Rajat Patidar ends RCB’s 18-year drought, wins IPL trophy in first season as captain

Jun 03, 2025 11:52 PM IST RCB beat Punjab Kings by six runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The long wait finally ended on Tuesday. For 18 years, the phrase “Ee Sala Cup Namde” transformed from a passionate cheer to a punchline for trolls. RCB had come close to the elusive IPL trophy three times before—most recently in 2016—but it was in 2025 that the drought ended. In his first season as captain, Rajat Patidar led the side to their maiden title, as RCB edged out Punjab Kings by six runs in a thrilling final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Krunal Pandya celebrates with captain Rajat Patidar after taking the catch of Punjab Kings’ Nehal Wadhera during IPL 2025 final(PTI) Few expected Patidar to be in the race to become the next captain after RCB had ended ties with Faf du Plessis last October, before the mega auction. The general expectation and the media speculation largely hinted at Virat Kohli’s return to captaincy since stepping down from the role in 2021. However, as Patidar surprisingly took over the role, many doubted his ability to lead the Indian star, not having led an IPL franchise before. However, the 32-year-old led RCB to their maiden IPL title, thus ending their long anticipation. RCB beat PBKS by 6 runs Punjab Kings bowlers did everything they could to restrict Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 190 for nine. But their batters failed to get the job done. RCB managed to get over the line despite not having the best time with the bat. Virat Kohli top-scored with 43 off 35 balls while skipper Rajat Patidar couldn’t build on a good start, managing 26 off 16 balls. For Punjab Kings, Yuzvendra Chahal was brilliant with figures of 1/37 in 4 overs, while Kyle Jamieson had the figures of 3 for 48. Krunal Pandya turned the pressure on PBKS, dismissing impact sub Prabhsimran Singh, even as they made 52/1 in the powerplay, before Bhuvneshwar shut the doors on Punjab when he got rid of Nehal Wadhera and Marcus Stoinis in a span of three deliveries in the 17th over and thereon, RCB’s triumph was only a formality. Virat Kohli fails to hold back tears, sinks to his knees after RCB end 18-year-long wait to be crowned IPL champions

It took 18 years, but it finally happened. Jersey No.18 finally got his hands on the coveted Indian Premier League trophy after Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Punjab Kings by six runs in the 2025 final at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The 36-year-old Virat Kohli, who has been performing season after season and was often left heartbroken as RCB crashed and burned several times in the past, finally became an IPL champion. IPL 2025 Final, RCB vs PBKS: Virat Kohli failed to hold back his tears as RCB ended the 18-year-long wait(RCB – X) After coming close in 2009, 2011, and 2016, the story was completely different in 2025. Unlike previous seasons, RCB put in a completely rounded team performance. The change in strategy paid off, and RCB has a trophy to show in its cabinet for that. There was no overdependence on Kohli in the 18th edition of the IPL, as the focus was on team performance and the other members stepping up.  It is no surprise that Kohli broke down as soon as Josh Hazlewood delivered the final ball of the game, which Shashank Singh hit for a six. Once the final ball was bowled, Kohli fell to the ground and struggled to fight back tears as RCB sealed the contest by six runs. In fact, the first signs of Kohli overcoming emotions emerged when RCB had ensured the win. With 30 needed off the last over, once Hazlewood kept Shashank quiet, the realisation hit. Despite four balls to go, Kohli covered his face with his hands. The next time the camera panned towards him, his eyes were red and moist. And that did it. Also Read: ‘I have given RCB my youth, my prime and my experience’; Virat Kohli after realising IPL dream Once the formalities were over, the entire RCB team came running towards him, the whole contingent sharing a group hug. Rajat Patidar, Krunal Pandya and Jitesh Sharma all charged towards Kohli to celebrate the special achievement. After the win, Hazlewood, Jitesh, and Dinesh Karthik spoke about how the team wanted to win it for Kohli, who has been associated with RCB since the tournament’s inception.   The achievement is all the more special for Kohli as he has played for just one franchise in all 18 editions of the tournament. The batter has performed consistently over the years. However, somehow, the franchise failed to win the tournament. This constant failure led to RCB getting trolled mercilessly. At last, though, the agonising wait came to an end for Kohli and RCB. Virat Kohli hugs AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle As soon as the match was won, RCB legends AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle couldn’t help but rush onto the field to celebrate with Kohli. Kohli also brought his wife, actor Anushka Sharma, to the middle to celebrate the end of RCB’s title drought. In the final against Punjab Kings, Kohli scored 43 runs off 35 balls, and this knock helped propel RCB to 190/9 in their 20 overs. Krunal Pandya then returned with two wickets as RCB won the contest by six runs. It was Romario Shephard who took the crucial wicket of Shreyas Iyer. As soon as the PBKS captain was dismissed, RCB got their noses in front, and the Bengaluru-based franchise marched ahead with confidence.

RCB end 18 years of wait, romp to maiden IPL title with smashing win over Punjab Kings

RCB end 18 years of wait, romp to maiden IPL title with smashing win over Punjab Kings

Do away with all the memes. All the jokes. For the first time in 18 years of the Indian Premier League, RCB are CHAMPIONS. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru defended 190 against an in-form Punjab Kings to end the franchise’s long, agonising and painful wait for a maiden IPL win. Krunal Pandya’s splendid show of 2/17 from four overs knocked the stuffing out of PBKS’ batters, allowing the one-and-only Virat Kohli to realise his dream of what it feels like to have all premier trophies in his cabinet. Kohli was already a World Cup winner, a World T20 champion, and a Champions Trophy holder. He will now wake up on June 4, 2025, as an IPL champion. You can finally say it. RCB are IPL champions(Reuters) For RCB, legends have come and gone. Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Daniel Vettori and even Kohli himself tried their best but couldn’t get RCB over the line. Rajat Patidar, 32, in his first year as captain, outshone them all, cementing his place in the RCB history books. At a venue where 200-run targets have been chaseable without breaking much sweat, RCB must get all the credit in the world for defending a total 10 runs short of. Given the start Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya provided Punjab, the target did not look threatening at all. But once Patidar rolled the dice on his spinners, the wheels began to come off. From 72/1 in the ninth over, PBKS slipped to 98/4 in less than four overs, with Krunal leading the charge. PBKS eventually finished at 184, just six runs shy, only possible due to Shashank Singh’s brilliant half-century, which unfortunately for PBKS, came a little too late. Also Read: RCB vs PBKS IPL 2025 Highlights Punjab Kings launched their chase with confidence, as openers Priyansh and Prabhsimran pounced on loose deliveries. Arya set the tone with a boundary off Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s first over, while Prabhsimran capped it with a towering six. Yash Dayal’s second over proved expensive, leaking runs with a fortunate boundary and a leg-bye four. Josh Hazlewood tightened things up in the third over, but the momentum remained with PBKS. The Aussie pacer struck in the fifth over, removing Arya, and Bhuvneshwar’s economical fourth over kept the run rate in check. By the end of the powerplay, Inglis injected aggression with a six in the sixth over, though RCB squandered a review. Also Read: RCB vs PBKS IPL 2025 final highlights RCB turned to spin to shift the tide, with Krunal delivering a miserly seventh over to stifle PBKS. Suyash Sharma was introduced, but Inglis and Prabhsimran broke free, each hammering a six. Krunal hit back though, dismissing Prabhsimran, and the pressure intensified when Romario Shepherd landed a massive blow, removing Shreyas Iyer. Inglis kept PBKS alive, punishing short balls with another six in Shepherd’s 12th over. However, the game tilted decisively in RCB’s favour when Krunal dismissed Inglis in the 12.1st over, caught by Liam Livingstone at long-on. With all eyes on Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh – PBKS’s last recognised batting pair, but despite a couple of lusty blows, much damage wasn’t inflicted. With the required run rate touching 16 an over, the 17th over, bowled by Bhuvneshwar, was going to be make or break for Punjab. And break it was, with Nehal and Marcus Stoinis perishing in three balls. RCB believed, as did their fans. Even the legendary AB de Villiers rushed out of the commentary box to stand near the boundary. Story of the first innings RCB’s batting lineup, led by the experienced Kohli, struggled to find momentum against a disciplined Punjab Kings attack. The innings began brightly with Phil Salt’s aggressive start, smashing a six and a four off Arshdeep Singh in the opening over to race to 13/0. However, Kyle Jamieson struck early for Punjab, dismissing Salt for 16 in the second over. Kohli and Mayank Agarwal steadied the ship, guiding RCB to 59/1 by the end of the powerplay. Agarwal played fluently, finding boundaries with ease, including an aerial cover drive off Vijaykumar Vyshak. However, Yuzvendra Chahal turned the tables by dismissing Agarwal. Kohli, adopting an anchor role, struggled to accelerate, managing only three boundaries at a strike rate of 123.08. RCB captain Rajat Patidar injected some momentum with a six off Chahal, but his aggressive intent was cut short by Jamieson’s slow yorker. Azmatullah Omarzai further dented RCB’s hopes by dismissing Kohli with a well-directed short ball, which Kohli top-edged. The middle order faltered as Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma failed to capitalise on their starts. Jitesh briefly ignited hopes with two sixes off Jamieson, including a stunning scoop over the keeper, but his departure in the 18th over left RCB at 171/6. Romario Shepherd’s late cameo (four and six in the 19th over) kept RCB’s hopes of crossing 200 alive, but Arshdeep Singh’s sensational final over turned the game decisively. Arshdeep, despite an expensive night earlier, redeemed himself with a match-defining 20th over. He removed the dangerous Shepherd on the second ball, followed by Krunal Pandya two balls later, and capped it off by dismissing Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the final delivery, finishing with three wickets.

IPL 2025 final RCB vs PBKS: Royal Challengers wins cup, ends long wait for maiden title

IPL 2025 final RCB vs PBKS: Royal Challengers wins cup, ends long wait for maiden title

Royal Challengers Bengaluru is no longer the bridesmaid. From being a three-time runner-up, RCB finally scaled the peak to lay claim on the IPL trophy. Seventeen editions of yearning and heartbreak turned into unadulterated joy for the massive fanbase as RCB shut out Punjab Kings by six runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium here on Tuesday. Virat Kohli, the owner of a dazzling array of titles and milestones, added the one highlight missing in the list. Rajat Patidar, in his first season as RCB captain, achieved what many of his exalted predecessors — Kohli, Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, to name a few — could not attain. In front of a packed house, filled predominantly by RCB supporters, the franchise choked a nervy PBKS. RCB seemed to have dropped the ball by making 190 for nine, but more than made up for it with an excellent bowling performance. Victory celebrations started early, when the in-form PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer nicked an innocuous ball outside off stump from medium-pacer Romario Shepherd. Shreyas, the mastermind behind PBKS’ successful chase against Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 2, left the field for one. And with him went PBKS’ own hopes of winning a maiden IPL title. Shepherd may have picked up the big wicket of Shreyas, but it was Krunal Pandya who set it up. Coming into the attack in the seventh over, the left-arm spinner tied the batters in knots by keeping an exceptional length. The 34-year-old conceded just 17 runs in his four overs, to go with the wickets of Prabhsimran Singh and Josh Inglis. Shashank Singh (61 n.o., 30b, 3×4, 6×6) hung around in an attempt to spoil the RCB party, to no avail. Shreyas called it right at the toss, and like he did against MI, chose to field first. Spells of rain a few hours before the start of the outing made the pitch wet, which led to the RCB batters taking a circumspect approach. Save for a cameo from Phil Salt, the RCB top order stayed cautious. Kohli (43, 35b, 3×4) took up the anchor role, keeping the ball along the ground and running quick singles and twos. This did increase the pressure on his partners, who were forced to adopt aggressive tactics. With the run rate dropping below nine an over, RCB needed Jitesh Sharma to go all guns blazing. Jitesh was up for it with a 10-ball 24. PBKS would have felt it did well to restrict RCB to below 200, but there would be no stopping RCB from making history. McGrath’s former trainer Chevell to work at MRF Pace Foundation

Chevell  was instrumental in keeping McGrath fit in his long career. | Photo Credit: R. RAGU The MRF Pace Foundation, headed by its Director of Coaching Glenn McGrath, has brought in Australian trainer Kevin Chevell to work with its trainees this year. Chevell, a former left-arm pacer who played for Western Australia, worked with McGrath and was instrumental in keeping the Aussie pacer fit in his long career. “I give Kev a lot of credit for my success,” says McGrath, who started working with Chevell in 1995 after suffering a side-strain injury. “Strength training is as much about the mental side of preparing yourself as the physical side. You train hard and play easy, not the other way around. And that’s what I’m trying to get over to the young guys here.” “If you put the work in, that makes a massive difference out in the middle. It had a big impact on me. I went from being injured to playing 53 Tests in a row,” the Aussie legend explained. M. Senthilnathan, chief coach, added, “Kevin’s got a different kind of workout, and the work he did for Glenn is proof of his impact. That’s why the management felt like this is the next step we need to get into.” Speaking about his work, Chevell felt that being a cricketer helped him have an understanding of what a player’s body goes through. “The human body works as a whole, integrated system. I put a lot of pressure on them and put them in a spot where they’re up to a big challenge. Once they’ve achieved it, they have grown a little, and they are mentally stronger and tougher. The formula that I am using is repeatable and workable for all cricketers,” says Chevell, who has also worked with Mark Taylor in the past and is currently training the likes of Sam Billings and Zak Crawley.
