Mitchell Starc opens up on not returning to India for IPL: We saw what happened
Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc recently opened up on his decision to not return to India after the resumption of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). The IPL was suspended for a week after Pakistan attacked several parts of India. However, the tournament was resumed on May 17 after the two countries agreed to a ceasefire. However, several players decided not to return to India due to several reasons. Mitchell Starc, who was representing Delhi Capitals (DC) also pulled out from the last phase of the tournament. The Australia speedster revealed that his focus was shifted to red ball cricket after coming back home as Australia are set to compete in the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2025. “I’m comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled. That’s why I made my decision post-that, and my focus changed to red-ball cricket for about a week prior to coming over here. Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn’t return. But I’ve had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously, we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision,” Strac told Sydney Morning Herald. Furthermore, Starc stressed on his commitment towards Delhi Capitals (DC), saying that he’s not someone who would pull out of the tournaments after being signed. “I’m still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I’m not someone that’s gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like. These are different circumstances,” he added. Starc was one of the vital cogs in Delhi’s bowling attack as he picked 14 wickets from 10 innings at an average of 26.14. Hence, after his inability to return, Delhi suffered massively as they won just one out of their last three matches and got knocked out of the tournament. The 36-year-old made the announcement via an Instagram post. “After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game,” Chawla wrote. “Though I step away from the crease, cricket will always live within me. I now look forward to embarking on a new journey, carrying with me the spirit and lessons of this beautiful game,” he said. Chawla was a member of India’s T20 and ODI World Cup-winning squads in 2007 and 2011 respectively. He represented India in three Tests, 25 ODIs, and seven T20Is, taking 43 wickets across the three formats of the game. “From representing India at the highest level to being part of the victorious 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup squads, every moment in this incredible journey has been nothing short of a blessing. These memories will forever remain etched in my heart,” Chawla said in the post. The leg-spinner was a part of KKR’s 2014 IPL-winning team and hit the winning runs for the Gautam Gambhir-led side in the summit clash against the Punjab Kings in Bengaluru. “A special mention to my late father, whose belief in me lit the path I walked. Without him, this journey would never have been possible,” he stated. Chawla made his competitive cricket debut at 15, and also represented India Under-19 and Uttar Pradesh Under-22 sides. He burst onto the scene when he bowled Sachin Tendulkar with a googly in the Challenger Series 2005-06, and made his his first-class debut at 17. In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being created to support fans injured in this tragic incident,” the team has said in a statement.In a social media statement prior to this, the franchise had said, “RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program and followed the guidance and advice of the local administration,” the RCB said in a statement.“We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.“We urge all our supporters to please stay safe,” RCB said in the statement released late in the evening.Virat Kohli posted on Instagram, “At a loss for words. The inspector told him clearly that if RCB wins, the fans will celebrate all night, and security arrangements will have to be made for that. If the KSCA organises another programme the next day, there will be disruption.”The FIR further stated that RCB, KSCA, and DNA managements, by not providing correct information on passes and free entry to people and fans, created confusion among lakhs of fans that reached the stadium, resulting in pushing and chaos. Star England fast bowler Mark Wood is likely to return from the fourth Test in the upcoming series against India. Wood was ruled out of four months following a knee surgery after the Champions Trophy 2025. The speedster picked just one wicket in two matches as England got knocked out of the first round itself. Recently, England selector Luke Wright revealed that Wood has progressed well on his road to recovery and has started bowling lightly. Wright said he’s expecting Wood to get fit by the fourth or fifth Test and they’re monitoring his recovery one day at a time. “I think Woody’s now started bowling just lightly, to be honest. He’s just off a few paces, but that’s been a great sign. So, he’s on the road to recovery. I think he’s more long-term, if we can get him back, he might have an option for the fourth or fifth Test. But again, each day it’s ticking off each box and making sure he’s OK,” Wright said on Sky Sports. Fast bowler Jofra Archer is also sustaining a thumb injury, which he suffered during the final stages of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025).
