The T20 Blast returns with a brand-new season and promises plenty of action-packed cricket. The South Group begins with Middlesex taking on Sussex at the iconic Lord’s on opening day. Middlesex had a terrible campaign last year and will be desperate to turn things around. Sussex, on the other hand, had a strong showing in the previous edition, making it to the semifinals, and will be aiming to go one step further this time.

Middlesex Preview

Middlesex had a miserable run last season, finishing second-last in the South Group with just three wins out of 14. They’ve got ground to cover and questions to answer as the new season begins.

Middlesex have lost Martin Andersson, who topped their run charts last season, to Derbyshire. But they’ve landed a major name in Kane Williamsonβ€”one of the most respected batters of this generation. Williamson’s T20 numbers are impressive: 6675 runs in 250 innings at an average of 32 and a strike rate of 122.45, adding serious weight to their middle-order.

He’ll line up alongside Leus du Plooy, Max Holden, and Jack Davies. Davies finished as Middlesex’s second-highest scorer in the previous Blast, piling up 214 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 128. Holden wasn’t far behind, scoring 188 in 10 games while going at 161.

Stevie Eskinazi is expected to captain the side again, and there’s a lot riding on his performances at the top. Ryan Higgins could also play a big roleβ€”he chipped in with 166 runs from 12 matches last season and picked up 9 wickets.

Sussex Preview

Sussex put together an impressive campaign last year, taking second place in the South Group with nine wins from 14. They edged past Lancashire in the quarter-final but fell short in the semi-final against Gloucestershire, who went on to lift the trophy.

This year, the squad looks nearly unchanged, so another solid campaign looks likely.

Daniel Hughes will once again be the main man with the bat. He led the batting charts last year in the T20 Blast, with 596 runs in 16 innings, averaging close to 40 and striking at 168.

James Coles, Harrison Ward, and Tom Alsop were all consistent contributors too, each finishing the season with over 330 runs. Together, they round out a dependable top and middle-order.

With the ball, Sussex will look to Tymal Mills and James Coles for early wickets. Mills took 24 last season, while Coles picked up 20, making them the most productive bowlers in the squad.

Ollie Robinson and Brad Currie are the other two expected to keep things steady through the middle and late overs.

Weather Conditions

Lord’s offers a true surface with consistent bounce and carry. Pacers get movement early, but spinners can control the middle overs if they vary pace smartly. Boundaries are longer square, shorter straight, so angles matter. It’s not a batting paradise, but totals of 160–180 are competitive if bowlers hit the right lengths. Expect a fair contest.

The weather in London will be mostly cloudy with chances of a shower or two in the afternoon, which could affect the start of the game.

MID vs SUS Pitch Report

The average score batting first at Lord’s is 171. The highest total posted here in the T20 Blast is Essex’s 237-6 in the 2023 edition. Both teams will be eyeing a score of around 180 to feel confident about their chances.

Toss: To Bowl

Out of the 44 domestic T20 matches held at Lord’s, 25 have gone in favor of the team batting first. However, with cloud cover expected, both sides may choose to bowl first, hoping to grab a few early wickets while conditions still offer some help.
