"This Is Not A Test Match": Kapil Dev Schools Rohit Sharma Over Jasprit Bumrah's Role

“This Is Not A Test Match”: Kapil Dev Schools Rohit Sharma Over Jasprit Bumrah’s Role

India legend Kapil Dev has questioned the Indian management on not opening the bowling with spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Following Sunil Gavaskar’s criticism on the same issue, Kapil Dev has also joined in. In both of India’s games – and Ireland and Pakistan – it has been Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj who’ve taken the new ball. However, it’s Jasprit Bumrah who has taken the Player of the Match award in both games. After his heroics against Pakistan, shoutsfor Bumrah to open the bowling have increased. “He needs to bowl the first over, he is a wicket-taking bowler,” said Kapil, speaking to ABP News. “If you make him bowl the fifth or sixth bowler, the game can slip out of your hands,” he added. The context to the criticism comes from the fact that India were defending a small total of 119 against Pakistan, and not opening with their deadliest pacer could have left them in a poor position. Bumrah turned the game in India’s favour towards the end, picking up three crucial Pakistan wickets: Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed. He ended with figures of 3/14. “This is not a Test match. This is T20. The quicker you take wickets, the more pressure it puts on the opposition,” said Kapil, India’s leading fast-bowling wicket-taker in Tests. “It is better to have a positive mindset. If Bumrah opens the bowling and picks up a couple of wickets, life becomes easier for the other bowlers as well,” said Kapil. Kapil hailed Bumrah for having exceeded expectations and achieved the status of the best bowler in the world. “We didn’t think he’d be able to play so much cricket, because his action and the way he runs puts pressure on his body and shoulders. But he has proved all of us wrong,” lavished Kapil about Bumrah. India face hosts USA at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, June 12, with the winner booking a place in the Super 8. Topics mentioned in this article

‘Suddenly you see Rohit Sharma at toss…’: USA's Indian-origin players have mixed feelings before World Cup match

‘Suddenly you see Rohit Sharma at toss…’: USA’s Indian-origin players have mixed feelings before World Cup match

As many as seven players in the USA T20 World Cup squadare either born in India or have grown up here. Two of them – Saurabh Netravalkar and Harmeet Singh have even represented India at the U19 World Cup. Batter Milind Kumar has played over 100 first-class and List-A games for Delhi and Sikkim. The others – left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige, captain Monank Patel, fast bowler Jasdeep Singh, and left-arm spinner Nisarg Patel- have played age-group or club-level cricket in India. Nosthush Kenjige (C) of the United States celebrates with captain Monank Patel(AFP) They have played a huge role in making the USA a side to reckon with. USA have already made heads turn at this T20 World Cup by beating Canada and Pakistan. They are sitting at the second spot in Group A and need to win one of their remaining two group games to qualify for the Super 8 stage in the West Indies. Their next opponent, India, will be a different ballgame altogether. Not just because they are the strongest team in the group and one of the contenders to lift the trophy but also because many of the USA squad members once harboured the dream of representing India at this level. Now catch your favourite game on Crickit. Anytime Anywhere. Find out how “Team India, welcome to the United States of America. If we play our best game, we can sort of compete against top cricketers. So we’ll try to take one game at a time and not get overwhelmed by the star-studded team players and try to bowl to a batsman or bat against a bowler. We’ll try to keep it simple,” said Netravalkar. “You dream about this kind of thing and suddenly you see yourself with Rohit Sharma on the toss time. It’s unreal. It’ll be a high-pressure game. Honestly, we don’t want to focus too much from right now. We want to play the brand of cricket. We want to play against all the teams,” said USA’s Gujarat-born captain Monank Patel. “Growing up, I used to look up at Rohit Sharma. Rohit comes from my school. I’ll take things as it comes. Sanju Samson and Kuldeep Yadav, I have played under 19 with them in India. Axar Patel, I’ve played with him as well. So, it’ll be fun catching up and playing against as well,” said Harmeet Singh. “Obviously, we look forward. When we grew up, we were looking forward to play for the country, but things changed, and now we are playing against them. But on the ground, there are no friends. you’re there to win,” said Milind Kumar. “When I was in India, I wanted to put on the Indian jersey, but as you grow up and life happens to you, you just move to a different country. And now the next best thing you can do is play against India. So I would take this anyway ten out of ten times. I think it’s a massive opportunity as a kid growing up, you want to be in the World Cup, sits here. So, yeah, I think nothing to be more just looking forward to it,” said Nosthush Kenjige.

Distinguished Football Coach TK Chathunni Dies At 75

Distinguished Football Coach TK Chathunni Dies At 75

File image of TK Chathunni Former Kerala footballer TK Chathunni, who made a name for himself as a renowned coach, died on Wednesday at the age of 75 in Kochi following a brief illness, the All India Football Federation said. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. He was a top-rated defender during the 1960s and 1970s and also played for India during the Merdeka Tournament 1973 in Kuala Lumpur. Having featured in six international matches for India, he also played for clubs like EME Centre (Secundrabad), Vasco Club (Goa) and Orkay Mills (Mumbai), besides also featuring for Services in the National Football Championship for the Santosh Trophy. But it was in coaching where he made a name for himself, having credited for unearthing talents like former greats IM Vijayan, Bruno Coutinho and Jo Paul Anchery among others. As a coach, he helped Mohun Bagan win their maiden national league title, then NFL, during the 1997-98 season. He also holds the distinction of coaching highest number of clubs in the country including that of FC Kochin, Salgaocar FC, Dempo Sports Club and Churchill Brothers. He coached Kerala Santosh Trophy team, Kerala Police among others. Describing Chathunni as a top class coach, AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey said: “Chathunni was a dependable defender and later a top-class coach. I extend my sincerest condolences to his family at this time of sorrow.” AIFF acting secretary general M Satyanarayan stated: “TK Chathunni was a reputed footballer of his time and continued to inspire footballers of later generations with his coaching. His death has created a void in Indian football.” (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) Topics mentioned in this article

India's Predicted XI Against USA: Rohit Sharma To Make 2 Changes; Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja Out?

India’s Predicted XI Against USA: Rohit Sharma To Make 2 Changes; Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja Out?

India Predicted Playing 11 vs USA: India will be squaring off against co-hosts and debutants USA for their next T20 World Cup 2024, Group A match on Wednesday in New York. After pulling-off a stunning victory against Pakistan in a low-scoring thriller, Rohit Sharma and co would be eager to add another win to their brilliant World Cup campaign. On the other hand, USA, who are making their first appearance in the T20 World Cup, left everyone utterly impressed with a surprising Super Over win over Pakistan. The Monank Patel-led side, which is filled with some former Indian players, will look to put up a good show against the might India. In the first two games, India’s weakest link was Shivam Dube. The Chennai Super Kings’ most valued ‘Impact Player’ is finding it tough on two-paced tracks where the ball is gripping and coming late onto the bat. But unlike tactician-par-excellence MS Dhoni, who could bench him during CSK’s bowling in the IPL, national skipper Rohit Sharma doesn’t have such luxury and needs to hide him in areas of the field where the ball is expected to travel less. Dube is a monstrous hitter of spinners on good flat decks and his military medium seam-up stuff does give the Indian skipper cushion to manoeuvre with the bowling combination. But in a format like T20, the team management, which asked for Dube at the expense of Rinku Singh, would want him to come good. Else, there is Yashasvi Jaiswal in the 15, who is a way more rounded batter than the big-bodied Mumbaikar. Two wrist spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, should be given some game time or else they might just enter the Super Eights a bit undercooked in the Caribbean where the pitches will be more spin-friendly. India’s Predicted XI against USA: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh (With PTI Inputs) Topics mentioned in this article

‘The problem with Virat Kohli is…’: How Sanjay Manjrekar wants star India batter to play in T20 World Cup | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar advised Virat Kohli to play a in slightly conservative approach on hard wickets in New York ahead of India’s ICC T20 World Cup match against the USA.At the Nassau County International Stadium on Wednesday, the third Group A match of the T20 World Cup between India and the USA will take place. India had won a low-scoring thriller over Pakistan by six runs in their previous encounter.T20 WORLD CUP: SCHEDULE | POINTS TABLEThe United States of America defeated Pakistan in the Super Over. With four points from two wins in two games, India lead the group. With the identical win-loss record, the USA is in second position, though their net run rate is inferior. With scores of just one and four runs against Ireland and Pakistan, Virat – the greatest run scorer in the history of the competition – hasn’t had the finest start to the competition. He was dismissed both times while playing aggressively.Virat enters the competition following an incredible Indian Premier League (2024) season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), where he amassed 741 runs at 61.75 and a strike rate of 154.69 in 15 innings, including five hundreds and a century. Virat had the best strike rate of his IPL career and was quite effective against spinners, using a more aggressive strategy against them.Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar stated that although Virat has adjusted his style in response to criticism regarding his supposedly low strikeout rate, the “old Virat” would have performed better on New York’s hard pitches, where it has been difficult to score runs and batters have played cautiously.“The problem with Virat Kohli is that there has been a lot of talk about his strike rate over the last two years, and he completely changed that during this IPL season. His strike rate had reached 150, although others had almost 200, but that is a different topic. He probably must have come to the T20 World Cup with that same mindset, but given the pitches, the old Virat Kohli would have been much better,” said Manjrekar.“So, I feel someone should tell him to bring back that earlier version of himself and then change again when the pitches become flat,” he added. India bowling coach terms team's performance vs Pakistan 'best ever' in T20Is – India TV

India bowling coach terms team’s performance vs Pakistan ‘best ever’ in T20Is – India TV

Image Source : GETTY Team India Team India has won both its matches so far in the ongoing T20 World Cup against Ireland and Pakistan. While it was a cakewalk against Ireland, the performance of the men in blue against arch-rivals Pakistan defending 119 runs is certainly being termed one of the best. The bowling unit led by Jasprit Bumrah clicked in unison on the day as India restricted the opposition to just 113 runs in 20 overs. The bowling coach Paras Mhambrey is delighted with the team’s show with the ball so far terming the effort from the bowlers the best in the format. While speaking ahead of the game against the USA, he recalled India’s best bowling performances under him in Tests against South Africa. “Well, there were a couple of them. I thought in a different format. I thought the Test win in South Africa, the last game that we played in South Africa was phenomenal. “But yeah, if you look at the context of the game, if you look at the tournament, the pressure, the way we handled the pressure, this was definitely very much up there in terms of the performance, fabulous performance,” Mahmbrey said on the eve of the USA clash. Meanwhile, Paras Mhambrey has also cautioned the Indian team to take USA seriously as they are coming off brilliant wins over Canada and Pakistan. He also pointed out that no team can be taken lightly in a World Cup. “You can’t take any game lightly. This is the World Cup. Every game matters. Your rhythm is important. Winning is a habit that you need to get into early. You need to get in early to perform. “I think in the context of the game, every game is important. So, for us, it’s going to be like any other game. It’s like we played Pakistan, like we played Ireland (both full members of the ICC). It’s going to be a similar game for us,” India’s bowling coach added.
