The test cricket is returning to Bangladesh. The two matches against Ireland are scheduled to be played from November 11–15 in Sylhet and from November 19–23 in Dhaka. These fixtures are not part of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. The game will be played at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Academy Ground. The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 9:30 am.

Bangladesh enters the upcoming Test series after a difficult run, having lost three and drawn two of their last five Test series. The selectors have made one change to the squad, recalling Mahmudul Hasan Joy following his strong performances in the National Cricket League, where he scored 127 and 51 for Chattogram Division. Joy, who made history with Bangladesh’s first Test century in South Africa in 2022, returns after being dropped due to poor form earlier in 2024. Najmul Hossain Shanto, 27, will continue as Test captain through the 2025–2027 WTC cycle. Despite stepping down temporarily after the Sri Lanka series loss in June, he resumes leadership with a record of four wins, nine losses, and one draw in 14 Tests. His standout achievement remains leading Bangladesh to a 2–0 series win in Pakistan in 2024.

Ireland will be led by Andy Balbirnie as they prepare for their Test tour of Bangladesh, entering the series on the back of three consecutive Test victories since February 2024. The 15-member squad features five potential debutants β€” Cade Carmichael, Stephen Doheny, Jordan Neill, Liam McCarthy, and legspinner Gavin Hoey. This marks only Ireland’s second-ever multi-match Test series.

Bangladesh Preview

Shadman Islam will open the innings with Mahmudul Hasan Joy. Islam averages 41 in four tests played this year, with a century and a half century. Joy is returning to the test squad after his strong performances in the National Cricket League, where he scored 127 and 51 for Chattogram Division. His average in Bangladesh is 22.71, which is a bit of a concern. Mominul Haque will come in at number three. Haque has experience of 73 tests in which he has scored 4627 runs with 13 centuries and 22 half-centuries. 11 of his 13 centuries have come in Bangladesh.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto will come in the middle with Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das. Shanto, who left the captaincy, has been asked once again to head the unit. He has 650 runs in the last 8 Tests at an average of 46.43. He will be the batter to watch out for. Rahim will play the two tests to take his tally to 100 Tests. He has 6328 runs with 12 centuries and 27 half-centuries. He was the player of the match in the only test Bangladesh has played against Ireland. Litton Das has a poor record at Sylhet. He has scored 57 runs in 4 innings here.

Taijul Islam will lead the bowling attack with Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Ebadot Hossain, and Nahid Rana. Islam has 42 wickets in the last 9 tests. He will be the bowler to watch out for. Miraz has picked up 31 wickets in the same number of tests. The all-rounder has 2110 runs with the bat and 205 wickets in 54 tests played so far. Hossain had picked 5 wickets in the only test against Ireland.

Ireland Preview

With five debutants picked up in the squad, Ireland will have a tough task to keep their three-test winning streak alive. Stephen Doheny will open the innings with skipper Andy Balbirnie. Balbirnie has 475 runs in 10 tests at an average of 25. Doheny will play his first Test. Curtis Campher will come in at number three. He has 342 runs in 7 tests with a century. He had scored 35 runs against Bangladesh in the only test played against them.

Harry Tector will come in the middle with Paul Stirling, Lorcan Tucker, and Andy McBrine. Tector had scored two half-centuries in two innings of the only test against Bangladesh. In 7 tests, he has 391 runs. Stirling has 382 runs in 7 tests with an average of 23.87. Lorcan Tucker will be the batter to watch out for. Tucker has 571 runs in 7 tests. He had scored a century against Bangladesh earlier. McBrine has 503 runs in the last 7 tests.

McBrine will also lead the bowling attack with Matthew Humphreys, Barry McCarthy, and Craig Young. McBrine has picked up 25 wickets in the last 9 tests. He will be the bowler to watch out for. He had picked up 6 wickets against Bangladesh earlier. McCarthy has 14 wickets in the last three tests.

Key Players: Lorcan Tucker, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy.

Weather Conditions

The weather in Sylhet is expected to be sunny on match day, with temperatures ranging from 19 Β°C to 29 Β°C. Winds will blow from the southeast at 12-27 km/h. It is a balanced pitch. The track at Sylhet provides an even battle between bat and ball. Early in the innings, the true bounce and fast outfield reward fluent stroke-making, allowing batters to score freely. As the game wears on, however, spinners come into play, making the latter stages more challenging for run-scoring.
