There was certainly an increase in expectation from India all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, when his auction value soared to INR 23.75 crore on the opening day of the mega event in Riyadh last November, an increment of 1087.5 per cent from his base price of INR 2 crore. It further peaked with Kolkata Knight Riders announcing him the vice-captain. Alas, it met the same brutal fate. Succumbed under the pressure, he managed just 142 runs in 11 innings, resulting in a disastrous season. However, Andy Flower, under whom the Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted their maiden IPL title this year, claimed Iyer would have performed better had he been in RCB. RCB won the IPL title beating Punjab Kings in the final(PTI) The last bid price for Iyer, before KKR roped him in, was INR 23.50 crore, which came from RCB. It was among the biggest the franchise ever bid for a player at an auction, thus showing their desperation to acquire the India batter. Although the capital was later used to acquire two match winners who played an instrumental role in their title triumph, Flower, speaking to the media, recalled RCB’s plans for Iyer as he subtly blamed Kolkata for mishandling him. “We really rated Venky; that’s why we went hard for him. We valued having a strong Indian core for our team. If he came and played for us, he would have had a really great season,” he said. How missing out Venkatesh Iyer was a blessing in disguise for RCB? Bengaluru had used the exactly same amount to rope in Josh Hazlewood for INR 12.50 crore and Phil Salt for INR 11.50 crore, before strengthen their unit with two other first XI certainties – Jitesh Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. And all four of them helped RCB claim their maiden IPL title in 18 years. Speaking to the broadcasters, veteran India batter Abhinav Mukund believed it was a lucky escape for the RCB. “In hindsight, they must be thinking, thank God we didn’t go all the way from Venkatesh Iyer. Because their last losing bid was Venkatesh Iyer. And the next three buys were Josh Hazlewood, Jitesh Sharma and I think Phil Salt. Those were the next three buys. And they saved so much in the bank for day two when Bhuvneshwar Kumar came in. So, it was a very clear plan that they wanted to buy all of these players,” he said. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on Thursday, expressed solidarity following the tragic stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during the team’s IPL victory celebrations, offering financial aid to the families of the 11 deceased. Alongside the financial aid, they have created an ‘RCB Cares’ fund to support the 33 others injured in the stampede. “The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family. As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of INR 10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased. In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being created to support fans injured in this tragic incident,” the official statement read.  “Our fans will always remain at the heart of everything that we do. We remain united in grief.” The incident was triggered by a heavy rush of people to join a hastily-arranged celebration for the franchise. The police and local administration were left overwhelmed by the lakhs who took to the streets to join the festivities at a stadium which can accommodate only 35,000 people. At the order of the Karnataka’s chief minister Siddaramaiah, inquiry into the incident has already begun with Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha heading the magisterial probe. Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Police Commissioner B Dayananda will be asked to join the inquiry. “Today I visited the KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association) stadium. I have seen all the events here. I will issue notice to some people for inquiry. I will conduct an inquiry and finish within 15 days. The 36-year-old Woakes recently returned from a long-term ankle injury. He has 181 wickets and 1,970 runs from 57 Tests so far, and had played a major role in a big England win over India at the Lord’s during the 2018 series. He scored an unbeaten 137 and took four wickets in the match to help England win by an innings and 159 runs. Woakes, along with fast bowler Josh Tongue, have been asked by the ECB to get some miles under their legs before the first Test against India starting June 20. File | Photo Credit: AP Former Sri Lankan off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been indicted by the Hambantota High Court for attempting to lure a fellow player for match-fixing during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL) . The Attorney General’s Department said this becomes the first such indictment of a national level cricketer for match-fixing under the country’s recently-introduced anti-corruption law. He was arrested and released on bail in 2023. The 40-year-old played one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka between 2012 and 2016 for a combined haul of 78 wickets. He was a member of Sri Lanka’s 2014 T20 World Cup-winning squad. According to local media reports, he made the corrupt approach to another national player Tharindu Ratnayake, who was playing for Colombo Kings at that time. “Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing,” a report in the Sri Lankan ‘Daily Mirror‘ stated.
