Dinesh Karthik reveals Hardik Pandya’s retirement-hinted sledge during IPL 2024

Dinesh Karthik reveals Hardik Pandya’s retirement-hinted sledge during IPL 2024

India and RCB wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik revealed how MI captain Hardik Pandya sledged him hinting at his retirement, when the two sides met during the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. In a recent conversation with Cricbuzz, Karthik reflected on the numerous types of sledging he has received over his significantly long cricketing career, which also includes ones by the likes of Hardik and Virat Kohli. With RCB’s impressive IPL 2024 season coming to an end after RR ended their 6-match winning streak during the Eliminator, many have speculated and sent in wishes to Karthik, considering it his last match as a professional cricketer. Karthik’s brilliant IPL career has seen him play for as many as six teams in the IPL, with close to 5000 runs over 17 seasons, which also includes 145 catches and 37 stumpings. Karthik is also the joint second-most capped player in the competition with his 257 appearances, alongside Rohit Sharma and only behind CSK’s MS Dhoni and his 264. Even in IPL 2024, Karthik played a crucial role in the RCB batting order and their late revival in the competition with his 326 runs in his 15 matches. His stint this season also included a brilliant knock of 83 runs in just 35 balls during RCB’s home fixture against a fiery SRH. In the conversation with Cricbuzz, Karthik reflected on the times he was sledged by Hardik, and even Kohli, while shedding a light on his career. “Every time I played against RCB and Virat Kohli caught my catch, ‘Ben Stokes’ came out of his mouth for sure. But that was a send-off. Hardik Pandya sledged me saying ‘Abhi leg-spinner aaya, iska thank you hi hai’ [Now a leg spinner will come, and it is Thank You time] Then I had to play a couple of shots, and then he was like ‘Theek hai, thoda improve hogaya lag raha hai’. [Looks like he’s improved a bit]. That was good,” Dinesh said. “He’s a good friend. He was also like ‘commentator banke bhi thoda kaam kar raha hai’. [Even after becoming a commentator, he’s working on his game] That was fun. Rohit Sharma was also taunting me this year… unnecessarily giving me hopes,” Karthik added. With his time as a professional having seemingly come to an end, Karthik might look to explore his avenues as a commentator and was recently added to the commentary panel for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. 'Choose wisely': Sourav Ganguly makes veiled comment as BCCI hunt for new India coach | Cricket News

‘Choose wisely’: Sourav Ganguly makes veiled comment as BCCI hunt for new India coach | Cricket News

With Rahul Dravid‘s tenure as India coach ending after the T20 World Cup in June, the hunt for India’s new head coach has already gathered pace, with reports suggesting BCCI’s interest tilted towards Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor and former India opener Gautam Gambhir. However, in a post on X on Thursday, former BCCI president and India captain Sourav Ganguly seemed to have indirectly advised the BCCI to “choose…wisely”.“The coach’s significance in one’s life, their guidance, and relentless training shape the future of any person, both on and off the field. So choose the coach and institution wisely…” Ganguly wrote on ‘X’.Ever since Gambhir guided KKR to their third IPL title, he has been tipped to take over from Dravid. It was under Gambhir’s captaincy that the Kolkata franchise won its two previous titles in 2012 and 2014. He returned to KKR as mentor ahead of the 2024 edition, after a similar role with Lucknow Super Giants, and the move played a crucial role in KKR’s triumphant run this season.Monday (May 28) was the last date to apply for the job of Team India’s chief coach and BCCI secretary Jay Shah meeting Gambhir after KKR’s title triumph made the speculations gain strength.A recent report in Cricbuzz has stated that Gambhir’s appointment is almost certain and negotiations are underway on multiple fronts. “A very high-profile owner of an IPL franchise, who is very close to the BCCI top brass, said that Gambhir’s appointment is a done deal and the announcement will come soon. A high profile commentator, who is very clued to the happenings in the BCCI said efforts are being made to rope in Gambhir. The fact that an announcement has not yet come suggests that negotiations are underway on multiple fronts — between the two parties and, perhaps, with some others too,” the report said. The BCCI secretary also refuted reports saying the board has approached Australian cricketers, namely Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, for the role. “Neither I nor the BCCI have approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The reports circulating in certain media sections are completely incorrect,” Shah said in a statement.

Then I had to play a couple of shots and then he was like ‘theek hai, thoda improve hogaya lag raha hai’ (okay, looks like he has improved a little]. That was good. He’s a good friend. He was also like ‘Commentator banke bhi thoda kaam kar raha hai’ (Even after becoming a commentator he’s working on his game) That was fun,” Karthik said. Virat Kohli: T20 World Cup: Uncertainty looms over Virat Kohli’s participation in warm-up match | Cricket News

While the other 18 cricketers, including four reserves, began their training session in New York on Wednesday, Kohli’s arrival is still pending.Kohli was recently seen in Mumbai with his wife Anushka Sharma and former India cricketer Zaheer Khan and he has reportedly requested an extended break after the grueling two-month-long Indian Premier League. “There has been no update on his travel status from the BCCI yet,” reported ESPNCricinfo. Amid Hunt For India’s Next Head Coach, Sourav Ganguly Posts Intriguing Message

File photo of Sourav Ganguly© X (formerly Twitter) The hunt for Indian cricket team’s next head coach is underway and many names have emerged as options for the highly coveted position. Current head coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure ends after the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 and media reports suggested that BCCI have already approached certain individuals for the job. The names that are being considered the favourties at the moment are Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra with reportedly less interest from foreign coaches. Amid all the discussion over the position, former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly took to social media to post an intriguing message. The coach’s significance in one’s life, their guidance, and relentless training shape the future of any person, both on and off the field. So choose the coach and institution wisely… — Sourav Ganguly (@SGanguly99) May 30, 2024 “The coach’s significance in one’s life, their guidance, and relentless training shape the future of any person, both on and off the field. So choose the coach and institution wisely…,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter). The deadline for applications was till May 27 but reports suggested that the BCCI are in no hurry to select Dravid’s successor. The Indian cricket team players are currently focused on the T20 World Cup 2024 and the report said that it is possible that National Cricket Academy (NCA) coaches can go with the team in some future tours if no decision is taken. “The deadline is fine, but the BCCI brass wouldn’t mind taking some more time before reaching a decision. Right now, the team will be busy with World T20 for the better part of the month of June. After that seniors will be rested from tours of Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe where any of the NCA-based senior coaches can accompany the team. So what’s the hurry,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Topics mentioned in this article

Chasing a mammoth total of 303 runs, the Nida Dar-led side was bundled out for a mere total of just 124 runs in 29.1 overs. The Pakistan team seemed struggling with the bat from the start of the second innings as they lost the wicket of the opener Sadaf Shamas when the team score was just 4. At the score of 14, the other opener, Sidra Ameen was sent back to the pavilion after scoring just 10 runs. After the two quick wickets, Muneeba Ali and Ayesha Zafar tried to stitch a partnership but both players were able to add just 21 runs to the total as the visitors lost the wicket of Zafar in the seventh over. The team completed its fifty in the 11th over with Muneeba and Najiha Alvi unbeaten on the crease. Both batters put on a partnership of 39 runs before Alvi was dismissed after scoring just 6 runs when the team score was 74 in the 16th over. Inside the 22 runs, the Pakistan team lost two wickets. Muneeba was dismissed after sc boring 47 runs with the help of seven boundaries when the team’s score was 95, and they lost the other wicket at the score of 96 when Fatima Sana was sent back to the dressing room without opening her account. Three more players, Nashra Sandhu, Diana Baig, and team;s skipper Nida Mir were sent back without scoring a single run for their side. Aliya Riaz scored some runs for her side but she didn’t get any support from the other end. She scored 36 runs with the help of six fours before going back. The pick of the bowlers for the hosts was left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone who snapped three wickets in her spell of 4.1 overs where she conceded just 15 runs. Two wickets were bagged by Lauren Bell and Sciver-Brunt, and one wicket each were taken by Kate Cross and Charollete Dean in their respective spells Opting to bat first, Tammy Beaumont was deceived by a delivery that nipped back in on her at the last moment and was bowled by Fatima Sana. Beaumont, restricted to only 11 runs from her first 21 balls, looked to the unorthodox and attempted to scoop her 22nd but was bowled by Fatima. Captain Heather Knight came out to bat and she got immediately off the mark with four, albeit from an inside-edged drive that the England skipper was fortunate to see scoot safely past her stumps. In the span of two overs, England lost Maia Bouchier and Knight for 12. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danielle Wyatt then handled the charge for England and took the host beyond the 100-run mark in the 20th over. Pakistan captain Nida Dar continued with the ball and she bagged the wicket of well-set batter Danielle Wyatt for 44. Wyatt tried to take on Dar, but her innings came to an end as she was caught in the deep close to the midwicket boundary by Ameen. Sciver-Brunt picked up the gap through midwicket off the front foot for four to bring up a stylish half-century from 58 balls and her 21st half-century in ODI cricket. In the 48th over of the game, Sciver-Brunt raised her bat for her ninth ODI hundred – her third against Pakistan. Alice Capsey and Sciver-Brunt’s partnership stand of 87 runs off 77 balls helped England post 302/5 in 50 overs. Brief score: Pakistan 124 all out in 29.1 overs vs England 302/5 . "It's A Shame": AB De Villiers On Racial Quota Chatter Around South Africa's T20 World Cup Squad

“It’s A Shame”: AB De Villiers On Racial Quota Chatter Around South Africa’s T20 World Cup Squad

AB De Villiers is not surprised that just days before South Africa renews its quest for an elusive World Cup, the talk back home is all about racial quota in the team. It’s a rinse-and-repeat sort of situation and de Villiers, who retired in 2018, is glad that he is a mere spectator to the situation now. “…it’s a shame going into a tournament to have the focus on that. I mean it’s nothing new, it’s just a shame,” lamented one of the greats of South African cricket. “Luckily this time around, I’ve had nothing to do with anything over there. I’m just a spectator,” the 40-year-old said in an interaction with PTI facilitated by ‘Jio Cinema’. The cause of outrage is the presence of just one black player in the squad for the T20 showpiece that will take place in the Americas from June 1. Considered the perennial bridesmaids, who tend to choke in crunch situations, South Africa somehow are always in the pre-tournament favourites bracket without actually living up to the tag. And having a deeply divisive topic take centre-stage just days before they begin their campaign is a far-from-ideal build-up for a country that has a troubled past when it comes to race relations. The Proteas will start off against the Netherlands in New York on June 8. Over the course of a season, six players of colour are required to be in the South Africa playing eleven including two from the black African community as per the policy introduced in 2016. With Kagiso Rabada being the only black African in the T20 World Cup squad, the national team is set to miss its target. Another black-African, Lungi Ngidi, is part of the travelling reserves. The other players of colour include Reeza Hendricks, Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi and Ottniel Baartman. “There are controversial moments back home as per usual with the South African squad just before a World Cup,” de Villiers said. “I think it’s a good team. It’s a shame about Lungi… (he) lost a bit of form, had a couple of injuries. Otherwise, he most probably would have been in the squad and there wouldn’t have been any controversial stuff back home,” he added. At the moment, Cricket South Africa doesn’t have a committee of selectors and the team is picked by head coaches Shukri Conrad (Tests) and Rob Walter (white-ball cricket). “Sometimes these things happen and it puts you under a bit of pressure as a selection panel and as a coach and a captain,” de Villiers said. “From what I remember is with the quota system, it’s an average team, an average number over the season and they don’t really look at every series, but as journalists sometimes enjoy steaming up things a bit,” he tried to put things in context. Following the selection of the squad earlier this month, former Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and former CSA and ICC president Ray Mali questioned the composition of the side. “Only one African player selected in the Proteas Team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 Team. Definitely a reserval (reversal) of the gains of transformation and doesn’t reflect fair representation of all South Africans in the national cricket tea,” Mbalula wrote on X. On SABC Sport, Mali said the game is heading backwards in the country. “I believe a lot has been achieved, but I believe we have gone backwards in terms of cricket – we have taken a step backwards instead of going forward,” said Mali. But de Villiers was a bit more empathetic towards those who made the choices and said he does not see anything sinister in the process. “Maybe they are short. Maybe they are well within their right to do whatever they were needed to do in this World Cup. “Keeping in mind there were a couple of injuries, a couple of out of form players. It’s never easy,” he said. On the upside, South Africa’s IPL stars have displayed ominous form in the preceding T20 league and that would surely give them confidence to go the distance in the World Cup too. Impact Player rule in IPL needs to be relooked ============================ Talking about the recently-concluded IPL, de Villiers said the Impact Player rule , which helped teams amass 250-plus totals as many as eight times this season, needs to be revised. “…what I really didn’t enjoy about the rule is actually subbing players who have already taken part in the game. That part of the rule doesn’t make sense. I feel it needs to be a fair swap. “If someone hasn’t taken part in the game, he needs to be swapped. If you feel that you are going to lack in the bowling or batting department, it’ll just make it a bit harder to strategise and it’ll be more of a risk to swap someone.” He also wants more than two fielders outside the ring in the powerplay. “I still feel T20 cricket needs to be a batters game, that’s why the fans come to the parks. They want to see the ball flying all over the park and into the night sky,” he said. “But I still you still want to see the bowlers outsmart batters sometimes…in the first six overs by maybe easing up on the restrictions. “Whether that’s four or five outside, I don’t know exactly but at least the bowler can plan,” he reasoned.  Topics mentioned in this article

Virat Kohli recalls ‘nervous’ World Cup debut: Helped me to be aware and alert

Virat Kohli went down the memory lane to the ODI World Cup in 2023 when he made his debut at the biggest stage. Kohli, who was only into his second year in international cricket, played the tournament opener against Bangladesh on February 19 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Kohli admitted that he had butterflies in his stomach after getting the chance to play alongside the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and others. Kohli recalled the moments before India’s warm-up match against Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup 2024 on June 1 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. “It was against Bangladesh in Dhaka, my first game and I was nervous. Yes, I will not lie. There is a different sense of excitement in the air when you come for a World Cup and I could obviously sense that. I was the youngest member of that team and I was getting to play with all these greats of Indian cricket in a World Cup game,” Kohli said on an interview with Star Sports. ‘It was a good sign’ Kohli had an outing to remember after he scored an unbeaten 100 off 83 balls with 8 fours and 2 sixes. He was also involved in a partnership of 203 runs with Sehwag, who tormented the opposition bowlers with a knock of 175. From there on, Kohli hasn’t looked back and currently has 1795 runs to his name from 37 matches at an average of 59.83 with 5 centuries. “For me it was definitely a moment where I was a bit nervous heading into the game and definitely the night before I was quite nervous but that is a good sign as well because your body is preparing you to enter a situation where you’re alert, you’re not taking things for granted. I think that nervousness helped me to be aware, be alert and be absolutely precise in the execution of my plans,” he added. Kohli is expected to play a big part for the Men in Blue when they start their T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 against Paul Stirling’s Ireland.
