There will be plenty of excitement for the locals and fans of the longer form of cricket in Guyana as Test cricket returns to Providence for the first time since May 2011!
And there is plenty to be play for over the five days of this fixture with the Sir Vivian Richards Trophy to be claimed. The series is currently at 0-0 and will complete after this match. Also, both sides are in need of World Test Championship points, a league in which West Indies are currently propping up the table with South Africa only two places above them in seventh.
The First Test was an entertaining affair but the pitch remained solid and the batters were able to dominate the final exchanges. However, in this game, we can expect Keshav Maharaj to be extremely dangerous on a spin-friendly surface.
West Indies Preview
West Indies have had problems scoring consistent runs and that problem was still in evidence in the opening match of the series when they could only post 233 in response to South Africaβs 357. That said, and in spite of losing captain Kraigg Brathwaite for a three-ball duck in the second innings when looking to bat time and save the game, the unit showed admirable talent and reaching 201/5 from 56.2 overs to prevent a South African victory.
South Africa Preview
South Africa certainly had the better of the First Test in Port of Spain last week but in the end the pitch did not offer quite enough assistance for their bowlers to secure victory. We are not expecting any changes to the team for the tourists and captain Temba Bavuma will once again be demanding big first innings runs on this pitch in Providence.
Weather Conditions
According to the forecast, it will be a dry five days in Guyana with the temperature peaking at over 30 degrees throughout the Test! Humidity will be high from start to finish and only day two will see much cloud cover.

This will be the first Test Match in Providence for over 13 years so we do not have much recent data to go off regarding five-day cricket at this venue! However, we can expect spin to play a role throughout and the bounce is likely to become inconsistent from day four onwards.
