Faf du Plessis and Vijaykumar Vyshak shone as RCB registered their third consecutive win of the season to boost their playoff chances. Vyshak and Yash Dayal produced brilliant bowling performances to bowl out Gujarat to 147 while bowling first. Opens Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis then gave RCB a sensational start by adding 92 runs for the opening wicket in just 35 balls. Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans made a strong comeback with Joshua Little claiming four big wickets and Noor Ahmad dismissing Virat Kohli. But Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh’s late cameos boosted Bengaluru to a crucial win with 38 balls remaining. A win boosted Bengaluru to seventh position in the points table with four wins in eleven matches while Gujarat slipped to ninth spot with eight points.  After being forced to bat first, Gujarat lost their top order in powerplay overs with Mohammed Siraj claiming big wickets of Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha. Gujarat made a comeback with David Miller and Shahrukh Khan scorching 61 runs for the fourth wicket with the latter top-scoring with 37 runs off 24 balls.  Bengaluru made a late comeback with Yash Dayal and Vijaykumar Vyshak claiming two wickets each to bowl out Gujarat to a 147 total in 19.3 overs.  Chasing a low-scoring target, RCB openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis exploded from the very beginning. The veteran duo added 92 runs in just 35 balls for the opening wicket with du Plessis smashing an 18-ball fifty, the second fastest for Bengaluru in their IPL history. Joshua Little, playing his first match of the IPL 2024, gave Gujarat a breakthrough in the sixth over with du Plessis’ wicket and that led to Bengaluru’s unexpected collapse. Bengaluru went 92/0 to 117/6 within flash seconds with the Irish pacer taking four wickets and Noor Ahmad removing Virat Kohli who scored crucial 42 runs off 27 balls. But Bengaluru avoided further collapse with Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh adding unbeaten 35 runs for the seventh wicket. Bipin Singh’s Brilliance Denies Mohun Bagan Super Giant Once Again, Mumbai City FC Bag Second ISL Title With 3-1 Comeback Win

Bipin Singh came to haunt Mohun Bagan once again as a gritty Mumbai City FC rode on the midfielder’s strike to secure a stunning 3-1 comeback win and grab the ISL title for a second time in front of a partisan Salt Lake Stadium crowd in Kolkata on Saturday. In front of 62,007-strong crowd, the home side roared into the lead with Jason Cummings (44th) strike at the stroke of half-time. But the Islanders levelled things up when Jorge Pereyra Diaz (53rd) silenced the crowd from Alberto Noguera’s magnificent straight pass from the midfield. Their moment of reckoning came in the 81st minute as Bipin came off the bench to score the decisive second goal to help Mumbai snatch the lead. It was Bipin’s 90th minute strike that had helped Mumbai City FC win their maiden title in 2020-21 when they overturned an identical 1-0 lead to down Mohun Bagan 2-1. Nine minutes were added to the second-half, and Mohun Bagan had enough time to bring on the equaliser but their forwards lacked the sting and the Islanders nailed the final nail in the coffin with a 90 7th minute strike by subsitute Jakub Vojtus. It also crushed Mohun Bagan’s dream of becoming the first team to defend the ISL Cup and complete a rare double of winning the League Winners Shield and the title. Sergio Lobera-coached Mumbai City FC had achieved the rare feat in their memorable 2020-21 season. But it was not a day for Mohun Bagan’s shrewd 66-year-old Spaniard tactician Antonio Lopez Habas who appeared in a record fourth ISL final. Three weeks after the Islanders failed to defend the Shield going down to the same team 1-2 at the same venue, the Petr Kratky-coached side dished out a much-improved show right from the start. They controlled the possession and initiated a flurry of attacks with Lallianzuala Chhangte in the thick of things, and also hit the post twice in the first half-an-hour’s play. In the 30th minute, Chhangte whipped in a freekick from an angle as it sailed over a scrambling Vishal Kaith, only to hit the crossbar and bounce out. A couple of minutes later, Chhangte outpaced Subhasish Bose, receiving a through ball. Instead of shooting, he passed it back into the six-yard box, but there were no Mumbai men to tap the ball in. Kaith and the Subhasish Bose-led defence stayed under pressure, dealing with Mumbai’s attacking threats. Suddenly, Mohun Bagan lifted the atmosphere by storming into the lead. Liston Colaco played a precise pass to Dimitri Petratos who unleashed a thunderous strike from 40 yards out as Lachenpa flapped it back into the six yard box in a sloppy goalkeeping effort. Cometh the hour, cometh the man, Mohun Bagan’s chief marksman Jason Cummings sprang into action latching onto the loose ball and calmly chipped it over Phurba Lachenpa with his effortless left-footer. But the lead did not last long as Mumbai equalised soon after the break. A special mention should go to Spaniard Alberto Noguera for his pinpoint accuracy in delivering a sublime pass from the midfield straight into the box. The Mohun Bagan defence was caught off guard by it as the Argentine forward seized the opportunity, effortlessly bypassing Manvir Singh without Anwar Ali to contend with. With a deft left-footed touch, Diaz calmly slotted the ball past Kaith, who stretched out his left leg in a desperate attempt to save, but to no avail. Three years after he struck the winner in a close-door final at Margao, Bipin once again made the difference after he came on the field replacing Noguera in the 69th minute. Chhangte dodged past Joni Kauko and took a weak shot, but Bipin’s second attempt deflected off Hector Yuste and into the net, securing the decisive goal. Jakub capitalised on Bipin’s hold-up play, receiving the ball and calmly passing it to Vikram Pratap Singh, who then set up Bipin for a shot blocked by Anwar. However, Jakub pounced on the rebound and fired it past the fallen defender to seal the issue. Angry Sunil Gavaskar Blasts Virat Kohli's Rant. Says, "Don't Have Agenda, Why Are You Replying To Outside Noise"

Angry Sunil Gavaskar Blasts Virat Kohli’s Rant. Says, “Don’t Have Agenda, Why Are You Replying To Outside Noise”

Sunil Gavaskar, former Indian cricket team captain, on Saturday launched a never-heard-before attack on Virat Kohli for his recent comments about critics. “Not really, all the people who talk about strike-rates and me not playing spin well are the ones talking about this stuff. For me, it’s about winning the games for the team and there’s a reason why you’ve done it for 15 years, you’ve done this day in and day out, you’ve won games for your teams, I’m not quite sure that if you haven’t been in that situation yourself, to sit and talk about the game in the box. For me, people can talk about their assumptions day in and day out, but those who have done day in and day out, they know what’s happening and it’s a kind of muscle memory for me now,” Kohli said after an IPL match. Sunil Gavaskar referred to the interview ahead of the RCB vs GT match on Saturday and launched a scathing attack. The batting legend felt that such comments was a direct insult to the knowledge of the former cricketers who are working as experts. Throughout the rant by Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli’s visuals were being shown in split screen. “Commentators questioned only when his strike rate was 118. I’m not too sure. I don’t watch too many matches, so I don’t know what the other commentators have said otherwise. But if you come and open and then have a strike of 118 when you get out in the 14th or the 15th over, I mean, if you want applause for that, that’s a little bit different. That’s different,,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports. Gavaskar owning kohli pic.twitter.com/g5j2WiVtJW — ‘ (@Dhoniverse_) May 4, 2024 He added that stars like Kohli should not bother to respond on ‘outside noise’ if they don’t care about it. “All these guys talk about, ‘oh we don’t care about outside noise’. Accha! Then why are you replying to any outside noise or whatever it is. We all played a bit of cricket, not a lot of cricket. We don’t have agendas. We speak about what we see. We don’t necessarily have any likes and dislikes. Even if we have likes and dislikes, we actually speak on what is happening,” Gavaskar said. So according to Gavaskar saab, no matter how much people cry on kohli everyday Kohli shouldn’t reply his critics pic.twitter.com/9yiAYtXrg8 — POTT (@KlolZone) May 4, 2024 The former Indian cricket team skipper even criticised IPL’s official broadcasters for showing Kohli’s interview time and again. “I hope Star Sports realises that when that clip is shown, questioning the critics, the critics are your own commentators. For you to show the person belittling your own commentators, I’m not sure that’s a great thing. You need to realise you have shown it enough times, everybody’s got the message. I would be very disappointed if you show it once more.” Topics mentioned in this article

"Big Mistake, Lost 9 Years": Pakistan Star, Targetting T20 World Cup Return, On Spot-Fixing Saga

“Big Mistake, Lost 9 Years”: Pakistan Star, Targetting T20 World Cup Return, On Spot-Fixing Saga

Having served five years of suspension and another four years of international hiatus, Mohammed Amir is sick and tired of former Pakistani stars time and again bringing up his involvement in the infamous spot-fixing scandal that rocked the cricket world in 2010. “I have done penance for that big mistake and if you look at my career I was banned from 2010 to 2015 and took retirement from 2020 to 2024 so I have lost nine years but I accept it all as God’s will and I have moved on,” Amir told mediapersons. Amir, who was only 19 back in 2010, had deliberately over-stepped along with fellow pacer Mohammed Asif at the behest of former skipper Salman Butt and they were all caught in a ‘News of the World’ expose. All three were briefly jailed in UK, where fixing is a crime but were later released. The ICC banned them for five years between 2010 to 2015. Only Amir made a successful return to international cricket and was hero of Pakistan’s Champions Trophy triumph over India in 2017 in the UK. However in 2020, he retired from all forms of international cricket after his differences with erstwhile PCB chief Ramiz Raja came out in the open. Ramiz and some of the other Pakistani players have been vocal about Pakistan cricket establishment giving him a second chance after his direct involvement in corruption. He has also faced lot of criticism for being brought out of retirement and directly given entry into Pakistan team without playing domestic cricket. “There has been a lot of criticism by some people on me and Imad being selected without playing domestic cricket,” he added. Amir countered the critics by making it clear that PSL is a domestic tournment where he and another comeback man Imad Wasim have regularly played. “I ask them what is Pakistan’s premier domestic T20 event? The PSL. And both of us (Imad) have played and performed in the PSL besides appearing regularly in other leagues. So what is wrong with selecting us for the T20 format.? Amir said if the selectors had picked them for Tests or ODIs it would have been very wrong. “I myself have always said players must get experience in domestic first class and other events to be considered for the national team. But in our case we are only playing T20 cricket and our form and fitness is there for all to see.” He also confirmed that former Test captain, Muhammad Hafeez had called up him last year and inquired whether he would consider coming out of his retirement. “It was nice of him (he was director of Pakistan team) and he said I could still play for Pakistan but I told him that given the uncertainty in the cricket board and team I would prefer to remain out of international cricket.” (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.) Spot-on RCB bowlers limit Gujarat Titans to below-par 147

Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans, preyed on by a sporting pitch, accurate Royal Challengers Bengaluru bowlers and their own inhibitions, laboured to a modest 147 all out in the Indian Premier League match here on Saturday. Spot-on RCB bowlers limit Gujarat Titans to below-par 147 There were a couple of good partnerships – 61 between David Miller and Shahrukh Khan and 44 by Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan – but the Titans lacked that one big innings or a stand that could have given them a firmer grip on the match. Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Download Now! In fact, they seemed distinctly incapable of accelerating even in the Power Play as their top-order batters struggled against RCB pacers, Mohammed Siraj and Yash Dayal who stuck to a wonderful length on a pitch that offered good carry and bounce. That GT managed to strike just two fours in the Power Play segment offered ample evidence to their struggle and RCB bowlers’ accuracy. The Gujarat side’s Power Play score of 23 for three was the lowest in the segment this season, and it was mainly due to Siraj’s domination upfront. Coming off a short-break, the pacer looked a far improved version of himself after the struggles of initial stages where he sprayed the ball all around. He consumed Wriddhiman Saha with a fine outswinger which the GT opener wafted to Dinesh Karthik behind the stumps. Shubman Gill followed soon as his attempted swat to the on-side of Siraj took a leading edge and ended in the hands of Vysakh Vijayakumar at deep point. Cameron Green fetched the third wicket for RCB in the Power Play when he jettisoned in-form B Sai Sudharsan, whose feeble pull close to the body was snaffled by Virat Kohli at mid-off. Once their top two run-getters of the season walked back to the dugout, the rest of the batters needed to step up big time for GT to reach a competitive total. Miller and Shahrukh tried their best to drag GT out of the woods with a well-paced 61-run alliance off 37 balls for the fourth wicket. Miller was even fortunate to get dropped on 23 off Green by Karn Sharma near square leg, did play some archetypal power shots. He punished leg-spinner Karn for a couple of sixes – a pull and a loft over extra cover – but fell to the same bowler when a miscued heave was grabbed by Glenn Maxwell at deep. But a bigger misfortune was in store for the visitors as Shahrukh, who backed up a tad too far to Rahul Tewatia’s soft drop, could not beat a throw from Kohli to the non-striker’s end. For the sixth-wicket, Tewatia and Rashid added 44 off 29 balls, but the latter’s desire to be innovative against Yash Dayal saw the ball crashing onto the stumps. Tewatia, who punished Karn for 18 runs in the 16th over, too perished soon as GT limped to a below-par total. Star batter Virat Kohli stole the limelight again as he produced a stellar direct hit to run out settled Shahrukh Khan. After losing the toss, Gujarat were forced to bat first and lost the top order in powerplay overs with just 19 runs on the scoreboard. But David Miller and Shahrukh Khan added 61 runs for the fourth wicket to put Gujarat on a track for a challenging total. Karn Sharma gave Bengaluru a breakthrough with Miller’s big wicket in the 12th over and then Virat Kohli showed his well-known fielding skills with a sensational throw to run out Shahrukh Khan in the 13th over.
