Real Madrid clinch record extending 36th LaLiga title after Girona thrash Barcelona

Real Madrid clinch record extending 36th LaLiga title after Girona thrash Barcelona

Real Madrid claimed a record-extending 36th LaLiga title on Saturday after Girona fought-back to beat Barcelona 4-2, a result that left Carlo Ancelotti’s side with an unassailable lead in the standings. Real Madrid, who have lost only once in the league this season, beat lowly Cadiz earlier on Saturday. They hold a 13-point advantage over second-placed Girona while Barcelona dropped to third with four matches remaining. Real now can turn their attention to a LaLiga-Champions League double as they get ready to host Bayern Munich in the semi-final return leg on Wednesday after snatching a 2-2 draw in Germany last week. It was an afternoon of celebration for Girona too as the win secured them a spot in Europe for the first time after they qualified for next season’s Champions League. A brace from substitute Portu helped surprise package Girona to humble their Catalan rivals for the second time this season. Girona had also beaten Barca away in December by the same score. On Saturday Andreas Christiansen gave Barca the lead in the third minute before Girona hit back a minute later with LaLiga top-scorer Artem Dovbyk heading in the equaliser. Robert Lewandowski put the visitors back in front from the penalty spot after Lamine Yamal was fouled inside the box just before the break and a wasteful Barca missed several chances to extend their lead early in the second half. However, in the 65th minute, in his first action after coming off the bench, Portu netted the equaliser and Miguel Gutierrez scored from a rebound two minutes later to give Girona the lead. A stunning volley from Portu in the 74th minute secured the win. “It’s incredible to look at your shirt and experience this. There is nothing more beautiful than living this,” an emotional Portu told DAZN with tears rolling down his face. “I had a thorn in my side with this club. A few years ago, I experienced the other side, which was relegation and I felt very responsible because I played a lot. Today I made amends with the fans and I can smile again.” If Barcelona end up finishing outside the top two, it will be a further blow to the club which is facing mounting financial problems related to their massive wage bill, a 1.2 billion euro debt and a 1.6 billion euro Camp Nou stadium renovation project. The champions and runners-up of the Copa del Rey and LaLiga contest the lucrative Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, with the winner bagging a potential 6.6 million euros. With four matches remaining, Barca now rely on Girona slipping up if they are to have any chance of contesting the Super Cup. Published By: Kingshuk Kusari Published On: May 5, 2024

Virat Kohli Rant "Shown Half A Dozen Times": Sunil Gavaskar Doesn't Spare Broadcaster In Meltdown

Virat Kohli Rant “Shown Half A Dozen Times”: Sunil Gavaskar Doesn’t Spare Broadcaster In Meltdown

After Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart Virat Kohli went after ‘pundits’ over criticsim of his strike-rate and struggles against spin, India legend Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t willing to keep mum. The iconic batter, on live TV, went on an angry rant ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match between RCB and Gujarat Titans on Saturday. Gavaskar, launching a scathing attack at Kohli, asked why those who continue to stay away from what’s said and written on social media are reacting to ‘outside noise’. Kohli didn’t mince his words as he questioned those ‘sitting inside the box’ about how many games they’ve won for their country. But, Gavaskar wasn’t happy seeing the RCB star turning the tables and putting the commentators in the line of fire. Gavaskar, however, didn’t just criticise Virat but also took a swipe at the broadcaster Star Sports for playing that rant from the opening batter ‘a dozen times’ on television. “That particular post-game interview has been shown on this channel earlier as well, right now, on this particular program it has probably been shown half a dozen times,” he said. “I hope that Star Sports recognises that when that is being shown, asking where are the critics, the critics are the commentators. Your Star Sports commentators are the ones from whom the questions are being asked.” “If you have a strike rate of 118, you come and face the first ball, and then you get out in the 14th or 15th over and your strike rate is 118 – if you want applause for that, then that’s a little bit different,” he said. “But for Star Sports to show the person belittling their own commentators, I’m not sure that’s a great thing. So I think Star Sports needs to understand that they have shown it enough times, everyone’s got the message. So according to Gavaskar saab, no matter how much people cry on kohli everyday Kohli shouldn’t reply his critics pic.twitter.com/9yiAYtXrg8 — POTT (@KlolZone) May 4, 2024 “We’ve all played a bit of cricket, not a lot of cricket, but we speak about what we see. We don’t necessarily have any likes and dislikes. Even if we have likes or dislikes, we actually speak on what’s happening. So, I would be very disappointed if Star Sports show this once more because that will be questioning all us commentators.” What Sunil Gavaskar Said On Virat Kohli’s Rant: Gavaskar was one of those pundits who had questioned Virat Kohli’s intent, going about a strike-rate of around 120 as his team suffered consecutive defeats. The legendary cricketer doubled down on the RCB star, asking if he needed appreciation for a strike-rate of 118. “Commentators questioned only when his strike-rate was 118,” Gavaskar said, responding to Kohli’s rant. “I’m not too sure. I don’t watch too many matches, so I don’t know what the other commentators have said otherwise. But if you come and open and then have a strike of 118 when you get out in the 14th or the 15th over, I mean, if you want applause for that, that’s a little bit different. That’s different.” “All these guys talk about, ‘oh we don’t care about outside noise’. Accha? Then why are you replying to any outside noise or whatever it is. We all played a bit of cricket, not a lot of cricket. We don’t have agendas. We speak about what we see. We don’t necessarily have any likes and dislikes. Even if we have likes and dislikes, we actually speak on what is happening,” he added. What Had Virat Kohli Said? Virat Kohli didn’t mince his words as he slammed those criticising his strike-rate after scoring 44-ball 70 in the match against the Gujarat Titans for the first time this season. “Not really, I think all the people who talk about strike rates and me not playing spin well are the ones who love talking about this stuff. But, for me, it’s about winning the game for the team. And there is a reason you have done this for 15 years,” Kohli said after his match-winning knock against Gujarat in the presentation ceremony. “You have done this, day in and day out. You have won games for your team. And I am not quite sure if you have not been in that situation yourself, to sit and speak about the game from a box. “I don’t think it’s the same thing. For me, it’s about doing the job for the team. People can sit and talk about their own ideas and assumptions of the game. But those who have done it, day in and day out, they know what they are doing. It’s kind of muscle memory for me,” he added. Topics mentioned in this article

Watch: What RCB skipper Faf du Plessis told his team after win over Gujarat Titans |

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis led from the front in his side’s much-needed win over Gujarat Titans (GT) on Saturday in Bengaluru, which kept RCB in the hunt for a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs.IPL 2024: Results | Points Table Opting to bowl, RCB resctrited GT to a below-par 147, after which Du Plessis led RCB’s successful run-chase with his sensational 23-ball 64, including 10 fours and 3 sixes. The RCB bowling performance was spearheaded by Yash Dayal, Vijaykumar Vyshak and Mohammed Siraj, each claiming two wickets. In partnership with fellow opener Virat Kohli, who smashed 42 runs off 27 balls, du Plessis added 92 runs in just 5.4 overs to the get the run-chase off to a flier. Du Plessis was then dismissed by Joshua Little, who starred for GT with his spell of 4/45. However, RCB’s fortunes took a downturn as their middle order collapsed against Little. Nevertheless, the formidable Kohli-Du Plessis partnership had inflicted considerable damage at the start, which alowed veteran finisher Karthik (21* off 12 balls) and Swapnil Singh (15* off 9) to take the team home for a convincing four-wicket win in just 13.4 overs. The day after RCB’s victory, the franchise shared a video on social media, which showed Du Plessis addressing the team inside the dressing room.WATCH VIDEO “Boys, well done tonight! Unbelievable performance. I think from my side I can definitely feel the confidence in the group when we’re out there on the field. So I hope that belief is felt through the group, of how good a team we are when we are playing this style of cricket that we want to play. So, unbelievable effort on that,” said the former South African captain. However, the RCB skipper expressed some concerns for the middle-order collapse in the game, which saw Will Jacks (1), Rajat Patidar (2), Glenn Maxwel (4)l and Cameron Green (1) all falling cheaply. But it didn’t stop RCB from registering their third consecutive victory. “With the bat tonight, I know probably we were not at our best at that last bit of it. But that’s fine, we’ll talk about that in the review. Make sure we celebrate this because we worked hard – three games on the bounce — and we take this momentum with us, we take the confidence with us when we move to the next game. Well done! The win took RCB to No. 7 on the points table. However, their path to the playoffs remains hanging by a thread, requiring them to win their next three matches as well and hope for other results to go their way.

Coach Langer confirms Mayank unlikely to play in rest of seasonLUCKNOW: Playing their last match on home turf, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will have to give it their best shot to edge past Kolkata Knight Riders at the Ekana cricket stadium on Sunday. KKR are a step away from a berth in the Playoffs with 14 spots.IPL ORANGE CAP | IPL PURPLE CAP | IPL POINTS TABLEIn their previous match against Mumbai Indians, LSG were far from convincing as they had to toil hard to chase the modest 145-run target. On the batting side, LSG skipper KL Rahul is in form up the order and has played some fine knocks, smashing fifties against Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.Allrounder Marcus Stoinis also played well against MI, scoring 62 runs, and had also played a spectacular match-winning innings against CSK. Deepak Hooda has also played some decent knocks. Wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran has not been able to make his mark in the last 2-3 matches and it is time for him to put his best foot forward. Top-order batter Quinton de Kock missed the last match against MI and he was back early to the pavilion against Rajasthan Royals. On the bowling side, LSG’s bowlers will also face a harsh test with none of them making a real dent with individual brilliance. In the last match, Mohsin Khan, Marcus Stoinis, Naveen-ul-Haq and Mayank Yadav did well against MI. LSG will now have to go without pace sensation Mayank, who had walked out of the last match against MI due to his side strain acting up.Mayank is unlikely to play in the remainder of the IPL. LSG head coach Justin Langer said, “We’ll be praying that he can play hopefully in the play-offs but I am a realist as well. It will probably be difficult for him to get up for the back end of the tournament. He’s (Mayank) had a scan. He’s got a small tear in a similar area to where his last one (injury) was. So, it’s very unfortunate. We saw the impact he had when he came back into the game.” As for KKR, their bowlers were in excellent form against MI on Friday. Virat Kohli’s brilliant gesture for Dinesh Karthik during Orange Cap presentation as RCB WK’s cameo ensures win vs GT

Royal Challengers Bengaluru held nerves as they overcame a mid-innings wobble to secure a crucial four-wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans on Saturday. Led by a scintillating fifty from captain Faf du Plessis, who blazed his way to 64 runs off just 23 deliveries, RCB showcased their batting prowess, particularly during a blistering opening partnership with Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli’s gesture for Dinesh Karthik during the Orange Cap presentation(IPL) The duo’s explosive partnership of 92 runs in just 35 balls set the tone for RCB’s chase, as they aggressively targeted the Gujarat Titans’ bowling attack, plundering boundaries at will during the powerplay. Despite encountering some tense moments, largely of their own making, RCB’s triumph catapulted them to seventh place on the IPL table, keeping their hopes of a playoff berth alive. With eight points from 11 matches, RCB have an outside chance for a spot in the playoffs. The game also saw Virat Kohli regaining his top spot in the Orange Cap list; after being briefly toppled by Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kohli climbed back to the summit with his 42-run knock in the run-chase. He now has 542 runs in 11 matches in the season and was presented the Orange Cap by Dinesh Karthik, who also played a crucial role in RCB’s win. As RCB lost six wickets within just 25 runs in the run-chase after racing to 92/0 in 5.5 overs, Karthik (21*) steered the sinking ship alongside Swapnil Singh, as the duo remained unbeaten to see the side off to its fourth win of the season. While receiving his cap, Kohli showed a respectful gesture to Karthik, as he bowed towards him. The RCB wicketkeeper, in turn, hugged Kohli. Watch the heartwarming moment: While Kohli has consistently been among the runs for RCB this year, he has lacked support from fellow batters. Karthik, however, has produced some strong performances in his finishing role, saving the side on a number of occasions this season alone. RCB’s remaining games The RCB will now return to action on May 9 as they take on the Punjab Kings, whom they had defeated earlier in the season. Their last two matches are against the teams firmly in contention for playoff spots, too, with Delhi Capitals visiting Bengaluru for a crucial clash on May 12, followed by a rematch against Chennai Super Kings, whom they had faced in the opening game of the season.

“Was Really Ill, Felt I Won’t Be Able to Play”: Mohammed Siraj On Match-Winning Show vs GT

Mohammed Siraj in post-match presentation© BCCI/Sportzpics For Mohammed Siraj, it was mind over matter as he pushed his physically indisposed self to the limits to earn ‘Player of the Match’ award in RCB’s four wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in an IPL match here on Saturday. Siraj removed openers Wriddhiman Saha and opposition skipper Shubman Gill in his first spell to push GT on the backfoot and that went a long way in restricting the visitors to a modest 147. “I was really ill for the last few days. Thought I might not be able to play today but I really wanted to play so it was great that I was able to,” Siraj said after the match. While he wasn’t well, in his mind, he had envisaged how he would bowl that perfectly pitched up delivery which will grow big on the batter and there couldn’t have been a better execution against Wriddhiman, who didn’t have the technique to handle such a ball. “When I woke up in the morning, I thought I won’t be able to play and that I should take rest. When I woke up, I manifested what I wanted to do and that’s exactly what happened,” Siraj said. RCB skipper Faf du Plessis seemed happy to have won three back-to-back matches. “Been really good last couple of games, the way we’ve played with bat and ball. We have been unbelievable on the field. Something around 180-90 would have been a good score,” Du Plessis said. Du Plessis’s 63 off 24 balls with 10 fours and three sixes went a long way in ensuring that RCB climbed to the seventh spot by finishing the game in little under 14 overs. “Probably not the best but you’re trying to be positive, get your net run-rate up. It makes sense from that point of view but it gets to the point when you need to show a bit of calmness and composure – probably around four down, so some lessons to be learned from that.” Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill said that his team now only can focus on winning their remaining games and control the controllables “It depends on the wicket. First couple of overs you get a good idea and play according to that. I think 170-80 on this wicket would have been a good total. How we batted in the powerplay, and how they bowled, decided the game,” he said. “We would have had one extra bowler but losing three wickets in the powerplay (changed planning). Very important to start from zero in our next match and move on from this game. Learn from mistakes and not repeat them. All about winning from here on.” (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.) Topics mentioned in this article

'Difficult' for Mayank Yadav to play remainder of IPL 2024, confirms LSG coach Justin Langer – India TV

‘Difficult’ for Mayank Yadav to play remainder of IPL 2024, confirms LSG coach Justin Langer – India TV

Image Source : PTI Morne Morkel and Mayank Yadav. Teraway pacer, Mayank Yadav, is highly likely to miss the remainder of the IPL (Indian Premier League) 2024 season as Lucknow Super Giants’ head coach, Justin Langer, feels that it will be “difficult for him to get up for the back-end of the tournament”. The LSG pacer is nursing abdominal soreness and though Langer and the entire team management are “praying that he can play”, it looks unlikely to happen. “No, we’ll be praying that he can play, hopefully, in the playoffs, but I’m a realist as well. It’ll be probably difficult for him to get up for the back end of the tournament,” Langer was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. The LSG head coach revealed that the 21-year-old quick has got a “small tear in a similar area to where his last one was” and therefore the rehab might not get him game-ready in time even if the side makes it to the playoffs. “He’s had a scan. He’s got a small tear in a similar area to where his last one was. So it’s very unfortunate. We saw the impact he had when he came back into the game. But we can all sleep. “There will always be a lot of discussion about fast bowlers, and I know he spoke to (Jasprit) Bumrah after the game and he reassured him that if he’s going to be a fast bowler, part of his journey as a young fast bowler, he’s going to get injuries. “So in my experience, every young fast bowler, probably until they get to 25 or 26, is going to experience different injuries. And it’s the most unfortunate. He’s got huge potential. But his rehabilitation was excellent. He went into the game (against Mumbai Indians), had a couple of bowls before the game. He was completely pain-free. So it’s very sad for him and it’s disappointing for LSG as well that he might (not) play the rest of the tournament,” he added.

Anushka Sharma's Reaction As Virat Kohli Survives Run Out Breaks The Internet

Anushka Sharma’s Reaction As Virat Kohli Survives Run Out Breaks The Internet

Anushka Sharma reacting to Virat Kohli surviving a run-out© X (Twitter) Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won their 3rd Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match on the bounce, beating last year’s runners-up Gujarat Titans in a comprehensive manner. After Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis gave the team a 92-run stand for the first wicket, while chasing the target of 148 runs, RCB incurred a dramatic middle-order collapse to go from 92/0 to 117/6. It was Virat who kept the team in the fight while Dinesh Karthik and Swapnil Singh gave the finishing touch. But, the chase might not have been possible had Virat not survived a run-out on the first ball of his innings. During the course of his stay on the crease, Virat also had a big scare that saw him almost get run-out. It was Gujarat Titans star David Miller who made a brilliant stop and threw the ball towards the keeper’s end. Kohli lost his bat and wasn’t even in the frame when the ball passed the stumps. Virat could’ve been dismissed on the very first ball of his innings had the throw hit the stumps. His wife Anushka Sharma, who was in the stands for the match, was snapped by the shutterbugs while reacting to the incident. We’ve been unbelievable in the field as well. The wicket was a bit different, there was a bit more bounce. Wanted to make sure we take that information from the pitch and give it to the bowlers. Yes there was a dropped catch but it’s the effort that we look for and that was there throughout,” said Du Plessis in the post-match presentation. “The games we’ve played here have all been high-scoring, anything around 180-190 would’ve been par. Was important we didn’t look at the scoreboard when we went out to bat and try and play the way we play. Was a bit nervous. Probably not the best assessment from us there. Yes we wanted to go out there and get the total quickly to boost the NRR but probably when we were 4 down, we had to calm down a little bit,” he added. Topics mentioned in this article

Faf du Plessis’s GT blitz praised by Watson: He wanted to do this for RCB all season

Shane Watson praised Faf du Plessis for his whirlwind knock against GT and said that the RCB skipper wanted to play such a knock for his side this season. Du Plessis hit a 23-ball 64 to set the platform for RCB’s win on May 4. The RCB skipper got to his fifty in 18 balls, the second-fastest for the franchise. Du Plessis’ knock helped RCB get the win in the end, despite a small collapse. Speaking to JioCinema, Watson said that it was excellent batting from the RCB skipper and he got the pace and bounce of the wicket very quickly. The former all-rounder said that when Du Plessis is in such a mood, the margin for the bowlers is very low. IPL 2024, RCB vs GT: Match Report | Full Scorecard Watson said that Du Plessis was determined to put the foot down for his side against GT, as evident from his landmark fifty. “Certainly was. Excellent batting. He played these beautiful shots. He got the pace and bounce of the wicket so quickly. And when Faf is in this type of mood, he has access all around the ground. So, the room for error for the bowlers is so small. He has been wanting to do this all season for RCB. He has got off to a start in a couple of innings but hasn’t been able to go through the innings like he did tonight.” IPL 2024 Full Coverage | IPL 2024 Points Table and Standings | 2024 IPL Full Schedule “And now, 18-ball 50 he got. The second fastest for RCB, that showed how Faf put his foot down tonight. His team needed that kick along in the powerplay,” said Du Plessis. How well has Du Plessis performed this season in IPL 2024?Compared to his fantastic 2023 campaign, Du Plessis has had a lacklustre time in IPL 2024. The RCB skipper had scored 730 runs in 14 matches last season and has only 352 to his name this time around. The knock against GT was Du Plessis’ third fifty of the campaign. He is now the second-highest run-getter for RCB this season, behind Virat Kohli. RCB will need to win all their remaining matches to keep their playoff hopes alive.
