Uruguay’s veteran striker Edinson Cavani has announced his retirement from international football on May 30, Thursday. Cavani, who is currently playing for Boca Juniors, announced his decision on his officil Instagram profile with a lengthy statement.
Cavani thanked the team for the lessons he had learnt over the years and said he was blessed to have worn the shirt of the Uruguayan team. The veteran striker would then announce his decision and said he would follow the side and their performances on the field.
“My dear celestial:
“I just want to thank you for every lesson you made me experience in your process. I don’t want to extend. Today there are few words but deep feelings. Thanks to each of the people who were part of this path for so many years.”
“I was and will always be blessed to have worn this shirt to represent what I love most in El Murido, my country. They were undoubtedly many precious years, I would have a thousand things to say, tell and remember, but today I want to dedicate myself to this new stage of my career and give everything where I have to be.”
“Today I decide to take a step aside, but I will always follow them with a beating heart, like when it was my turn to go out on the field. With this beautiful t-shirt.”
“I send a big hug to all my people. Up the Celeste!” said Cavani.
Cavani’s stats for Uruguay
Cavani made his debut for the Uruguayan national team on February 6, 2008, in a friendly match against Colombia. Since then, he has been a pivotal figure for his country. Cavani currently ranks as the second-highest goal scorer in Uruguay’s history, with 58 goals, and holds the distinction of being the third most-capped player, having made 136 appearances.
Throughout his international career, Cavani has been a consistent performer in major tournaments, including the Copa America and FIFA World Cup. He played crucial roles in Uruguay’s impressive runs, notably their fourth-place finishes in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. A standout moment came during the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, where Cavani played a vital role in Uruguay’s championship victory. He finished as the joint-top scorer of the tournament, underscoring his ability to find the net on the grandest stages of international football.
