The first Test between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan at Bulawayo ended in a high-scoring draw with both teams scoring bountiful runs on a placid surface. The two teams will meet again for the second and final Test of the series at the same venue beginning January 2. With the pitch expected to be similar to the first Test, we are in for another run-fest.

Zimbabwe Preview

Zimbabwe’s batters put up a strong show in the first Test at Bulawayo, piling on 586 on the board after choosing to bat first. Sean Williams (154), Craig Ervine (104*), and Brian Bennett (110) were all among the runs, showing how rock-solid the home side’s middle order is.

Opener Ben Curran also showed some form, scoring 68 and 41 in the two innings, while Takudzwanashe Kaitano looks like a good prospect at the number three position.

Afghanistan Preview

The Afghans will be delighted with their stunning performance with the bat during the first Test, where they amassed a humongous total of 699 after conceding 586 runs with the ball. Rahmat Shah (234) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (246) were the stars of that incredible batting performance, which also included a hundred by Afsar Zazai.

Shah and Shahidi are Afghanistan’s most important batters and are expected to make big scores in the second Test as well.

All-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai didn’t have the best games in the previous Test but we are backing him to make an impact in the next match.

Weather Conditions

Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, offers a historically batter-friendly track.  Expect another placid pitch with minimal assistance for bowlers, likely leading to another marathon batting fest unless weather intervenes. Spinners will find some grip and turn as the match progresses, but it is unlikely to cause many problems for the batters.

The weather in Bulawayo will be cloudy for most of the match with occasional bursts of thundershowers that might disrupt proceedings.

ZIM vs AFG Pitch Report

Both teams will aim to bat first and pile on the runs. Don’t be surprised if the first innings from either side racks up a total well over 500 runs in what could turn into another high-scoring affair.

Toss: To Bat

Given that the conditions are likely to be extremely batting-friendly on the first three days, both captains will look to bat first here.
