the semifinals by England.(Inputs from ANI)

T20 World Cup: South Africa trump Bangladesh by 4 runs in yet another low-scoring thriller

Keshav Maharaj of South Africa celebrate with teammates after dismissing Litton Das of Bangladesh during the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 10, 2024 in New York | Photo Credit: Getty Images via AFP Spinner Keshav Maharaj was lucky to defend 11 runs in the final over as South Africa held their nerves to beat Bangladesh by a mere four runs in yet another low-scoring thriller in the T20 World Cup in New York on Monday. In a contest where fortunes swung from one side to another, Bangladesh fought valiantly until the end riding on gritty knocks from Mahmudullah (20) and Towhid Hridoy (37), but could not land the killer punch in the 20th over chasing a modest 114. ALSO READ | Oceans apart: Bumrah’s searing spell takes Pakistan by storm With six needed off last two balls, Mahmudullah was caught near the ropes excellently by Aiden Markram off Keshav Maharaj (3/27), who was South Africa’s most successful bowler. The left-arm spinner bowled three full tosses in the final over but the Bangladesh batters were not able to put them away to end at 109 for seven. Anrich Nortje (2/17) continued to make the most of his form and Kagiso Rabada (2/19) and Marco Jansen (0/17) provided strong support. South Africa had recovered to post 113 for six after opting to bat on what has proved to be a challenging surface. Tanzid Hasan (9) perished early in the run chase after hitting a couple of fours while neither their skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (14 off 23) nor Litton Das (9 off 13) could convert starts. Shakib Al Hasan (3) too was beaten by Nortje’s pace when the right-armer bowled one short and the Bangladesh all-rounder mishit to lob one high in the sky. Struggling at 50 for four, Bangladesh found an excellent partnership between Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah, who put on 44 for the fifth wicket to take their side close to the finish line. Hridoy, who began with a six, did well to absorb the pressure in the company of Mahmudullah. The pair kept shaving off the target with smart rotation of strike as well as picking up the odd boundary, signalling that the wicket really has rewards for those who were able to alter their approach. Bangladesh seemed to be cruising towards the target until Hridoy’s dismissal — leg-before off Rabada in the 18th over — changed the complexion of the game. Earlier in the first half, pacers Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed excelled in favourable conditions to help Bangladesh restrict South Africa to a below-par total. Tanzim (3/18) ran through the Proteas top order in company of Taskin (2/19) while Mustafizur (0/18) too played his part well as Bangladesh produced a collective show despite strong resistance from Heinrich Klaasen (46) and David Miller (29). Klaasen and Miller looked to revive South Africa from a shaky start with a 79-run stand for the fifth wicket, but the pair could never really accelerate on a two-paced wicket on which the Bangladesh spinners also displayed control. Tanzim struck thrice in his opening burst to leave South Africa reeling at 23 for four inside the first five overs. After Quinton de Kock (18) showed aggressive intent by hitting the right-arm bowler for a six and a four in the initial exchanges, Tanzim made immediate amends to his line and length and hit Reeza Hendricks in front of the stumps for a golden duck. In fact, it was his simple yet effective tactics of bowling at the wickets paid high dividends as Tanzim cleaned up South Africa captain Aiden Markram (4), who missed a straight one with his bat coming down a bit awkwardly. Tristan Stubbs (0) had done a fine job of rebuilding the innings for South Africa in their last outing against the Netherlands, but the right-hander too had a soft dismissal to endure. Klaasen hit a couple of sixes upfront against Bangladesh spinners to push them back while Miller was content in rotating the strike. However, he was cleaned up by Taskin late in the innings after a 44-ball knock, studded with two fours and three sixes. Klaasen and Miller did find run-scoring difficult on the Nassau County pitch since they were forced to curb their attacking instinct.

IPL 2024 | Didn’t think I had to bat, was having my cappuccino: Dinesh Karthik on finishing RCB vs GT

Dinesh Karthik revealed how he had to turn into RCB’s saviour yet again after initially not thinking he would need to bat during the match against GT at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on May 4, Saturday. Karthik calmed down RCB’s nerves and guided them to a 4-wicket win against Gujarat. RCB continue to keep their playoff hopes alive as they registered their 3rd win in a row. While speaking to the broadcasters, Karthik revealed that he was having a cup of cappuccino and did not think that he had to bat and was in a pretty chilled out mood. Karthik suggested that he was not mentally prepared and when wickets started tumbling, he had to be ready. “Started with a cup of tea and then after about 4 overs, I had a cappuccino and thought I wasn’t going to bat. I wasn’t padded up, I wasn’t mentally ready, I was just chilling. And then, things happened, and I had to pad up. I was a touch late but managed to make it. It’s a very different sort of pressure, it’s one thing about chasing down totals in an interesting way and all you need to think about is hitting boundaries.” IPL 2024, RCB vs GT: Highlights | Report After getting off to a blazing start, when RCB were at 92 for 1 in the first 6 overs, they started to fall like a pack of cards. RCB went onto lose 6 wickets in a span of 25 runs as they were reduced to 117 for 6. IPL 2024 Full Coverage | IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings | 2024 IPL Full Schedule HOW KARTHIK HELPED RCB CHASE 148 RUNS Karthik opened upon how he approached the chase after RCB looked in a bit of trouble. He emphasised playing with a bit of caution as RCB had a lot of balls left to chase the target. He also mentioned that it was a good toss to win as the wicket had some moisture. “But if there’s a lot of time, and you need to make sure that you are playing sensibly, it is also the need of the hour, basic cricketing skills come through. Over a period of time, that’s been my strength, so I backed myself. The pitch was initially good to bowl on, being under the covers for so long, there was a bit of moisture. It was sticky, good toss to win, and we bowled very well,” Karthik said. Karthik played a quickfire knock of 21 runs from 12 balls to help RCB cross the line. He had come to bat in the 10th over when RCB needed only 35 runs to win the match. Karthik credited the bowlers for restricting GT to a below-par total of 147 runs, which was crucial to RCB winning the match. He lauded the 92-run stand between Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli, in which the duo went ballistic and set up the win for RCB. “Got to give credit to the bowlers. The way Faf and Virat batted, I don’t think you could have played some kind of shots if you were batting first. I enjoyed how they went about things.” Karthik also revealed his chat with young batter Swapnil Singh, who finished the match with a six for RCB. Karthik said how he backed Swapnil to face GT spinner Noor Ahmed and was impressed with his batting. “I told Swapnil to play for the ball that comes in. He asked me if sweep is a good option and I said, ‘If you feel sweep is a good option, back yourself to do it but commit to your shot.’ Then he executed those two sweep shots, which was really good and that was the need of the hour in a way,” Karthik said. SRH Stars Irritated By Over-Enthusiastic Fans, Social Media Blasts IPL Franchise For Security Risk. Watch

A video of over-enthusiastic fans mobbing SunRisers Hyderabad stars Heinrich Klaasen and Jaydev Unadkat is going viral on social media. The team is currently in great form in the IPL 2024 and are fourth in the points table. Sunrisers, in this edition of the IPL, have been a force to reckon with. Their power-hitting, thanks to the likes of Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen, have made them set new records. They now have the record of highest total in IPL history. In the video which is going viral on social media, it can be seen that the SRH duo are not quite amused by the fans, as they pushed them. Absolute madness! Poor Klaassen getting harassed by the crowd… But how did SRH management allow such a huge number of fans without any safety precautions? pic.twitter.com/B5pECptXDz — Vipin Tiwari (@Vipintiwari952_) May 4, 2024 The craze for Heinrich Klaasen in India. pic.twitter.com/HNluV65fn6 — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) April 30, 2024 Meanwhile, Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson hailed young Indian uncapped all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, saying that he is one of his favourite players to watch and lauded his dominance over the experienced spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin against Rajasthan Royals (RR).Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) youngster Nitish’s climb-up during this IPL continued as he fired a quickfire 76* in 42 balls, with three fours and eight sixes. SRH secured a one-run win over RR at Hyderabad despite fifties from Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal on Thursday. Speaking to the JioCinema after the game, Watson said about Nitish, “Yeah, he is becoming one of my favourite cricketers to watch for sure. For a young man to be able to exert his dominance on a spin bowling attack, especially of Yuzi Chahal and Ashwin and some of the shots, in fact all of the shots that he played tonight were of a rare quality. For a young man to have that skill development at such a young age and to execute under pressure against the best bowlers in the world.” Watson called the SRH youngster a “special talent” that has once again found its way to stardom because of the IPL, a league known to bring “young Indian hyper-skilled cricketers” to limelight. “He is a very special talent. So, like it happens with the IPL, every single year, there is always a couple of young Indian hyper-skilled cricketers that come through and burst onto the scene and that is the reason why Indian cricket has got an abundance of talent that is always gonna be found through and Nitish Reddy is one of those,” Watson added. "Australia May Not Need Me": David Warner On Playing 2025 Champions Trophy

“Australia May Not Need Me”: David Warner On Playing 2025 Champions Trophy

Port of Spain : The seasoned Australia batter David Warner is aiming for a spectacular finish on his final lap as an international player, saying that Aussies will play “fearless” cricket during the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup to create a unique piece of history. The veteran opener also feels Australia may not need him for the 2025 Champions Trophy. Warner announced his retirement from the longer formats of the game, and he left the door open for a possible return to the next major ICC event if the Men in Yellow require an opening batter. Although he announced his retirement from the longer formats of the game, he left the door ajar for a potential return to the next major ICC event, should the Men in Yellow need an opening batter. After winning the World Test Championship and one-day World Cup in the previous 12 months, Australia is aiming for cricket’s grand slam at the T20 World Cup, which has been enlarged to 20 nations. It will be played in the West Indies and the United States throughout June, with all of Australia’s matches taking place in the Caribbean. The 37-year-old Warner is one of just four players with a chance of becoming the first team to win three International Cricket Council trophies at the same time, alongside Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Travis Head. “Being part of that potential history, you only sit back and reflect on those things when you’re completely done and dusted,” Warner, who is in Trinidad, said as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald. “I did an interview with the ICC recently asking me about it and all the tournaments I’ve been a part of, and I can’t remember them all, but it’s been great,” he added. However, he continues to indicate that it may not be the end, citing the ICC’s revived Champions Trophy, a mini-World Cup slated for Pakistan next year. “They may not need me,” he added with a laugh. Warner was unable to complete this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) due to injury in his left hand but demonstrated his fitness with 54 from 21 balls in a practice match against Namibia in Trinidad last week. However, he will not play until Australia’s first match, against Oman in Barbados on Thursday. His farewell from the big stage has been quite a trip. Australia defeated India in India to win the ODI World Cup in November, he said goodbye to the conventional game at the Sydney Test in January, and he will most likely say goodbye to T20 internationals in the Caribbean. Whenever the star batter does go, Warner is bound to go out all guns blazing against any team face. “We’ve always played fearless and I think that’s why we’ve been so successful over the last few years. We don’t care about our spot in a team, we just care about doing the best that we can, and making sure that whatever we’re doing, we’re trying to be that match winner,” he said. “And the fortunate thing is that we’ve got so many of them. One might come off one day, the next day someone else will come off. So we just know that one person in that top six, if they can get anywhere between 60 to 80 runs at a good strike rate, we know we’re always going to post a good total. It’s the same with the new ball. If Starcy [Mitchell Starc] is swinging the ball, we’ll get early wickets, and that brings the spinners into the game,” he added. Warner believes Australia’s emphatic World Cup victory over India late last year, followed by a great performance against South Africa in the semi-final, has given them a “upper edge” over other teams. “If you look at the way that we performed with our backs up against the wall after the first couple of games [losing badly to India and South Africa], you just never count us out,” he said.
