Former World Cup-winning Sri Lanka cricketer indicted for match-fixing in Lanka Premier League

Jun 05, 2025 05:07 PM IST The 40-year-old played one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka between 2012 and 2016 for a combined haul of 78 wickets Former Sri Lanka off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake has been indicted by the Hambantota High Court for attempting to lure a fellow player for match-fixing during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL) . Former Sri Lanka off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake was arrested and released on bail in 2023. The Attorney General’s Department said this becomes the first such indictment of a national level cricketer for match-fixing under the country’s recently-introduced anti-corruption law. He was arrested and released on bail in 2023. The 40-year-old played one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20 Internationals for Sri Lanka between 2012 and 2016 for a combined haul of 78 wickets. He was a member of Sri Lanka’s 2014 T20 World Cup-winning squad. According to local media reports, he made the corrupt approach to another national player Tharindu Ratnayake, who was playing for Colombo Kings at that time. “Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing,” a report in the Sri Lankan ‘Daily Mirror’ stated. Vaibhav Suryavanshi: I will look to do two times better for my team in next IPL

Rajasthan Royals batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi during the IPL T20 Match at the Sawai Man Singh Cricket Stadium in Jaipur. | Photo Credit: R.V. Moorthy Having left an indelible mark in his debut season itself, 14-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi says he will look to do two times better for his team Rajasthan Royals in next year’s Indian Premier League. Suryavanshi created the record for the fastest century for any Indian in terms of balls faced (35) when he cracked 101 off only 38 balls with seven fours and 11 sixes against Gujarat Titans in Jaipur in April. The whirlwind knock helped Suryavanshi not only enter his name in record books for the second fastest century ever in IPL, he also become the youngest T20 centurion in men’s T20 cricket at 14 years and 32 days. “Playing in the IPL is like a dream for everyone and I got a lot of positives from my first season and I also learnt a lot in terms of what I can do for the team in the next season,” Suryavanshi said in a video shared by IPL’s official website. Even as the Royals endured a forgettable campaign, the left-handed Suryavanshi tasted success on personal front as he was given the IPL Super Striker of the Season award after the conclusion of the final on Tuesday (June 3, 2025). “Next year, I will work on areas where I made mistakes and try to do much better for the team,” he said. Talking about his learnings from the maiden season, Suryavanshi said, “My learning is that I have to do two times better than what I have done so that my team also plays in the final next year and how much I can contribute to my team, I will focus on that.” Given his exploits, Suryavanshi was also named in the India Under-19 squad for a multi-format tour of England along with Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre, who made a successful debut for Chennai Super Kings. “It is a new tournament. I am going to the UK for the first time so it will be a new experience. I will experience how the game goes on there,” Suryavanshi said. “Ayush Mhatre, who played for Chennai Super Kings this time, is our captain. The preparations are going well and it will be a good experience of playing in England and will try to return with the trophy,” he added. Published – June 05, 2025 05:06 pm IST

'Why couldn't you wait 1-2 days? Why such a hurry?' Manoj Tiwary's tough questions to RCB after lives lost in Bengaluru

‘Why couldn’t you wait 1-2 days? Why such a hurry?’ Manoj Tiwary’s tough questions to RCB after lives lost in Bengaluru

On what should have been a joyous day for Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans, tragedy struck outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium, turning celebrations into chaos. A stampede at RCB’s home venue in Bengaluru claimed 11 lives and left over 30 people injured, abruptly halting the team’s maiden IPL victory festivities. The players had no clue of the tragedy that was unfolding outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium(AFP) Since RCB’s return to Bengaluru on Wednesday afternoon, enthusiastic crowds gathered across the city, eager to catch a glimpse of their beloved stars, especially Virat Kohli. However, the excitement turned tragic when a stampede broke out near the Chinnaswamy during the team’s visit to Vidhana Soudha to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Initially, the death toll remained unclear, but upon RCB’s arrival at the stadium, authorities confirmed the devastating number of casualties. In an interview with Hindustan Times, former India and KKR batter Manoj Tiwary expressed heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones. He also called for greater accountability and justice for the bereaved, emphasising the need for support and answers in the wake of the tragedy. Also Read: RCB show solidarity in fresh statement on stampede tragedy; announce financial aid for families of deceased “It is an unfortunate incident. It’s a very sad incident. There is no doubt that all the innocent people who had gone to celebrate had no idea that this would happen to them. It is very sad to think about it. It is very unfortunate that in this day and age, where facilities can be provided at the drop of a hat, such an incident happened and people end up losing their loves,” he said. “I felt very bad. There should be accountability. Whoever was responsible for organising it should have been a little proactive. And, I think there should have been an idea that lakhs of people would turn up to see RCB from close quarters. Because look, saying that we had no idea that so many people would come, it does not make sense. Before the IPL finals, we all knew that RCB have a tremendous fanbase all over the country. So, keeping that in mind, there should have been proactiveness, there should have been a system. So, there should have been precautions. There should have been due diligence,” he added. Also Read: ‘Can’t believe Virat Kohli knew people were dying outside and…’; RCB’s ‘over-the-top’ hype blamed for Bengaluru stampede The IPL 2025 champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, have faced sharp criticism for continuing celebrations inside M Chinnaswamy Stadium despite reports of a deadly stampede outside. In a statement released Wednesday night, the franchise clarified that they promptly curtailed the festivities upon learning of the tragedy and adhered to the protocols set by local authorities. Former India and KKR batter Tiwary acknowledged that RCB might deserve some leniency but questioned how the management and authorities could have been unaware of the stampede, given the rapid spread of news on social media. “If you can give a little benefit of the doubt, then you can. But, I don’t think that in today’s world, there is such a social media era, the message and the news must have gone. I don’t know, it is very difficult to sit here and speak. If they had found out about the stampede, despite that, if they still continued, then this would have been wrong. This should not have happened,” he said. “Nothing is more important than a person’s life. So, if this has happened, then it is very unfortunate. But, you can give a little benefit of the doubt. Now, what is the truth or not, it is very difficult for me to say. But, it could have been avoided. Because of the kind of crowd that came, the authorities should have prepared for such a big crowd. ‘RCB should have organised parade after 1-2 days’ Tiwary, no stranger to victory celebrations, drew from his experience with KKR’s 2012 IPL-winning squad. He recalled the well-orchestrated gala event and victory parade at Eden Gardens, hosted by Shah Rukh Khan and KKR’s management, which unfolded without any chaotic incidents. In contrast, RCB has faced backlash for hastily organising their celebratory event within 18-20 hours of their IPL 2025 triumph. Critics argue that the rushed planning contributed to the tragic stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium, unlike KKR’s carefully planned felicitation ceremony held two days after their victory. “I think it would have been better if they had done it after 1-2 days. Administrations know what can and cannot be done. Good administrators, like Mamta Banerjee ji, have a lot of experience, so they know what can and cannot be done. So, she followed due diligence, organised everything and did it accordingly. Somewhere, that is why I am saying, accountability should be there,” said Tiwary. “Whether it is the administration, whether it is the government, whether it is the management of RCB, or whoever it is, accountability should be there. See, today, after celebrating, every player went to their homes, but those who have died, and the condition of their family, only they can know. Small children, such pictures and videos have come in front, what is the benefit? They do not understand. Why the event was organised in such a hurry, why couldn’t they have waited for a day or two,” he concluded.

RCB chased mismanaged KKR star hard; blames Kolkata for his disastrous IPL return: ‘If he came and played for us…’

Jun 05, 2025 04:44 PM IST RCB coach Andy Flower felt Venkatesh Iyer would’ve shone under their care, subtly blaming KKR after his poor return of 142 runs. There was certainly an increase in expectation from India all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer, when his auction value soared to INR 23.75 crore on the opening day of the mega event in Riyadh last November, an increment of 1087.5 per cent from his base price of INR 2 crore. It further peaked with Kolkata Knight Riders announcing him the vice-captain. Alas, it met the same brutal fate. Succumbed under the pressure, he managed just 142 runs in 11 innings, resulting in a disastrous season. However, Andy Flower, under whom the Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifted their maiden IPL title this year, claimed Iyer would have performed better had he been in RCB. RCB won the IPL title beating Punjab Kings in the final(PTI) The last bid price for Iyer, before KKR roped him in, was INR 23.50 crore, which came from RCB. It was among the biggest the franchise ever bid for a player at an auction, thus showing their desperation to acquire the India batter. Although the capital was later used to acquire two match winners who played an instrumental role in their title triumph, Flower, speaking to the media, recalled RCB’s plans for Iyer as he subtly blamed Kolkata for mishandling him. “We really rated Venky; that’s why we went hard for him. We valued having a strong Indian core for our team. If he came and played for us, he would have had a really great season,” he said. How missing out Venkatesh Iyer was a blessing in disguise for RCB? Bengaluru had used the exactly same amount to rope in Josh Hazlewood for INR 12.50 crore and Phil Salt for INR 11.50 crore, before strengthen their unit with two other first XI certainties – Jitesh Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. And all four of them helped RCB claim their maiden IPL title in 18 years. Speaking to the broadcasters, veteran India batter Abhinav Mukund believed it was a lucky escape for the RCB. “In hindsight, they must be thinking, thank God we didn’t go all the way from Venkatesh Iyer. Because their last losing bid was Venkatesh Iyer. And the next three buys were Josh Hazlewood, Jitesh Sharma and I think Phil Salt. Those were the next three buys. And they saved so much in the bank for day two when Bhuvneshwar Kumar came in. So, it was a very clear plan that they wanted to buy all of these players,” he said. RCB show solidarity in fresh statement on stampede tragedy; announce financial aid for families of deceased

Jun 05, 2025 04:48 PM IST RCB expressed grief after the tragic stampede during their victory parade and announced financial aid for families of 11 dead and 33 injured. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, on Thursday, expressed solidarity following the tragic stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during the team’s IPL victory celebrations, offering financial aid to the families of the 11 deceased. Fans throng near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on June 4, 2025, to celebrate a day after the victory of RCB in the IPL final cricket match(AFP) In a fresh statement released a day after the incident, RCB said players, staff, and management were left deeply anguished. Alongside the financial aid, they have created an ‘RCB Cares’ fund to support the 33 others injured in the stampede. “The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family. As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of INR 10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased. In addition, a fund called RCB Cares is also being created to support fans injured in this tragic incident,” the official statement read.  “Our fans will always remain at the heart of everything that we do. We remain united in grief.” The incident was triggered by a heavy rush of people to join a hastily-arranged celebration for the franchise. The police and local administration were left overwhelmed by the lakhs who took to the streets to join the festivities at a stadium which can accommodate only 35,000 people. At the order of the Karnataka’s chief minister Siddaramaiah, inquiry into the incident has already begun with Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha heading the magisterial probe. Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Police Commissioner B Dayananda will be asked to join the inquiry. “Today I visited the KSCA (Karnataka State Cricket Association) stadium. I have seen all the events here. I will issue notice to some people for inquiry. I will conduct an inquiry and finish within 15 days. I will issue notice to KSCA, RCB management, event manager and Police Commissioner. I will ask people to give their evidence,” he told reporters. IND vs ENG Test series: England announces 14-man squad for first Test, Chris Woakes returns

File picture of England bowler Chris Woakes celebrating a wicket during a Test match against New Zealand. The 36-year-old has been called up for the India series | Photo Credit: AP Fast bowler Chris Woakes was on Thursday (June 5, 2025) named in a 14-man England squad to take on India in the first of the five Tests to be played from June 20 at Leeds. The 36-year-old Woakes recently returned from a long-term ankle injury. He has 181 wickets and 1,970 runs from 57 Tests so far, and had played a major role in a big England win over India at the Lord’s during the 2018 series. He scored an unbeaten 137 and took four wickets in the match to help England win by an innings and 159 runs. Woakes, along with fast bowler Josh Tongue, have been asked by the ECB to get some miles under their legs before the first Test against India starting June 20. Hence, the duo will turn up for England Lions against India A in the second unofficial Test starting on Friday at Northampton. Overton returns Jamie Overton returned to the Test fold for the first time since his maiden appearance against New Zealand in June 2022, even though he sustained a fracture to his right little finger on May 29 during the first ODI against West Indies at Birmingham. The 31-year-old Overton, who also played in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League for Chennai Super Kings, “continues to be assessed and reviewed daily by the England medical team”, the ECB said on their website. The England squad led by Ben Stokes features a lone spinner in Shoaib Bashir, who took nine wickets in their win against Zimbabwe in the only Test played earlier this summer. Young batter Jacob Bethell, who played for eventual IPL winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and seamer Sam Cook, who made his debut against Zimbabwe, were also named in the squad. The ECB said, “Durham seamer Brydon Carse and the Warwickshire pair Jacob Bethell and Chris Woakes are included in the squad, having last featured during the Test tour of New Zealand in December.” “Surrey’s Gus Atkinson was unavailable for selection due to a right hamstring injury sustained during the recent Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge,” it added. Schedule India will begin their tour of England with the first Test to be played from June 20-24 at Headingley, while the second Test will be at Edgbaston from July 2-6. The third Test will be at Lord’s from July 10-14, fourth from July 23-26 at Old Trafford and the fifth and final will be played at The Oval from July 31 to August 4. Indian squad An under-transition India will be captained by Shubman Gill since they are without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who announced their Test retirements in May, while spinner Ravichandran Ashwin called time of his career last year during tour of Australia. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami was not selected for this tour due to lack of preparation. Manchester City’s 3rd place finish in 2024/25 better than title win: Pep Guardiola

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has dismissed the notion that the 2024-25 season was a disaster for his side and claimed the third-place finish he got is better than his previous title win. City fell off the pace this season in the title race and almost missed out on Champions League football before getting their act together and making it to the competition. This was Guardiola’s second trophyless season of his career, but said it wasn’t a disaster for his side. Speaking to Reuters, the City boss said that he wants to suffer when he isn’t winning and feels that everyone is in the world to feel different experiences. “I want to suffer when I’m not winning games,” Guardiola told Reuters in an exclusive interview. “I want to feel bad. I want to sleep badly. I want that when the situation goes bad, it affects me… I want that!” “I’m angry… my food, it tastes worse… I don’t need to eat much because I need to feel that (anger). Because if it doesn’t, what sense would it have? Winning or losing… We’re here in this world to feel different experiences, different moods.” Guardiola went on to say that the 2024-25 season was the most valuable one for him as he was able to learn a lot. “You judge happiness if you win. You judge success if you win and win. And that is a problem,” he said. “I will not judge myself or my team because of bad seasons or good seasons… Maybe finishing third in a season and never giving up otherwise you finish 10th or 12th, maybe that’s a better season than when we won the fourth Premier League in a row. “We faced so many difficulties that were higher due to injuries, relaxation, I was not good enough… for many reasons. Maybe the analysis about my period is that the last season was better. Qualifying for the Champions League when we were on the verge of not getting it.” ‘Winners are boring’ Reflecting on his setbacks, Guardiola quoted former Uruguayan President Jose Mujica and said that success is all about how many times you stand up after falling down. “Success is how many times you stand up when you fall down.” He added: “Fall down, stand up. Fall down, stand up… That is the biggest success.” “Winners are boring,” he said, adding that he always looked forward to post-match interviews with players and coaches from losing sides. “It’s nice to see the losers. That is when you really learn.” City and Guardiola will be aiming to mount a stronger challenge next season. Published On: Jun 5, 2025 Tune In
