Jofra Archer could return for second Test against India: England national selector Wright

England’s star pacer Jofra Archer could return for the team’s second Test against India next month. File | Photo Credit: Reuters England’s national selector Luke Wright on Thursday (June 5, 2025) said star pacer Jofra Archer could return for the team’s second Test against India next month, four years after his last appearance in the traditional format. The second Test of the five-match series is scheduled to be held from July 2-6 at Edgbaston. Archer, 30, has not played first-class cricket since 2021 due to a series of injuries, and was not considered for selection for the first Test at Headingley as he works his way back from a broken thumb suffered at the recently-concluded Indian Premier League. “Joff’s trucking on really well, actually. The plans for him, he’s playing a few second-team games,” Wright said. “The plan is for him to play a few second team games, loading up in the second team for Sussex. And then the idea for him is to play for Sussex against Durham during the first Test. “So, he’ll play for Sussex if all things go well, and then if all things go well fingers crossed he should be available for the second Test,” Wright, a former teammate of Archer at Sussex, added. “Like anything with all these bowlers, he’s got to keep ticking things off everyday with no setbacks but if all goes well and he gets through that Durham game then he’s available potentially for selection for that second Test.” The thumb injury also saw him miss England’s ODI series against the West Indies between May 29 and June 3. India will play the first Test at Headingley (from June 20), the second at Edgbaston (from July 2), the third at Lord’s (from July 10), the fourth at Old Trafford (from July 23), and the final at The Oval (from July 31). England’s fast-bowling department looks thin on firepower and experience in the absence of Archer and speed merchant Mark Wood. Wood has been missing cricketing action due to a knee injury he suffered in March, which had ruled him out for four months. However, according to Wright, Wood could be in contention for the latter half of the India series. “I think Woody’s now started bowling just lightly, to be honest. He’s just off a few paces, but that’s been a great sign,” Wright said. “So, he’s on the road to recovery. I think he’s more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth Test. But again, each day it’s ticking off each box and making sure he’s okay,” said the former England batter. Published – June 05, 2025 07:34 pm IST

Shubman Gill’s ‘Sehwag-like game’ a chink in the armour as Ponting warns of fresh ‘challenge’: He needs to bat at…

Despite comparing India’s new Test captain Shubman Gill, to the legendary Virender Sehwag, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting outlined that a similar approach is likely to meet a fresh challenge in the upcoming tour of England, and hence has work to do on his Test match batting. The Aussie great also called for a change in his batting position, considering the added responsibility of captaincy. Shubman Gill will be leading India in the England Test series(AFP) Speaking to PTI, Ponting addressed Gill’s much-criticised defensive technique, which has cost the youngster multiple times in his short career thus far. And although he sees no technical flaw in his approach, he reckoned Gill has to work on the mental side of Test match batting. “It’s a bit both. There are some of the great Test players that haven’t had great defensive games, and (Virender) Sehwag is probably a great example of that. But if you’re in control of your stroke-play, you don’t have to worry too much about your defence. I mean, obviously it’s (defence) a big part of Test match cricket, but I think it’s more his mental application,” he explained. “(But) I think sometimes you might just get a little bit either ahead of himself or a little bit lazy in the middle of a test match innings. You can’t afford to do that. You’ve got to be 100 per cent committed to every ball that you face through six or seven hours of every day…I think that’s the challenge for Shubman.” Gill to replace Virat Kohli at No. 4? The biggest question since Kohli’s departure from Test cricket last month was who would replace the former India captain at No. 4 in the line-up. Ponting backed Gill for the role, at least for the initial phase of his leadership tenure, which will begin on June 20 in Leeds with the five-match Test series against the Ben Stokes-led side. “…the reason I did that was if they go with (Yashasvi) Jaiswal, and if Sai Sudarshan is the other opener, they need someone a bit more experienced at number three. So that could be either, KL at three, or that could be a Karun Nair at three and Shubman at four. “…once you grow into it, then you can move yourself back up to that number three spot,” said one of the finest batters of his generation.

Yuzvendra Chahal played entire IPL 2025 with ‘fractured ribs’; rumoured girlfriend Mahvash makes endearing gesture

Jun 05, 2025 07:04 PM IST Yuzvendra Chahal picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches during the season and was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker despite missing three matches. Punjab Kings bowler Yuzvendra Chahal played the entire IPL 2025 season with three injuries, which included fractured ribs as revealed by his rumoured girlfriend Mahvash, in her lengthy Instagram post on Thursday. Chahal picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches during the season and was the team’s second-highest wicket-taker despite missing three matches. RJ Mahvash shared a lenghty post on Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal did miss a few games towards the final phase of the tournament, having injured his wrist, and only returned to action in the Qualifier 2 game against the Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad. However, Mahvash revealed that the India star played the entire season with three fractures – one in his ribs and other on his bowling finger. Taking to Instagram, the Radio Jockey, who was spotted in the PBKS corner in nearly all the games this season showing support towards Chahal, penned an endearing post, praising his “warrior spirit.” “They fought, stayed and played till the last match! And special post to @yuzi_chahal23 because what people don’t know is that his ribs got fractured in the second match only and his bowling finger got fractured later, this guy played the entire season with 3 fractures! It was nothing but an honour to be a supporter of this team this year! Well played boys. All the people in these pictures have my heart See you next year! Also, many congratulations to RCB and fans for winning the title. Everyone played and worked hard! Cricket , and IPL ..my God again! Truly a festival for us Indians,” she wrote in an elaborate post on Instagram. Chahal remains the only bowler in the history of the IPL to pick 200, with second-placed Bhuvneshwar Kumar having 198 wickets to his name. The spinner now has 221 wickets in his career in 174 appearances at an economy rate of 7.96. The experienced bowler played a key role alongside Arshdeep Singh and Kyle Jamieson, who both picked three wickets each, to restrict the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 190 for nine in 20 overs after Virat Kohli’s 35-ball 43. However, Punjab stumbled in the run chase on the tricky Ahmedabad track in the IPL 2025 final on Tuesday. Shahshank Singh did show some effort, blasting 22 runs in the final over after Krunal Pandya’s match-winning middle-over spell, but it wasn’t enough as they fell six runs short. Gill has work to do on Test match batting and it won’t be easy as captain: Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting. File | Photo Credit: Reuters Shubman Gill has work to do on his Test match batting and considering the added responsibility of captaincy on the upcoming tour of England, he should move himself down to number four in the order, reckons Australian great Ricky Ponting. There is plenty of speculation over India’s new number four following the retirement of Virat Kohli and Ponting has backed Gill to take up that position at least in the initial stages of his leadership tenure beginning with the five-Test rubber from June 20. “His white ball form has been incredibly good. He’s got a little bit of work to do, on his Test match batting. And that’s never easy when you’re a new captain, to have to worry about your batting to the degree that he’s going to have to, it won’t be easy for him,” Ponting told PTI on the sidelines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he coached Punjab Kings to the final. The newly appointed Test captain started his career as an opener before moving down to number three last year. Ponting said India have made the right investment in Gill the captain. The two-time ODI World Cup winning skipper sees Gill serving India for a long time. “I actually named him as captain for the Sydney Test match last summer when Rohit didn’t play that game and there was a bit of an injury cloud over Bumrah, or as that game went on, Bumrah actually broke down in that game.” “And look, I don’t know Shubman that well. I’ve spoken to him six, eight, 10 times, maybe the last couple of years around different things and around batting and around leadership. He’s done a great job with GT [Gujarat Titans] , no doubt about that,” he said. “But he just seemed the sort of guy that the extra responsibility wouldn’t faze too much. It seems like he’s got a really level head on his shoulders. He’s someone that’s going to be around in Indian cricket for another 10 years.” Gill needs to work on defence, mindset In his 32-Test career, Gill has been found guilty of playing with hard hands on multiple occasions. His defensive technique too has been questioned. Ponting feels Gill also has work to do on the mental side of Test match batting. “…it’s a bit both, there’s some of the great Test players that haven’t had great defensive games, (Virender) Sehwag is probably a great example of that.“ “But if you’re in control of your stroke-play, you don’t have to worry too much about your defence. I mean, obviously it’s (defence) a big part of Test match cricket, but I think it’s more his mental application,” he explained. Ponting said he sees no technical fault in Gill’s defence. “[But] I think sometimes you might just get a little bit either ahead of himself or a little bit lazy in the middle of a test match innings. You can’t afford to do that. You’ve got to be 100 per cent committed to every ball that you face through six or seven hours of every day… “I think that’s the challenge for Shubman…,” said Ponting. Why number four for Gill Ponting has picked Gill at number four for the first at Leeds for a set of reasons. “…the reason I did that was if they go with [Yashasvi] Jaiswal, and if Sai Sudarshan is the other opener, they need someone a bit more experienced at number three. So that could be either, KL at three, or that could be a Karun Nair at three and Shubman at four. “…once you grow into it, then you can move yourself back up to that number three spot,” said one of the finest batters of his generation. Right time for Sudharsan to make Test debut The reason Ponting won’t have Rahul open with Jaiswal is because he wants Sudharsan to get his opportunity at the top of the order. The southpaw has been rated highly and has been in sensational touch of late. “I think the time’s right for Sudarshan to come into the side, to be honest. There’s a bit of a regeneration that’s going to happen around this Indian team now, obviously with Rohit and Virat not there. “Every team goes through that…seems to me like Sudarshan’s ready. Lots of first class runs, his IPL form this year has been probably better than anybody else,” he pointed out about the Orange Cap winner of the just-concluded season. “Technically, seems fine. And, you know, KL down in the middle order somewhere probably just gives that bit more stability.” Published – June 05, 2025 05:40 pm IST

Franchise cricket brings different sort of professionalism into sport: Smriti Mandhana

Franchise cricket brings different sort of professionalism into sport: Smriti Mandhana

Indian star batter Smriti Mandhana praised the growing women’s T20 leagues trends in Maharashtra, which further helps the prospects of identifying key talent for the national side. “For state associations, and for Maharashtra as well, to have this sort of platform–where I touched upon the fact that there’ll be a lot of eyes from WPL scouts–and also, of course, these sorts of performances can serve as a benchmark for people to get into the state side as well. So, I mean, to have that is great. And more importantly, I always believe that franchise cricket brings a different sort of professionalism into the sport, and for the girls–the state-level girls–to experience that, I’m sure they’ll be well-prepped when they go to the next level,” Smriti Mandhana said in a media interaction. Captain Smriti Mandhana does the ‘Go Jets’ pose with Ratnagiri Jets co-owners Rajan Navani and Rakesh Navani ahead of the inaugural edition of the Maharashtra Premier League on Wednesday So, yeah, I mean, the owners come with a different set of expectations, and playing with that sort of expectation always helps groom players and develop maturity in them. So, I’m sure a lot of Maharashtra girls are going to benefit from it,” she added. Smriti Mandhana shared her views on her association with the Ratnagiri Jets and Jets Club, and the importance of a woman’s perspective in having such structured programs for their benefit and future prospects. “Yeah, I mean, to get that at the age of 14-15 is great. Of course, we got it a little later, so we had to start developing it by looking at international standards. But the best thing about India at this moment, with women’s cricket, is the investment that’s coming in, and the investment they get to groom a player. I mean, very late in our careers, we realised the importance of fitness and all of those things. But I’m sure the club and the initiative are only going to promote or help them understand more about what is actually needed for the next level, and I’m sure they’ll be well-prepped. So, like, clubs and all of these people coming into cricket–I mean, men’s cricket already had that–and for them to now come into women’s cricket is just amazing,” she said. “I’m sure a lot of girls are going to benefit from it. In terms of the number of girls getting impacted, it’s going to be a lot more, and I’m sure within 3-4 years we’ll see the changes and differences, even in the Indian side and their performances,” she added. Mandhana, Speaks as a Captain of Ratnagiri Jets said, on corporate leagues are promoting women’s cricket, “I feel, for women’s cricket to have this sort of stage is amazing, and the very fact that state associations and also the WPL–the way they have supported it–shows that, of course, women’s cricket can generate revenues, which is an amazing thing for women’s cricket. And people are ready to invest money into it. I mean, the more professional the sport gets, it’s only going to get better, especially for grassroots-level cricketers. For them, I think this is just amazing. So, from my point of view, of course, promotion is one thing, but I think we are well beyond that in women’s cricket. I see it as people being ready to invest, and that shows that women’s cricket is growing and people want to watch it.” Mandhana, on winning the title in the inaugural season of WMPL and handling pressure, “I mean, the first time I spoke to them and they–of course, after the introduction–said they’d won the first two editions, and I was like, “Oh, okay.” But no, not pressure. I mean, you know, someone who’s already won it–and as Devika ma’am said, they’ve been part of the MPL–so they know what is needed for franchise cricket, especially in state cricket. You know, to have that awareness is amazing, and that’s only going to help. I wouldn’t take it as pressure. I mean, there is pressure every time you step on the field, so you don’t need to take any added pressure. Whenever you wear a jersey and represent a team, you want to do the best for them–so that pressure is always there. But we’ll take that as motivation rather than pressure.” Mandhana, message for the team and opinion on leading the side, ” Firstly, I’ll, of course, have a nice conversation with them, and the only message which I believe in is: you play cricket to have fun, enjoy, and actually have a really positive environment. Because, like, you win trophies, you don’t win trophies–but what you remember is the journey of that one month or those 20 days when we are going to be part of one squad. And that’s the only thing. I mean, let’s just have a lot of fun together. There’s nothing like–I don’t really believe in something like senior or junior. It’s just more experience and less experience.” “I mean, when you start playing cricket at a place like I started–of course, I still play whenever I get an opportunity–but you started at Maharashtra, so firstly, to know that Maharashtra is starting a women’s league, I was very happy and excited. And of course, whenever the opportunity comes to represent a team, as I said, I mean it’s always a new role, an exciting role, so of course, I was really excited and happy. And more importantly, I was very excited for the girls of Maharashtra–I mean, for them to get this platform and to express themselves. So yeah, really looking forward to that,” she added.
