‘When I met him…’: Shubman Gill recalls his first meeting with Virat Kohli – Watch

NEW DELHI: If Virat Kohli is called the ‘King’ then Shubman Gill is referred to as the ‘Prince’ of Indian cricket.Gill has been earmarked to succeed Kohli as the batting mainstay of Team India and he himself has gone on record to looking up to Kohli and getting inspiration from the former Indian captain. But Gill and Kohli would be on the opposite sides when Gujarat Titans take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday and ahead of the match, the host broadcaster shared a video where Gill talks about his first meeting with Kohli.Gill says, “When I spoke to him for the first time when I went to New Zealand, there he told me every time a new kid comes, people say he needs a couple of chances, he needs some innings to get through but I think if you are good and capable then you can start from your first innings, you can score a 100 in your first innings. And you come to know how one looks at life.”“So I came to know what kind of a person he is and I really liked it. So what he told me was that if you a new kid comes on the block, in the Indian team, all say that he should get some chances, he should get some innings, he will get set after that only. But he said that he saw that capability in me and you have to give it your 100% , rest we will see what happens,” Gill adds. With 4 wins and 5 defeats, Gujarat Titans are at the seventh spot in the points table while RCB are at the bottom.

'Everyone loves range hitting': KL Rahul after Lucknow Super Giants' loss to Rajasthan Royals

‘Everyone loves range hitting’: KL Rahul after Lucknow Super Giants’ loss to Rajasthan Royals

NEW DELHI: Captain Sanju Samson led the Rajasthan Royals with an unbeaten 33-ball 71, while Dhruv Jurel contributed 52 not out off 34 balls, as they secured a seven-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2024 match at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday.Put in to bat first, Lucknow Super Giants posted a respectable 196 for five against the Rajasthan Royals, thanks to skipper KL Rahul‘s 76 off 48 balls and Deepak Hooda’s 50 off 31 balls.Chasing 197, Sanju and Jurel formed an unbroken partnership of 121 runs for the fourth wicket to reach the target in 19 overs. After LSG lost the match, skipper KL Rahul rued the team’s poor start and said that his team fell short of 20 runs. “I think we left about 20 runs behind. We didn’t get an ideal start but with the partnership me and Hooda had was great. In these sorts of games, the set batter had to score close to a hundred after getting to 50-60. I think we were 150 after about 15 overs, should have capitalized on it a bit more. I think it is clear the team with more sixes ends up winning. We do try to hit our sixes but today we had to change our approach after those two early wickets. If Hooda pushed on and scored 20 more, and I got 20 more then we’d finish around 220. That would have been the difference, that’s the 20 runs we left behind,” KL said after the match. LSG, who are fourth in the points tally with 5 wins in 9 matches, will next face Mumbai Indians on Tuesday. “We’re seeing with every game how important it is to give the bowlers that extra cushion because they are under the pump. Everyone loves range hitting and hitting it all over the park, we are no different. It is part of the prep. Our big hitters are Stoin and Pooran who can hit those big shots. The other guys like us try to pick our areas and time the shots better,” he said.“(On Mishra and Bishnoi) There is a bit of chat before the game with the numbers and how opposition players match up. Mishra is an experienced player and today was a day we knew he could be useful with how slow he bowls and with the larger boundaries. Once the runs kept flowing, they put pressure on our bowlers. There were 2-3 overs when Krunal bowled really well and squeezed them but then they attacked the fast bowlers. I couldn’t get a good time to get Bishnoi, wanted to keep him for the backend when Rovman and Hetmyer came out to bat because we know he can bowl well to them,” the LSG captain said.

Archery World Cup: India bag three gold medals to sweep compound team events

Underlining their supremacy in non-Olympic compound archery, India grabbed a hat-trick of gold medals to make a clean sweep of team events at the ongoing World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai here on Saturday. India’s Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur dropped just four points to trounce Italy 236-225 in the women’s compound team event to open their account with a gold in the season-opening global showpiece. The men’s team of Abhishek Verma, Priyansh and Prathamesh Fuge went one step better as they missed just two points en route to defeating Netherlands’ Mike Schloesser, Sil Pater and Stef Willems 238-231. The mixed team completed the sweep when the second-seeded Jyothi and Abhishek warded off a late resurgence from their Estonian rivals — Lisell Jaatma and Robin Jaatma — to win 158-157 in a thrilling finish. This was a double gold medal for the reigning Asian Games champion Jyothi who is also in the hunt for an individual gold and will play her semifinal later in the day. Priyansh is also in the hunt for an individual medal in the compound segment. Medal rounds in the recurve section will be on Sunday and India are eyeing two gold from the Olympic discipline. The Indian men’s team will take on Olympic champions South Korea in the gold medal clash. Deepika Kumari is in fray for an individual medal and will play her semifinal against South Korean rival in the women’s recurve section. The women’s compound team, who qualified as top seed, dropped just four points from 24 arrows to down sixth seeded Italy in the first match of the day. In the first three ends of six arrows each, Jyothi, Aditi and Parneet missed the perfect 10 only twice to take a handsome 178-171 lead over Marcella Tonioli, Irene Franchini and Elisa Roner. In the fourth end, the Indians dropped two points but it did not matter much as they nailed the gold with an 11-point margin. The men’s team, who qualified as the fourth seed, put up a near flawless show to defeat their Dutch opponents. They began with a perfect round of 60 and dropped just two points in the next two ends, before sealing the win with another perfect 60 in the final set of six arrows. In the compound mixed team event, Jyothi and Abhishek took a three-point lead, starting off with a perfect round of 40. The three-point drop in the first end proved decisive for Estonian archers who went on to shoot three perfect rounds of 40 each but the Indians held their nerves to seal the issue. Leading 119-117, the Indian duo needed a minimum score of 39 points out of a maximum 40 in the final end. They did just that to wrap up the country’s third gold. Why Mitchell Starc is not in KKR's XI against PBKS? Shreyas Iyer reveals reason behind out-of-form pacer's exclusion | Cricket

Why Mitchell Starc is not in KKR’s XI against PBKS? Shreyas Iyer reveals reason behind out-of-form pacer’s exclusion | Cricket

Kolkata Knight Riders’ fast bowler Mitchell Starc was not a part of the side’s XI as it took on the Punjab Kings on Friday. Starc, the most expensive player in the league with a price tag of INR 24.75 crore, hasn’t had the desired performances in the season so far. In his first seven matches in the league, the left-arm pacer took six wickets but conceded at an alarming rate of 11.48. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Mitchell Starc bowls during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket match (AFP) In his previous match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Starc was smashed for three sixes by Karn Sharma in the final over as the side was almost on the verge of a thrilling comeback win in Kolkata. However, Starc eventually removed the batter to secure a one-run win for the Knight Riders. HT launches Crick-it, a one stop destination to catch Cricket, anytime, anywhere. Explore now! On Friday, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer confirmed that Starc wasn’t part of the XI, but the pacer’s poor form wasn’t the reason for his exclusion. Iyer revealed that Starc endured a cut on his finger, leading to his removal from the playing side. “Starcy got a cut on his finger in the last game, Dushmantha Chameera replaces him,” Iyer said during the toss. Starc made a return to the IPL for the first time since 2015 this year. This year’s IPL is key to many Indian and international stars due to the T20 World Cup, which succeeds almost immediately after the season. Starc, one of the regulars for Australia across all formats, would be aiming to make a quick return from injury and dish out impressive performances for the Knight Riders as the second half of the group stage continues. PBKS win toss Punjab Kings’ stand-in captain, Sam Curran, won the toss at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata and opted to bowl. Curran has been leading the side in the past few matches in the absence of opener Shikhar Dhawan, who is currently nursing an injury. PBKS had one change in their XI with Jonny Bairstow replacing fellow countryman Liam Livingstone.

Rs 1 Crore Bonanza For Ranji Stars, Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI Selectors To Play Big Part: Report

Rs 1 Crore Bonanza For Ranji Stars, Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI Selectors To Play Big Part: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering doubling the remuneration for domestic players. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the national selection committee, led by chairman Ajit Agarkar, has been tasked by the BCCI to help them implement this idea. The sole aim of the idea is to make sure that the non-IPL players do not feel deprived. Currently, the BCCI pays Rs 60,000 per day to a player who has played more than 40 Ranji games. Similarly, players get Rs 50,000 and Rs 40,000 a day respectively for playing 21-40 matches and 20 matches, respectively. Meanwhile, the reserve players earn Rs 30,000 and 20,000 a day in the respective categories. In total, a senior player can earn upto Rs 25 lakh if his side reaches the final with others in the side making between Rs 17 lakh and Rs 22 lakh. “It is understood that different plans are under consideration but there is unanimity among all concerned in the BCCI that the fees for the domestic cricketers has to be doubled at least,” the report claimed. The report also adds that BCCI is considering increasing the scale of payment between Rs 75 lakh and Rs 1 crore if a player features in 10 Ranji Trophy matches. The players will also earn more for playing in domestic white-ball tournaments such as Vijay Hazare and Mushtaq Ali. While there is no confirmation regarding this development, the report also reveals that the changes could be made as early as next season. The move will be aimed at encouraging the domestic players to take part in the Ranji Trophy, and also maximise the earning of the domestic stars who are not featuring in the IPL. Earlier this year, the BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced higher match fees for those playing Test matches. Praising the announcement, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar had suggested that fees for domestic cricketers be doubled or tripled. “If the Ranji Trophy fees can be doubled or tripled, certainly there’ll be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, and a lot less pullouts from the Ranji Trophy, because if the fees of playing a Ranji Trophy match are a good fee, there will be fewer people pulling out for various reasons,” the cricket legend had stated last month. Ramandeep Singh Dismisses Mitchell Starc Injury Concern, Says He's Available For Selection vs PBKS

Ramandeep Singh Dismisses Mitchell Starc Injury Concern, Says He’s Available For Selection vs PBKS

File photo of Mitchell Starc.© BCCI Mitchell Starc has no injury concern and is “available” for selection, Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Ramandeep Singh said even as the star pacer indulged in just light training sessions ahead of their IPL clash against Punjab Kings. The Australian cricketer, who attracted a record bid, did not have the kind of return to the league after eight years he would have hoped as he has leaked plenty of runs this season and has managed just six wickets. The left-arm quick also reportedly sustained a finger injury on his bowling hand during their match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Starc did not bowl at the nets in their two practice sessions ahead of their match against PBKS, while Sri Lankan pacer Dushmantha Chameera was seen slogging it out, fuelling speculation that the Aussie may be “rested”. But Ramandeep said Starc was available for selection. “Yes, he’s available. It’s got to do with his workload management,” Ramandeep said. “He is a legend. Cricket is a game of time. We can’t judge him from a few matches,” he said. With Starc going through a poor patch, the bowling unit has come under pressure but Ramandeep said, “There has been no discussion on bowling.” “We just discus about execution and plan and how to improve further. We don’t’ judge someone in one or two matches.” With five wins in seven matches, KKR occupy the second spot in the 10-team table and are well placed to finish in top-two. “We are going for one game at a time. We are just focused on Punjab match, not thinking about finishing top two at the moment,” Ramandeep said. He further credited team mentor Gautam Gambhir for their consistent show this season. “Everyone has a lot of clarity. It’s only because of him the team is performing so well. He is backing everyone,” he said. (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.) Topics mentioned in this article

Doesn’t want to see me on a 100m track,” Gayle said in the video.“Of course I’m a sprinter. And if you want to bring any other athlete along, you know, Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell, anybody. Somebody gonna come fourth. What am I doing? So I start smashing him. Hit him for one or two sixes and probably for a few fours. Then, eventually, I get an inside edge onto the stumps,” he said.Bolt’s ambitions extend beyond just his love for cricket. Leveraging his immense popularity, particularly in the USA, he aims to propel the T20 World Cup into the limelight on American soil. Pat Cummins’ favourite memory of Virat Kohli won’t make Indian fans happy | Cricket News

Virat Kohli and Pat Cummins will face off once again in IPL 2024 on Thursday when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) host Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, and while the camaraderie between two champion cricketers was evident during a joint training session, Cummins didn’t miss a chance to be a little cheeky when he was asked about his favourite memory of Kohli. IPL 2024: Results | Points Table In the ‘Captains Speak’ segment of a Star Sports show, Cummins, who also led Australia to the 2023 ODI World Cup triumph, was asked a few questions about Kohli as the two gear up for another match-up. “Someone who has played so much cricket, I admire him for how much he gets up for every game and gets into the contest, whether he is batting or in the field. He plays 100 days a year and he’s up for every single of those games,” Cummins said. Interestingly, Kohli was bowled by Cummins for 54 in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, which proved to be one of the game-changing moments of the title clash that Australia went on to win by six wickets. It was Australia’s record-extending sixth ODI World Cup triumph. WATCH VIDEO Possibly with that dismissal at the back of his mind, Cummins chose to be cheeky in his reply to another question.“My favourite memory of Virat? Can I say when I get him out?,” he said, and followed it up with a smile.ALSO READ: How to watch IPL in Canada In RCB’s earlier match against the Sunrisers in this IPL season, Kohli scored 42. The game saw SRH scoring IPL’s highest ever total as they put up a gigantic 287 for 3 on the board. RCB made a match of it in run-chase but ended up short (262 for 7) and lost by 25 runs. Kohli currently leads the Orange Cap standings with his tally of 379 runs in 8 matches, including one hundred and two fifties. He averages 63.16 and has scored his runs at a strike rate of 150.39. Cummins added that while both he and Kohli are competitive on the field, they are fairly relaxed off it.“We are both super competitive.
