Team India’s record against every opposition in T20 World Cup history – India TV

Image Source : GETTY Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the T20 World Cup 2022 game against Netherlands in Sydney in October 2022 Indian cricket team will kick off their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign against Ireland at New York’s Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 5. The Men in Blue will enter the ninth edition of the tournament as the no.1 side in the ICC rankings and are favourites to mount a title challenge. India relatively face easy road to Super 8 having drawn with USA, Canada, Ireland and Pakistan in Group A. India won the opening edition of the tournament in 2007 and reached the finals in 2014. But the Rohit Sharma-led Indian side failed to impress in last three editions with just 10 wins oon 16 matches. In head-to-head records, India enjoy dominant history against Pakistan in past T20 World Cup editions but remain without a win against New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Indian cricket team has played 44 matches in the first eight T20 World Cup editions and have won 28 times. Notably, India have played against 14 different teams in tournament history and maintain unbeaten record against 7 teams. Against neighbours Pakistan, India have won the highest six wins in seven meetings so far. India boast all-win record against Bangladesh and defeated South Africa four times in six encounters. However, India’s performance against big teams is not covincing. India have won just once in four encounters against West Indies and have lost all three matches against New Zealand. Vaughan's 'better preparation to play IPL than face Pakistan' statement receives approval from ex-PAK star

Vaughan’s ‘better preparation to play IPL than face Pakistan’ statement receives approval from ex-PAK star

England and Pakistan are preparing for the 2024 T20 World Cup by facing each other in a four-match T20I series. However, the preparations have been hampered somewhat with two of the three matches that have taken place thus far being washed out. The second T20I, the only game in the series that could take place thus far, was a rather one-sided affair with England comfortably winning it by 23 runs. While much of the league stage of the tournament was done, captain Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Phil Salt and Reece Topley could have all played a part in the playoffs England pulled their players out of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) for playing in this series. While much of the league stage of the tournament was done, captain Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Phil Salt and Reece Topley could have all played a part in the playoffs. In the case of Salt, he could have played in the final as well, where his side Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to win their third IPL title. Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that playing in the high pressure environment of the IPL playoffs would have been better preparation for the players instead of playing a T20I series at home against Pakistan. Unlock exclusive access to the latest news on India’s general elections, only on the HT App. Download Now! Download Now! The comment caused a bit of a stir among Pakistan fans but former wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has now said that he agrees with Vaughan, even though his opinion is a “painful” one. “Over the past few days, I have wondered why a former England captain is commenting and taking Pakistan cricket non-seriously. It has been a painful thought, but I think he was correct in his assessment,” Akmal said on his YouTube channel. “Everybody knows the level of Pakistan cricket. We are losing against smaller teams like Ireland and in that sense Vaughan said that it is not a tough series. So the fault is ours. Had it been any other team like New Zealand, South Africa and India then Vaughan would not have said it,” he added. “We need to understand that in IPL, the best bowlers and batters are participating with crowds of 40 to 50,000. So it is tough cricket and quality cricket,” he explained. The absence of England players made a significant difference to the IPL teams with Rajasthan Royals missing the services of Buttler at the top of the order. KKR also missed the solidity provided by Salt and Sunil Narine at the top of the order. Jacks played a significant role in RCB’s extraordinary revival in the league stage. Suspense Over Virat Kohli's Absence From T20 World Cup Training Ends. Internet Says "GOAT Is Coming"

Suspense Over Virat Kohli’s Absence From T20 World Cup Training Ends. Internet Says “GOAT Is Coming”

Star batter Virat Kohli was a notable absentee from India’s first training session ahead of the T20 World Cup. Team India, led by captain Rohit Sharma, trained in New York earlier this week with a light cardio session. The Indian team also hit the nets on Thursday, but there were no signs of Kohli at any of the sessions so far. After Kohli did not travel with the team to the Big Apple, multiple reports emerged on social media, claiming that the former India captain had asked for a break from the BCCI following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League. It had also been reported that Kohli would miss India’s warm-up game against Bangladesh on June 1. Amid suspense around Kohli’s absence, the star batter was spotted at the Mumbai airport on Thursday night. In a viral video, Kohli interacted with the paparazzi outside the airport, and also signed autographs for fans. Virat Kohli giving autograph to fans at the airport. However, he was nowhere to be seen in the photos and videos shared on social media. The 35-year-old has been the backbone of India’s batting line-up since the last decade. His records at the ICC events are spectacular. In the last ODI World Cup in 2023, he broke legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s famous record after amassing 765 runs in the single edition of the tournament to clinch the Player of the Tournament accolade. The right-handed batter, who is also the highest run-getter in T20Is, will eye to replicate his Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 form in the T20 extravaganza after finishing the cash-rich league as the top run-scorer. The 35-year-old will play a crucial role in India’s campaign in the tournament. (With IANS Inputs) Topics mentioned in this article

Dipa Karmakar on her historic triumph in Asian Championships – India TV

Image Source : DIPA KARMAKAR/X Dipa Karmakar during the Asian Senior Championships 2024 in Tashkent on May 26, 2024 India’s ace gymnast Dipa Karmakar revealed how she rose from the doping suspension to script a historic Gold medal at the Asian Senior Championships 2024. She entered the record books by becoming the first Indian gymnast to win gold at women’s vault event in Asian Senior Championships in Tashkent on Sunday, May 26. The 30-year-old gymnast from Tripura finally get her hands on the yellow metal after a series of blows to her personal and professional career. She missed out on Summer Olympic Games qualification for the second time in a row and served a 23-month doping suspension last year.  Karmakar talked about her desire to win a medal after going through a suspension and fitness issues in last couple of years. Once again, she denied her involvement in doping and added that she wanted to give one last try at Gold after started practicing again. “I had been too sad for a few years now,” Dipa Karmakar told IndianExpress. “I was sick of feeling sad so I wanted a medal badly. The doping suspension hurt because I believed I hadn’t done anything wrong, and on some days I saw no point in continuing to live. But when I started practicing again, I knew I couldn’t leave the sport without giving one last try. “My body can’t take the training load as before but I’m technically very strong. Once the competition series starts, I don’t care who’s ahead of me, who’s behind me, I visualise my routine and give it 100 percent. I’m not scared.” Karmakar made the headlines after clinching a Bronze in the 2015 edition of the Asian Championships in China and then finished fourth in the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, she missed the Paris Olympics qualification despite recording a score of 46.166 in the Asian Championships, the final qualifier.

No More 'Crazy' Rivalries As Best Friends Aryna Sabalenka, Paula Badosa Meet At French Open

No More ‘Crazy’ Rivalries As Best Friends Aryna Sabalenka, Paula Badosa Meet At French Open

The dark “intense, crazy” days when the likes of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova bitterly and publicly aired their grievances are long gone, says Aryna Sabalenka. To illustrate her point, world number two Sabalenka will happily take on best friend Paula Badosa for a place in the last 32 of the French Open on Saturday. It will be the pair’s seventh meeting but first at a Grand Slam. “It’s always tough to play your best friend on tour,” said Australian Open champion Sabalenka. “But we know how to separate court and life. So it’s always a great battle. I always enjoy playing against her.” She added: “I would say that right now the top 10 players are all good with each other, and there are no big fights outside of the court.  “It’s not like we are best friends, but it’s not something crazy, like intense.” Ten years or so ago, such warmth was rare. Back in 2013, Williams hit out at a top five player she described as “boring”. “She’s not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.” Williams didn’t name Sharapova but the Russian, as well as most other observers, viewed it as a reference to her relationship with Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov. Sharapova hit back at Williams and her relationship with her French coach Patrick Mouratoglou. Elsewhere, the American once arrived at a press conference wearing a shirt that said “Are you looking at my titles?” That was a reference to being ranked number two after winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon while Dinara Safina was at number one despite never claiming a major. At the 2012 Australian Open, meanwhile, Polish player Agnieszka Radwanska criticised Sharapova’s infamous grunting on court. “Isn’t she back in Poland already?” came the icy retort from Sharapova after Radwanska’s exit. There will be no similar trash talking ahead of Sabalenka’s clash with Badosa. “She has a big personality, she’s a good girl, always bringing good energy, even on court,” said Spanish star Badosa. “I think it’s going to be fun. Of course sharing the court with her after all these results she’s doing and all this is a pleasure for me.” Should Badosa lose for a fifth successive time against Sabalenka, she’ll find support from boyfriend and world number nine Stefanos Tsitsipas, a former runner-up at the French Open. “I’m really grateful to have someone like him by my side. Also in the next few days, we’re going to play mixed doubles, so also sharing the court with him, I think it makes it even more special.” (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) Watch: Virat Kohli leaves for the USA, gives autograph to fan at Mumbai Airport

Virat Kohli has left for the USA for the T20 World Cup from Mumbai. Kohli was spotted at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport, Mumbai during the evening of May 30, Thursday. In a heart-warming gesture, Kohli stopped to give an autograph to a young fan at the airport. The star India batter was surrounded by media personnel, who thanked Kohli for giving them an amazing gift. Kohli and wife Anushka Sharma had sent out thoughtful gift hampers to the paparazzi for safeguarding and respecting their kids, Vamika and Akaay’s privacy. On being thanked by the media, Kohli was quick to point out that it was Anushka’s idea, yet again showing his love and admiration for his wife. A couple of fans came to click a picture with Kohli, who had opted for a monotone airport look with a beige cap and beige shirt. Kohli did not join the first batch of the Indian team, who flew to New York from Mumbai on June 25. Why Kohli did not fly earlier? Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja were amongst the first batch of Indian cricketers who left for the US ahead of the T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies from June 1 to June 29. Kohli remained to be the only player who was yet to join the team in the Americas. He could not travel earlier due to paper work issues. After a gruelling IPL 2024, Kohli also got a chance to spend some precious time with his family. He was recently spotted outside a popular Mumbai eatery alongside wife Anushka. The celebrity couple went out for dinner with India’s former pacer Zaheer Khan and wife Sagarika Ghatge. Popular TV broadcaster Gaurav Kapur also accompanied the 2 cricketers and their partners. Kohli had a spectacular run in IPL 2024 as he was awarded the Orange Cape with 714 runs in 15 matches. The 35-year-old will look to continue his impeccable form in the T20 World Cup as well. Meanwhile, the Indian team have begun their training camp in New York and will play their warm-up game against Bangladesh on June 1. Published By: Diya Kakkar Published On: May 30, 2024

Novak Djokovic Untroubled At French Open As Fans Hit By Alcohol Ban

Novak Djokovic Untroubled At French Open As Fans Hit By Alcohol Ban

Novak Djokovic reached the French Open last 32 for the 19th successive year on Thursday as Roland Garros organisers banned alcohol from the stands in an effort to counter growing complaints from players over disrespectful, rowdy fans. Defending champion Djokovic cracked 43 winners past Spain’s 63rd-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena to canter to a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 win. The three-time champion, seeking a record 25th Grand Slam title, goes on to face either Gael Monfils of France or Italian 30th seed Lorenzo Musetti. Djokovic holds a 19-0 winning record against Monfils and has defeated Musetti four times in five meetings. However, the Italian gave the Serb a major scare at the French Open in 2021 when he won the first two sets before having to retire injured in the decider. “It was a difficult match against Roberto. He hit a lot of very good and precise shots,” said Djokovic. “The last game of the first set I played really well and started to play at a higher level. At the end of the match I was then playing very well.” Also easing through to the third round on another rain-hit day in the French capital were women’s title contenders Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina. However, the behaviour of fans at the tournament, which was brought into focus by Belgium’s David Goffin’s claim that he had chewing gum spat at him, prompted a series of measures to clampdown on loutish behaviour. “Alcohol has been allowed in the stadiums until now but that’s over,” tournament director Amelie Mauresmo told reporters. However, alcohol including beer from mobile vendors, will still be sold around the grounds. Mauresmo said fans will be ejected if they throw something at a player and that “umpires have tighter, even more precise instructions on keeping the crowd under control”. Fourth seed Alexander Zverev, who effectively ended Rafael Nadal’s French Open career in the first round, defeated Goffin 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 6-2. Zverev arrived in Paris on the back of winning the Rome Open title and is the only player to reach the semi-finals at the last three French Open tournaments. On Friday, a Berlin court will hear an appeal by Zverev against a fine for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend. He received a 450,000-euro ($487,000) fine in October but appealed the ruling earlier this year, leading to a full trial. The 27-year-old is not required to attend the proceedings and insisted on the eve of the tournament that he “believes in the German system”. On Thursday, he refused to further discuss the case. “I have said everything before the tournament,” he said. After only nine singles matches were played after a Wednesday washout, 55 second round ties were scheduled on Thursday. Amongst early winners were world number two Sabalenka who fired 27 winners past Japanese qualifier Moyuka Uchijima to win 6-2, 6-2. ‘Blanket and tea’ The two-time Australian Open champion, a semi-finalist in Paris in 2023, has made at least the last four at her past six Grand Slams and is expected to be Iga Swiatek’s chief rival in the Pole’s quest for a fourth French Open title. Sabalenka will take on close friend Paula Badosa of Spain for a place in the last 16. “It’s not the best weather. I feel like going back to the hotel. Getting a blanket and hot tea, and Netflix,” said the Belarusian who had the benefit of playing under the roof of Court Philippe Chatrier. Fourth-seeded Rybakina, the only woman to defeat Swiatek on clay this year, was similarly untroubled. She eased past Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-4. Former world number one Daniil Medvedev moved into the last 32 after his opponent Miomir Kecmanovic retired with injury while trailing the fifth seed 6-1, 5-0. England’s Sophie Ecclestone appeals successfully for the lbw wicket of Pakistan’s Umm-e-Hani during the third Women’s ODI match against Pakistan at the County Cricket Ground, Chelmsford, Britain on May 29, 2024. | Photo Credit: Action Images via Reuters England spinner Sophie Ecclestone became the fastest woman to reach 100 wickets in One Day International (ODI) cricket after claiming three in their 178-run win over Pakistan on Wednesday. The 25-year-old, who was also named Player of the Series with a haul of six wickets across three ODIs, scythed through the Pakistan tail by taking the wickets of Aliya Riaz, Umm-e-Hani and Nashra Sandhu. She has reached the 100-wicket mark after bowling in 63 matches, beating the previous record held by Australian fast bowler Cathryn Fitzpatrick, who took 64 innings to get to that total. “The girls know I’m not good with numbers, I’m not good with stats. But it’s amazing and hopefully it can continue,” Ecclestone said. “I think the best thing for me is to enjoy it, and I play in the best team for enjoying it.”
