West Indian Nicholas Pooran retires from international cricket at 29

Nicholas Pooran, West Indies’ Twenty20 record-holder for runs and appearances, retired from international cricket on Monday (June 10, 2025). Pooran, 29, made the announcement on Instagram. “Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me,” he wrote. “To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.” Pooran was suspended briefly in late 2019 after admitting to ball-tampering against Afghanistan, and overcame that to be named West Indies T20 vice-captain about 18 months later for a tour by Australia. But he became captain when Kieron Pollard couldn’t play, and led the team to a 4-1 series win. In 2022, he was named the permanent white-ball captain and took the team to that year’s T20 World Cup in Australia, but in fallout from a first-round elimination he resigned. Are Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz cut from the same cloth? | Tennis News

Carlos Alcaraz and Rafa Nadal (Photo by Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images for Laureus) Unlike his idol, Alcaraz at 22 has won Majors on grass, hard and clay. Nadal’s first 4 Slam wins came in Paris There was talk from Day 1, but Sunday night was the perfect catalyst for the tennis world to go into a tizzy. At 22, Rafael Nadal had won five Grand Slam titles and when Carlos Alcaraz did the same by outlasting Jannik Sinner at Rafa’s ‘home’ Roland Garros, the comparison calls became louder.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!“It is a stat that I am going to keep for me forever, winning the fifth Grand Slam at the same time as Rafa – my idol, my inspiration. It’s a huge honour,” Alcaraz said after the five-and-a-half-hour epic. Both are Spaniards, both share a never-say-die attitude, both are die-hard Real Madrid fans. The surface similarities between the two are many. So much so that the Rafa loyalist over a decade and a half feels Alcaraz is a natural heir to his throne of the heart. Poll Which player’s style do you prefer? But is it that simple? Are Nadal and Alcaraz cut out of the same cloth? The answer is probably ‘no’.Nadal came at a time when the world was in awe of the jaw-dropping beauty of Roger Federer. The victories were becoming routine when this Spanish matador rocked the citadel of tennis with incredible ability to endure. Federer, who had grown up on Swiss clay and believed till 2005 that it was a matter of time before he won the French, suddenly didn’t know how to get past his young nemesis on the red clay of Paris. It was a riddle that Federer never solved — he beat Rafa on other surfaces, but never at Roland Garros.Who’s that IPL player?Nadal won 14 French Open titles — a record that is unlikely to be broken — and it had a lot to do with the different facets of his game that he went on adding to his basic repertoire of being an unbelievable retriever. But to start off, the myth of Rafa began as a counterpoint to the elegance of Federer. That’s a fundamental difference between Alcaraz and Nadal. The Murica boy appeared on the big stage almost as a saviour in early 2022 when Federer was all but gone, Nadal was in a decline and Novak Djokovic was the untouchable master. Tennis was getting slightly unidimensional, and it needed the gold dust of artistry to keep it enticing for the consumer pampered by the Swiss-Spanish royalty for close to two decades.“The basic difference between Nadal and Alcaraz is that the latter is as good on any surface as he is on clay. His first Slam came on the hard courts of the US Open. He conquered grass when nobody expected him to do so, and now he is a two-time French Open champion. On the other hand, Rafa’s first four Grand Slam titles were all at Roland Garros, till the 2008 Wimbledon final happened,” Indian legend Ramesh Krishnan told TOI. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep. 6: Harish Thawani on cricket’s TV market and the watershed moments While Nadal became an extremely reliable volleyer and kept on adding new shots and facets to his game, the 22-Slam winner’s core strength was his ability to defend on slightly slower surfaces. Alcaraz, on the other hand, even as a teenager, was a combination of attack and defence – his ability to play outrageous winners has been the cornerstone of some of his best moments so far. Be it his drop shot down 0-30 serving for the match against Novak Djokovic in 2023 Wimbledon final or his ability to pull winners out of his bag in the final set tiebreak on Sunday, Alcaraz was more Federer than Nadal for the tennis tragic. The biggest compliment for Alcaraz probably came from the other master Djokovic, who feels that he hasn’t “played a player like him” after the 2023 Wimbledon final loss. “Roger and Rafa had their own strengths and weaknesses, but Carlos is an amazing player. I would say his game has the best of all three of us.”That probably sums up Alcaraz’s game. And when John McEnroe said on Sunday that “these guys (Alcaraz and Sinner) would beat Roger and Rafa in their prime”, you’re left with the dilemma: “Who would you pay to watch? Nadal or Alcaraz?Krishnan smiled at the query. “I will probably pay to watch both.”

KL Rahul A+, Yashasvi Jaiswal D: Report card of Indian stars in India A vs England Lions

KL Rahul A+, Yashasvi Jaiswal D: Report card of Indian stars in India A vs England Lions

The India A vs. England Lions series ended with another draw in Canterbury on Monday, June 9. The visitors put on a good showing with the bat and took a lead in the first innings, as KL Rahul and others led the way. The result was always going to be a stalemate as both teams were given a flat deck, and a result was improbable from four days. For the visitors, it was all about giving some much-needed game time for some of the stars, who will be part of the India squad for the Test series against England, starting from June 20. KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur will be part of the squad that will play the first Test in Headingley later this month and they got some good time in the middle across both matches against England Lions. While some of them grabbed the spotlight with their consistent performances, the others failed to impress and make a mark. Before we analyse the performances, a special mention to some of the stars from the series, who aren’t part of the main squad. They have shown that they should be in consideration for a Test call-up in the near future and are knocking on the door of the Indian selectors. Honourable mentions Anshul Kamboj (A): The youngster from Haryana has been turning heads on the domestic circuit and carried the form into the IPL, where he was impressive with CSK. During the two-match series against the Lions, Kamboj showed control with the ball and had an economy of 3.04 on tracks that were best suited for batting. To top it all, he got a fifty in the second innings of the second unofficial Test. Definitely one to watch out for in the future. Khaleel Ahmed (B+): Khaleel Ahmed played just one match and picked up four wickets. India have been looking for a left-arm pacer in the setup for quite some time and Khaleel has been impressive in the past few years. Sarfaraz Khan (B+): Many felt that Sarfaraz was unfortunate to have missed out on the main squad, despite working hard. He played a brilliant knock in the first Test and will remain in the eyes of the selectors. Report card for Indian stars KL Rahul (A+): Rahul put in a special request to be part of the India A squad for the second match against the Lions and made a statement. The Karnataka batter scored a hundred and fifty in the two innings he batted and ended up with 167 runs. Definitely good signs for India heading into the 5-match series. Yashasvi Jaiswal (D): While Rahul excelled, the same coudln’t be said about Yashasvi Jaiswal. In the four innings he batted, the Mumbai batter scored just 110 runs, which included a fifty as well. He will need to bounce back quickly after this one. Karun Nair (A+): The remontada for Karun Nair continued in the two matches against the Lions, as he emerged as the highest run-getter with 259 runs across the two matches. He also picked up one wicket in the first Test to cap off a fine series. Dhruv Jurel (A+): Dhruv Jurel was the most consistent batter during the series with 227 runs and three fifties to his name. If India needs a pure batter during the England series, Jurel would be the man for the job. Abhimanyu Easwaran (B): Abhimanyu Easwaran had a good series with 167 runs to his name from 4 innings and had two fifties to his name. He has been waiting for a long time to be a part of the Indian team and hopefully, he will get it this time. Nitish Kumar Reddy (C): After a breakout series in Australia, Nitish Kumar Reddy didn’t have a great outing in England. The all-rounder scored 135 runs in 4 innings and picked up just two wickets. Shardul Thakur (D): Shardul is aiming to make a return to the Indian team after a hiatus but his audition during the series against the Lions didn’t go according to plan. The all-rounder scored just 80 runs from 3 innings and got three wickets across both matches. Published On: Jun 10, 2025

Bengaluru matches moved out of KSCA: BCCI | Cricket News

BENGALURU: Amid rising concerns over Karnataka State Cricket Association’s (KSCA) administrative stability in the aftermath of Wednesday’s stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, hosting of cricket in the city has taken a huge hit. The first casualty is the three-match one-day series between India ‘A’ and South Africa ‘A’ scheduled to be held here from Nov 13 to 19.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW!Without specifying any reason, Indian cricket board (BCCI) issued a press release, stating Bengaluru matches have been shifted to Rajkot. The KSCA president did not dwell on the reasons but maintained that the stampede and change of venues were not related. Sources said the decision was taken on Thursday and communicated to KSCA. Poll Do you believe the stampede at M Chinnaswamy Stadium will impact future cricket events in Bengaluru? Before the limited-overs series, the two teams will play two multi-day red-ball matches and those will be held as per schedule at BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) — a dedicated centre near the airport on the outskirts of the city. This could probably be the beginning of problems for KSCA as a host association. According to sources, BCCI and the International Cricket Council (ICC) are now weighing the feasibility of ICC Women’s WC matches that are to be held in Bengaluru between Sept and Nov. Chinnaswamy Stadium is one of the five venues in India set to host the premier tournament with the Bengaluru facility earmarked for the opening contest involving India (on Sept 30), one semifinal (Oct 30) and the final (Nov 2) if Pakistan does not qualify, in which case it will be moved to Colombo. MLC: Venky Harinarayan on growing cricket in the USA, AI-driven teams and the Olympic boost Speaking to TOI, former India captain Shantha Rangaswamy said, “I’m yet to come to terms with the tragedy at the stadium, which has brought joy and happiness to fans for 50 years. If the women’s World Cup matches are shifted out of Bengaluru, it will be a huge blow to cricket in the state. As for women’s cricket, we haven’t seen much growth in the past two-and-a-half years, and it will set us back further.”According to sources, it is unlikely KSCA will host a major cricket match for some time. To begin with, the stadium needs to be renovated, with the fan frenzy on Wednesday resulting in significant damage to the structure, including compound walls, railings, the staircase, and sanitation.
