Sourav Ganguly has pointed out the things that Shubman Gill can improve with his batting ahead of his first assignment as India’s new Test captain. Gill took over from Rohit Sharma as the new captain after the veteran batter announced his retirement from the longest format of the game in May.
Ganguly started off by saying that Gill could work on his Test match batting as he is a top-order batter. The former India skipper said that conditions in England doesn’t warrant you to just hit through the line. Ganguly feels that Gill may have to come in to bat with his side in a spot of bother and then his application may need to be different.
“Wishing him all the best. I am sure he can work on his Test match batting. He is a top-order batsman,” Ganguly told Revsportz.
“These are not conditions where you just hit through the line. It’s going to seam, swing, the new ball will be different. There can be a time when India is 10 for 2, and he has to come and play the new ball, so the application will be different,”
Ganguly feels that Gill needs to get his defence right and learn how to leave deliveries outside the off stump if he wants to find success in England.
“Shubman needs to score a bit more runs in these conditions when it’s seaming and swinging. It is going to be a bit difficult upfront with the new ball. Batting at 100 for 2 and 20 for 4 are two different things, so he has to get the defence right, learn how to leave deliveries outside the off stump,” he added.
This will be the first tour for India after the retirements of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin. Ganguly said that it is amazing to see things change quickly over a short period of time.
“There is no Kohli, no Rohit Sharma, no Ajinkya Rahane… it’s absolutely amazing – how things change over a period is unbelievable,” said Ganguly.
