Lucknow Super Giants have beaten Mumbai Indians in each of their last three IPL clashes.

  • Digvesh Rathi has made a real impact for LSG this season. Expect another tight spell from him, with his economy likely staying under eight.
  • Boult and Bumrah remain Mumbaiโ€™s go-to bowlers at the death. Their accuracy in the last few overs has been the difference more than once.
  • The biggest chase ever pulled off at Wankhede in the IPL came in 2023, when Mumbai gunned down 215 against Rajasthan Royals with three balls to spare.

Match 45 of IPL 2025 sees Mumbai Indians (MI) go up against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Wankhede on Sunday afternoon. MI have finally broken into the top four after stringing together four wins in a row. The five-time champs are hitting their stride at just the right time. LSG, on the other hand, are still unpredictableโ€”theyโ€™ve slipped to sixth with five wins and four losses. The surface should be good for batting, and with the kind of power hitters both teams bring, we could be in for a high-scoring clash. Given their current form and home advantage, MI will have a slight upper hand.

Mumbai Indians Preview

After stumbling early in the season, Mumbai Indians have found their grooveโ€”four wins in a row have pushed them up to fourth on the table, with 10 points from nine games. Their most recent win came in Hyderabad, where they made light work of a modest 144-run chase against SRH, wrapping it up in 15.4 overs with seven wickets to spare.

Theyโ€™re starting to look like a complete unit. The top orderโ€” Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks, and Rohit Sharmaโ€”have had their ups and downs but are putting enough on the board to give the innings a decent platform. Rohitโ€™s back in rhythm too, with back-to-back 70s that helped seal the last two games. Given his IPL track record, thatโ€™s a big boost heading into the final stretch.

The middle order is where theyโ€™re doing real damage. Suryakumar Yadav has been on fireโ€”373 runs in nine games, averaging 62.16 with a strike rate of 166.51. Heโ€™s looked in full control recently, scoring 68* off 37 and 40* off just 19. Itโ€™s hard to see him slowing down as he returns to his home ground.

Tilak Varmaโ€™s timing and intent have been spot on as well. Heโ€™s another one who can shift momentum quickly.

Further down, Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir are both capable of turning a game in a handful of deliveries.

Pandyaโ€™s also pulling his weight with the ball, picking up 12 wickets and keeping things relatively tight with an economy of 9.08. Deepak Chaharโ€™s got eight wickets but hasnโ€™t been as tidy at the end of innings.

Trent Boult has kept things in check with the new ball and at the death. He was the standout against SRH, finishing with 4-26. Jasprit Bumrahโ€™s presence has added another layer of control. Between the two of them, theyโ€™ve managed to keep a lid on things. Mitchell Santner has done a tidy job through the middle overs and should get some turn on this pitch.

Lucknow Super Giants Preview

Itโ€™s been a bit of a stop-start campaign for Lucknow Super Giants this IPLโ€”five wins, four defeats, and a sixth-place spot with a poor NRR of -0.054. Theyโ€™ve pulled off some solid results but havenโ€™t managed to build momentum. To stay in the playoff race, theyโ€™ll need to string together a few wins quickly.

One thing going their way lately is Aiden Markramโ€™s uptick with the bat. The opener has looked more settled as the seasonโ€™s gone on, scoring 326 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 151โ€”third-best in the side.

Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran have been the mainstays in the batting department. Marsh has hit 344 in eight games at 160.74, including four half-centuries. Pooran has been even betterโ€”377 runs in nine outings, striking at an outrageous 204.89. He failed in the last two games, so we expect him to make a big impact in this match, particularly on a great batting wicket like Wankhede.

Outside of these three overseas stars, the batting hasnโ€™t clicked. Rishabh Pantโ€™s tough run continuesโ€”just 106 in eight inningsโ€”and the middle order lacks bite. David Millerโ€™s been off as well, struggling to find timing or rhythm.

That said, Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad have chipped in when needed. Badoniโ€™s composed 36 off 21 in the last game steadied the innings, while Samadโ€™s late knocks have added some valuable late runs.

Shardul Thakur leads their wicket tally with 12 from nine matches, but his economy of 11.20 has been expensive. Avesh Khan has stepped up late in games and taken eight wickets while going at 9.84.

Weather Conditions

At Wankhede, the strip usually offers plenty for the batters, though thereโ€™s often a brief window at the start where the quicks can extract some movement with the fresh ball. Once that passes, the track flattens out and scoring flows. With an afternoon start, expect the pitch to dry out and give spinners something to work with in the middle overs. The surface should remain solid throughout, meaning slower balls might not be the best option.

Conditions will be hot and muggy in Mumbai, but showers arenโ€™t on the radar.

MI vs LSG Pitch Report

At Wankhede, first-innings scores usually hover around 170. RCB smashed the highest ever here with 235-1 against MI back in 2015. In the last two games, teams batting first put up 176-6 and 162-5, but still lost without much of a fight. That tells you anything under 190 isnโ€™t likely to hold up. Both sides will probably have 200-plus in mind if they want to stay ahead.

Toss: To Bat

This will be an afternoon game, and in this hot and sultry weather, both teams are likely to bat first.
