‘In my cricket life, MS Dhoni plays my father’s role’: Matheesha Pathirana reserves highest praise for CSK legend

MS Dhoni’s cricketing prowess is world-renowned, but perhaps equally remarkable is his knack for nurturing young talent. Since becoming the Indian captain for the first time in 2007, Dhoni has played a pivotal role in cultivating a rich pool of Indian cricketers, propelling the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to batting stardom, among numerous others. This talent cultivation extends seamlessly to the IPL; under Dhoni’s astute leadership, Chennai Super Kings have clinched a record 5 titles, witnessing the transformation of budding talents like Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja into world-class cricketers. Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana is among the first names in his national team’s playing XI in limited-overs formats, but MS Dhoni was among the first ones to spot him. It was at CSK where Pathirana first announced his arrival to the cricketing fraternity in 2022, eventually making his national debut the same year. In an interaction with CSK on their official YouTube account, Pathirana showed his immense gratitude to Dhoni for propelling his career. Labelling him a father figure in his cricketing life, Pathirana said Dhoni has always supported him. “After my father, in my cricket life, he (Dhoni) plays my father’s role. He takes care of me, and he gives me advice on what I have to do, similar to my father’s thing when I’m at my home. I think that’s enough,” said Pathirana. “He doesn’t tell me a lot of things when I’m on the field and off the field, but he tells just small things that make a lot of difference and gives me a lot of confidence. He knows how to maintain the players. Off the field, we don’t talk much, but if I have to ask something from him, definitely I’d go to him and ask him,” Pathirana said further. Pathirana’s impact at CSK Pathirana was crucial to CSK’s success in the previous edition of the IPL, where he picked 19 wickets in 12 matches and helped the side win a record-equalling fifth title. This year, too, Pathirana has been brilliant for the side so far; in six matches, the Sri Lankan has taken 13 wickets and is in the top ten in the Purple Cap list.

Riyan Parag's strong belief, says 'at some point, I'm going to play for India' | Cricket News

Riyan Parag’s strong belief, says ‘at some point, I’m going to play for India’ | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: To some, it might appear as extreme arrogance, but when Riyan Parag looks you in the eye and declares, “I am going to play for India no matter what,” it’s a testament to his immense self-belief in his own skill set and abilities.“At some point, you’ll have to take me, right? So that is my belief, I’m going to play for India. I don’t really care when,” Parag stated confidently during his exclusive interaction with PTI on Wednesday. No youngster has polarized opinions as quickly as the 22-year-old from Assam, who had a breakout IPL season, amassing 573 runs at a strike rate close to 150 while batting at No.4 for the Rajasthan Royals. In his previous five years in the IPL, Riyan, a 2018 U-19 World Cup winner, never even reached a 200-run season. He faced harsh criticism on social media as he transitioned from boyhood to manhood.“When I was not scoring runs – I said this in an earlier interview as well – that I am going to play for India,” Parag reiterated on the sidelines of a Red Bull Campus Cricket tournament in Mumbai on Wednesday, a tournament he praised for giving exposure to talented youngsters.“That is me believing in myself. That is not me being arrogant. That was my plan with my dad (former Railways and Assam player Parag Das) when I started playing cricket at around 10 years old. We (a joint project) were going to play for India regardless of anything.”Riyan, Abhishek Sharma, and Harshit Rana have a high likelihood of being selected for the upcoming cricket tour in Zimbabwe.“Whether it’s the next tour, whether it’s a tour in six months, whether it’s a tour in one year… I don’t really put my thought behind when I should play. That is the selector’s job, that is other people’s job,” Riyan said.Having learned the hard way about the downsides of social media, he has stopped taking things to heart.“You’ve got to be very quick and very sharp when reacting to things. Social media and all of that play a big part with mental pressure. Because once you start listening to those things… it always starts in a merry way, right?,” he asked.“Once you start performing, people really hype you up. Once you start reading that, you get that satisfaction of listening to other people or watching other things.”This year’s IPL served as a testament to his belonging at the elite level.“But what I’ve figured out in the last year or two is that I’ve got to have an undeniable stack of proof that I belong at this level. Which means (that) me practising a lot, me practising at that level, practicing those situations,” Parag said. What has been his biggest takeaway from the season.“The biggest thing that I’ve taken away from the last season is that believing in yourself actually works out, because a lot of people say a lot of different things, whether it’s negative, whether it’s positive. But at the end of the day, what matters is what you think about yourself and that is what I’ve been for,” he said.Since his debut season with the Rajasthan Royals in 2018, Riyan’s performance over the past five seasons has been disappointing, with his totals reading 160, 86, 93, 183, and 78.“I had a lot of rough seasons, more than (the) nice ones and I feel having that constant belief in yourself, that you actually belong in this level, that you can actually do things that you (had) dreamt of, has been a constant and that will stay throughout.”“What you saw this year in the IPL is how I play domestic cricket. I take the onus up to myself, I take the expectations, I take the burden upon myself to deliver and that is why I play the best,” he said.So what changed from previous years?“I was not doing that in the IPL. I was taking way too much pressure, keeping my expectations way too high and not doing the basic things right.”Additionally, playing at a crucial No. 4 slot for RR also worked.“That is what I figured (that) I had to do this year; of playing at my favourite position as well, No 4 . I was like, okay, “I do this at domestic cricket, this is the same thing I’m going to do in IPL and let’s see how it goes”. It worked out perfectly,” he said.During a substantial period in this IPL season, RR enjoyed a commendable streak, only to see their momentum wane as they reached the playoffs, ultimately securing the third position. Parag conceded that there’s still a tinge of disappointment hanging in the air.“”I’m still dealing with it. I got back home and I was super sad. The night after the game, it didn’t really sink in. But then the day after the match, and before the final, it was tough,” he said.“It’s tough, but then that’s how cricket goes. There are world-class sides that are playing the tournament, world-class players that are playing the tournament,” Parag added.(With PTI inputs)

T20 World Cup: India look to assess pitch and second fast-bowling option in only warm-up game | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Yashasvi Jaiswal will strive to contribute to the team’s combination puzzle with a valuable performance, while Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj must showcase their best efforts during India’s sole T20 World Cup warm-up match against Bangladesh before their tournament opener on June 5.Despite all 15 players being regular starters for their respective IPL teams, the squad boasts an abundance of talent. However, discovering the optimal combination will be crucial to ending India’s 11-year international trophy drought. In the warm-up game, it is anticipated that all 14 players, except for Virat Kohli, who is expected to arrive sometime before the practice match, will be given an opportunity to play, as the game does not have official status. This will provide a chance to assess each player’s form after most of the core team members enjoyed a two-week break.Captain Rohit Sharma and departing head coach Rahul Dravid will need to make two critical decisions. Even if Jaiswal is in good form, integrating him into the team will be challenging, as it would require leaving out a power-hitter like Shivam Dube from the playing XI.It is a foregone conclusion that Jaiswal might have to sit out, allowing Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to open the batting. This decision could also create an opportunity for Dube to feature later in the tournament.“Shivam Dube is a six-hitting machine. He can be the ‘x-factor’ in the T20 World Cup. But if Shivam has to be in the XI, then you can’t play Yashasvi. Rohit has to take that call and I prefer both pace-bowling all-rounders in the XI. If Shivam plays, he can take on the opposition wrist spinners in the latter half,” Suresh Raina, one of India’s premier T20 batters of his time, said on Friday when asked about a possible combination.India’s second challenge will be identifying Jasprit Bumrah‘s opening pace-bowling partner. Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj have been inconsistent in the IPL, and their performances have not met expectations.RP Singh, a key player in India’s victory in the first edition, believes that Hardik Pandya‘s four overs will be crucial. Furthermore, he suggests that Arshdeep should be the second frontline pacer on the newly-installed drop-in pitch.Discussing the ideal length to bowl on the US pitches during early morning starts, Singh emphasized the importance of variations, which make Arshdeep a better bet compared to Siraj.“As per my understanding, there should be a bit of slowness in the wicket. So, the ideal length will be somewhere around just short of good length. There will not be a lot of swing for the bowlers but the bowlers with variations, not only yorkers but also slower ones, leg and off cutters…,” RP replied to a PTI query during a promotional event in Delhi.“These deliveries will be utilised a bit more by Arshdeep, so the success rate will be automatically higher for him and that’s what I understand the wickets in the US,” he explained.Facing Bangladesh on a pitch that offers less pace, India’s middle-order batsmen will be tested by the spin duo of Shakib Al Hasan and Mahedi Hasan. Additionally, they will need to find answers to the variations posed by cutter master Mustafizur Rahaman.(With PTI inputs)

Fixing-Tainted Pakistan Pacer Faces Visa Issues For Travelling To This Country

Pakistan’s first T20 international against Ireland is on May 10.© AFP Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir may not be able to leave with the national squad on Tuesday morning for the three-match T20 series in Ireland due to visa issues. A reliable source in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that while the rest of the squad had got their visas for Ireland, there was a delay in Amir’s case due to the jail term he served for the 2010 spot-fixing scandal. “Because of the spot-fixing case of 2010 and his subsequent jail term and ban his visa is still being processed,” the source said. He said a similar problem was faced by the PCB in 2018 as well when Pakistan went to Ireland and England but Amir was later issued a visa. “We are hopeful he will get his visa in a day or two and he can join them later,” he said. Pakistan’s first T20 international against Ireland is on May 10. (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) Topics mentioned in this article

SL vs NZ Match Prediction & Analysis Host Sri Lanka will be looking to continue their winning ways when they take on New Zealand in the opening match of the T20I series played at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla on Saturday. Under new head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka has put together a number of good results across all formats. Captain Charith Asalanka will be hoping that the side can deliver a clinical performance with bat and ball in this fixture. On the other hand, New Zealand will be making their return to the T20 format after almost five months. Interim captain Mitchell Santner will be hoping that the side can adjust to the conditions and put on a decent show against Islanders. TEAMS PREVIEW Sri Lanka Preview In the batting department, the side will be relying on the likes of Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Kamindu Mendis, captain Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa to deliver the bulk of the runs. Since Jun 2004, Pathum Nissanka has topped the batting charts for Sri Lanka in the T20 Format. In nine matches played, Nissanka has accumulated 291 runs at a strike rate of 133.48 with two half-centuries to his name. New Zealand Preview In the batting department, the side will be depending on the likes of Glenn Phillips, Dean Foxcroft, Mark Chapman, Tim Robinson and Mitchell Hay to deliver the bulk of the runs. In the bowling department, the side will be relying on the likes of Zak Foulkes, Mitchell Santner, Lockie Ferguson, Jacob Duffy, and Ish Sodhi to deliver timely breakthroughs. The highest total posted here is Afghanistan’s 209 for 5 against Sri Lanka. The match was won by Afghanistan by just three runs. The weather forecast for Saturday’s game is far from ideal as thundery showers are expected to take place during the course of the match. Bangladesh Women vs South Africa Women, ICCWWC__T20, Today Match Prediction

𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇 : Bangladesh vs South Africa Women’s 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄 : Oct 12, Saturday𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 : 19:30 PM IST𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐔𝐄 : Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, United Arab Emirates 𝐓𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 : ICC Womens T20 World Cup, 2024 Bangladesh Women have managed just two wins over South Africa Women across 13 T20Is.  India vs Bangladesh TV channels: The fans can watch the match live on Hotstar Live Streaming: Live streaming of the match will be available on the FAFA191 Cricket Exchange India and website. BANW vs RSAW Match Prediction & Analysis South Africa Women will look to secure their place in the top two in Group B as they take on Bangladesh Women at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium this Saturday in the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. South Africa are currently in the number two position with 4 points from three games and a net run rate of 1.527. However, England Women and West Indies Women, who are at number three and one, respectively, are breathing down their necks. Therefore, the South Africans will be looking to register a thumping win in this game to remain in the top two. TEAMS PREVIEW Bangladesh Preview Bangladesh Women started the tournament with an impressive win over Sri Lanka Women. However, two back-to-back defeats – against England and West Indies – have jolted their chances of going ahead. Their NRR too stands at a poor -0.835 and now they have virtually no hope of making it to the semis.  South Africa Preview After a crushing loss against England, South Africa Women got their campaign back on track with a dominating 80-run victory over Scotland Women. That win has boosted South Africa’s chances of qualifying for the semi-finals. But with two more teams in the fray, they need to secure a big win here to give themselves the best shot at qualification. Weather Conditions The slow and spin-friendly pitch at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium is set to pose a challenge for batters. The surface offers considerable assistance to spin bowlers, allowing the ball to grip and turn in their favor. As a result, batters will need to employ a more cautious approach, focusing on hitting through the gaps rather than relying on powerful strokes. The most favorable time for batting will be during the powerplay overs, where the pitch is relatively more responsive. If they can set a tempo early on and not lose many wickets, then the batting team can post a healthy total. However, as the game progresses and the pitch slows down, batting will become increasingly demanding. The weather in Dubai during the match will be hot and humid. There is no chance of rain, so we will get a full game. BANW vs RSAW Pitch Report This is likely to be another low-scoring game. The pitch is slow, and the boundaries are long. Scoring fours and sixes won’t be easy. If Bangladesh bat first, they will hope to touch a score of 120 or thereabouts, provided they bat well. Batting isn’t their main strength, so they can also struggle to cross 100 runs if their top-order doesn’t fire. Toss: To Bat At the time of writing, two of three evening matches played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in this World Cup have been won comfortably by the team batting first. Thus, we reckon both teams will look to bat first here.

"It's A Shame": AB De Villiers On Racial Quota Chatter Around South Africa's T20 World Cup Squad

“It’s A Shame”: AB De Villiers On Racial Quota Chatter Around South Africa’s T20 World Cup Squad

AB De Villiers is not surprised that just days before South Africa renews its quest for an elusive World Cup, the talk back home is all about racial quota in the team. It’s a rinse-and-repeat sort of situation and de Villiers, who retired in 2018, is glad that he is a mere spectator to the situation now. “…it’s a shame going into a tournament to have the focus on that. I mean it’s nothing new, it’s just a shame,” lamented one of the greats of South African cricket. “Luckily this time around, I’ve had nothing to do with anything over there. I’m just a spectator,” the 40-year-old said in an interaction with PTI facilitated by ‘Jio Cinema’. The cause of outrage is the presence of just one black player in the squad for the T20 showpiece that will take place in the Americas from June 1. Considered the perennial bridesmaids, who tend to choke in crunch situations, South Africa somehow are always in the pre-tournament favourites bracket without actually living up to the tag. And having a deeply divisive topic take centre-stage just days before they begin their campaign is a far-from-ideal build-up for a country that has a troubled past when it comes to race relations. The Proteas will start off against the Netherlands in New York on June 8. Over the course of a season, six players of colour are required to be in the South Africa playing eleven including two from the black African community as per the policy introduced in 2016. With Kagiso Rabada being the only black African in the T20 World Cup squad, the national team is set to miss its target. Another black-African, Lungi Ngidi, is part of the travelling reserves. The other players of colour include Reeza Hendricks, Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi and Ottniel Baartman. “There are controversial moments back home as per usual with the South African squad just before a World Cup,” de Villiers said. “I think it’s a good team. It’s a shame about Lungi… (he) lost a bit of form, had a couple of injuries. Otherwise, he most probably would have been in the squad and there wouldn’t have been any controversial stuff back home,” he added. At the moment, Cricket South Africa doesn’t have a committee of selectors and the team is picked by head coaches Shukri Conrad (Tests) and Rob Walter (white-ball cricket). “Sometimes these things happen and it puts you under a bit of pressure as a selection panel and as a coach and a captain,” de Villiers said. “From what I remember is with the quota system, it’s an average team, an average number over the season and they don’t really look at every series, but as journalists sometimes enjoy steaming up things a bit,” he tried to put things in context. Following the selection of the squad earlier this month, former Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and former CSA and ICC president Ray Mali questioned the composition of the side. “Only one African player selected in the Proteas Team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 Team. Definitely a reserval (reversal) of the gains of transformation and doesn’t reflect fair representation of all South Africans in the national cricket tea,” Mbalula wrote on X. On SABC Sport, Mali said the game is heading backwards in the country. “I believe a lot has been achieved, but I believe we have gone backwards in terms of cricket – we have taken a step backwards instead of going forward,” said Mali. But de Villiers was a bit more empathetic towards those who made the choices and said he does not see anything sinister in the process. “Maybe they are short. Maybe they are well within their right to do whatever they were needed to do in this World Cup. “Keeping in mind there were a couple of injuries, a couple of out of form players. It’s never easy,” he said. On the upside, South Africa’s IPL stars have displayed ominous form in the preceding T20 league and that would surely give them confidence to go the distance in the World Cup too. Impact Player rule in IPL needs to be relooked ============================ Talking about the recently-concluded IPL, de Villiers said the Impact Player rule , which helped teams amass 250-plus totals as many as eight times this season, needs to be revised. “…what I really didn’t enjoy about the rule is actually subbing players who have already taken part in the game. That part of the rule doesn’t make sense. I feel it needs to be a fair swap. “If someone hasn’t taken part in the game, he needs to be swapped. If you feel that you are going to lack in the bowling or batting department, it’ll just make it a bit harder to strategise and it’ll be more of a risk to swap someone.” He also wants more than two fielders outside the ring in the powerplay. “I still feel T20 cricket needs to be a batters game, that’s why the fans come to the parks. They want to see the ball flying all over the park and into the night sky,” he said. “But I still you still want to see the bowlers outsmart batters sometimes…in the first six overs by maybe easing up on the restrictions. “Whether that’s four or five outside, I don’t know exactly but at least the bowler can plan,” he reasoned.  Topics mentioned in this article
