T20 World Cup: Max O’Dowd half-century steers Netherlands to six-wicket win against Nepal | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Max O’Dowd’s unbeaten 54 off 48 balls guided the Netherlands to a six-wicket win against Nepal in their T20 World Cup Group D match on Tuesday at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The Dutch chased down the target of 107 runs in 18.4 overs, with Bas de Leede hitting the winning boundary. Vikram Singh contributed 22 runs, while Sybrand Engelbrecht scored 14.Nepal’s chances were hurt by three dropped catches, including a missed opportunity by captain Rohit Paudel to dismiss O’Dowd in the 18th over. The Netherlands’ bowling attack had earlier restricted Nepal to 106 all out, with Logan van Beek and Tim Pringle each taking three wickets. Paul van Meekeren and de Leede claimed two wickets apiece.“Our bowlers were awesome up top,” Netherlands captain Scott Edwards said afterwards.“All five of our bowlers were brilliant. Ideally we would have got the runs a little quicker, but it was great the way Max batted, and Bassie finished it off well.“We’ve got to play consistent cricket right way through this tournament.” After losing the toss and being put in to bat, Nepal struggled in the damp, overcast conditions, finding themselves at 15-2 after 3.1 overs. Anil Sah was caught by van Beek off Pringle for 11 runs, with Nepal reaching 40-3. “The conditions while batting were really challenging,” Nepal captain Paudel said. “Netherlands bowled really well.”Rohit Paudel provided some resistance with a quick 35 off 37 balls, but his partners in the middle order fell rapidly. Kushal Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, and Sompal Kami were dismissed in quick succession, leaving Nepal at 66-6 after 13.2 overs. Once Paudel was dismissed by Pringle, the last three wickets fell swiftly.

While defending 183, Farooqi’s ferocious pace in the first over sealed Ronak Patel and Roger Mukasa’s trip back to the pavilion on two consecutive deliveries. He castled Patel (4) with an inswinger on the second delivery. On the next ball, he left Mukasa bamboozled with an inswinger and trapped him in front of the stumps on his first delivery. Wickets continued to fall like a house of cards with Mujeeb Ur Rahman joining the action in the next over. Mujeeb pretended to bowl a leg break but deceived Simon Ssesazi (4) by pulling off a googly. Naveen-ul-Haq scalped two in the fifth over to reduce Uganda to 18/5. In the rest of the chase, Uganda’s batters struggled to pull off boundaries while Farooqi continued to be economical and rattle wickets. In the 13th over, Farooqi struck was on a hat-trick for the second time after picking up two consecutive wickets. With the second consecutive scalp, he completed his maiden five-wicket haul for Afghanistan in international cricket. Uganda eventually bundled out on a score of 58 in the 16th over and succumbed to a 125-run defeat. Earlier in the innings, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran’s fierce opening partnership propelled Afghanistan to 183/5 against Uganda. The duo also registered 154-run against Uganda to record the second-highest opening stand in the men’s T20 World Cup. Gurbaz scored the highest with 76 off 45 while opener Zadran smashed 70 runs in 46 balls powering Afghanistan to a fighting total. Put to bat first, Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran took off in no time, taking advantage of decent batting conditions. Afghanistan were going at 11 runs an over at the end of the first powerplay. French Open 2024: Novak Djokovic opens up on acing back-to-back 5-setters after Round 4 win

Novak Djokovic opened up after winning yet another 5-setter in the French Open 2024. On Monday, June 3, the veteran defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at Philippe-Chatrier. The 37-year-old had to go through lots of ups and downs in the match before having the last laugh after 4 hours and 29 minutes. Prior to that, Djokovic took over 4 hours to get the better of Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. In both his matches against Musetti and Cerundolo, the defending champion seemed in discomfort before upping his game to come up trumps. Djokovic admitted that he could easily have lost both times, but also credited the crowd for cheering him up. “I had the same question from Alex Corretja after the last match. I have to say thank you to the fans, like in the previous match. Against Musetti, it was 2-2 in the fourth set and my energy level changed completely. You gave me a lot of energy. Today the same thing happened. You gave me a lot of support. Not much more I can say,” Djokovic said in the on-court interview. ‘Cerundolo deserves to be applauded’ Djokovic also lauded Cerundolo for putting in the hard yards and putting him under immense pressure following the opening set. “Perhaps I was 3 or 4 points from losing this match today. I have to congratulate Francisco because he played with excellent quality. He deserves to be applauded. The only explanation I have is thanks to you. So thank you again for all your support,” Djokovic added. Djokovic, in the meantime, went past Roger Federer to record the most wins (370) in Grand Slams. He also broke Federer’s record of most Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances (59). Djokovic will next be up against the winner of the match between Casper Ruud and Taylor Fritz. T20 World Cup 2024: David Wiese’s Super Over heroics help Namibia start campaign with victory over Oman

Oman’s fightback in the death overs went in vain as David Wiese’s heroic efforts both with bat and ball in the Super Over helped Namibia start their T20 World Cup campaign with a win in low-scoring enthralling match here at the Kensington Oval on Sunday . David Wiese stars for Namibia yet again Wiese emerged as the hero for Namibia with both bat and ball as he slammed 13 in the Super Over and came back to bowl, got a wicket, defending 21 runs. Despite reducing Oman to 109 in 20 overs, Namibia did not have it easy as the game finished in a tie, marking the first Super Over in a men’s T20 World Cup tournament since 2012. Defending 110, Bilal Khan gave Oman the perfect start, bowling opener Michael van Lingen for a duck off the very second ball of the innings. While Nikolaas Davin and Jan Frylinck attempted to play their shots, they were hampered by the inconsistent bounce during the early stages of the pursuit. Namibia was 32/1 at the end of the first powerplay. The skipper, Aqib Ilyas, then used spinners and medium pacers to slow the ball down. Despite a lot of smashes and misses, the duo held on to their wickets, and Namibia finished the powerplay at 32/1. As the runs dried up, Davin attempted to replicate Aqib’s spin. Davin hit Aqib for a six after seven consecutive dot balls. The wily spinner, on the other hand, exacted his revenge by having Davin caught by Mohammad Nadeem on the very next delivery. The disciplined spin from Aqib and Zeeshan Maqsood slowed Namibia’s scoring rate in the middle overs. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus, for his part, attempted to keep the scoring rate tight. In the game of nerves, Oman dropped critical catches, but Maqsood eventually held off Ayaan Khan to remove Erasmus for 13 in the 15th over. The set Frylinck took initiative at this stage and hit a flurry of boundaries to bring the asking rate at par with three overs remaining. Mehran Khan’s excellent 18th over yielded just four byes and claimed JJ Smit’s wicket. David Wiese’s six in the nineteenth over helped bring the equation to five off the last over. Mehran, who had only given four runs in two overs, increased his wicket total from one to three in the first three balls of the last over by bowling Frylinck and trapping Zane Green lbw. The equation eventually came down to two versus one, with the aggressive Wiese up against the cunning Mehran. Wiese failed to connect, but the wicketkeeper botched the ball, giving the batsmen a bye. The game ended in a Super Over. After labouring to chase down 5 runs in the penultimate over of a never-ending chase, Namibia came out firing in the Super Over. Seasoned all-rounder Wiese demonstrated his power-hitting ability by hitting a six and four against Bilal Khan, before skipper Gerhard Erasmus smashed two boundaries. Namibia scored 21 runs, the highest total in a Super Over in a men’s T20 World Cup competition. Wiese excelled with the ball after being tasked with bowling the Super Over for Namibia. He took a wicket and gave only 10 runs as Namibia won the Super Over by 11 runs, kicking off their World Cup campaign with a victory. Earlier, Trumpelmann’s pace attack jolted Oman, taking three wickets inside the powerplay and the pacer went on to pick his fourth wicket of the night, returning with a figure of 4-21. Captian Erasmus with his crafty bowling picked two wickets while the seasoned pacer David Wiese bagged three scalps, conceding 28 runs in 3.4 overs. Opted to bowl first, Ruben Trumpelmann drew the first blood as he got into the act with the first ball, trapping Oman opener Kashyap Prajapati for LBW with a superb yorker on his very first delivery. The very next ball, Trumpelmann delivered another magnificent yorker that caught Oman skipper Aqib Ilyas off guard, and the batter went lbw for a duck. The left-arm pacer had a third in his second over when Naseem Khushi attempted to drive him down the track but only found Erasmus at mid-off. Experienced player Zeeshan Maqsod held the innings together during the first powerplay, keeping Oman’s innings steady and increasing the scoring rate to run a ball. However, Bernard Scholtz had him leg before wicket in the seventh over, putting Oman farther behind. The spinner’s disciplined bowling ensured that Oman’s lower order did not take advantage of the change in speed. Scholtz and Erasmus continued to provide breakthroughs for the Eagles, even as Oman batters battled to move the ball past the inner circle. Oman failed to knock a single boundary in 44 deliveries between the 10th and 17th overs. Khalid Kail then led Oman’s change as the batter slammed big shots before falling prey to David Wiese after scoring 34 runs in 39 balls. When Namibia pacers arrived in the death overs, the Asian side attempted to pick up the scoring rate, but David Wiese and Trumpelmann nibbled away at the tail, bowling Oman out before they could complete their quota of overs. Brief score: Oman 109 ; Ruben Trumpelmann 4-21) vs Namibia 109/6 .

West Indies Pushed To Limit By Plucky PNG In Their T20 World Cup Opener

West Indies Pushed To Limit By Plucky PNG In Their T20 World Cup Opener

Two-time champions West Indies were put under extreme pressure by a plucky Papua New Guinea unit before scraping through with a five-wicket win in their 2024 T20 World Cup opener here on Sunday. Left-hander Sese Bau (50 off 43) made a fine half-century to take PNG to 136 for eight after the associate nation lost their first four wickets for 50 runs. A power-packed West Indies should have chased down the below-par total comfortably but PNG made them work hard for the win despite their limitations. PNG’s spinners as well medium pacers did not allow the hard-hitting West Indies batters to cut loose on a slow surface. The tournament co-hosts eventually got home in 19 overs thanks to rearguard action from Roston Chase (42 not out off 27 balls) and Andre Russell (15 off 9). The West Indies’ innings was halted for 20 minutes due to rain but there was no loss of overs. The passing shower arrived with the home team at 8 for one in the second over and it would have been two down at the same score had right-arm pacer Alei Nao won a lbw review for the dangerous Nicholas Pooran. After trapping Johnson Charles off his very first ball, Nao got another one to seam back in from short of length to leave Pooran stranded but luck was on the latter’s side. However, his scratchy effort ended when he was caught in the deep off left-arm spinner John Kariko. PNG skipper Assad Vala made it 63 for three inside 10 overs when he deceived opener Brandon King (34) in flight and had him caught at deep midwicket. Nerves increased in the West Indies dressing room when it became 97 for five in 16 overs before Chase and Russell got hold of the proceedings. After PNG were sent in to bat, Bau made instant impact on the big stage with his spirited effort. PNG, playing their second T20 World Cup, were reeling at 50 for four before Bau shared a 44-run stand with Charles Amini (12) to save them the blushes. Expecting the pitch to turn, the West Indies picked three spinners and put the opposition in after winning the toss. The help for the spinners was visible as early as the first over bowled by Akeal Hosein. However, it was pacer Romario Shepherd who picked the first wicket by having Tony Ura caught behind in the second over of the game. The ball seamed away, inducing a thick edge from the batter. Hosein got rid of number three Lega Siaka with an arm ball before Alzarri Joseph sent back Vala (21 off 22 balls). Vala came up with a couple of crisp hits in the cover region before being caught brilliantly by Roston Chase at backward point. Vala’s six over extra cover off spinner Chase in the previous over was one of the highlights of PNG’s innings. Bau then ensured that the odd boundary kept coming as PNG tried to consolidate their innings. Bau, a leftie like Vala, smashed left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie for a six and couple of fours to give the innings much needed momentum. After his departure, the associate nation did rather well to get close to the 140-run mark.  Topics mentioned in this article

'If You Put Shubman Gill And Rinku Singh Out...': Ex-India Selector's Blunt Take On T20 World Cup Squad

‘If You Put Shubman Gill And Rinku Singh Out…’: Ex-India Selector’s Blunt Take On T20 World Cup Squad

Former BCCI chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar feels India have one of the strong teams heading into the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. India take on Bangladesh in their only practice match of tournament on Saturday against Bangladesh, days before kicking off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5. The Indian team, led by captain Rohit Sharma, arrived in New York earlier this week to begin their preparations for the tournament. Speaking at a recent event, Vengsarkar suggested that India have one of strongest squads in the tournament, despite the fact that they left out key players like KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh from the 15 man squad. “The current Indian team, I think, is one of the best in the world, I would say. If you could, you know, put a Gill out or Rahul or Rinku Singh out, I’m sure it’s a very strong team. And I wish them all the success. Because, I think, it’s one of the best in the world at the moment”, Vengsarkar said at an event at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Gill and Rinku have joined the team as travelling reserves while Rahul was missing from both the lists. Vengsarkar also pointed out that due to the uncertain nature of the format, any player can be a match-winner on a particular day. “The key players would like to play an important role in this T20 World Cup. It’s very difficult to say in this format because everybody is a very important member of the team. But the thing is that, as you have seen in IPL, the first six were very important. How you give a good start in the first six was very important. And of course, in this format, anything can happen. But I can’t say X, Y or Z is a key player in the team. In this format, anybody can win the match at any time of the match,” he added. India are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and T20 World Cup co-hosts USA. Virat Kohli was absent from the team training this week as he is due to reach New York few hours before India’s warm-up match. Topics mentioned in this article
